Beginning Paddler in Texarkana 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for a guide to the many rivers and creeks to take multi-day excursions with my family in Arkansas and the close by rivers to Texarkana where I now live. I am a beginner paddler and need to have details but as any person who is overwhelmed by information, a concise and clear presentation is very helpful. On both counts, this book delivers. Having GPS coordinates is particularly helpful and the maps are very clear. The book is divided by regions, and this is also helpful. I can recommend this book without question.

A brand new classic! 5 out of 5 stars.

Kennon's Ozark Whitewater was by far the best whitewater guidebook for the Ozarks (and the only one to find information on many streams), and it neve left my shuttle vehicle. It is in tatters now, so the timing of his updated guidebook is perfect timing for me. Though I will always refer to this and any of his books as "Ozark Whitewater" the new name reflects the fact that this is a big upgrade from version two. Much more up to date info, extremely good maps (much improved from the last version), and many new streams (some I've never heard of!). If you're a paddler in Arkansas, Oklahoma, or Missouri, Kennon has again produced the must have book for your paddling library. My copy is already on its way to being destroyed in the back of my shuttle rig! Highly recomended!

    Editorial Review:

Though it sports a new name and look, A Canoeing & Kayaking Guide to Ozarks,3rd (formerly Ozark Whitewater) is still the definitive guide to whitewater in the Ozarks. Fifteen years after it was first published, this book continues to bring paddlers the best of Ozark streams: from classics rivers, such as the Buffalo National and Little Missouri to steep creeks like Bryant and Turkey.

A HANDY AND INFORMATIVE TOOL FOR THE HIKER. 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a very handy little book to own if you are into the hiking thing at any level. I say this, but always remember that not any one book can meet all needs. I certainly would not use this book, and this book alone to plan my entire book. I have hiked many of the trails; both in Missouri and Arkansas over the years, and can say for certain that the information in this volume is pretty accurate. That being said.....

As the title would indicate, this is a book dealing with 50 hiking trails located in the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks. It should be noted that a few of these trails are outside the area that traditionally are known as the Ozarks, some of those located in Eastern Missouri being the most notable. Each of the trails is given an entire chapter and one black and white photo to represent some aspect of the trail. The author has included total distances, hiking time, vertical rise, rating (easy, mild, difficult, etc.), and maps with GPS coordinates. The author has done a pretty good job of describing the trail, identifying and specific difficulties and letting the hiker know the nature of the facilities at each location. It should be noted here that the author's distances will differ somewhat from government and local literature. I would highly recommend that you go by the author's figures rather than the government figures as they are much more accurate. I would also recommend that you pick up local literature at the site of the trail before you begin the hike, ignoring the distances, but paying close attention to other trail tips and camp locations, if applicable.

Some of the location directions of some of these trails are a bit general and I do recommend you purchase a map of the local area, or at least a good, detailed state map. The author's directions are very accurate, but due to the nature of Arkansas and Missouri roads, it is good to have all the information available possible.

All in all, this is a useful book to have around if you are contemplating hiking the area. Most of these hikes are an absolute delight. Do keep in mind that some are quite difficult and you should take heed to the author's comments concerning these difficulties. Other trails are quite easy...all, easy or difficult are worth the effort. I am giving this one four stars as I feel some of the directions as to actually getting to the location of the trail are a bit confusing. Also, I have some mild issues with the author's opinion as to what constitutes the difference between "difficult, easy, moderate, etc." This is a pretty subjective area. Other than that, this is a fine book.

    Editorial Review:

What the travel guides don't say 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Travel guides mention the large cities and restaurants, but this book mentions the interesting side trips with their true taste of Arkansas restaurants and lesser known sights to see. It made our trip very enjoyable.

    Editorial Review:

Antique cars at the Museum of Automobiles, shiitake-mushroom harvesting in Shirley, and a traditional "cowboy breakfast" in the cooking pit at the Lost Spur Guest Ranch help make Arkansas a unique place to live in or visit.

People have always built their settlements near sources of water, but few rivers have as many towns upon it as America's Great River Road. Now in a newly revised and updated edition, "Discover! America's Great River Road: Your Guide to Heritage, Natural History & Recreation" is a guide to the northern portion of the Mississippi River, this particular volume covering everything from St. Paul in Minnesota to Dubuque in Iowa. Covering a massive slew of towns, communities, and cities that run along this river, with their natural and cultural highlights for each of them. "Discover! America's Great River Road" is a series to watch for a different way to explore Americana.

