Editorial Review:

"He comes as yet unknown into a hamlet of Lower Galilee. He is watched by the cold, hard eyes of peasants living long enough at a subsistence level to know exactly where the line is drawn between poverty and destitution. He looks like a beggar yet his eyes lack the proper cringe, his voice the proper whine, his walk the proper shuffle. He speaks about the rule of God and they listen as much from curiosity as anything else. They know all about rule and power, about kingdom and empire, but they know it in terms of tax and debt, malnutrition and sickness, agrarian oppression and demonic possession. What, they really want to know, can this kingdom of God do for a lame child, a blind parent, a demented soul screaming its tortured isolation among the graves that mark the edges of the village?"
-- from "The Gospel of Jesus," overture to The Historical Jesus

The Historical Jesus reveals the true Jesus--who he was, what he did, what he said. It opens with "The Gospel of Jesus," Crossan's studied determination of Jesus' actual words and actions stripped of any subsequent additions and placed in a capsule account of his life story. The Jesus who emerges is a savvy and courageous Jewish Mediterranean peasant, a radical social revolutionary, with a rhapsodic vision of economic, political, and religious egalitarianism and a social program for creating it.

The conventional wisdom of critical historical scholarship has long held that too little is known about the historical Jesus to say definitively much more than that he lived and had a tremendous impact on his followers. "There were always historians who said it could not be done because of historical problems," writes Crossan. "There were always theologians who said it should not be done because of theological objections. And there were always scholars who said the former when they meant the latter.'

With this ground-breaking work, John Dominic Crossan emphatically sweeps these notions aside. He demonstrates that Jesus is actually one of the best documented figures in ancient history; the challenge is the complexity of the sources. The vivid portrayal of Jesus that emerges from Crossan's unique methodology combines the complementary disciplines of social anthropology, Greco-Roman history, and the literary analysis of specific pronouncements anecdotes, confessions and interpretations involving Jesus. All three levels cooperate equally and fully in an effective synthesis that provides the most definitive presentation of the historical Jesus yet attained.

Editorial Review:

Fully one-third of JesusÂ’ words in the Synoptic Gospels occur in parables. It could be said that knowing the parables is essential for understanding the person of Christ. In his newest work on the parables, Brad Young displays his unique perspective as a scholar steeped in both Jewish and Christian studies. While parables have timeless messages, reinterpretations in new contexts throughout the centuries have distorted the original meanings and undermined the essence of what Jesus intended for his initial listeners. Young examines the parables that best illustrate the parallels between the rabbinic and Gospel parables. Young challenges readers to remember that first-century Judaism was not merely the backdrop for JesusÂ’ teachings but the very stage from which Jesus delivered the message of the kingdom. JesusÂ’ ethics and theology can be properly understood only in the light of first-century Jewish teachings. Young focuses on the historical development and theological significance of parables in both traditions, then he examines five theological subjects that are dealt with in parables: prayer, grace, reconciliation, calling, and sovereignty.

"This great new book by Brad H. Young is a decisive step in the right direction. Like his previous books, this innovative work on the parables shows that Jesus is both a foundation of the Christian faith and at the same time an integral part of Second Temple period Judaism. Jewish thought is not—as is often claimed—merely a background for Jesus but is in reality the original context and natural framework of his message. Few people have recognized this basic fact, not only because of inveterate Christian inhibitions but also because it is a very rare case that a New Testament scholar can break the language barrier and move freely in the Hebrew and Aramaic sources of early Judaism proficiently, as Young is able to do. Similarly, Jewish scholars often do not use their advantage in this area of research and sometimes cannot move freely in the Christian material because even they are not always free from their own inherited inhibitions. All who are involved in the study of Judaism, however, as well as everyone seeking a better understanding of Jesus, will be challenged by Young's creative and solid research." (From the foreword)

Editorial Review:

