Editorial Review:

Teachers from several generations have found solid, basic advice in John Milton Gregory's clear and concise presentation of the laws of teaching. The frequent reprintings of this 1884 classic testify to the timelessness of its contents.

This is a great book 5 out of 5 stars.

I got this book in the library, but I am going to buy it, because I liked it so much. So what, if it is a reprint. Books get reprinted for a reason. Exploring the universal condition loneliness, it goes way beyond this fashonable self-help stuff (join a social club, become a volunteer). It cuts through to the very heart of the matter. We are lonely, because we are alienated and seperated from our true nature: We are spiritual beings, we are Soul, we are a spark of God. And as long as we don't recognize our true nature, no amount of entertainment or volunteering will ease our pain. This is, what the book is about, and I could not agree more.

Editorial Review:

A thoughtful exploration of loneliness, in the tradition of Henri Nouwen's classic Reaching Out. Loneliness may be more pervasive now than at any other time in human history. Cell phones and "instant messaging" not withstanding, our longing for meaningful connections seems to increase in direct proportion to our accessibility.

In The Restless Heart, Ronald Rolheiser identifies different types of loneliness and discusses the dangers and opportunities they represent in our lives. Using contemporary parables from literature, film, and his own life, he shows that loneliness can be a tremendously creative and even valuable force when it is recognized, accepted and used as a dynamic catalyst. With his trademark clarity of vision, honesty, and intelligence, Rolheiser offers a distinctively Christian approach to living an examined, involved life and presents suggestions that will free readers to discover greater meaning and fulfillment in their own lives.

Editorial Review:

What is “Christian” about Christian education; how is it different from on-Christian education? A Theology for Christian Education examines this question in depth and argues that the doctrines of systematic theology should drive the content, purpose, and methods of the educational program of the c hurch. The book states:

“Christian education is distinct from other kinds of education in that its aim is the transformation of the whole person into the likeness of Christ (Col. 1 :28). Christian education is the process of accomplishing this aim.”

A Theology for Christian Education dedicates chapters to examining particular doctrines and their implications for Christian education. It is the only serious academic text to offer a systematic presentation of the intersection of theology and Christian education from a conservative evangelical perspective.

Excellent content, lacks continuity 3 out of 5 stars.
25 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I wrote a glowing review of the Prayer of Jabez on December 13, 2000. I gave it five stars and still consider it to be one of the best books on how to pray. I was looking forward to the Prayer of Jabez Bible Study. I could hardly wait until it was published. Now, I have taught through the Bible Study with a small group at my church. I'm ready now to review it for you.

I found the study to have some excellent content. Christians need to know the information contained in this study. However, I found that the study lack continuity (thus my three star rating). The study states that you can do the study without reading through the Prayer of Jabez at the same time. Several members of our group took that advice. I think it was detrimental to their study. The book flows well and keeps you connected. The study does not flow as well, is spread over four weeks, and doesn't keep you connected to the weekly theme very well. I would definitely advise using the book with the study.

One difficult part of the study is that there is no answer key. Some of the Scripture references related to the questions did not seem to connect at all. I even have the reprinted editions that Multnomah re-released after fixing the mistakes in the first printing. I also used the leader's guide for the study. The leader's guide doesn't reveal the author's thinking on all the questions either. It does provide a basic guide to facilitating the small group, but not much more than that. I had to write my own teaching plans for our group.

One other criticism. The study looks at the four sections of Jabez's prayer. Wilkinson here fleshes out the biblical meaning of Blessing, Territory, Hand and Keep Me From Evil. I think the study, and those going through the study, would have benefited from one more week dedicated to the exploration of what it means to be honorable in the eyes of God. The book addresses it, but the study does not.

Anyway, the study has great content, even if it lacks continuity. I would definitely recommend it. I hope you enjoy it and I hope God will bless you indeed.

