Receiving Emotional Healing. You will learn: -How to deal with the emotional pain of abuse. -How to understand your responsibility to God for overcoming abuse. -Why victims of abuse often suffer from other addictive behaviors. -How to grab hold of God's unconditional love. -The importance of God's timing in working through painful memories. Many people seem to have it all together outwardly, but inside they are a wreck. Their past has broken, crushed and wounded them inwardly. They can be healed. God has a plan, and Isaiah 61 reveals that the Lord came to heal the brokenhearted. He wants to heal victims of abuse! Joyce Meyer is a victim of the physical and sexual abuse she suffered as a child. Yet today she has a nationwide ministry of emotional healing to others like herself. In Beauty for Ashes she outlines major truths that brought healing into her life and describes how other victims of abuse can also experience God's healing in their lives. Joyce Meyer suffered for thirty-three years the devastating effects of abuse. Now, God has exchanged her ashes for beauty and called her to help others allow Him to do the same for them.

Preparing for Adolescence 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

What parent is prepared for the roller coaster ride of adolescence when their first child starts "growing up"? I thought I wouldn't have to think about it until my child was 13! Ha! The moodiness has already started -- at 10!

I enjoyed this book by Dr. Dobson, a well known & trusted author. The book helps the parent see this phase from the child's perspective and is written in a style the child can relate to. It assists them in trying to make sense of it all. It offers the child a preview of what to expect as radical physical and emotional changes begin and suggestions of how to handle them with practical common sense and their faith. The section addressing the "facts of life" is respectful, frank and thorough, but only offers age appropriate "details". It is appropriate enough for a 10 year old.

The book cover-to-cover may not keep the attention of a 10-12 year old who is accustomed to reading "action" type books, but if they are searching for answers, it's all there. Whether you buy the book for guidance as a parent, for your child to read, or as a tool to open up discussion on these topics, it is a worthwhile purchase.

Editorial Review:

In this 8 tape package with guidelines for parents on what to expect and what to say, Dr. Dobson's candid, friendly discussions spoken directly to teens.

two thumbs up... 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

... for J.F. Foster's review, not this book!

Thankfully, I snagged a copy at a thrift store for less than a dollar. I skimmed through and promptly threw it away. There's nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary in this book - live what you believe. People smell a hypocrite a mile away!

I agree 100% with Foster's review, though I couldn't conceive of giving the book four stars simply because there are much better resources available.

My top resource for practical guidance on sharing the gospel is The Way of the Master with Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron. Nothing watered down here - very direct application of the Gospel in the manner of Jesus Christ and His apostles.

My second recommended resource is Share Jesus Without Fear. Very practical and many more examples than Hybels' book. The author comes across a bit too cocky at times (in his "soul-winning" ability) but, overall, the book is good and offers many great ideas.

"Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Matthew 22:36-40

A Challenge to see God in all I do! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I put off reading this book for a while, but when I got my Kindle this was one of the first that I purchased for it. I can only say that I wish I had read it sooner.

I appreciate the challenge that John gives us to keep God in the forefront of all that we do. I know this may sound difficult, but I believe that as he states with practice it becomes easier.

I have found that you can't just read this book, you have to put it into action in your life. If you do I believe you will be amazed at how much more you see God in all that you do daily.

Thank you John for the challenge to sit at the feet of Jesus and learn!

Book will change your perspective on your circumstances. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is well written, easy to understand and apply to your life now. It's so good it's worth being read more than once. The other thing I discovered is that when applying what you have read your behavior is changed and you are renewed no matter what you are experiencing.

Editorial Review:

Every moment of your life is like a page in a Where’s Waldo book. God is there, the Scriptures tell us—on every one of them. But the ease with which he may be found varies from one page to the next. God is closer than you think!

Wasn't what I was looking for 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I read this book with a group of teachers as part of our book club. I had high hopes that it would provide some great discussion. After the first few chapters nobody liked it. Out of the 8 of us that read it, not one of us actually enjoyed the book. There were some good points, but too philisophical for our taste.

Editorial Review:

"This book is for teachers who have good days and bad -- and whose bad days bring the suffering that comes only from something one loves. It is for teachers who refuse to harden their hearts, because they love learners, learning, and the teaching life."
- Parker J. Palmer [from the Introduction]

Teachers choose their vocation for reasons of the heart, because they care deeply about their students and about their subject. But the demands of teaching cause too many educators to lose heart. Is it possible to take heart in teaching once more so that we can continue to do what good teachers always do -- give heart to our students?

In The Courage to Teach, Parker Palmer takes teachers on an inner journey toward reconnecting with their vocation and their students -- and recovering their passion for one of the most difficult and important of human endeavors.