In this highly accessible discussion, Bart Ehrman examines the most recent textual and archaeological sources for the life of Jesus, along with the history of first-century Palestine, drawing a fascinating portrait of the man and his teachings.
Ehrman shows us what historians have long known about the Gospels and the man who stands behind them. Through a careful evaluation of the New Testament (and other surviving sources, including the more recently discovered Gospels of Thomas and Peter), Ehrman proposes that Jesus can be best understood as an apocalyptic prophet--a man convinced that the world would end dramatically within the lifetime of his apostles and that a new kingdom would be created on earth. According to Ehrman, Jesus' belief in a coming apocalypse and his expectation of an utter reversal in the world's social organization not only underscores the radicalism of his teachings but also sheds light on both the appeal of his message to society's outcasts and the threat he posed to Jerusalem's established leadership.

Debunks the common claims against Christ 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Every Christian has their own story about how they came to know
Jesus Christ as their personal savior. This is known as their testimony. Frank Morrison's testimony can be found in Who Moved the Stone? What makes this story compelling on many levels is that Morrison, an English journalist and one-time skeptic of Christianity, actually began this book as a means to disprove the very foundation of the Christian religion: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He researched numerous historical documents including the four gospels found in the Bible and it became apparent that over the course of his research one question continued to plague him, thus the title of his book. What began as a narrative aimed at refuting the resurrection soon became a testimonial of how one man transformed from skeptic to follower. Rather than argue the case for the resurrection with faith alone, Morrison uses logic and reason to discount the counter-theories that he
once believed to hold the truth. For example, why would the Jewish high
priests hide Christ's body when the resurrection itself poses such a
substantial threat to their power? Why would the disciples do the same
and not immediately proclaim that Christ had risen, knowing that not
doing so would risk the movement running out of steam as had been the
case with other philosophic and religious leaders at the time? Instead,
they waited months before doing so, perhaps because they were asking
the same question that Morrison was asking. And if the resurrection
were false, how could such a large following have developed on its
heels? If you're a Christian, you will enjoy the pure and simple reason that Morrison applies to the trial, conviction, execution and resurrection of Jesus Christ. If you're searching for spiritual answers, Morrison may very well have provided them.

Cost Effective 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you want to make this book available to a large group (like a Sunday School class), this is a cost effective way to do so. The font size is very readable, which is not always the case in books at this price range.

Dare you hire this man on behalf of your defense? 2 out of 5 stars.

Lee Strobel may have been a self proclaimed Atheist, but he would be hard pressed to convince any logic based Atheist with his arguments. His sources are as biased as can be (all faith based believers). At best this book supports the argument that a man named Jesus, a leader of a revolutionary faith, existed. As far as the claim that he was in fact supernatural and the Son of God (whether claimed by Jesus himself or those next in line in authority), unfortunately there is no case. Cult leader after cult leader make such claims with successful fellowship. With the sanity of the leader necessarily in question, they may even believe it themselves and have the best of intentions making fellowship that much more effective. Mix that with the need of reform by a mass populous and there's little to stop it. And you can't overlook the fact that it becomes difficult to argue a case of Christ-hood when such supernatural events have not been witnessed by anyone since the time of such claims. Faith is the sole requirement for a reason. I would love to have read a book that was rock solid on the subject, but sadly it was full of holes.

Many people claim to be Atheists while being completely ignorant of what it means to be so. For example, some people claim to be Atheists because of a disagreement with their God. They are not Atheists. Lee Stroble reminds me of this group of people.

Editorial Review:

Using the dramatic scenario of an investigative journalist pursuing his story and leads, Lee Strobel uses his experience as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune to interview experts about the evidence for Christ from the fields of science, philosophy, and history. Magisterial 5 out of 5 stars.
34 of 34 people found this review helpful.

