Editorial Review:

What do an ex-con, a former addict, a real estate broker, a college student, and a married mother of two have in common?

Nothing, or so I thought. Who would have imagined that God would make a group as mismatched as ours the closet of friends?

I almost didn’t even go to the Chicago Women’s Conference – after all, being thrown together with five hundred strangers wasn’t exactly my "comfort zone." But I would be rooming with my boss, Avis, and I hoped that maybe I might make a friend or two.

When Avis and I were assigned to a prayer group of twelve women at the conference, I wasn’t sure what to think. There was Flo, an outspoken ex-drug addict; Ruth, a Messianic Jew who could smother-mother you to death; and Yo-Yo, an ex-con who wasn’t even a Christian! Not to mention women from Jamaica, Honduras, South Africa – practically a mini-United Nations. We certainly didn’t have much in common.

But something happened that weekend to make us realize we had to hang together. So "the Yada Yada Prayer Group" decided to keep praying for each other via e-mail. That worked for a while, but our personal struggles and requests soon got too intense for cyberspace, so we decided to meet together every other Sunday night.

Talk about a rock tumbler!–knocking off each other’s rough edges, learning to laugh and cry along the way. But when I faced the biggest crisis of my life, God used my newfound girlfriends to help teach me – Jodi Baxter, longtime Christian "good girl" – what it means to be just a sinner saved by grace.

I was excited to read the book because it was recommended by a good friend of mine. With the title of Intimate Issues - I was expecting more depth. This was a lot of superficial information that really didn't help much. I did give it to my soon-to-be-sister-in-law.

Leota's Garden
I absolutely loved this book! I can't wait to read other books by Francine Rivers now. It was just the neatest portraial of a granddaughter's love for her grandmother.

Sick twist 3 out of 5 stars.

I was glued to this book for the two days it took me to read it so
you can imagine my utter shock and frustration when the book took a
twist turn at the end concerning Leota and a medical technician.
It was so unnecessary. It would have been nice for Leota and her daughter to reconcile or at LEAST die a normal peaceful death. I was very disappointed but overall enjoyed the dialogue throughout the book.

The Halloweeen "skit" was too drawn out for my liking but Leota was such dear I read to find out more and more about her sweet self. Other parts of the book caused me to raise my eybrows... How "predicatble" that the black kids would have an absentee father who was probably "in jail." There were enough odd placed comments concerning race to make me squirm in my seat but I suppose that was the author's intent. Bottom line is this was a good book but I probably wouldn't recommend it. The "feud" between mother (Leota) and daughter (Nora) seemed entirely overblown. And Annie was too perfect to be true. It was a pleasant book and this is Just my two cents.

Editorial Review:

Award-winning author Francine Rivers opens a world full of vibrant characters with a powerful story of hope. In this stunning novel, Francine explores the new life that love can bring to a decaying garden of broken relationships. Through the lives of 84-year-old Leota, her granddaughter, and a college student with all the answers, Francine leads readers to ponder the value of life and truth in a way that only she can.

Approved 5 out of 5 stars.

Three Bibles, The Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition, The Jerusalem Bible (1966) and the New American Bible (1970 edition) are approved by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Holy See for use in U.S. Catholic Churches. The New American Bible is the work of Catholic scholars and some non-catholic scholars in rendering the ancient text.
The introductions to each chapter are very informative and there are many footnotes explaining the text. Any controversy concerning the various editions of the New American Bible are a subject to be resolved by the Holy See and the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.

While it is disappointing that there still has to be a "Cathilic Version" of the Bible, it is encouraging that Bible scholars of all Christian denominations are increasingly working from original languages rather than only Latin or Greek (e.g. the Vulgate)translations. This edition, especially because of the expanded footnotes, gives everyone a greater understanding of the inspired Word of God.

Editorial Review:

Fundamentalism has emerged as one of the most powerful forces at work in the world. However, it remains incomprehensible to large numbers of people. In The Battle for God, Karen Armstrong brilliantly and sympathetically shows us how and why fundamentalist groups came into existence and what they yearn to accomplish.

Focusing on Protestant, Jewish, and Muslim fundamentalism, she examines the ways in which these movements, while not monolithic, have each sprung from a dread of modernity -- and often in response to assault, sometimes unwitting, sometimes intentional, by the mainstream society.

Armstrong sees the fundamentalist groups as complex, innovative and modern -- rather than throwbacks to the past -- but contends that they have failed in religious terms. Maintaining that fundamentalism often exists in symbiotic relationship with an aggressive modernity, each urging the other on to greater, excess, she suggests compassion as a way to defuse what is now" an intensifying conflict.

Good job Amazon...Good book, but... 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am happy that this book has inspired some folks to be better people. I just can't agree with some of what the author is suggesting in his book.

A few things...

It sounds like to me he believes in predestination. I don't...I believe that man has the free will to make his or her own good and bad decisions in his life. God gave that to us. If everything is predestinend why bother reading or listening to this book anyway??? Making my own decisions have PREDESTINED my life. I don't think that God made those decisions for me.

The author suggests that God causes thing to happen in our lives...that he uses pain and problems to serve as wake up calls. I can't blame this on God...it's a human condition for Pete's sake! Are the destitute people in Africa really bad people? NO...the circumstances are really bad. And still born babies...abortions...child abuse...wife beating...murder...are those things that God causes? Nope...we're just human.