Great for Developing Leaders! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Looking for leader training ideas? Simple Small Groups: A User-Friendly Guide for Small Group Leaders, newly released by Baker Books and written by Bill Search, a veteran small group practitioner, is a great new resource designed to make effective small group ministry simple.

Rather than over-complicate the subject, Search isolates three simple and essential ingredients that every effective group must have, identifies them with a single word, and then proceeds to explain the role played by each of them. The best part? He goes on to flesh out the nuts and bolts of how it works.

There are a number of really helpful sections. My favorite aspect is that each section concludes with a diagnostic set of questions to help determine what your next step is in the development of each essential component. I can easily see this getting a lot of use!

If you're like me, you're looking for resources that are about how it can be better. Simple Small Groups: A User-Friendly Guide for Small Group Leaders is one of those.

Editorial Review:

Over the past two decades, small groups have gone from spontaneous gatherings among friends to a major and elaborate phenomenon in the church. Many evangelical churches have some form of small groups ministry in place. But there's just one problem, says Bill Search--what started as a simple get-together has become a complicated process, especially for small group leaders. They are often not sure what is expected of them or what to expect from their groups as a result of their efforts. In Simple Small Groups, Search lays out the three C's of small groups--connecting, changing, and cultivating. This paradigm helps to simplify leading small groups in a way that is helpful, rewarding, and life changing. Unlike many other books geared toward small group leaders, Simple Small Groups does not require a church-wide adoption of an intricately designed system of assimilation, making it useful to any small group leader looking for guidance.

Editorial Review:

How do 16-year-olds live out their Christian faith in class? Flipping burgers? In youth group?

By being roaring lambs, that’s how.

Roaring lambs? They’re Christians--your high school students--who leave the Christian ghetto and take the salt of the gospel with them into mainstream culture.

This six-session curriculum shows students how to decompartmentalize their faith--to intentionally bring their faith out of the youth room and let it saturate all aspects of their lives--schools, jobs, friends, romance, home, and more--to be a Christ-follower, rather than merely do Christ-things. With topics like this:

Bleeding Hearts in Bleating Sheep. Unless your love of God is transformed into outward behavior, you’re only a bleating sheep instead of a roaring lamb.

Welcome to the Ghetto. Are you in a Christian-programmed culture--a Christian ghetto? Then tear down the walls so you can see the world and the world can see you.

Welcome to the World. You’re not in Kansas anymore. Here’s the difference between being in the world and being of the world.

The Salt of the Earth. In praise of a high-sodium diet. You’re the flavoring and preservative of the world!

Careers 101. Will the real Christians please stand up? Pastors and missionaries are not the only ones who serve God.

The curriculum includes a music CD (produced by Squint Entertainment) of all-new songs from top CCM artists, including Jars of Clay . . . Sixpence None the Richer . . . Burlap to Cashmere . . . Delirious . . . Ashley Cleveland . . . Steven Curtis Chapman . . . Michael W. Smith . . . Ladysmith Black Mambazo . . . Over the Rhine . . . and more.

For youth workers, Sunday school teachers, small-group leaders, camp counselors, DREs, pastors--anyone who wants to help teenage Christians take their faith out of the youth room and into the world. And become roaring lambs.

Solid and readable 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The first thing one must admit in reviewing one of Metzger's work is that next to no one is qualified to review one of Metzger's works. One of the most noted biblical scholars of a century, it's unlikely that any casual reader can take aim at him.

That said, the book is written for the casual reader, and in that sense is very accessible and unintimidating. There are even points at which, for the scholar or preacher, one might wish he would go into more detail concerning the first century context. The details of the eruption of Vesuvius and the threat of the Parthians are eye-opening, but Metzger gives them each only a passing notice. Nontheless, for an introduction to the Book of Revelation from the perspective of one who is not anticipating a literal, science-fiction fulfillment of the book in the future, this is a perfect read.

What is strongest about the book is that Metzger unpacks some of the most significant images of the text: the beast, the prostitute, the dragon and the lamb. He shows the first-century implications for the Roman Empire and lets us into the heart of one of Jesus' disciples, comforting a persecuted congregation. He interprets the symbols the way apocalyptic literature should be interpreted, as cosmic projections of present-day events. And all of this is done within the realm of Christian orthodoxy. In the end, it's a solid, reliable, insightful, brief book by a humble and talented scholar.

Editorial Review:

The book of Revelation contains passages of great beauty and comfort, as well as passages that strike the casual reader as bizarre, bewildering, and sometimes frightening. How are readers today to discern God's message in this peculiar part of the Bible? In this book Metzger presents solid scholarship in a nonacademic style. The book includes a list of resources for further study, a study guide for 8-13 sessions and can be used in personal or group study.
