Editorial Review:

As though blowing oxygen upon the dying embers of a fire, pastor Jim Cymbala revived a broken-down church in a rough-shod inner-city neighborhood through Christian faith. Twenty-five years ago, the Brooklyn Tabernacle could barely draw 26 people to a Sunday service. Nowadays the congregation is 6,000 strong--filled with converted prostitutes, pimps, drug addicts, and homeless people, as well as yuppies and wholesome families. Although he's quick to give God credit for this miraculous success story, Cymbala admits that there may be a few human decisions that led to this Christian triumph. Most significantly, he made sure his church community embraced everyone, from all walks of life--no matter how distasteful or foreign. "Christians often hesitate to reach out to those who are different," according to Cymbala. "They want God to clean the fish before they catch them. If someone's gold ring is attached to an unusual body part, if the person doesn't smell the best or the skin color is not the same, Christians tend to hesitate." Thus, Cymbala encouraged his congregation to adopt the very same tolerant and accepting attitude as their God does. The results? Let's just say a church thrives in Brooklyn. Accomplished cowriter Dean Merrill helps this tender true story stay satisfying and highly readable. --Gail Hudson

Finally, I have a grasp of world history! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I am so glad I found these tapes. Diana Waring gives an overview of the major players and events of history, from Creation to the French Revolution, and has shown how they are linked together. Diana tells of history from the Judeo-Christian perspective, which I so appreciate. Often a secular explanation of history leaves out key people, and explanations of events. I also appreciate that she put her information on audio tape, for I have listened to them over and over. I recommend this for anyone who wants to put the pieces of history into a flowing "story".

Editorial Review:

With an enthusiastic, storyteller's style, Diana whisks you through several millennia of history in a chronological flow of history's most important world-changing cultures, events, and leaders from Biblical Creation to the French Revolution. You will hear a Christian perspective on Creation, early man, the rise of civilizations, the life of the Messiah, the early Church, famous conquerors, leaders, explorers, and influential events on four one-hour audio tapes. See also companion unit study guides: Ancient Civilizations & the Bible, Romans, Reformers, Revolutionaries, True Tales from the Times of Ancient Civilization & the Bible, True Tales from the Times of Romans, Reformers, Revolutionaries, and the Ancient Civilizations & the Bible Elementary Activity Book for younger elementary students.

My oh my oh my, this as is the rest of this series is beautiful book. It paints a realistic view of what could happen in a world lost. I actually saw and heard the events and characters. This book fits into the storyline with ease and leaves one screaming for. This is part of a tale that will make you want to go back to the beging of the series if you missed any of it. However it can also sevive as a stand alone story. I recomend this book for any avid reader. It's the kind of book you may find hard to put down once you start reading it. You may also find yourself reading it again and again.

Editorial Review:

In book #11 of the Left Behind series, the scattered Tribulation Force is drawn inexorably toward the Middle East, as are all the armies of the world, when all of human history culminates in the battle of the ages. During the last year of the Great Tribulation, safe houses are no longer safe and the cast of characters dramatically changes. By the time of the war of the great day of God the Almighty, the globe has become a powder keg of danger.

Who will be left standing when the battle leaves the Tribulation Force on the brink of the end of time and the Glorious Appearing?

Worst Latin purchase I have ever made! These tapes were not in the least bit helpful and seemed to drag on and on.

Editorial Review:

Following the guidance of W. Sidney Allen, the recognized authority on Latin pronunciation, these two cassettes present authentic Latin speech, giving a taste of how everyday Latin might have sounded. The recorded extracts are spread over two cassettes and include many of the cartoon captions, Responde Latine questions, Fabellae, dramatized dialogues, and other short passages of narrative prose and verse that are found in Parts 1-3 of the course. For the Oxford Latin Reader there are longer extracts of prose and verse covering the principal authors of the Golden Age including Cicero, Catullus, Virgil, and Ovid. A full index of extracts is provided on the cassette inlay cards.

