These books are not required reading! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As have many of the reviewers here, I've read all of Jan Karon's books. I find them to be comforting, soothing, safe cozy books to read. Sometimes, when life is truly stressful and anxious, that is exactly what I want. I draw a hot bath and read about a kind gentle world where nothing bad ever happens without a solution. People die when they're old, people give up their addictions, people love each other.

So I am pretty mystified by readers who gave these books one star and commented that it was a relief to put these last books down. No one is forcing anyone to read these books! There won't be a test in the morning.

I am not episcopalian, I am in fact an atheist. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy the comfort of these books. If you are so narrow that you buy these books and expect them to be something completely contrary to what they claim to be, what they are designed to be, then whose fault is that? Certainly not Jan Karon's, who it seems to me has been extraordinarily creative and successful at creating this little fantasy world for quiet comforting retreats.

I can't even believe that reviewers here complain for a lack of realism! You are reading these books for realism? You are upset that a book about an episcopal priest has too much prayer in it? You believe that solutions to these problems are too facile? Come on! That is what these books are supposed to be! When I read a Jan karon book, I am hoping for the same kind of escapism that I get from reading a PG Wodehouse book. It has nothing to do with reality. It has everything to do with jsut enjoying the read.

I'd recommend this one highly. I didn't think this last installment was disappointing. I also don't think it will be the last Mitford book. It will probably be the last Father Tim Mitford book, but I suspect that Hope Winchester and her new husband will take the reins. It would allow Jan Karon to write as a woman, and as a woman who spends alot of time in bookstores!

I personally am looking forward to it!

Editorial Review:

It’s never too late.

Father Tim Kavanagh has been asked to “come up higher” more than once. But he’s never been asked to do the impossible—until now. The retired Episcopal priest takes on the revival of a mountain church that’s been closed for forty years. Meanwhile, in Mitford, he’s sent on a hunt for hidden treasure, and two beloved friends are called to come up higher. As Father Tim finds, there are still plenty of heartfelt surprises, dear friends old and new, and the most important lesson of all: It’s never too late.

A little dated in the presentation, but not the content. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I found myself a bit distracted by the lack of specific references as to who the annecdotes were about. A lot of "a certain high ranking executive in an important industry, in a major US city..." These days we expect to be told which executive in which industry and and which in which city. Maybe we have all gotten a bit more skeptical about sources in the Internet age.
But that quibble asside, I have been making a concious effort to put Dr. Peale's ideas into practice, and found them very helpful. In another 50 years the presentation will seem more dated yet, but I am sure the ideas will be no less important. I am glad I bought the book.
As as has been noted in many other reviews, this book is about living a rich, full, happy life in a Christian framework. If that's not what you are looking for, keep looking!

Editorial Review:

Peale gives a special introduction for those plagued by worry, doubt, defeatism or grief. Over seven million copies of the book version have been sold to enrich people's lives for more than a generation.

Editorial Review:

On June 1, 1956, the New York Times broke a story that captured the imagination of the world. Another Dead Sea Scroll had been found, unlike any before it, describing unimaginable treasures worth untold billions buried in the hills east of Jerusalem and under the Holy City itself.

In the years that followed, scholars came to believe that THE COPPER SCROLL COULD BE HISTORY'S GREATEST TREASURE MAP, one that could not only lead to the treasures but pave the way to the building of the Third Jewish Temple.

But the scroll's code has never been broken, and experts from all sides warn that any effort by Israel to rebuild their Temple in Jerusalem would unleash a war of biblical proportions.

Now, exactly fifty years after the Copper Scroll was unveiled, New York Times bestselling author Joel C. Rosenberg takes you on his most exciting and heart-pounding ride yet.

SADDAM HUSSEIN IS GONE.
YASSER ARAFAT IS DEAD.
A NEW IRAQ IS RISING.

Now White House advisors Jon Bennett and Erin McCoy find themselves facing a terrifying new threat triggered by an ancient mystery.

The Message by Eugene Peterson(the Bible in Contemporary language) 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

For the first time I could understand pretty much every line and verse I come across in Eugene Peterson's Bible in contemporary language.

The paraphrasing really made an huge difference to help clarify things for me!

Handy and easier to use 5 out of 5 stars.

