This book is a gentle reminder of the true reason that we celebrate Christmas. Lucado writes in warm & inviting manner, he explains the birth of Christ and how its relevant to all people, without coming off as if he is lecturing. The book talks about God's love and why it was necessary for Christ to be here. It's a good book to remind you of what is important this holiday season. The book is filled with beautiful images like the one on the front cover. It's a book worth having. The book can also be used by anyone who wants to know more about Christ and why he came.

Sick of Religion?......so was Jesus 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book should be given free on the streets!!!!!!!....
I have always been against religion, before knowing God and now that I know it, even more. This book strips away thousands of years of empty, lifeless, meaningless religion. Jesus didnt come to earth to establish a new religion, he came to revolutionize the earth, he came to abolish religion, he was against religion. He has been the most irreligios man who had stepped the earth. Religion doesnt points towards God and God doesnt points towards religion. Many people in order to be against religion they consider themselves spiritual, and they seek an alternative path to spirituality believing that God is equal to religion. Thats why so many people run away from God because they think that God is religion. People are tired of religion. And me too! Who wants to be part of a organized religion which instead of freeing people it enslaves them? Men have turn the word of God into a set of rules and laws. Religion have made atrocities in the name of God along the history. Massacres and cold-blooded mass executions have been made in the name of Jesus because of religion, and not only within the christian faith but religions in general. Religion doesnt cover the breadth of what God is and what you can do with him reigning in your heart. Religion tells a boring story about a boring jesus that was boring and dull. Jesus wasnt like that! He broke the establishment, he went against the stream, he was creative, he never did the same thing twice, he was always innovating...hey! that doesnt sound like religion does it?....Its time to revolutionize this earth like Jesus did. Im glad im part of the generation that will bring the real message of God to the culture. Im from Uruguay (Latin America), to realize what God is doing around the world is great, books like this makes you wanna conquer the world, makes you proud of what you got in your heart, of what you believe. Im waiting impatiently for the next book of Bruxy, I enjoyed this so much, I can picture Jesus smiling with hope, definitely this is the type of book that is backed up with the power of God. The way Bruxy writes is awsome, is such a refreshing reading. He teaches you with examples and basing on the bible. He takes out every religous stereotype and show you the real message of God. Besides he explains in the book that he isnt a special man sent from God who has benn iluminated and that he has "THE" answer. He just isnt afraid to speak the truth...Jesus neither...and me neither...I dont follow any religion. im not into religion. im against it. im a christian. I follow christ.....the most irreligios man who had stepped the earth....

Editorial Review:

Throughout the history of our world, religion has been a contentious concept. Battles have been launched, people killed, and judgments proclaimed all in the name of fervent beliefs. Even today, strife rages around the world as groups insist they represent God's true intentions. But what if God himself has no interest in religion?

Author Bruxy Cavey asserts that Christ came to earth not to create a new religion but to destroy the very idea. To permanently shatter every barrier that exists between God and people. To unite and not divide.

In The End of Religion, Cavey shares that relationship has no room for religion. Believers and seekers alike will discover anew the wondrous promise found in our savior. And Christ's eternal call to walk in love and freedom will resonate with readers of all ages and denominations.

Discovering The Complete Jesus 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is an extraordinary, sold five star book aimed at revealing exactly where Jesus stood on the political scale of his time. Through careful analysis of quotes from the New Testament, author Obery Hendricks discovers a politically liberal, even radical Jesus who worked tirelessly and risked his life daily to organize the poor and protest against their oppression by a brutal Roman occupation thoroughly aided by self-serving high priests and an all-too-greedy Jewish aristocracy.

This is the political Jesus that today's Christian Right doesn't want you to know about. Obery compares Jesus' own words to Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and other luminaries of the politically Conservative Right and definitively demonstrates how their political thinking and actions are not in support of the teachings of Jesus, but actually in opposition to the Jesus they praise.

Clear definitions of what it means to be Conservative or Liberal and carefully drawn lists of the political accomplishments of both Liberals and Conservatives from the founding of America to the present are put forth, and the reader can decide among today's followers of Jesus who are the hypocrites, the liars, the unfortunate misguided, and who are the real followers of the whole and complete Jesus.

Of course Jesus was morally conservative on personal piety, and of course, this is a vital part of Jesus' message. However, ignorance of the politically liberal and radical nature of Jesus' mission is as dangerous today as ignorance of the politically liberal and radical nature of the thought and actions of most of our Founding Fathers. Obery has put together a wonderful case for continuing on with Jesus' liberation theology; treat the people and their needs as holy. If you're tired of Jesus meek and mild, find out here who the complete Jesus is. This is Obery's Jesus and mine, too.