And how about what you do with the things that God gives us? Do we give it all up to live like Jesus? That's pretty much what he suggests is part of God's plan for us. He may be right! There are places in the Bible that suggest just that. My main concern is that he mentions that saving for retirement is not in God's plan. I may be going to that bad place for it but I'm saving for my retiremnent. My circumstances allow it. I figure what I do with it after I have to stop working is the real question...I hope!

Please don't allow my critique to affect your decision to read the book or listen to this audio version. There are plenty of good things in there that can help you live a good life. There is also more content in there that I don't necessarily agree with but it's not really worth mentioning here.

Buy it and you decide...

Editorial Review:

At first glance, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Bible seems irreverent at best, but as the saying goes, "Judge not ... a book by its cover." This little addition to the Complete Idiot’s series tackles one of the most intimidating and misrepresented subjects of the past 2,000 years and succeeds in producing a competent and thorough guide to the world's all-time bestseller. Jim Bell and Stan Campbell’s success is largely due to their humorous and conversational writing style. Their treatment of the Old Testament in particular is both an intriguing and hilarious ride through the drama of biblical history. With chapter headings like "Abraham: the not-so-accidental tourist" and "Tell-a-Vision Personalities (Isaiah through Malachi)," the authors provide a memorable picture of the goings-on in the first 39 books of the Bible. The Abraham chapter includes, among other noteworthy (and entertaining) facts, how Israel became the Hebrew "Promised Land," the origin of the phrase "fire and brimstone," and some of the less illustrious deeds of this "man of faith."

Shameful 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is a shameful end to an otherwise wonderful series of women in the lineage of Christ. It is poorly researched, and extremely disrespectful of the Mother of God. Think about it - Mary is the vessel through which God was made man and came to earth. Doesn't it make sense that the vessel would be as perfect as is humanly possibly? I was shocked and offended by this book. What a shame.

Disgusting. 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I'm surprised this book has so many positive reviews!

This is a good book about Joseph, Mary's husband. The picture Francine Rivers paints of Mary the mother of Jesus is nothing short of bitter and dishonest-- not Scriptural at all (one of the greatest scenes of the Bible with Mary-- her visit to Elizabeth where Mary sings, "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior..." is LEFT out!). It's a gross oversight that gives away Ms. Rivers' struggles with the person of Mary... it seems like she tries to make her Mary "less Catholic" by making her into a terrible person. I can understand that Ms. Rivers wants to make Mary 'more human' to her readers... but Ms. Rivers forgets that sin makes us LESS human, not moreso. Adam and Eve were more themselves in the Garden of Eden than after they were cast out.

Even though this is a work of fiction, I still think that, at best, it's a dishonest account of the mother of Jesus--an attempt to erase the picture the Catholic Church has painted instead of an honest openness about Mary's life as revealed in segments of Scripture and early Christian writings.

I was highly disappointed. It was a struggle to even finish the book.

Editorial Review:

Galileo's Daughter is the story of the relationship between the great Italian scientist Galileo and his daughter, by the author of Longitude. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was the foremost scientist of his day. His inventions and discoveries were heralded around the world. His telescopes allowed him to reveal a new reality in the heavens and to defend the astounding proposition that the earth actually moves around the Sun. For this belief was tried for heresy and threatened with torture. Galileo is brought to life here as never before -- a man boldly compelled to explain the truths he discovered, human in his frailties and faith, devoted to his family and, especially, to his daughter. Since there could be no hope of marriage for his illegitimate daughter Galileo placed her, aged thirteen, in the convent of San Mateo in Arcetri. She was perhaps her father's equal in brilliance, industry and sensibility, and she proved to be his greatest source of strength through his most difficult years. Dava Sobel reveals the short life of Sister Marie Celeste through the 120 letters the nun wrote to her father from 1623 to her death ten years later from exposure, malnutrition and a broken heart at the age of 33 years. The letters reveal a loving relationship, a mutual passion for science and a unique insight into early modern history, all woven into Dava Sobel's compelling narrative. Galileo's Daughter tells the story of the most dramatic collision in history between science and religion. Sobel illuminates an entire era, when one man fought to reconcile the Heaven he revered as a good Catholic with the heavens he revealed through his telescope. Galileo's Daughter is a rich and unforgettable story.

This can really hurt a family, REALLY! 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is scary bad. Our small group-study at church is going through this, and it's making me sick. The men's-group is rallying around this like it's a miracle answer to all of their family issues, but it's just smoke. The author is NOT teaching relationship skills, but just rules for a plutocratic relationship. There's so much more to being a family leader then just having testicles and a bible.

Point Man By Steve Farrar. 5 out of 5 stars.

Point Man is a must read for ALL men. It is timeless and to the point. It is a book on not just being a leader, but being a leader of the family. We need to have more men be accountable for their actions. This book will lead you in your roles as a husband and father. It will help you understand just how important you are to the family. Real men read this book.

Dr. Steve Ferrar has a gift that I have never seen any man have before. He can tell us men what makes us tick and why we do things in a way that makes it so easy to understand. This guy is the real deal and he has had his own struggles. That says to me that he has credibility and can relate to the things that I am facing.

If you ever get a chance to hear Steve speak, make sure you don't miss it. He speaks frequently in Frisco, Texas, not far from Dallas.

Editorial Review:

This classic bestseller encourages and equips Christian men to lead their families successfully through hazards and ambushes. Topics include a father's influence, maintaining purity, and husband and wife teamwork.