I really like this little reference. The size is just right and the text is large enough to be easy to read without squinting. Having the New testament, Psalms and Proverbs together in one small portable reference is especially useful.

I enjoy the freshness of the Message. It gives one another angle to view scripture and often gives surprising insight into difficult passages. Finally, I really enjoy the insight the book introductions provide as they are so right on. Well done NavPress, well done!

Editorial Review:

THE MESSAGE is a presentation of the Word of God crafted for a modern age. REMIX is produced by Charlie Peacock, and includes an original song by him called 'The Message'. Read by today's leading CCM artists, including Rebecca St. James, Steven Curtis Chapman, tobyMac, Mac Powell (of Third Day), Mark Stuart (of Audio Adrenaline), Bart Millard (of MercyMe), Janna Long of Avalon, Dan Haseltine (of Jars of Clay), Melissa Brock (of Superchick), and Danielle Young (of Caedmon's Call).

A must have for parents with boys! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

For every parent with boys, this book is a must read! Dr. James Dobson brilliantly discusses the challenges boys face in this world and how we as parents should deal with and handle our boys. The future of our young men is so important, and Dr. James Dobson educates the reader on how to help grow our boys into strong, respectful, spiritual men.

Editorial Review:

2002 Gold Medallion Award winner!

With so much confusion about the role of men in our society, it's no wonder so many parents and teachers are at a loss about how to bring up boys. Our culture has vilified masculinity and, as a result, boys are suffering. Parents, teachers, and others involved in shaping the character of boys have many questions. In Bringing Up Boys, Dr. James Dobson, America's most trusted authority on family issues, tackles these questions and offers advice and encouragement based on a firm foundation of biblical principles. Bringing Up Boys--a must-read book for parents, teachers, social workers, youth leaders, counselors--anyone involved in the challenge of turning boys into good men.

The audio book is read by Wayne Shepard and punctuated by original music.

A Christian's Review of the Reviews 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was thinking of getting this book so I did what I always do, I went straight to the 1 star reviews. In reading those, I've decided I DEFINITELY won't waste my money on this book, so thanks for that. But in reading the reviews I was reminded by something I was told by a guy who left seminary school. He was a gay bartender and worked at the restaurant next door. A group of my co-workers and I went to the bar and naturally, a lively convo kicked up and the topic came up. We asked why he left seminary school, he was 'out' when he decided he wanted to go, so it wasn't anything about him being a homosexual that made him leave. He said that he realized that there was no point in him being there because the people who are gonna get it, will and the people who aren't going to get it will NEVER get it, no matter what you say or do. I'm sharing this because I think it needs to be put out there. If you're waiting for SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE about FAITH, you've already set yourself up for failure. It's faith! Faith is something you have when there is no reason to, that's why it's faith. If you're only willing to believe in Christ because you don't have a choice, there's evidence of his resurrection that irrefutable, you're not believing in Christ, you're believing in the scientific method. I have issues with the Bible and the bloody history of my faith but I still believe in the message and live my life accordingly. I don't try to sell people on Christianity, I figure my light will attract those it's meant to attract. I hope this makes sense.

Editorial Review:

This eagerly anticipated audio sequel to Lee Strobel’s best-selling The Case for Christ finds the author investigating the nettlesome issues and doubts of  the heart that threaten faith. Eight major topics are addressed including doubt, the problem of pain, and the existence of evil.  Read by Lee Strobel.

Enjoyable read 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was good for me, with my little experience in leadership. He keeps the concepts very easy to understand. He adds tons of examples and real life stories throughout the book. I enjoyed having examples, because it made the concepts he was discussing make more sense. I would recommend this to anyone in early leadership.

Editorial Review:

In this repackaged bestseller John Maxwell examines the differences between leadership styles, outlines principles for inspiring, motivating, and influencing others. These principles can be used in any organization to foster integrity and self-discipline and bring a positive change.

Developing the Leader Within You also allows readers to examine how to be effective in the highest calling of leadership by understanding the five characteristics that set "leader managers" apart from "run-of-the-mill managers."

In this John Maxwell classic, he shows readers how to develop the vision, value, influence, and motivation required of successful leaders.