I was reluctant when this tome about the infancy narratives had been recommended, and after the first chapter discovered this was no ordinary book. There are myriads of commentaries, but none like this! This book elaborates at length on the short gospel narratives of the birth of Jesus, and how the NT authors had woven OT material into those narratives. It elaborates on the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary: not as some wench who did as God told her, but as the first disciple of Christ to say Yes to the call of God; not merely a mother to Christ, but the Mother of the people of God by her fiat. For those who already believe, and even for those who don't, it elaborates why the incarnation is such an awesome historial event, not only in human history, but in salvation history.

Fr. Brown writes with erudition, and, while his audience is scholarly, even novices can read these gems with considerable ease. I initially intended to read the book straight through, but the density and intensity of the material suggested that a more devotional, gradual read would be more beneficial. I admit this is hard to do, because once embarked, these insights propel one to read as much as one can as fast as one can. However you decide to read it, I cannot think of a better introduction, as well as advanced scholarship, that will not leave one unchanged.

He Who Lives in Kashmir Knows Kashmir Best 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 28 people found this review helpful.

It was after reading Professor Hassnain's book that I decided to go to Kashmir and see this "grave of Jesus" for myself. What began as a short excursion became almost a year in Kashmir and is now a lifetime passion. His evidence was so overwhelming and his reserach so thorough, that it draws one in. That is scholarship at its very finest.

I remained in Kashmir nearly a year. As I delved deeper and asked more questions, Professor Hassnain always made the time to help me, just as he had numerous other authors and researchers who came for the same reasons.
Each author, including myself, has acknowledged Professor Hassnain's contributions to their own research and books.

But the truth remains that without Professor Hassnain living in close proximity to the tomb, and having access to secret and unknown documents, the world would not have had much of this information in the first place.

This is a brave man, and a brilliant scholar. Now in his eighties, with white hair and a sparkle in his eye that never diminishes,he is a national treasure of Kashmir. We are blessed to have this book as a beacon for scholars past, present, and future.

This book is already a classic, referred to time and again.
I highly recommend it to anyone studying the history of Jews in Kashmir, and particularly the life of Jesus in India.

Editorial Review:

The Fifth Gospel presents some compelling new evidence about the life of Jesus which has been derived from a variety of sources in the East which are unknown to most Western scholars. By chance, one of the authors found, in 1965, a reference in Ladakh to the discovery of Buddhist scrolls about Jesus. Since then, the authors have been examining evidence about the survival of Jesus Christ at the time of the crucifixion, and his subsequent travels to the East. The authors' main purpose in writing this book is to inform the West that "we in the East have some source material about the historical Jesus who lived on after the crucifixion.... This book was not written in one day, but is a result of many years' continued search for evidence," and provides research on some very compelling questions.

An experience of wonder 5 out of 5 stars.
36 of 36 people found this review helpful.

If occasionally you find that the stories of Jesus found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John have become so familiar they fall flat, this book will help you experience the wonder of reading them again as if for the first time.

The faces of Jesus, his "ways of being and being seen" are illuminated in six chapters: Annunciation, Nativity, Ministry, Last Supper, Crucifixon, and Resurrection.

The focus of the faces of Jesus is that whatever else he may have been, he was a man once and had a "man's face, a human face."

The Old, Old Stories Filled Out with Deeper Insight 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 27 people found this review helpful.

Most of us learned the old, old stories of the Bible as children from our parents or in Sunday school. If we still attend church, the critical few are repeated on an annual basis. And the common scripture readings again cover these moments.

In this book these stories are again repeated. But this time they are combined with a historical view that helps to present a more human view of Jesus, one where we might can view what the man had to go through. In the section on the crucifixion for instance, he talks of how this was a Roman punishment. He adds understanding to the whipping administered beforehand. The Mel Gibson showed this most graphically. But the author points out that the condemned often died under this preliminary punishment, thus being spared the greater one to follow.

Of the crucifixion itself, the whole thing was designed to be as cruel as possible. Death often took two or three days to occur. Jesus was 'fortunate' in surviving only a few hours. And remember that in John, the people involved didn't want the event to continue so the soldiers were instructed to break the legs of the three on the crosses. This put all the weight on the arms and caused suffication to occur quickly.

