Full of illustrations and nuggets 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I teach a leadership course and tell my students I will read and review the business or leadership books they recommend. I was skeptical at first, most attempts to create Bible oriented business books fail. However, in this case the authors chose to use Good to Great, one of the best business books of the decade, as a primary focusing lens and there is a single Bible verse at the end of each chapter.

The story begins with the observation leaders are often forged in the furnace of life. Billy got off easy this once. His furnace experience was being rejected for marriage by Emily, saying "I just don't see any real purpose in your life yet." The statement stung and after months of consideration, Billy decided to be fully committed to God. The story then moves to Theodore Roosevelt, who was also pursing his life's true love. He got the girl, but only for three years, soon after his father passed away, his mother and wife died at his home within hours of one another.

Billy's calling as an evangelist was tested, he was offered movie contracts, even a million dollars a year, ( this is the 1950s, so that would be more like 6 million today using the Consumer Price Index).

The book pours you through history, not just Billy's experiences, but those of his friends. Billy had to face the growth pains of the nation, trying to serve both Catholics and Protestants in divided cities like New York and Boston. They discuss the civil rights movement where he was pressured to hold segregated meetings; he did not. I am not overly emotional, but I cried during many of the historical passages as I remember this nation's history, the author's tell the story well.

He was friend to Presidents and others in power including friends that fell including Nixon and evangelist Jim Bakker. He gave Nixon's Eulogy and conducted the memorial service for the Oklahoma City Bombing and the National Cathedral service for the 9/11.

The book does a great job of covering his management style; he built a great team and gave them a lot of freedom to act. If there is one place a bit more depth would have helped, it would have been more information on his health struggles, how did Billy Graham balance life and mission.

The bottom line, this is a good book whether or not you believe in the Christian faith. It deserves at least two readings, there are so many illustrations and nuggets it is impossible to get them all the first time through.

Editorial Review:

A behind- the- scenes analysis of twenty key principles of leadership, illustrated with stories and examples from the life of Billy Graham, whose fingerprints are on many leading Christian institutions and organizations, with transferable applications to people serving in a leadership role in business, educational, church, or parachurch settings.

Editorial Review:

These days Catholics and non-Catholics alike are asking, "How did the American Catholic priesthood go from an image of wise, strong men like Spencer Tracy in Boys Town and Bing Crosby in Going My Way, to an image of "pedophile priests"?" In the best-selling book Goodbye, Good Men, Catholic author and investigative reporter Michael S. Rose provides the shocking answer - an answer that you won't hear from the mainstream news media!

Now, by special arrangement with the publisher, St. Joseph Communications has produced an exclusive audio version of Goodbye, Good Men read by popular Catholic apologist and radio personality Tim Staples. A one-time seminarian that experienced first-hand many of the types of incidents recounted in this eye-opening book, Staples brings a real passion to the narration that greatly enhances the presentation of this challenging material.

The Root of the Problem

People around the nation and the world are still reeling over the recent revelations of serious clerical sexual abuse. In the introduction to his runaway bestseller, Michael Rose writes, "I researched and wrote this book over the past two years, interviewing more than 150 people, as a professional investigative journalist for the Catholic press, without any idea that the Boston debacle and its many ramifications would blow up just as Goodbye, Good Men was going to press. Although I did not set out to write a book about clerical sex abuse, what I discovered provides at least part of the answer to the burning question: How could this have happened?" In Goodbye, Good Men, you'll discover documented evidence that the root of this problem - both the cover-up and the sexual scandals themselves - reaches all the way back to the very place where genuine vocations to the priesthood are supposed to be nurtured and developed: the Catholic seminary. Rose powerfully relates h!

ow many men who support the teachings of the Church, especially in the area of sexual morality, are rejected or "written off" as "uncharitable" and "homophobic," while openly gay or dissenting seminarians are given preferential treatment and then receive Holy Orders. In short, the Catholic priesthood is being systematically "hijacked" in order to change the Catholic Church from within!

Spiritual Sickness

In 11 CDs or cassettes, Tim Staples reads Mr. Rose's powerful evidence that radical liberalism, like that found on many college campuses, has infiltrated the Catholic Church and tried to overthrow her traditional beliefs, standards, and disciplines - especially Church teachings on sexuality. Rose tells us how, in bringing the "sexual revolution" into the Church, liberals have welcomed - and even preferred - radicalized active homosexuals to orthodox seminarians in the name of "diversity" and "tolerance." But now that "tolerance" has been exposed for what it is - a toleration of criminal acts.

Much of the material presented in this book will come as a surprise - even a shock - to many of the Catholic faithful. But as Rose reveals, these problems are well known within the "inner circles" of the Catholic hierarchy, especially among bishops and priests. What Rose uncovers in his unflinching treatment of this highly sensitive material is, in his words, "a profound spiritual problem, a sickness of untold proportions" showing how the very institutions charged with inculcating Catholic theology and discipline have come to prefer gay priests to straight ones, pop psychology to religious devotion, and Playboy to the pope!

Warning: This set contains explicit material intended for mature listeners!