Aside from the Bible, this is the best book I have ever read. This is a life-changing book about a life-changing subject. I find Philip Yancey to be a tremendous communicator. Since reading this book, I have bought and given away as gifts at least 7 copies of this book.

secret to happyness 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just read the first chapters but this book has really touched me inside. The gospel is not a story about how to go to heaven or how to avoid hell. The gospel is the most beautiful love story ever told, about how God, being God, denied himself everything for our sake. And now, being totally acepted in Him, we are not left with the rest of our time on Earth to only daydream about heaven, but to enjoy the privilege and happyness of sharing God's love and grace with one another in this world. God does not want us to pay Him something back, He has everything He needs, He want us living close to Him, enjoying His company, His love, His grace, happy to be with Him and being a channel of His love and grace to the people around us.

Editorial Review:

Taken from the author’s Gold Medallion Award-winning book, this abridged audio cassette edition is an insightful exploration of grace, the most powerful force in the universe and our only hope for love and forgiveness. Read by Philip Yancey. Two abridged audio cassettes.

However, I purchased the book to be sent to someone else, and though the delivery confirmation indicated it was delivered, the book actually wasn't delivered. So the person I sent the book to, never received it. Amazon isjust now sendilng out a new book. I'm waiting to see if it arrives.

This book will change your life 5 out of 5 stars.

Dr. Cloud discusses some intense topics in Changes that Heal. If you have trouble setting boundaries with people, or if you didn't even know that you are supposed to be setting boundaries with people then read this! It is not an easy read. I think I would typically read each page a couple of times to understand it fully, but it was definitely worth it. My in-laws keep several copies of this book on hand to give to friends and family because it has been so helpful to our family. If you have never experienced true freedom in your relationships and you would like to, then read this book!

Editorial Review:

The author focuses on four developmental tasks--bonding to others, separating from others, integrating good and bad in our lives, and taking charge of our lives--that all of us must accomplish to heal our inner pain and to enable us to function and grow emotionally. Read by Dick Fredricks.

impossible 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 8 people found this review helpful.

There is something repellant, even repulsive, about the religious mind. We cannot escape the world, however much we dislike it: it is a violent, often ugly place, dominated by the stupid; and however far we flee from it, these unpleasantries inevitably find us out, we cannot run far enough or fast enough. Show me your attachment to the beautiful and the good, indeed, show me your love of peace, and I will show you beauty adulterated and good compromised; and I will expose your peace as a forgery that hides your hatred of life. The religious mind, when it perceives this contradictory and chaotic quality of existence, sees in it an opportunity to perform a trick of ethical magic. If one is good, if one is clarified, if one is just in every action, if one will only turn the other cheek, behold, nothing will ever die, pain will cease, and the horrible will be rectified. Alas, good friends, the truth is quite otherwise: he who turns his cheek is beaten and crucified. And he who cries for justice, will weep in earnest by way of reckoning.

It is the weak who fear the strong; it is the good who inspire in others evil. In this world one either eats or is eaten, and no amount of sympathy, pity, or compassion will adulterate the predatory core of being itself. And books like this are authored by charlatains, who try to take away your fear by denying the necessity for it.

I give you two instances of this religious magic: Ms. Chodron informs us of an elderly couple living in a gated community in Florida. They fear the violence resulting from poverty of circumstances surrounding them. Ms. Chodron implies that it is the elders who are at fault for the fear they experience, that they must open their arms to the terror around them, that they must become as nothing and embrace the thing they fear. What do they fear? Besides murder? The loss of their culture. The compromise of the quality of their life. Ms. Chodron does not seem to comprehend that pistol shots are exchanged on the freeways in southern Florida; that interracial violence and cross-cultural warfare has come to visit us in our homeland, and that southern Florida is one of its battlegrounds--and even if she does, she has no answer for it, except to say, we should submit to it. Peace is submission. I say that piety like this is suicide: piety does not, can not, will not, nor ever shall bring us peace, except the peace of the grave.

She likewise quotes with great approval Einstein, who faults us all for our consciousness--which, he describes as cut off, selfish, lacking understanding, and unwilling to embrace "the whole of nature". Einstein, good folk, was paid handsomely for his consultations on the development of Atomic Weapons. So much for embracing the "whole of nature" and its fundamental goodness. Saint Einstein, and his good work, the annihilation of millions, and the development of weapons with which his employers can further dominate our lives. So much for Ms. Chodron. She is either stupid or malicious, neither of which is very good for you.
