This is a wonderful product for those going through recovery of so many things. It doesn't have to be drugs or alcohol. It can be anger, abuse, co-dependency, and many others. This is the first book in a series of books designed to help you through the whole process.

Editorial Review:

Drawn from the Beatitudes, Celebrate Recovery helps people resolve painful problems in the context of the church as a whole. Rather than setting up an isolated recovery community, it helps participants and their churches come together and discover new levels of care, acceptance, trust, and grace.

Great study if you commit to it 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The idea of the study was great and I was interested in what Jim Cymbala could offer on the subject because I know that his church is focussed on prayer and God has blessed the church body because of that.

The study itself I found to be weak. To be fair, I've lead many Bible studies for many years and this was one of the best I've lead but it had more to do with the particular group of women who were willing to be vulnerable and be committed to the discipline of prayer than the study itself.

I added in a lot of experiential ideas that created and fostered the discipline and although it is a 6-week study, the last week is virtually a write-off because it is directed to leaders in the church.

The book offers suggested segment times, which looked great on paper was was impossible to implement (have you ever been in a room with 8-10 women and given them only 20 minutes to answer 5 questions of discussion?). It's ironic that we ran out of time (and I cut out a lot) at the end to really focus on actually praying.

Editorial Review:

This participant's guide accompanies a six-session small group DVD curriculum, in which award-winning author Jim Cymbala shows what the Holy Spirit can do when believers get serious about prayer and the Gospel. Cymbala tells how God moves in life-changing ways when we set aside our own agendas, take him at his Word, and listen for his voice. The DVD curriculum and leader's guide is available separately.

Great Book on Worship 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

While it is an effort to worth through the first few chapters, the gold mine of discussion on the real meaning and purpose of worship is well worth the effort. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to live a life in worship of the Almighty God.

Editorial Review:

Too often Christians have only thought of worship in terms of particular musical styles or liturgical formats. But a proper view of worship is far larger than what takes place in churches on Sunday mornings. All of us, Christian or not, are always worshiping, whether or not that worship is directed toward God. We are unceasing worshipers.

In this fruition of a lifetime of study, reflection and experience, Harold Best casts a holistic vision for worship as continuous outpouring in all settings and contexts. With careful exposition and eloquent analysis, Best addresses popular misunderstandings about the use of music and offers correctives toward a more biblically consistent practice of artistic action.

Incisive, provocative, profound and comprehensive, Best's landmark volume is one by which all other statements on worship and the arts will be measured.

Editorial Review:

At the heart of the family-both human and Catholic-faith is nurtured and practiced, pastors with communities, parents with children, and catechists with students. This catechesis happens in many places, is led by many different people, and requires a multiplicity of materials. The newNational Directory for Catechesis (NDC) is the resource that provides the inspiration for all catechesis in the United States and the reference point for formation of catechists and preparation of catechetical materials. A companion to the General Directory for Catechesis, the NDC builds on its themes and contextualizes catechesis within the life of the Church in the United States, paying close attention to ongoing social and cultural challenges. At its core is a desire to renew catechesis in dioceses, parishes, and schools, to fire a new energy and commitment to proclaim the Gospel. Comprehensive in scope, the NDC provides the fundamental theological and pastoral principles and offers guidelines for applying those principles within the catechetical mission of the Church in the United States. The NDC is divided into ten chapters that delve into the catechesis and diversity, evangelization, the faith of the Church, methodology, worship and sacraments, moral formation, the settings for catechesis, those who catechize, catechetical ministry, and resources. Throughout the NDC, it is reinforced that Jesus is the heart of catechesis regardless of where catechesis takes place. The NDC is a "must-have" for anyone in catechesis or Catholic education-teachers, principals, directors and coordinators of religious education and youth ministry, catechists, and students in the field.

Editorial Review:

Mary Beth Bonacci speaks to nearly 100,000 people every year. She speaks to people across the country and around the world - about friendship, about relationships, about marriage, about God's plan for sexuality, and about finding real, honest love.

And they speak back to her. They ask her questions -- about sex, about dating, about healing after a shattered relationship, about marriage, about their struggles to live love. Now, for the first time, Mary Beth has published those questions - and her answers - in a comprehensive, readable guide which addresses the details of the very real struggle that people face in trying to live real love in a world gone mad.

Through these questions and her answers, Mary Beth offers a comprehensive catechesis of the Church's teaching in the areas of marriage and human sexuality. She tackles the toughest issues - premarital sex, contraception, divorce, homosexuality, pornography and others. She gives practical advice on living the Church's teachings. And throughout it all, she demonstrates that living respect for God's gift of sexuality is the way - the only way - to find real, honest. love.

