Excellent Leadership Resource! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I've read a "bunch" of leadership books during my 30 years as an Associate Pastor-Education in churches ranging from 300 to 3,000 in weekend attendance.

I would rate the workbook,Coaching Life-Changing Small Group Leaders, in the top 10%.

It's an "easy read" with many practical ideas for not only coaching small group leaders, but for coaching people in both church and secular settings.

Try it! You'll like it! (and you leaders will be glad!)

small groups coaching - crucial piece in sustainability 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

One could choose to 'learn by doing'. Very tiring and stressful. Coaching small group leaders is, not surprisingly, as essential to success as coaching any athletic team. No coach? Enjoy the chaos. There will be blood on the field very soon. It's self-destructive to avoid this resource if a church is hoping to employ small groups. It is as good as the 'Leading Small Groups' book reviewed close by. Forms to use, goals toward which to strive, step-by-step pathways to follow, meeting agendas to fill in... what will you address with your leaders? What are the goals specific to each leader? How does the leader monitor the life of his or her group? What are the personal goals of the leader for 5G development (Growth, Gifts, Good stewardship...)? What are your goals as Coach? Where do you even find a list of possible goals? This is organized, educationally sound, Biblical, realistic. Thank you, Willow.

Editorial Review:

The must-have resource for coaches who shepherd and care for small group leaders.

Editorial Review:

As Saint Thérèse lay dying in the Carmel of Lisieux, she overheard a conversation that amused her. Outside her window, two nuns were discussing what they could write in her obituary that could possibly be of any interest, since the twenty-four-year-old nun had never done anything worth noting. Thérèse was pleased, for she had always kept a low profile. With the posthumous publication of her spiritual autobiography in 1898, however, that low profile would vanish instantly. She became one of the most beloved saints of all time, and her influence will expand dramatically because of Pope John Paul II's declaration that she is a Doctor of the Church. Amid growing interest in her writings comes the collected correspondence between herself and a humble young seminarian, Maurice Bellière. Though they never met in person, they exchanged twenty-one letters that open a window on the heart of Saint Thérèse that would have remained forever closed had Maurice not written to the Mother Superior at the convent asking for a nun to pray for him. The Mother Superior chose Thérèse, and in these conversational letters the Little Flower reveals herself in a way that we would never have known from her autobiography. In his accompanying text, Bishop Patrick Ahern expertly leads the reader into the worlds of Maurice and Thérèse and reveals the full beauty of this saint's spirituality.

Family Based Youth Ministry - A must for all Youth Minsters 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is a wonderful companion for all who are involved in youth ministry. It focuses on the importance of relationships in the success of the ministry. It doesn't mislead by asserting that all the answers are on the pages of this book. You will be challenged to move your ministry into a more lasting phase in which the adults of the congregation become integral parts of the foundation of the teens.

All youth ministers, youth deacons, and youth volunteers should own a copy of this book.

Editorial Review:

Have you tried all the new youth programs? Have you planned one too many wacky activities? Are you frustrated about the size of the youth group? Here's an approach to ministry that takes youth work seriously.Family-based youth ministry is about adults discipling teens one-on-one and in groups. It is about involving not just the nuclear family but the whole church family--from singles to older adults. More important, it's about incorporating youth into the life of your church. So stop worrying about the size of your youth group or your budget. Mark DeVries's refreshing approach to youth ministry will show you how your church can reach today's teens and how you can keep them involved in the life of the church. Whether you are a parent, a youth pastor or a church member who cares about teens, you will find in this book an entirely different approach to youth ministry that will build mature Christian believers.

Editorial Review:

Do you ever wonder why Jeffrey talks all of the time?
Or why Toni can't sit still? Or why Alex loves work sheets?
Or why Jordan is always trying something new?

Learning Styles answers these questions and more. Effective learning follows a natural four-step process that answers these four questions:

• WHY DO I NEED THIS?

• WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT MY NEED?

• HOW DOES WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES ACTUALLY WORK?

• HOW WILL I USE WHAT I HAVE LEARNED?

By answering each of these questions, we will appeal to the four learning styles: Imaginative, Analytic, Common Sense, and Dynamic. A learning style is the way in which a person sees or perceives things best and then uses that knowledge. When we understand learning styles and adjust our teaching or parenting to those styles, we begin reaching everyone God gives us to teach.

A wonderful book capable of teaching us how we learn . . . and what to do with all that knowledge once we've learned it. Practical, helpful, and an eye-opening book for all of us in the teaching trade—from mothers to professors! I heartily recommend this be a must for your bookshelf.

JILL BRISCOE, AUTHOR, SPEAKER

Learning Styles displays Marlene LeFever at her best. Few people see others in terms of their learning capability. Fewer still dedicate themselves to the study of how understanding occurs. Marlene long ago grabbed my attention and admiration with her teaching skills. Her insights deserve thoughtful reading by every teacher and meaningful discussion in every teacher training meeting. Learning should stir up pleasure and she shows us how.

HOWARD G. HENDRICKS, CHAIRMAN
CENTER FOR CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP DALLAS THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

. . . great teachers and preachers throughout the history of the church have realized the importance of answering the why, what, so what, and how questions.... The author has isolated and tied these elements to the teaching context so that their incorporation will be purposeful. Anyone involved in the communication process will be benefitted by Learning Styles....