A Bible reference for intelligent people 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Dubbed by Times magazine as one of America's seven best preache's, Harvard professor of Christian Morals and pastor of the school's University's Memorial Church, Rev. Gomes' latest work, The Good Book, is a bestseller selection of the Book of the Month and Quality Paperback Book Clubs. This well-written, compassionate and thoughtful book is written for the general public to entice them back to reading the Bible through new eyes, paying more attention to its moral principles than the social practices.

Rev. Gomes asserts that Biblical literacy in this country is extremely rare. Among a thousand people polled in the US by the Barna Research Group 10 percent said that Joan of Arc was Noah's wife, 16 percent were convinced that the New Testament contained the Gospel of Thomas, and 38 percent believed the Old and New Testaments were written a few years after Jesus' death. Gomes observed humorously that, "These replies are worthy of the old Sunday school howler in which the epistles are defined as the wives of the apostles." (p. 5)

The Good Book is divided into three sections: "Opening the Bible" wherein Gomes warns against three dangerous and common temptations on Biblical interpretation: (1) bibliolatry, "the worship of the Bible, making it an object of veneration and ascribing to it the glory belonging to God," (2) literalism, "the worship of the text, in which the letter is given inappropriate superiority over the spirit, and (3) culturalism, "the worship of the culture in which the Bible is forced to conform to the norms of the prevailing culture." Section two, "The Use and Abuse of the Bible" is a historical account of how the Bible has been used to oppress certain groups: Jews, women, homosexuals, and minorities. Section three, "The True and Lively Word" explores what the Bible has to say about the good life, evil, suffering, temptation, wealth, science, mystery and joy."

In an interview about the book with the Harvard University Gazette, Gomes commented "I would say, one, the Bible is accessible. Two, it takes work. The Bible is not a Reader's Digest sort of enterprise, and you can't simply open it up, as 90 percent of religious people do, and just hope that inspiration oozes out of the page or that you can just figure it out because you're a reasonably intelligent person. But, three, the work pays off because the Bible has to do with issues, both great and small, that are as relevant as tomorrow's headlines."

The Good Book is filled with scholarship and imagination, with wit and wisdom sufficient to serve as a road map back to and through the Bible. I join with the former Archbishop of Canterbury, The Right Reverend Lord Runcie, who hailed The Book as "easily the best contemporary book on the Bible for thoughtful people."

Editorial Review:

Biblical studies have historically been consigned to theological schools and church groups. In The Good Book, Peter Gomes, pastor of Harvard University's Memorial Church and a professor of theology, has written a vivid, common sense and wise analysis of what the Bible means for us today. As an African American gay man, Gomes is interested in re-viewing the biblical passages on sexuality and race, but The Good Book is much more than a revisionist look at controversial biblical passages. Gomes is interested in rediscovering how the Bible can find a place in our emotional and political lives, as well as in our religious beliefs.

Editorial Review:

Who among us has never wondered if there might not really be a tempter sitting on our shoulders or dogging our steps? C.S. Lewis dispels all doubts. In The Screwtape Letters, one of his bestselling works, we are made privy to the instructional correspondence between a senior demon, Screwtape, and his wannabe diabolical nephew Wormwood. As mentor, Screwtape coaches Wormwood in the finer points, tempting his "patient" away from God.

Each letter is a masterpiece of reverse theology, giving the reader an inside look at the thinking and means of temptation. Tempters, according to Lewis, have two motives: the first is fear of punishment, the second a hunger to consume or dominate other beings. On the other hand, the goal of the Creator is to woo us unto himself or to transform us through his love from "tools into servants and servants into sons." It is the dichotomy between being consumed and subsumed completely into another's identity or being liberated to be utterly ourselves that Lewis explores with his razor-sharp insight and wit.

The most brilliant feature of The Screwtape Letters may be likening hell to a bureaucracy in which "everyone is perpetually concerned about his own dignity and advancement, where everyone has a grievance, and where everyone lives the deadly serious passions of envy, self-importance, and resentment." We all understand bureaucracies, be it the Department of Motor Vehicles, the IRS, or one of our own making. So we each understand the temptations that slowly lure us into hell. If you've never read Lewis, The Screwtape Letters is a great place to start. And if you know Lewis, but haven't read this, you've missed one of his core writings. --Patricia Klein

Pathetic scholarship 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 17 people found this review helpful.