Editorial Review:

Who was Jesus? And how was this first-century political revolutionary, whose teachings are meant to lead the way to freedom, turned into a meek and mild servant of the status quo? How is it possible to profess a belief in Jesus, yet ignore the suffering of the poor and the needy? Just how truly faithful to the vision of Jesus are the many politicians who claim to be Christian? These are the kinds of questions Obery Hendricks, a biblical scholar, activist, and minister, asks in this provocative new book. In this day and age of heated political debate, Hendricks’s The Politics of Jesus stands out as much for its brilliant re-creation of the life and mind of Jesus of Nazareth as for its scathing critique of modern politicians “of faith.”

Editorial Review:

Jesus the Black Messiah; Jesus the Jew; Jesus the Hindu sage; Jesus the Haight-Asbury hippie: these Jesuses join the traditional figure of Jesus Christ in American Jesus, which was acclaimed upon publication in hardcover as an altogether fresh exploration of American history--and as the liveliest book about Jesus to appear in English in years.

Our nation's changing images of Jesus, Stephen Prothero contends, are a kind of looking class into the national character. Even as most Christian believers cleave to a traditional faith, other people give Jesus a leading role as folk hero, pitchman, and countercultural icon. And so it has been since the nation's founding--from Thomas Jefferson, who took scissors to his New Testament to sort out true from false Jesus material; to the Jews, Buddhists and Muslims who fit Jesus into their own traditions; to the people who adapt Jesus for stage and screen and the Holy Land theme park. American Jesus is "a lively, illuminating and accessible survey that takes us into unexpected corners of our shared religious heritage" (Dan Cryer, Newsday).

Jesus spent over 20 Years in India 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

It seems Christians are hell-bent in twisting and manipulating history.
The fact that Jesus went to India is not speculation, just ask the many educated and knowledgeable people in India.

The Roman-Christian emperor Constantinople did the same in 100AD by dismissing the science of reincarnation that Jesus spoke about, causing many testaments to be destroyed. There is still mention of reincarnation in the remaining gospel - the most direct reference to reincarnation is "The Wheel of Birth."

There were more testaments destroyed than what remains simply because Christians want to manipulate the truth.

Read this for substance, not style. 5 out of 5 stars.

"Jesus Lived in India" looks (and often reads) like a text book. But it is easy to dismiss this book because of the writing style. Don't read this for style, but for substance. Holger Kersten has taken the Nicholas Notovitch story of the Tibetan scrolls about Issa and given enough surrounding and supporting material to give color and context to the idea and notion that Jesus could indeed have spent his "lost years" in India. He examines the Gospel of Thomas and makes one realize that there was much more than what met the eye in St. Thomas being sent to India by Jesus. The crucifixion and the possibility of Jesus having survived is described in a relaxed, unhurried pace. The commonalities between the teachings of Jesus and the spiritual traditions of India are covered in substantial detail (also covered in The Rozabal Line. I would definitely recommend this book... I enjoyed it.

Editorial Review:

Presents irrefutable evidence that Jesus did indeed live in India, dying there in old age. From the author of the best-selling The Jesus Conspiracy.

A Child Called Jesus 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Decades ago when George Lucas presented STAR WARS for the first time, certain movie reviewers criticized it for its "silliness" and that "it would be easily forgotten." How wrong they were, and how embarrassed they now must be.

Variety has criticized films that are ahead of their time. Take for example the TV movie A CHILD CALLED JESUS, starring Matteo Bellina. Variety complains about long shots, excessive makeup, amateur sets, unrealistic dialogue and unsynchronized dubbing.

But many people who have seen this film have praised it for its uniqueness compared to other Jesus films. Just visit www.imdb.com for reviews about this film. If you watch it, you will be mesmerized by the long shots; you will see that the makeup is NOT excessive (the actors have very natural skin tones compared to Cecil B. de Mille actors); you will observe that the sets are as natural as they should be in a Middle Eastern country; you will appreciate the dialogue as the words would personally touch you; you will tolerate the dubbing because this isn't even the fault of the filmmakers.

I am glad that this book is recommending the watching of this film to help readers understand the Jesus they never knew. Although it may seem that some parts are apocryphal, they do not necessarily go against the Gospels. These unbiblical scenes "could have happened" -- for didn't the evangelist John say that Jesus did so many things that they couldn't be fit into the Gospels?

Grateful for this gift from Mitchell 5 out of 5 stars.
41 of 48 people found this review helpful.

I spent a good 15 years of my life trying to make peace with Christianity. I've struggled to appreciate the avid Christians' ability to embrace the Bible as a literal transcription of God's word. I've struggled to forgive those who applied peer pressure to me as a young teen to "accept Jesus as my personal savior." I've pondered with bewilderment the idea that God would create us with inquisitive, questioning minds but then require us to engage in blind acceptance of Jesus' teachings.

Finally, I was pushed over the edge by an evangelical Christian housemate who wouldn't shut up, and I picked up Mitchell's book in the hope of developing my gentle art of verbal self-defense. What an expected blessing this book has been! I was touched deeply and permanently by Mitchell's focus on forgiveness, and the many ways in which the teachings of Jesus the man are relevant to finding the Kingdom of Heaven within myself every day. Mitchell's book has helped me make peace with Christianity and Christians, and that is no small gift.

