A great companion resource for in-depth daily Bible readings 5 out of 5 stars.

This is truly a wonderful blessing! This book adds an extra level of inspiration to study the Bible everyday. I have learned so much more about scripture through this book than I ever learned from Bible readings alone. Kudos!

A must have 5 out of 5 stars.

This is little One Year Bible Companion
is so very helpful to me. It gives
historical and spirital insights into
the passages that I am reading.

For Evangelicals & Literalists only 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The One Year Bible itself is a great book for daily spiritual and reflective reading, the most convenient text for that I've found. (I use the Kindle edition, but have the Catholic paper edition with the Apochrypha also).

This Companion though is terrible from a scholarship standpoint. Right off the bat, it lists traditional, literalist authorships, e.g. Moses as the author of Genesis, etc. Along with ridiculous times of authorship. Even the Roman Catholic Church recognizes that authentic bible scholarship abandoned such untenable positions decades ago, and to still be claiming them hampers real insights to the development and meaning of these sacred texts.

Get the Bible, skip the Companion.

Editorial Review:

Eugene Peterson is convinced that the way we read the Bible is as important as that we read it. Do we read the Bible for information about God and salvation, for principles and "truths" that we can use to live better? Or do we read it in order to listen to God and respond in prayer and obedience?

The second part of Peterson’s momentous five-volume work on spiritual theology, Eat This Book challenges us to read the Scriptures on their own terms, as God’s revelation, and to live them as we read them. With warmth and wisdom Peterson offers greatly needed, down-to-earth counsel on spiritual reading. In these pages he draws readers into a fascinating conversation on the nature of language, the ancient practice of lectio divina, and the role of Scripture translations; included here is the "inside story" behind Peterson’s own popular Bible translation, The Message.

Countering the widespread practice of using the Bible for self-serving purposes, Peterson here serves readers with a nourishing entrée into the formative, life-changing art of spiritual reading.

Total Forgiveness 5 out of 5 stars.

This book should be read by all Christians. It will give each a new insight into a relationship with God.

Weak writing about Matthew 18:15-17 (Biblical Church Discipline) 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I read John MacArthur's book The Freedom and Power of Forgivness and R.T. Kendall's book Total Forgiveness a week apart from each other. I found the MacArthur book a stronger book, its biblical insights, and the important coverage given to Matthew 18:15-17, Biblical Church Discipline.

Mr. Kendall's book, while sincere and hopeful, doesn't properly articulate Matthew 18:15-17 for dealing with peoples' strongholds of sin. Either Mr. Kendall wasn't taught it, doesn't know how to carry it out, or doesn't know how to carry it out effectively and Biblically. Some of his suggestions about why we shouldn't confront people are contrary to Jesus' express commands that we are required to confront people in their sins (Matt:18:15-17). I found Jay Adams book Handbook of Church Discipline helpful in explaining Matthew 18:15-17, along with John MacArthur's book on Forgiveness, and Ken Sande's book The Peacemaker.

Editorial Review:

The act of Total Forgiveness may be the hardest thing we are ever called to do...'Total forgiveness is as spectacular as any miracle. We are talking about a feat greater than climbing Mount Everest. It means the highest watermark in anyone's spiritual pilgrimage. And yet it is within reach of any of us.' This book, possibly R T Kendall's most important work to date, explains what God calls for as 'total forgiveness'. No sin or action is unforgivable, says R T, and we are called to keep no record of wrongs, to refuse to punish those who have hurt us, to show mercy and to avoid any form of bitterness. A radical message for a divided world.

DO NOT BUY THIS CLASSIC IN THIS EDITION!!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
16 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This is not a review of the work itself.

One comment only: surprisingly enough, the editor of this volume, the 'world renowned' Richard Tuck DOES NOT PROVIDE NOTES, please pay attention: the book was originally published in 1651 (or something) but nevertheless the so called Hobbes scholar does not provide scholarly notes... and this is supposed to be a 'student's edition'... ha ha

Shame on you, Mr. Tuck!

