Excellent reference work 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this dictionary some years ago and it has been a constant companion to my bible. I take it everywhere I take my bible. I have compared the entries to other dictionaries and although it doesn't contain everything (what single volume can?) it does have certain references that are excluded by the others. For example, the term "ephod" I was unable to locate in any other dictionary but found it here not only with a definition but a picture as well. I enjoy just reading it by itself and have learned and clarified much. I highly recommend it as one of the best single volume pictorial dictionaries available to anyone seeking greater understanding of the Bible and the way things were.

Great reference, a must have for serious bible research 4 out of 5 stars.

While not completely exhaustive, it covers a tremendous range of topics with enough information to answer casual questions while pointing to further reference material for indepth study. A great starting place for almost any religious topic!

Editorial Review:

This is the best-selling one-volume Bible dictionary. More than 5,000 entries include discussions of historical, geographical, chronological, and biographical aspects of the Bible, as well as articles on theological subjects; more than 700 pictures are included as well.

Excellent Companion to Bible for Both Child and Adult! 5 out of 5 stars.
49 of 49 people found this review helpful.

This is definitely a worthy purchase if you have a child and as well if you (admit it) still get mixed up a bit with Middle East geography, especially when it comes to what an area was called years ago and what its present-day name is. When you read a passage to your child, show him with this each time where that scripture was taking place at that time period (the atlas shows name changes and political boundaries in different time segments). You both will have a much better understanding of what was taking place where and when.

The Student Bible Atlas 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been looking for just this kind of atlas for my 5th and 6th grade Sunday School class. The main thing I like about it is that it uses the same map of Israel and shows it at the various periods. Most atlases and Sunday School curricula show various maps instead of one map that changes over time. I liked the comparison maps of the empires. The comments and illustrations with each map are also useful.

Editorial Review:

Where did Moses cross the Red Sea? Why were so many battles fought across Palestine? And where did Paul's ship founder on the voyage to Rome. All of these questions are answered in the Atlas, an indispensable help to the serious Bible student.

Handbook for Christian Maturity 4 out of 5 stars.

We have been using this book as a resource for a Bible study. We have found that the text is very simple to understand and the questions are very thought provoking. It also has questions that require you to think about. There is no right or wrong answer to these questions. Sometimes you just need to take the time to think about and then write out your answer so that you can have a visual and that can cause you to reevaluate your thinking. We have really appreciated the authors insight and ability to use Scripture so effectively. It has really helped in our Christian growth!

great for organized group bible study 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

there is a lot of scripture look up, but this allows for in depth analysis of the bible. not a lot of commentary (just scripture look up & questions for you to answer on your own), but this doesn't matter if you're using this with an organized bible study group with a good leader who can help you answer questions if you're stuck.

Editorial Review:

This study series designed to provide you with a sure foundation for your faith, and to help you share your faith joyfully with others. The product of many years of extensive development, testing and revision.

52 of the Bible's greatest verses - and each one can be recalled just when you need it!

John MacArthur pours his heart into his work as a Bible teacher, and now he teaches Scripture, literally one verse at a time, with The MacArthur Scripture Memory System. The System comes in a beautiful turned-edge book, complete with the following timeless elements:

  • 3 audio CD's with Dr. MacArthur reading the verse-of-the-week, and providing a brief exposition of what that verse means and why it is so important to remember.
  • A handy pack of printed cards, one for each verse, so that you can put one in your wallet or purse to refresh your memory of the weekly verse.
  • CD-ROM containg a dynamic desktop complete with the text of week's verse and a link to listen to the audio of the verse! Also contains a screen saver with each week's verse.

For old and new Bible readers alike, The MacArthur Scripture Memory System is an excellent way to really get into the Word and commit it to memory.

A useful tool for small group directors... 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have read other books from Donahue and Robinson and heard them speak at several small groups conference, so the information in this book was relatively familiar to me. Nonetheless, "The Seven Deadly Sins of Small Group Ministry" is a valuable resources in which these small group gurus share their experiences and failures in the hopes that others involved in small group ministry within the local church can avoid those same missteps.