Editorial Review:

A long history of biblical exegesis and theological reflection has shaped our understanding of the atonement today. The more prominent highlights of this history have acquired familiar names for the household of faith: Christus Victor, penal substitutionary, subjective, governmental. Recently the penal substitutionary view, and particularly its misappropriations, has been critiqued, and a lively debate has taken hold within evangelicalism. This book offers a "panel" discussion of four views of atonement maintained by four evangelical scholars. The proponents and their views are:

  • Gregory A. Boyd: Christus Victor view
  • Joel B. Green: kaleidescopic view
  • Bruce R. Reichenbach: healing view
  • Thomas R. Schreiner: penal substitutionary view

Following an introduction written by the editors, each participant first puts forth the case for their view. Each view is followed by responses from the other three participants, noting points of agreement as well as disagreement.

This is a book that will help Christians understand the issues, grasp the differences and proceed toward a clearer articulation of their understanding of the atonement.

Market/Audience
  • Pastors and thoughtful lay people
  • Students and professors of theology

Features and Benefits
  • Gives the opportunity to see proponents of various views put forth their case and respond to others.
  • Offers perspective on an important debate in evangelical theology.
  • Helps readers shape their own views.

I put the following work under your protection. It contains my opinion upon Religion. You will do me the justice to remember, that I have always strenuously supported the Right of every man to his opinion, however different that opinion might be to mine. He who denies to another this right, makes a slave of himself to his present opinion, because he precludes himself the right of changing it. The most formidable weapon against errors of every kind is Reason. I have never used any other, and I trust I never shall. Your affectionate friend and fellow citizen, Thomas Paine.

Brilliant Overview of the Atonement 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Scot McKnight is slowly finding his way to the top of reading lists for many interested in theology, and rightly so [he is quickly gaining ground on my reading list]. "A Community Called Atonement" is both a sweeping overview of the divergent theories of atonement, and a proposal for bringing the divergent views of atonement under a single umbrella of Christ's redeeming work in the world to restore cracked Eikons.

The atonement has too often been squeezed into a one size, one theory fits all box. Often times that box is determined by our denominational influence. McKnight points out that many atonement theories are seriously deficient because they lack any consideration or interaction with Christ's teaching of the Kingdom of God.

"Atonement theories have been shaped by the history of atonement theories, and that history has been dominated by Paul's letter to the Romans so one-sidedly that opening the door to the kingdom upsets the entire conversation." [Page 9]

McKight purports that atonement can only be understood when it is seen through the lens of the work of God to restore cracked Eikons in all interpersonal relations. Atonement must be broadened out from an individual, sin remission only view, to a view that encompasses the work of the entire ecclesiastical community of believers.

Many of our atonement theories capitulate to the very thing that McKnight argues against. We view our problem in the world simply as individual sin. The remedy to this problem is simply an atonement theory that will cover our moral indiscretions, and restore our standing as right moral individuals. Sin however for McKnight goes beyond poor moral decisions. Sin is the "hyperrelational distortion and corruption of hte Eikon's relationship with God and therefore with self, with others, and with the world." [McKnight page 23]

A broad view of the affects of sin will help to broaden out our view of the atonement. If we can move beyond our reformation influenced view of personal sin, we will be able to begin to put our arms around the breadth of the atonement.

McKight offers a view that gathers divergent views of the atonement seeing them as vital parts of the whole. He uses the image of a golf outing. A golfer may have a favorite club, but cannot hope to play a full round of golf with only that club. The same can be said about our views of the atonement. We may have a preferred theory, but our theories in and of themselves cannot fully comprehend the broad scope of the atonement. It takes all the theories together to fully describe the work of Christ on the cross.

McKnight closes his book with an important consideration of the affect of atonement on our praxis as the people of God. Atonement is not simply something that was accomplished 2,000 years ago on the cross, but rather is something that is working its way out through the called out ones. Believers work out the atonement through acts of fellowship, justice, community and prayer. The atonement is not simply an archaic or dusty old theology to be debated and dissected by theologians, but is rather a vibrant and active event that is occurring around us every day.

In short, this book is a brilliant consideration of divergent theories of the atonement, and a great read for both the novice, and advanced student of theology. McKnight has written a classic book on the theory of the atonement.

Editorial Review:

McKnight discusses the value of the church's atonement metaphors, asserting that the theory of atonement fundamentally shapes the life of the Christian and of the church. This book, the first volume in the Living Theology series, contends that while Christ calls humanity into community that reflects God's love, that community then has the responsibility to offer God's love to others through such missional practices of justice and fellowship.

A Community Called Atonement has be endorsed by Emergent Village, the most widely known American emerging church organization.