DR. TONY EVANS, PASTOR
OAK CLIFF BIBLE FELLOWSHIP DALLAS, TEXAS

Easy reading, but not simplistic. Many authors ask hard questions; Marlene dares to suggest answers.... We now have no excuse for careless teaching.
MICHAEL S. LAWSON, PH D., PRESIDENT
PROFESSIONAL ASSOC. OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATORS (PACE)

Marlene D. LeFever is Manager of Ministry Relations for David C. Cook Church Ministries, holds a master of Christian education and is a frequent speaker at Sunday School conventions, writers' conferences, and professional organizations. Editor of Teacher Touch, a quarterly letter of affirmation for Sunday School teachers, Marlene has authored over ten books, including Creative Teaching Methods (Cook), Creative Hospitality (Tyndale) and Is Your To Do List About To Do You In?

Every Christian educator can benefit from this book—teachers and administrators alike, whether new to the task or with years of experience. Based on the premise that different persons learn in a variety of ways, all legitimate, the author shows clearly how teachers may recognize students who learn in these different ways, plan and teach lessons that involve all of them through the use of a wide variety of appropriate methods, and at the same time reinforce each student's sense of achievement. The same understandings are applied to leader recruitment and development. The book sparkles with appropriate anecdotes, live cases, and practical suggestions. It will be useful both in workshops and for personal study.

When the stateswoman of Christian Education puts pen to her magnum opus, the benefits are all ours: teachers, students, and administrators. What a mother lode of resources this is! Imaginative, thorough, engaging, and accessible—characteristic of Marlene's own teaching style. Lights will come on in your head, and you'll never be the same teacher, or student, again.

Jerry B. Jenkins
Author and Writer-in-Residence
Moody Bible Institute

As Gardner broadened the world of teaching by identifying multiple intelligences which learners utilize in the process of learning, so Marlene LeFever has enhanced Christian education by identifying the presence of four kinds of learners in our classrooms. Good teaching comes from remembering that it's like not to know. Marlene has made us aware of what it is like "not to know" when what is being taught is outside our learning frame. She has given us insight and tools for building learners' esteem and for realizing their learning potential. As anyone who knows Marlene would anticipate she has done such with rousing enthusiasm, captivating flair, and catalytic creativity. This book will enable the exploration of whole new frontiers of learning for those who teach in the church.

Insightful and practical 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I've known Chuck since he was my grader in Thom Rainer's "Introduction to Church Growth" class at Southern Seminary in the Fall of 1995. During my own M.Div. and Ph.D. work, he became more than a grader. Chuck became my friend.

I'm currently serving as chairman of my home church's Long-range Planning Committee. One area in which we've identified a great need for improvement is in our new member orientation and current member commitment and service. I consider it providential that in researching books to aid in our task, I came across Lawless' work on those very subjects. I read "Membership Matters" over two days, taking copious notes in the margins and underlying liberally.

Few books address membership classes and church member assimilation. Thom Rainer's "High Expectations" called churches to ask more from members as a means of increasing church health and commitment. Lawless' book moves a step further by providing a practical guide for church pastors and leaders to design and implement membership classes, not only to better incorporate new members, but also to inspire older, non-serving members to get involved in ministry service.

Buy this book. Digest it. Discuss it. But more importantly, put its suggestions into practice.

Editorial Review:

Based on a national study, this book shows how churches can move both new and old members into ministry by implementing effective new members’ classes.

Editorial Review:

The second edition of The Teaching Ministry of the Church makes a major overhaul of its predecessor, increasing the content from eighteen to twentythree chapters and contributors from six to thirteen. These writers assert the need for such an expanded update is due to our everchanging world. For example, the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, proliferation of religious sects, and secularization of our culture greatly increase the importance of ensuring the church produces fully developed, biblically informed followers of Jesus.

To that end, The Teaching Ministry of the Church presents a full overview of Christian education in four major sections: Theological Foundations, Biblical Foundations, Preparation for Teaching, and Structuring the Teaching Ministry of the Church. Within this framework, a step-by-step plan for establishing and maintaining an effective teaching ministry among preschoolers, children, youth, and adults takes shape.

Key chapters: “The Bible as Curriculum,” “The Church’s Role in Teaching,” “Creating an Unforgettable Learning Experience,” and “Equipping Teachers.”

This is a wonderful product for those going through recovery of so many things. It doesn't have to be drugs or alcohol. It can be anger, abuse, co-dependency, and many others. This is the first book in a series of books designed to help you through the whole process.

Editorial Review:

Drawn from the Beatitudes, Celebrate Recovery helps people resolve painful problems in the context of the church as a whole. Rather than setting up an isolated recovery community, it helps participants and their churches come together and discover new levels of care, acceptance, trust, and grace.

Editorial Review:

At the heart of the family-both human and Catholic-faith is nurtured and practiced, pastors with communities, parents with children, and catechists with students. This catechesis happens in many places, is led by many different people, and requires a multiplicity of materials. The newNational Directory for Catechesis (NDC) is the resource that provides the inspiration for all catechesis in the United States and the reference point for formation of catechists and preparation of catechetical materials. A companion to the General Directory for Catechesis, the NDC builds on its themes and contextualizes catechesis within the life of the Church in the United States, paying close attention to ongoing social and cultural challenges. At its core is a desire to renew catechesis in dioceses, parishes, and schools, to fire a new energy and commitment to proclaim the Gospel. Comprehensive in scope, the NDC provides the fundamental theological and pastoral principles and offers guidelines for applying those principles within the catechetical mission of the Church in the United States. The NDC is divided into ten chapters that delve into the catechesis and diversity, evangelization, the faith of the Church, methodology, worship and sacraments, moral formation, the settings for catechesis, those who catechize, catechetical ministry, and resources. Throughout the NDC, it is reinforced that Jesus is the heart of catechesis regardless of where catechesis takes place. The NDC is a "must-have" for anyone in catechesis or Catholic education-teachers, principals, directors and coordinators of religious education and youth ministry, catechists, and students in the field.