This little book provides a view that fills in background information to those told in the Bible

Editorial Review:

With timeless insight, Frederick Buechner introduces us to the Jesus of the Gospel. The old, old story begins to ring new as Buechner revisits the ancient stories and shows us different aspects of the face of Jesus. Here we see the story behind the story. The story which we are invited into. Our story.

The identity of the Christ child 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (10/07)

Lee Strobel, award-winning author, journalist and investigative reporter, has written "The Case for Christmas." Stroble presents a logical case to help the reader determine for themselves if the babe in the manger, Jesus, was the person He claimed to be, Son of Man, Son of God, and very God Himself.

From the first paragraph of the introduction to the last paragraph of the conclusion, Strobel's writing is compelling, intellectually challenging, thought-provoking, and convincing. Using eyewitness accounts, archaeological confirmation, and profile evidence Strobel helps the reader to arrive at a conclusion, their own personal verdict.

Stroble's own journey to discover the reality of Christmas led him to seek counsel. He used his experience as an investigative reporter and the tools of his trade in his to find answers. Strobel presents the results of interviews with leading scholars in areas of biographical evidence, and scientific evidence.

In presenting his case Stroble presented fingerprint evidence to answer the hard question, "Did Jesus, Jesus alone, match the identity of the promised Messiah." I personally found this chapter on fingerprint evidence insightful. The fulfilling of Old Testament prophecies regarding the Messiah gave authenticity to Gospel accounts of Jesus as the Messiah.

Strobel also presented profile evidence to see if Jesus fulfilled the attributes of God. The incarnation, omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence, eternality, and immutability all fit in the sketch and are found in the Christmas child. Reflecting on these attributes as a devotional reading offers a rich and rewarding experience.

The book is designed especially for the Christmas and Advent Season. Strobel gives a strong presentation of the Christmas message for anyone seeking understanding of the tenets of the Christian faith, and for thought provoking reflection and mediation for the Christian.

The format and design of this compact, attractive, book - "The Case for Christmas" -- make it an excellent gift for those family members, friends, agnostics, or atheists, who are seeking answers to finding answers in their pursuit for finding personal meaning to the reality of the Christian message of Christmas.

Editorial Review:

By focusing on the "hows" and whys" of Christmas, this warm yet journalistic book will help believers reaffirm their faith while guiding seekers as they pursue solid answers about this miraculous occurrence. With material from The Case for Christ as well as new ideas from author Lee Strobel, this book is designed to be an tool to give away to family, friends, neighbors, and others who want to understand what happened at Christmas 2,000 years ago. Padded hardcover.

Makes a pretty good case for the historicity of Jesus 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Just finished reading this book today. Overall, the historical Christian and non-Christian evidence cited was pretty thorough. The author used the evidence to create a pretty strong case for the historical existence of Jesus and the early Christian movement. As a Christian looking for a stronger, factual-based foundation, I thought the book was very helpful. Having said that, I will say a couple of other things about the book. It is certainly biased towards a Christian viewpoint of the historical Jesus. Although the author tried to present an unbiased presentation of the information, there certainly were examples where the Christian bias took over. The author commented on one non-Christian source by saying that their statements were highly supportive of a historical Jesus. But the very next sentence said that the same source said other things about Jesus that were highly suspect and couldn't be trusted. That's sort of like saying, "this person tells the truth and is highly credible...except for the stuff I don't agree with." However, on a topic as highly controversial as this, one must always remember that any book on this topic will be written from a biased viewpoint. Even if one isn't starting with a Christian or non-Christian viewpoint, the whole reason they're writing their book is because they obviously believe something different than all the other books written on the topic. Therefore, they are, at the very least, biased towards their opinion of what the historical evidence says. So don't write reviews flaming the authors for being biased. Finding an author who is 100% unbiased is about as rare as finding the loch ness monster. It's possible, just not highly probable.