What You’ll Discover:

Why many qualified candidates for the priesthood have been turned away for political reasons over the past three decades

How, through the seminaries, liberals have brought a "moral meltdown" into the Catholic priesthood

Why dissenters from Catholic teaching - including teaching on homosexuality - have been rewarded

How gay sem

A great introduction to the present--and future--of theological schools 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The last twenty-five years have seen a remarkable explosion of literature on theological education. This brief, accessible volume is a great entry-point into this conversation and is itself a significant new contribution that will spark fresh thinking and action.

The book begins and ends by making a strong case for the future of theological schools--both that they should have a future and that they will. Aleshire makes this case by pointing to how their function of preparing theologically wise leaders for communities of faith is particularly crucial in a time of rapid multidimensional change when the
kind of wisdom schools can foster is at a premium. He then goes on to show that these schools--precisely as schools--have great capacities for imagining and effecting profound changes in their own life and work. In the three middle chapters Aleshire provides a short course on issues facing theological schools, reflecting concretely and practically on the current challenges and possibilities for their work in the arenas of learning, teaching, research, administration and governance.

What this adds up to is a orienting meditation on the biggest questions and issues currently facing every theological school and everyone who cares about them, whether faculty, students, administrators, board members, church leaders, or those who simply have a thirst for faith's wisdom.

Editorial Review:

Earthen Vessels is a thoughtful, conversational essay illuminating the broad contours of theological education today. Rather than using a historical or analytic approach to discuss theological education in North America, Daniel Aleshire uses what he terms "appreciative inquiry" to identify the strengths of theological schools at their best.

Editorial Review:

The journalist Jonathan Englert goes inside a seminary to follow five men who have left their careers and lives behind in pursuit of the priesthood.

There are now a record sixty-four million Catholics in the United States, yet the number of priests is plummeting so fast that hundreds of parishes nationwide are closing down. Against this turbulent backdrop, Englert charts the journey of five men toward the priesthood at a seminary that specializes in "second-career" priests -- men who come to their vocation later than their college years. We meet a divorced father and avid hunter from Wyoming, an ex-salesman and Marine with ADHD, a recently widowed father of four, a blind musician, and others. With wit and sometimes heartbreaking candor, they face the challenges of priestly life -- from the traditional hurdles of obedience and chastity to more modern travails, like the bad press let loose by recent sexual abuse scandals and the skepticism of their friends and families. For each man, these challenges are intensified by their past experiences as they sacrifice familiar comforts to answer their calling.

Englert is ideally qualified to write The Collar, both professionally, as a graduate of the Columbia School of Journalism, and spiritually, as a convert to Catholicism who has walked the tortuous path of faith. His empathy with the spiritual journeys of the men he portrays recalls The Cloister Walk. His deft, evenhanded unveiling of a compelling, little-observed culture will resonate with both the faithful and the merely curious.

An extradinarily intimate "outsider's" view of west Ireland 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This collection of 14 shorter pieces by Tim Robinson, mathematician, teacher, artist and cartographer, gives a portrait of the west of Ireland which is unrivalled in recent writing from that country. Its' integrating device, and central metaphor, is the map. A map, stripped bare, is a distillation of topographical knowledege about an area. Onto this rudimentary two-dimensional scaffolding layer after layer of detail can be added. These are the details of culture, of history, personal memory. Robinson navigates the process of regarding a landscape with the notion of the fractal -- the notion of self-similar structures at multiple levels of observation (in "A Connemara Fractal"). He enjoyably talks us through the technical details of making maps, and has some wonderful stories of his mathematical training. I will not attempt to summarize the various chapters but would urge all those interested in landscape, biography, Irish history, coastal walks, fractal theory, natural history archaeology, literary fiction, and "home" (and that, I suppose, includes just about everyone) to read this. In a time when many find themselves living at some distance from their homeplace this book shows how a fresh intimacy with new landscapes can enrich and invigorate. As an Irish emigrant I am both compelled to return to Ireland after reading this and yet am encouraged to persevere in understanding of my new homeplace in the United States. I have loaned this book to friends in Costa Rica, in the American Northwest, and here in Georgia. All have felt its power. It should stimulate the reader to get his larger works on the Aran Islands. Be warned however these books, the present one included, eccentric masterpieces, will make you want to crumble soil between your fingers, circum-navigate your local terrain, and fumble into the interstices of your jaded soul. Liam Heneghan (heneghan@sparc.ecology.uga.edu; Athens, GA)

Editorial Review:

This is the first of two volumes on travelling in Eire which encompasses a journey around the coast of Aran - a walk along the wild southern cliff-line of the Atlantic, including the western Brannock islets, followed by a return trip around the low-lying northern coast. It includes descriptions of the region's archaeology, botany, birdlife, history and folklore and an elucidation of the Irish place names.

Outstanding! 5 out of 5 stars.

As an agnostic --> athiest, I was intrigued by the question, "Why would anyone become a priest?" This book gives a brief glimpse into the possible answers, all of which are very personal and unique.

Inside the Vatican's "West Point" for new priests 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The North American College in Rome is the most prestigious seminary for future priests from the US. I expected the book would focus on the North American College as an organization, but rather it describes six new seminarians during the 1995-96 academic year, going into a great deal of detail about their backgrounds and their spiritual journeys while at the College.

