Editorial Review:

This booklet is a brief introduction, with an academic approach, to the most accurate and updated research and discoveries made on the Dead Sea Scrolls, from a Catholic perspective. First, it offers an historical presentation of the Dead Sea Scrolls discovery, the date of the Scrolls, the material of the Scrolls, the site of the discovery, the origin of the Scrolls, the number of the scrolls and their contents, and the modern publication of the Scrolls. Second, using an analytic method on texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the booklet sheds light on the life and practices of the inhabitants of Khirbet Qumran: their name, location and identity; their ranks; authority structures and process of admission to the community. Third, through direct commentary on the appropriate texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the booklet clarifies the religious thought of the inhabitants of Qumran: their way of worship, their calendar; their ritual bath; their ritual sacrifice and their common meal. It provides an exposé of the future expectations of the Essenes about the coming of the Messiah, of the end of days, and of immortality and resurrection. In conclusion, the booklet discusses the significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls for Christians. It clarifies the relation between the Dead Sea Scrolls and early Christianity, and the reason for Christian interest in the Dead Sea scrolls today. It also shows the common features between early Christianity and the inhabitants of Qumran.

Editorial Review:

For more than three decades, Professor David Flusser of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem has pioneered new understandings of the Jewish background of early Christianity. Many have been fascinated by his unique monograph on Jesus, translated into several languages, Most of his scholarly articles in English, including some new contributions as well as many published in not easily accessible journals, have been collected in this one volume. A must for New Testament scholars, and students of early Judaism, it will also be welcomed by the many lay persons for whom Professor Flusser has provided illumination on the origins of Christian faith.

Never a Dead Issue 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

A little on the old side now (1992) The Dead Sea Scrolls After Forty Years is a nice little overview of the history of the Scrolls: their discovery, their origin, their translation, and the contention over their intellectual "ownership." The slender volume is a printed version of a symposium conducted at the Smithsonian Institute and given by three prominent scholars (Vanderkam, McCarter, and Sanders) and introduced and moderated by Hershel Shanks, the founder, editor and publisher of Biblical Archaeology Review among other periodicals. The book is divided into four sections, the last three followed by a question and answer session, themselves very informative. The lectures reveal that the process of Biblical textual analysis is always a work in progress--and that what is extracted reflects as much on the evolution of our modern society as on the ancient one. An interesting little book.

Basic 4 out of 5 stars.

Very general and introductory view on the scrolls at Qumran, atleast in my opinion. But, that was because this is a collection of speeches and discussion, so its understandable. I liked having scholars of different thoughts conversing together, and answering some FAQ. But really, one needs to read more than this to really learn about the Dead Sea Scrolls in any amount of depth. (try Norman Golb's book) Also, this book is outdated, 1990. (prior to the 1991 first publication of many of the texts.) INFORMATIONAL: features Hershel Shanks James C. Vanderkam P. Kyle McCarter, Jr. James A. Sanders

Editorial Review:

This edition presents for the first time "all the non-biblical Qumran texts classified according to their genres, together with English translations. Of these texts, some twenty were not previously published. The Hebrew-Aramaic texts in this edition are mainly based on the FARMS database of Brigham Young University, which, in its turn, reflects the text editions of the ancient scrolls (mainly "DJD) with great precision, including modern diacritical signs. The Reader consists of six individual parts. The purpose of the classification is to enhance the research facilities of the individual texts within their respective genres, especially in courses at Universities and Colleges.

Informative! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Apocalypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls is well written and informative. The basic thesis in this book is the differing Apocalyptic views that prevailed during different periods of history, with the Dead Sea Scrolls being the main subject. I found this book interesting, and informative without criticism. There is also information in here as to the book of Enoch- very early beliefs. From there it goes to Dead Sea Scroll sects and the expectation of messiahs, the teacher of righteousness, rewards and punishments in the last Apocalyptic days. This author, John J. collins, wrote an excellent overview of similar but varying belief systems. He goes to show how history has affected and altered beliefs, but not completely! This book is well worth its price for anyone interested in Apocalypticism.

Editorial Review:

The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls 50 years ago revealed Jewish apocalypticism that was before unknown. The scrolls chronicled life in an apocalyptic community, whose members believed that the end of the world was nearing. When the end did not occur, the community then believed they were already living the afterlife. John J. Collins explores the issue of apocalypticism in the Scrolls within a Jewish context and how the notions of the "end", Messianic expectation and eternal life affected the Dead Sea sect. This is the first and most up-to-date study of the Dead Sea community since the scrolls were discovered.

Editorial Review:

The Dead Sea Scrolls are a household name, yet many people do not know what they say or why they are important. The Dead Sea Scrolls provides all the background they will need to appreciate these unique ancient documents. Readers will learn how the Scrolls were found, how they became embroiled in controversy, what light they shed on our understanding of Judaism and early Christianity, and how they have helped scholars understand the development of the Biblical text and the Biblical canon. All of the articles in The Dead Sea Scrolls are written by leading scholars but are aimed at a general audience. The book is also a treat for the eyes, illustrated with more than 90 color photographs.
