Henri Nouwen examines his life after a near death accident in which he encounters the Living God.

Facing the possibililty of dying he is able to let go and let God's unconditional love come to him and accept himself as God sees him.

His recovery from the accident brings about many changes in his attitude towards his family, friends, acquaintances and yes even his enemies. The experience brought resolve and forgiveness for his sins and the sins of others.

To come back to the living and take his daily cross was very difficult, since he had already prepared himself for the next life with Christ. To return to the former routine seemed impossible at that time but before long he had gone back to his former ways and was constantly trying to keep the peace that he had found during his illness.

Another book that touches on going to the mountain top and coming back would be "Hind's Feet on High Places" Hinds' Feet on High Places an allegory by Hannah Hurnard.

I've enjoyed what I've read so far. Good writers and a great idea of breaking up the four ways of seeing the scripture right on the same pages.

Ten days after the attacks on the World Trade Center Towers, I stood at Ground Zero and tried to take in the aftermath of one horrific day.

The thoughts of that made me cry out to God, No way! There’s just no way evil can be that deep and that dark!
But strangely, while the ashes smoldered around me, and the grief of it overwhelmed me, a profound hope rose in my heart--the local church is the hope of the world.

There were many people and organizations helping out after the disaster. But a work of a deeper kind was happening behind the scenes in downtown Manhattan. The most important work of all was being done by pastors and church members, volunteers of churches, ordinary Christ followers. They were in the middle of all the misery, addressing the concerns of the soul.

It was happening 24 hours a day. That was the untold media story. So many other organizations met the external needs of people, but it was the church that reached out to care for the inner needs of their fellow human beings. The church became the physicians for the souls of people. That experience underscored, yet again, the convictions that have been forming in Bill Hybels for the past 30 years--that the church has an unique mission to fulfill on planet Earth. And that the future of our society depends on whether or not church leaders understand that and focus the vision of local churches accordingly.

Where Bill’s heart beats the fastest is with leaders in local churches. He believes to the core of his being that local church leaders have the potential to be the most influential force in the world. If they "get it," churches will be the redemption centers for change that Jesus imagined them being.

So that’s Bill’s hope--that the spiritual gift of leadership will come alive in churches everywhere and, as a result, the church will become the force in the world against which the gates of hell cannot prevail.

I've been trying to read the bible for years but just could not get into it. This book is "the best of" the bible and actually makes it readable. And better yet, it's understandable! I love the sense of humor the writers have (of the guide not the bible itself) - I actually laughed out loud at one of the titles. This book truly does make reading the bible an enjoyable experience.

I love this quick and easy reading reference to the Bible. It gives me the opportunity to read the Bible in conjuction with this book which makes all the diference in the world when you are such a babe in this area. I am teaching myself from this book in the hopes that my understanding of the Bible is widened Love it Love it Love it

I taught this class and used these books. The Participants guide should be required for the video, as the two go hand in hand. The Workbook (and book) can be used but aren't required - they do offer deeper study into Boundaries, than the Participants Guide. I found the course fabulous and recommend everyone should go through it or at least be familiar with it.

Right up there near Brother Lawrence's "The Practice of the Presence of God" (free online at the Practice Gods Presence web site) are the wonderful works of Andrew Murray. "Absolute Surrender" is a classic in every sense.

These gifted children of God have a way of restating, enlivening, and magnifying the very words of Our Lord and do greatly glorify Our Father.

This book changed my whole approach in teaching. If you are serious about your audience actually learning from what you teach, this is the book to read. I will be using this book as my primary resource for teaching a class to Sunday School teachers on "Teaching to Change Lives" at my church this winter. Read and then do!

I had to return this book as the supplier did not ship it in time and I could not use it. I am disappointed as I thought it would be a good resource. I will not be using this supplier again.

Excellent family devotion resource 4 out of 5 stars.

I do daily devotions with my kids and it can be hard to find a resource useful for both a 5 yr old boy and 11 yr old girl. This book works perfectly. Rock solid theology with pleasant discussion material. It does move along slowly (37 weeks alone on the specifics of the 10 Commandments) but it can be done in 15 minutes a day. If you are new at devotions or just want solid teaching instead of feel-good fluff I strongly recommend this book. Best for ages 3 to 15 but new Christians of any age could get a good basic education with this daily devotional.

I highly recommend "Training Hearts, Teaching Minds" by Starr Meade for anyone who has a family, or is in any way involved in the Biblical training of anyone, of any age, no matter how long they've been born again. As a church planting Pastor this is a book that I recommend that all of my congregation get, read, and apply to their daily lives and personal / family devotions. It will continue to reinforce the basics of the Christian life and take you continually deeper into the depths of God's Word. This is the first, but certainly not the last, thing I will be reading and recommending by Starr Meade; I will continue to praise Jesus for this book!

The book is excellent. The only problem is that there was a malfunction in the ordering process. I wanted instant click and apparently instead of turning that on, the book was ordered by regular process AND a shipping charge placed on it. Thinking that the order process had failed I went back to the site and once again tried the instant click. That time it worked but then shortly afterwards I was advised that two books were ordered. I contacted Amazon and was told it was too late to cancel either order - that they were two seperate shipments but they would deduct the shipping charge. The books arrived in about a week - sealed and packed TOGETHER in the same parcel. Now I have to find someone else to gift the book to as opposed to trying to figure out a no-cost way to return it to Amazon.