Editorial Review:

The Prayer of Jabez Bible Study reveals how to make praying the Jabez prayer a lifetime habit. Readers will broaden their understanding of the four components of the Jabez prayer ("bless me; enlarge my borders; keep Your hand upon me; keep me from evil") by investigating key scriptural passages and learning how to apply them to their lives. Graphics and lighthearted illustrations make this innovative, four-week study impactful and fun. An eighty-page Leader's Edition with two additional, optional sessions is also available.

This is an excelant program and the guide is very good if you attend the class.

I guess I am a below average Christian 5 out of 5 stars.

Comments from commenter #2 crack me up. I have heard many folks refer to John Ortberg as "Dallas Willard Lite" or "Dallas for dummies." I have had the opportunity to spend time with both the author and his wife, and I find both his speaking and writing to be very refreshing to my mind, spirit and life. I find John's writing simple and practical. Is it Dallas Willard deep? No. However, it's more like a great message that you hear in a weekend service. One that you can see clearly how applicable it is. Also, for you to get the most out of this book, you need to have a sense of your own brokenness and fallenness. Otherwise, you will find it simple and for average or below average people.........which, if I recall, is the same peeps that Jesus TOTALLY hung out with and loved deeply. In fact, some of their names were Peter, James, John, Andrew, Thomas..............

Editorial Review:

The story of the Bible is the story of God’s desire to be with his people. God is extending himself, stretching out to reach us and to fill our lives with his presence. Every moment of your life is like a page in a Where’s Waldo book. God is there, the Scriptures tell us, but the ease with which he may be found varies from one page to the next. God is closer than you think! A six-session guide to be used with the DVD curriculum.

Great, but missing one important item . . . . 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm really excited about using this dvd for a high school bible study, however it does not include the participant's guide as stated in the editorial review. This is very important, because when you receive the dvd it states on it that you need a participant guide for each group member. When the review said it included that, I thought it must be on the dvd-rom and you could print it out. Not so! You must buy them separately!

Editorial Review:

In this six-session DVD study, Lee Strobel investigates the latest scientific discoveries to see whether they form a solid basis for believing in God.

Worth reading for every church leader... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

"The Church of Irresistible Influence" is one of the most compelling books that I've ever read about what the church can and should be. I'm not one to casually embrace huge concepts on a whim, so I'm not yet convinced that every notion from this book is appropriate or even workable in many churches. In fact, Lewis' church has undergone some significant organizational changes since he wrote the book. I would be most intrigued to read a sequel that describes the process of becoming a church of irresistible influence after several more years of experience.

In any case, perfect model or not, Lewis presents many extremely dynamic examples of how his church (and, more specifically, the people within his church) began to impact the Little Rock community in amazing ways. It's great to read those stories of connection, blessing, and service, particularly as so many churches are becoming painfully aware of how useless they really are to their communities.

I would strongly recommend this book to any modern church leader, not because I think that every church should adopt this exact model of church structure, but because it presents some big issues and paradigm-shifting ideas that have the potential to totally redefine the impact of the American church. It just might totally rearrange the way you think about church!!

Editorial Review:

An inspiring description and story showing how a church can become an irresistible influence on its neighborhood, community, and world by building bridges over troubled waters to a dying culture through showing the love of God in action.

Editorial Review:

Commissioned in 1993, this new translation of The Book of Concord brings a new generation of scholarship and sensitivities to bear on the foundational texts of Lutheran identity. The fifth English translation since 1851, this edition succeeds that edited by Theodore Tappert published in 1959 by Muhlenburg Press.

A review of the text in light of a mountain of new scholarship and other factors dictated the new translation and apparatus, including changes in the English language over the past forty years, differences in the training and preparation of seminarians and pastors, limitations in the introductions and annotations to the various parts of the book, new knowledge of the history and theology of these very documents, and the occasional error in Tappert's translation.

Kolb and Wengert's team of leading Reformation historians was augmented by consultation with one hundred other scholars and teachers who use The Book of Concord continually, and two other teams of scholars who have reviewed the translations. In coming years, two volumes of related documents will follow.

Benefits of this new translation: Expanded introductions and annotations offer richer historical context New translation aims at accessible but accurate translation Format is easier to read and use Leading American scholars have been involved or consulted