    Editorial Review:

Nationally recognized Mississippi River writer Pat Middleton provides a fascinating overview of the Upper Mississippi. Now in its eighth edition, Volume I highlights wildlife hotspots, campgrounds, community information, special events and more! Maps, photos and historical data supplement this great guide.

Excellent from the Historical and General Perspectives 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Admittedly, it is difficult to be comprehensive and remain a "handbook," meaning something that you could take with you and refer to while on the trail or the river. If you are looking for specific maps for trails, I would recommend books by Tim Ernst, or if you are looking for details on running the river, A Canoeing & Kayaking Guide to the Ozarks are both superior for their individual information. This said, if you want something to refer to in general with historical as well as geological information along with talk of the flora and fauna with generalized information on trails and the river this book is outstanding. Excellent color and black and white pictures, and a searchable index.

    Editorial Review:

The Buffalo River Handbook is the complete guide to the Buffalo River ... Compact and highly readable. With 172 photographs, drawings, maps and diagrams. With helpful information from geologists, biologists, archaeologists and historians; from experts with the National Park Service and US Forest Service; and from nearly 100 long-time Buffalo River residents. With important findings from a variety of related writings. And with true stories from the author's many years of Buffalo River investigations and adventures.

    Editorial Review:

Wilson’s Creek, Pea Ridge, and Prairie Grove were three of the most important battles fought west of the Mississippi River during the Civil War. They influenced the course of the first half of the war in that region by shaping Union military efforts while significantly contributing to Confederate defeat. Wilson’s Creek, Pea Ridge, and Prairie Grove, the first book to provide a detailed guide to these battlefields, takes the visitor step-by-step through the major sites of each engagement. With numerous maps and illustrations that enhance the authors’ descriptions of what happened at each stop, the book also includes analytical accounts explaining tactical problems associated with each battle as well as vignettes evoking for readers the personal experience of those who fought there. An indispensable companion for the battlefield visitor, this guide offers not only touring information and driving tours of sites associated with the campaigns that led to the battles, but also a brief history of each battle and an overview of the larger strategy and tactics of the military action in which these battles figured.

    Editorial Review:

"Every cemetery is worth visiting, and the people in them are worth trying to remember. They were much like us". Thus the writers of The Dallas Morning News set out to explore the cemeteries of Texas and the surrounding states for the newspaper's Travel section. The more than forty-five stories serve as history lessons and travelogues for more than sixty cemeteries, chronicling the resting places of famous people and the tragedies borne by ordinary people. This compilation reaffirms our fascination with cemeteries and their status as tourist attractions. People visit cemeteries in large numbers. Evidence of crowd control abounds, from signs directing traffic to the grave marker of President Clinton's mother in Hope, Arkansas, to the large steel cage protecting the tombstone of Billy the Kid at Fort Sumner, New Mexico. A monument in New Orleans was made famous by the movie Easy Rider, and Bonnie Parker's coveted headstone in Dallas was relocated to prevent theft. The stories also demonstrate that the reasons people flock to cemeteries are as varied as the people interred there. Cemeteries hold some of the most interesting sculpture and folk art in our region. Unusual graves include the Sturrock Cemetery in Tyler County, Texas, started when the family arrived from Scotland in the 1830s. The dozen sandstone crypts are said to resemble the style of the family's houses in Scotland. The graves at the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation in Polk County. Texas, are adorned with decorations such as sea shells, stones, skillets, and teddy bears. New Orleans cemeteries are a tourist industry by themselves, featured in movies and Anne Rice novels. The oldest standing cemetery is St. Louis No.1, on the edge of the French Quarter. The most famous grave here belongs to Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen. Louisiana's French and Cajun cultures come alive in its cemeteries, and many plantations, such as Afton Villa and Rosedown, contain cemeteries. Cemeteries hold fascination for history buffs and family genealogists, and this book is a valuable guide for both. It provides information about the more well-known gravesites, such as Sam Houston's at Huntsville's Oakwood Cemetery, but also provides information about the less well-known locations. Two graves in unassuming cemeteries are the final resting places of two of the greatest blues artists of all time: "Blind" Lemon Jefferson in Wortham, Texas, and Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter in Mooringsport, Louisiana. Do you know where Hoss Cartwright is buried? The authors of this handy guidebook do. This book will also illuminate the history behind the sites and the people who lie buried there, as well as provide information on nearby places to stay. It's the ideal book for the amateur genealogist and weekend historian.