What to do with Modern World 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This huge work is the foundation of classical liberalism; it is the basis for Locke, for Smith, and all economic neo-liberalists all the way up to the current period. Written during the English Reformation, Hobbes was confronted with the problem of absolute individualism; he begins this work of political theory with a demolishment of objective truth swift enough to impress any post-modernist. He then proceeds to demonstrate the logical conclusion of man in a state of nature, and compels the modern world to enter into his social contract, or Leviathan out of necessity and fear. It is tempting to write off Hobbes as a cynic, but who can deny that much of what motivates individuals in the modern world is simply a fear to maintain survival and acceptance. It is the driving force of modern societies in terms of economic competition, and inter-national conflicts. Hobbes was a thinker of true depth and insight, though his ideas are so commonly ingrained in modern society that it is difficult to see why they were revolutionary when they were composed.

Editorial Review:

Hobbes’ classic work has set the tone for the course of political philosophy through to our own day. This new Broadview edition includes the full text of the 1651 edition, together with a wide variety of background documents that help set the work in context. Also included are an introduction, explanatory notes, and a chronology.

Yoga of Jesus 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Great book written by a great man. It has renewed my perspective on Christ (original perspective was that of a Catholic who received First Communion in a French church in Rabbat Morocco, and later attended Catechism in Southern Spain as child). The author, Yogananda, really taps into the beauty and truths that I always suspected were the things that all religions had in common.

Editorial Review:

In this remarkable book, Paramahansa Yogananda reveals the hidden yoga of the Gospels and confirms that Jesus, like the ancient sages and masters of the East, not only knew yoga but taught this universal science of God-realization to his closest disciples. Compiled from the author's highly praised two-volume work, The Second Coming of Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ Within You, this insightful and compact book transcends the centuries of dogma and misunderstanding that have obscured the original teachings of Jesus, showing that he taught a unifying path by which seekers of all faiths can enter the kingdom of God. Topics include:
•The lost years of Jesus in India
•The ancient science of meditation: how to become a Christ
•The true meaning of baptism.

Experiencing Assumptions 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

While many Christians today will be surprised to hear this, the very idea that God has a personal will for your life separate from His Sovereign or His Moral will is not uncontested. Blackaby simply assumes that his readers already agree with this view without giving any evidence for it (nor even bothering to state it). This assumption has gone unnoticed by most Christians, for this view of God's will is prevalent among evangelical churches. But the fact is that the idea of God having an individual will for every believer that can be known in advance may not be true. Blackaby's further assumptions (such as God's means of communication) are themselves based on this questionable premise. This opens the door for questioning not only Blackaby's methodology, but the most fundamental aspect of his teaching.

Further, "Experienceing God" promotes a dangerous view of God's methods (does God speak today like He spoke then? And to whom?); a dangerous view of the Christian Life (does the Bible always portray the believer's life like Moses' or Abraham's?); a dangerous view of Scripture (are only parts of the Bible God's word for us?); and a dangerous view of Christ - (did Christ have crisis of faith or make major adjustments for the Father?). These are all expanded upon here:
[..]
In light of the very questionable and unsupported assumptions Blackaby relies on for his whole system, the objectively false philosophy he espouses, the confusing and sometimes contradictory methodology he supports, the dangerous consequences that many of his principles could lead to, and the impossibly subjective and circular means of verification that the system is tested by, it is my conclusion that Experiencing God should not be taught as a means for discovering God's will today (although it would be useful as a resource for learning how God spoke to unique men and women in Biblical times in order that they might fulfill their truly "God sized" assignments).

The New Testament does not teach that Christians must try to figure out where God is at work around them so that they can join Him. We already know God's will for us in this regard, we already have our "marching orders":

* Preach the gospel (2 Timothy 4:2)
* Defend the faith (1 Peter 3:15)
* Disciple the nations ( Matthew 28:19-20)

God is at work wherever we are - what are we waiting for?

Editorial Review:

Experiencing God has sold more than 4 million copies! This 15th Anniversary Edition contains new content from Henry Blackaby and others.

This remarkable book will help any believer renew and revitalize his love for the Lord by seeing His love for us. Experiencing God is designed to help each of us recognize our own personal relationship with God as He reveals His divine plan and guiding hand. Even as we try to understand Him, God comes alongside us to accomplish His work through us. (Also available as part of the Leader Kit for A 40 Day Experience: Reality.)