One thing that I appreciate about this book is its straightforward format. The seven deadly sins of small group ministry, as assessed by the authors, each occupy two chapters. The first chapter on each sin describes the problem, and the second chapter provides some solutions. This allows the reader to pick and choose a particular issue and read about it in some detail without having to read the entire book. I appreciated the experience of reading it straight through but look forward to referring to it in the future on one or more specific topics, and the simple format makes that notion feasible.

The second thing that I appreciated most about this book was the author's experience and wisdom. It is clear that they have gathered insight from years of small group ministry, and they are honest in stating that they have actually committed almost all of the sins at one point or another. That humility (and the almost playful writing style throughout the book) makes the information very accessible. The suggestions are not coming from some perfect small group geniuses, but instead come from real people who have made real mistakes and can offer real solutions.

My primary criticism of the book is that a somewhat limited perspective is provided. It only makes sense that they would write from the framework of Willow Creek, where they both spent much of their ministry lives. However, they seem unable to extract themselves from the Willow way of doing things. Quite frankly, the assimilation structure that they suggest is nothing if not overwhelming. In fact, the entire book is rather formidable. Again, it is formidable because they have so much important information to share, but it might be more useful if they had eliminated some of the painstaking detail and emphasized the main ideas.

I am glad that I read this book, and I know that it will shape how I proceed in my role in leadership over the small groups at our church. We are actually committing several of these deadly sins right now, and I now have the ammunition to make some necessary adjustments. If you are willing to dive into the thick of Willow Creek's learning from groups, this is a great book. I highly recommend it.

A wonderful resource for discussion groups 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Paula Carlson and Peter Hawkins have over the past several years pulled together short stories and a few essays, three volumes in all, from contemporary authors in which faith concerns of all types are raised. The authors are first-rate and include the well known--John Updike, Flannery O'Connor, Gail Godwin, John Cheever and others--to lesser known authors like Tillie Olsen and Tess Gallgher. Each of the volumes includes a leader's guide, and volumes 1 and 2 include videos with interviews of the authors or of people who knew the author.

These are excellent volumes for discussion groups that bring out the multitude of issues, problems, life crises that each of has or will face. The relationship to faith and religion are sometimes clear, sometimes not so obvious, but all present situations of interest and, often, deep concern, for individuals. Having facilitated two of this series, the atmosphere provided by the stories and their general literary excellence leads easily into discussions where people can reflect anew on the importance of grace and the mystery of God in our lives

Editorial Review:

Listening for God is a resource intended to help readers investigate how life and faith merge in surprising ways and places. The authors lead a tour through contemporary American literature to show how God is discovered in unpredictable locations.

Great Book on Worship 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

While it is an effort to worth through the first few chapters, the gold mine of discussion on the real meaning and purpose of worship is well worth the effort. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to live a life in worship of the Almighty God.

Editorial Review:

Too often Christians have only thought of worship in terms of particular musical styles or liturgical formats. But a proper view of worship is far larger than what takes place in churches on Sunday mornings. All of us, Christian or not, are always worshiping, whether or not that worship is directed toward God. We are unceasing worshipers.

In this fruition of a lifetime of study, reflection and experience, Harold Best casts a holistic vision for worship as continuous outpouring in all settings and contexts. With careful exposition and eloquent analysis, Best addresses popular misunderstandings about the use of music and offers correctives toward a more biblically consistent practice of artistic action.

Incisive, provocative, profound and comprehensive, Best's landmark volume is one by which all other statements on worship and the arts will be measured.

Do you ever wonder why Jeffrey talks all of the time?
Or why Toni can't sit still? Or why Alex loves work sheets?
Or why Jordan is always trying something new?

Each chapter is fun to read, stimulating, and immensely practical. This book is valuable to teachers, and for preachers, too.

It's about time.
Creative Teaching Methods is not just another book on the theory of creativity (which we don't need). Rather, it is a book on the practice of creativity in the classroom (which we desperately need). This is a book you will use over and over again.
Creative Teaching Methods is loaded with practical and usable ideas that will make creative teaching a reality in your classroom. Without hesitation, I would recommend this book to anyone who teaches young people or adults.