Editorial Review:

What is an intellectual? How can we learn to think well? What does it mean to love God with our minds? Can Christians legitimately aspire to becoming intellectuals? And can intellectual life indeed be a Christian calling for some - if not for all?

James Sire puts his supple mind to these questions and offers an unusual insider's view of learning to think well for the glory of God and for the sake of his kingdom. In particular he shows us how to cultivate "habits of the mind" that will strengthen us in the pursuit of our goal. Because Jesus was the smartest man who ever lived, he argues, we can and should accept the challenge to think as well as we can.

"Few contemporary evangelical writers have so profitably explored the meaning and implications of the Christian worldview and mind as Jim Sire. Now his wise, well-informed and witty work Habits of the Mind puts us even further in his debt." Douglas Groothuis, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Denver Seminary, and author of Truth Decay (IVP)

"This may be Dr. Sire's best book yet! He has introduced us to many fellow travelers on the road to wisdom who are great discoveries in themselves. He helpfully points us to all the important links--mind and heart, passion for holiness and passion for truth--links that should be indissoluble, but alas are not." Terry Morrison, Director Faculty Ministries, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship

"Over the last twenty-five years, no one has written so widely and helpfully about the challenge facing Christian students as James Sire. Page upon page, year after year, he has set before a generation the meaning of the Christian faith--intellectually rich and profoundly true. Now in Habits of the Mind one hears countless conversations and a lifetime of listening in this call to love what we believe, to live the truth even as we learn to probe and ponder it." Steven Garber, Scholar-in-Residence, Council for Christian Colleges and Universities

Building the proper library 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Are you conservative? Are you religious in the Christian Catholic way? Then this book is for you. I mean this in a wonderful way. Even if you didn't answer yes to both questions you will find this book valuable. The title says it all so no more description is necessary.

One great thing it did for me was to clarify my thinking and point me in the right direction of what I should be learning about, what is really important to spend my time learning about. Ever walk into Barnes & Nobel and feel confused and overwhelmed by this question, "Good heavens, what book and I gonna buy now because their are so darn many ones to pick from?" This book will answer that question for you.

I savored every word on every page as I read through this book. Then I went to my Amazon.com account and added virtually every bood he suggested to my 'wish list', yes all 200+ of them. Then I ranked them according to my interest and started builing myself a serious conservative, classic library in our home. It will take me years to buy all of them and even longer to read them all - but I'm detrminded!

A Must read for anyone going into a cross-cultural situation 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Don Smith has developed an excellent approach to learning communication in a cross-cultural setting - be it in another country, another ethnic group in your own, with your neighbor, who happens to come from a different background ... or with your wife! With his thorough explanation of the 23 propositions of human communication, combined with witty, explicit illustrations, Don Smith helps anyone who desires to be understood reach their goal. Especially helpful to me were the chapters on the 12 signal systems. I am an American living in Germany - working with Germans and internationals. Understanding the signal systems of communication has helped me to better learn my guest culture and understand what was being communicated - and to be understood as I attempted communication as well.

This book is written from a Christian perspective with communication of the Christian message in mind - however, don't let that hinder you from profiting from this valuable work. His bibliography 'communicates' the extent of his research in religious as well as secular circles.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to 'create understanding' in the mind of someone else.

Editorial Review:

Creating Understanding, a foundational book on which the enterprise of Christian ministry can be built, is a basic text and handbook for training and refining the skills of Christian communication.

Family Based Youth Ministry - A must for all Youth Minsters 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is a wonderful companion for all who are involved in youth ministry. It focuses on the importance of relationships in the success of the ministry. It doesn't mislead by asserting that all the answers are on the pages of this book. You will be challenged to move your ministry into a more lasting phase in which the adults of the congregation become integral parts of the foundation of the teens.

All youth ministers, youth deacons, and youth volunteers should own a copy of this book.

Editorial Review:

Have you tried all the new youth programs? Have you planned one too many wacky activities? Are you frustrated about the size of the youth group? Here's an approach to ministry that takes youth work seriously.Family-based youth ministry is about adults discipling teens one-on-one and in groups. It is about involving not just the nuclear family but the whole church family--from singles to older adults. More important, it's about incorporating youth into the life of your church. So stop worrying about the size of your youth group or your budget. Mark DeVries's refreshing approach to youth ministry will show you how your church can reach today's teens and how you can keep them involved in the life of the church. Whether you are a parent, a youth pastor or a church member who cares about teens, you will find in this book an entirely different approach to youth ministry that will build mature Christian believers.