Editorial Review:

One myth from the history of every great civilization spoke of beings descending from heaven and using human and animal DNA to create giant offspring. Rabbinical authorities, Septuagint translators and early church fathers understood this as a factual record of history. The phenomenon began with the Watchers who spawned Nephilim resulting in judgment from God. The ancients also knew Bible passages that predict the Nephilim will return when Iraq and Iran are invaded and destroyed. Is this prophecy about to be fulfilled? Is man, in his rush to play god through biological weapons, biotechnology, and genetic manipulation, opening gateways to a supernatural unknown? Nephilim Stargates and the Return of the Watchers is a glimpse into this past, present, and future phenomena, with an eye on what sages and scientists believe and what futurists and prophets may fear. Thomas Horn is CEO of Raiders News Network, a syndicated columnist, and the bestselling author of The Ahriman Gate. He has written two other books as well as dozens of published editorials and magazine articles. His works have been referred to by writers of the LA Times Syndicate, MSNBC, Christianity Today, Coast to Coast, World Net Daily, and White House Correspondents. Editorial Review:

On Monday morning, October 2, 2006, a gunman entered a one-room Amish school in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania. In front of twenty-five horrified pupils, thirty-two-year-old Charles Roberts ordered the boys and the teacher to leave. After tying the legs of the ten remaining girls, Roberts prepared to shoot them execution with an automatic rifle and four hundred rounds of ammunition that he brought for the task. The oldest hostage, a thirteen-year-old, begged Roberts to "shoot me first and let the little ones go." Refusing her offer, he opened fire on all of them, killing five and leaving the others critically wounded. He then shot himself as police stormed the building. His motivation? "I'm angry at God for taking my little daughter," he told the children before the massacre.

The story captured the attention of broadcast and print media in the United States and around the world. By Tuesday morning some fifty television crews had clogged the small village of Nickel Mines, staying for five days until the killer and the killed were buried. The blood was barely dry on the schoolhouse floor when Amish parents brought words of forgiveness to the family of the one who had slain their children.

The outside world was incredulous that such forgiveness could be offered so quickly for such a heinous crime. Of the hundreds of media queries that the authors received about the shooting, questions about forgiveness rose to the top. Forgiveness, in fact, eclipsed the tragic story, trumping the violence and arresting the world's attention.

Within a week of the murders, Amish forgiveness was a central theme in more than 2,400 news stories around the world. The Washington Post, The New York Times, USA Today, Newsweek, NBC Nightly News, CBS Morning News, Larry King Live, Fox News, Oprah, and dozens of other media outlets heralded the forgiving Amish. From the Khaleej Times (United Arab Emirates) to Australian television, international media were opining on Amish forgiveness. Three weeks after the shooting, "Amish forgiveness" had appeared in 2,900 news stories worldwide and on 534,000 web sites.

Fresh from the funerals where they had buried their own children, grieving Amish families accounted for half of the seventy-five people who attended the killer's burial. Roberts' widow was deeply moved by their presence as Amish families greeted her and her three children. The forgiveness went beyond talk and graveside presence: the Amish also supported a fund for the shooter's family.

AMISH GRACE explores the many questions this story raises about the religious beliefs and habits that led the Amish to forgive so quickly. It looks at the ties between forgiveness and membership in a cloistered communal society and ask if Amish practices parallel or diverge from other religious and secular notions of forgiveness. It will also address the matter of why forgiveness became news. "All the religions teach it," mused an observer, "but no one does it like the Amish." Regardless of the cultural seedbed that nourished this story, the surprising act of Amish forgiveness begs for a deeper exploration. How could the Amish do this? What did this act mean to them? And how might their witness prove useful to the rest of us?

not a good book 2 out of 5 stars.

I did not care for this book. Some of the content in this book is not only wrong, but insulting! The chapter on Mary is particularly offensive. I could not even read it. I would not recommend this book to others.

12 extraordinary woman 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is really great! It talks about the woman in the bible but it also shows me how much similar they are to me and other woman around me. They are woman seeking God's heart just like we. The only difference it time. That was then and this is now. Us. I recommend this book to all the extraordinary women our there. Because we are EXTRAORDINARY!

Editorial Review:

They were ordinary, common, and in some cases shockingly low-caste, yet each was made extraordinary by her life-changing encounter with God.

Readers will be challenged and motivated by Twelve Extraordinary Women, a poignant and personal look into the lives of some of the Bible's most faithful women. Their struggles and temptations are the same trials faced by all believers at all ages. Inside this book, best-selling author and Bible teacher John MacArthur shows that the God to whom they were so committed is the same God who continues to mold and use ordinary people today.