The utter, seemingly perpetual redundancy of this book is enough to make me nauseous. The fact that she can't explicate a single religious or philosophical subject without concluding that its proponents originally saw it merely as some "expression of his or her inner notions of God and self" makes this waste of perfectly good paper virtually unreadable. But that she completely destroys Plato (!!!) for the sake of her own little "inner self" fancy is enough to convince me that she has no business even talking about philosophical, historical, or theological subjects. I read this book with an open mind, thinking it would be a postmodern revisionistic history, but history nonetheless. No. It's not. It's her own pathetic, unrefined reflection posing as a well researched deconstructive analysis. If you're a religious skeptic or atheist, you should be let down by this book. If you're a philosopher you should feel extremely irritated. If you're a historian, you should raise an eyebrow and scratch your head. If you're a theologian, you should say "WHAT?!". If you're a mystic, you should be really confused. If you're a Christian thinking that this book will undo your faith...you probably don't even know what you believe or why you believe it.

Editorial Review:

Armstrong, a British journalist and former nun, guides us along one of the most elusive and fascinating quests of all time--the search for God. Like all beloved historians, Armstrong entertains us with deft storytelling, astounding research, and makes us feel a greater appreciation for the present because we better understand our past. Be warned: A History of God is not a tidy linear history. Rather, we learn that the definition of God is constantly being repeated, altered, discarded, and resurrected through the ages, responding to its followers' practical concerns rather than to mystical mandates. Armstrong also shows us how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have overlapped and influenced one another, gently challenging the secularist history of each of these religions. --Gail Hudson

"The truth will set you free" 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read The Bondage Breaker a few months ago, and I picked up this book after reading it. However, I decided to put it away and read it later on, in a time where I'd need some spiritual uplifting, revelation and/or affirmation. Well, that time was now, and after going through a rather difficult time, this book called out to me in the worst possible time in my life. Neil T. Anderson does with this book what he does with The Bondage Breaker, only that he covers all of the bases here to help you realize the powerful of your identity in Christ. The chapters are all very insightful and spot-on, and I felt as though this book had been written for me. The chapters centered on fear of rejection, freeing oneself from emotional and deep-rooted bondage, and letting our personal goals define our lives are the most important ones to me because they opened my eyes to so many things. I won't go into details about personal matters, but this is a wonderful book. It's not a substitute to the Bible, but rather it is a wonderful guide to understanding the scriptures better. If you're a Christian in need of spiritual growth, I recommend this wonderful book as well as The Bondage Breaker. I look forward to reading all of the follow-ups in this series.

If there is a fault in this book, it's that it is a little repetitious at times, because I had some of this same stuff in The Bondage Breaker. Other than that, I find no fault in this book. Anderson is a wonderful person, and God has used him to do extraordinary things. I hope I can do a fourth of what Mr. Anderson has done. I liked the tidbits about his life and family, when he used himself and his family as examples. A great, uplifting read. If you're a Christian in need of spiritual growth, I recommend this wonderful book as well as The Bondage Breaker. I look forward to reading all of the follow-ups in this series.

Editorial Review:

Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.

How do you discover your spouse's - and your own - love language? Chapman's short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.

Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like -hoping the feelings of affection will follow later- a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal & Paperback Book Set.

I love Patsy Clairmont books. They inspire, encourage me and make me laugh too! This book has a lot of spiritual insight and I really love it.

Editorial Review:

For some, the world is a painful and fractured place-a place where their spirits have been tainted by tragedy, intimidation, and the loss of love or loved ones. In this book, popular Christian Bookseller Association (CBA) author Patsy Clairmont addresses this pain and suggests that those in search of healing turn to the book of Nehemiah for insight, instruction, and encouragement. Through Nehemiah, the reader will learn how to guard her heart and how to open the doors when trust is required; how to live with a servant's heart and how to overcome the fear of subjection; and when to work and when to pray. Using scripture and stories from her own experiences as well as those of others, Patsy illustrates how hearts and dreams can be rejuventated and rebuilt and that the trip through the valley can lead to the mountaintop.