It's as though the six came from central casting - the introverted Asian immigrant, the ex-fighter pilot, the homesick farm kid from the prairies, the high-living New Orleans lawyer, and a pair of identical twins. These are a conservative bunch, both in the sense of US politics as well as in terms of accepting traditional church doctrine. Most of them are constantly wrestling with their "calling" - essentially their turmoil over renouncing sex forever - and the endless pages devoted to their inner ruminations do get tedious after awhile. Despite its flaws, I found the book entertaining to read.

I was surprised that two of the six seminarians had ongoing romantic relationships back in the US. The saddest part was when one of the seminarians tells his girlfriend over the phone that it's over, while she genuinely thought his enrollment in seminary was a passing fling. Otherwise, there is nothing here remotely scandalous or shocking.

Editorial Review:

A top-gun pilot, a high-living lawyer, a farm boy, a Vietnamese refugee--and a set of Harvard-educated twins. They would form an interesting group in any setting, but in this moving chronicle of a year at the Vatican's North American College in Rome, they are the "New Men." These beginning seminarians at the "West Point for priests" are at the heart of this candid book, in which a prizewinning journalist takes us inside the Roman Catholic church--and reveals the stories and the struggles of six men as they grapple with all the hopes and doubts that come with this new life.

Helped me prepare for seminary academic workload 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Direct, easy to read and clearly focused, this book helped me prepare for a return to the academic workload of seminary 15+ years after grad school. Includes practical tips for study and organization that I use regularly now that I am in seminary. Another book that helped me prepare for the equally real spiritual and emotional demands of seminary was Virginia Samuel Cetuk's "What to Expect in Seminary: Theological Education As Spiritual Formation."

Has it been a while since your last academic writing experience? 4 out of 5 stars.

This reference is especially helpful for those who need help getting started with academic papers. If you need something to trigger topic ideas and development of themes for your papers, order this book.

Editorial Review:

Deborah Core offers practical guidance for beginning seminary students who feel overwhelmed and underprepared to write the number and quality of papers their courses require. The book begins with reflections on writing as a sacred action, then addresses such practical matters as choosing and researching a topic; outlining, drafting, and polishing a paper; and using the proper format for footnotes and bibliography. Also included are sample papers in MLA and Chicago styles and an overview of grammar and usage.

Editorial Review:

This book is a powerful collection of personal essays about the Savior. Each essay brings anecdotes and intriguing insights that strengthen and encourage all who read them. It conveys a sense of peace and calm that gently envelops its readers. Renowned scholar Deen Kemsley sets out to know Christ and experience his love in this sincere and personal book. Though the story is far from simple, his findings are clear: God is there, he hears your prayers, and he loves you. The book is unique in that prominent leaders from very different Christian denominations have all endorsed the book. For example, Glenn Beck of CNN indicates the book leads readers to the point where "they can almost see his face, and helps them feel the Savior's infinite love for them." Richard L. Bushman describes it as "gripping." Richard Mouw, the president of Fuller Theological Seminary, indicates the book is "impressive and moving." Publisher's Weekly states the book "has a deeply ecumenical tone… it's refreshing and quietly lovely." Rebecca Wire of Roundtable Reviews states, "This was a beautiful read."

FASCINATING INSTITUTIONAL HISTORY 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A history of an organizations is often boring--filled with facts and figures and just plain puff. This breaks all the rules. It goes far beyond Fuller Theological Seminary, to catch the trade winds of the broader evangelical/fundamentalist movement. And, it's anything but a puff piece. It captures wonderful behind-the-scenes stories and scandals that no one before dared tell. It's a book that will never be dated---though Fuller Seminary continues on in the twenty-first century stronger than ever. I hope Marsden will one day put his pen to the task of historical analysis of Calvin Theological Seminary, including the pain and controversy I endured ("My Calvin Seminary Story"). Perhaps his ties to the Christian Reformed Church are too close for him to ever do that.

Editorial Review:

A sequel and companion to the author's widely aclaimed Fundamentalism and American Culture, this book uses the history of Fuller Theological Seminary as a lens through which to focus an examination of the broader story of evangelicalism and fundamentalism since the 1940s.

Very helpful process 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Helping others (layfolks, seminarians, etc) reflect theologically on the ordinary events of life can be a daunting challenge. This book offers a very clear process for helping groups focus their conversation. I have been using this book with Divinity students for several years and find it really practical and successful. It offers a way to open up the conversation and get quickly to a deeper level.

Good Case Study Discussion for Ministry Workers 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Mahan's book is a basic discussion and outline for ministry workers trying to discuss case studies in their work. Mahan gives a good step by step process for those presenting, facilitating, and critiquing each other in ministry case studies.

I used this book and the process in a doctoral level class and we found it to be helpful--more helpful than discussing our various cases.

Editorial Review:

Ministry is enriched when its practitioners are involved in a serious process of peer reflection on their ministry. Case study, the method advocate here, is one significant way for such reflection to take place. Readers will learn techniques for writing case studies and how to use imagination ad analogy to provoke theological reflection.
