Red Letter version w/ references to scriptures 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The best study of the "social & moral" teachings of Jesus
is this version of the Jefferson Bible.
It has red-letter text for the quotations of Jesus,
and cites the NT passages from which they are taken.
It is in the King James version,
so you may want to use [...]
for the modern English translations of the Jesus quotations,
which will give the poetry of the KJV new life.
Taking out all the Theology & Eschatology
was a brilliant inovation by Thomas Jefferson.

Helped make my decision about christianity 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

...And the verdict?
After tearing out every ridiculous thing in the New Testament, all we're left with is 4 or 5 parables repeated in slightly different ways, showing not one but two different kinds of Jesus - the peaceful, forgiving Jesus, and the vengeful, cut your head off with a flaming sword Jesus. Christianity? No thanks.
I enjoyed the essay TJ wrote at the front though.

Editorial Review:

Thomas Jefferson believed that the pure-principled teachings of Jesus should have been separated from the dogma and abuse of organized religion of the day. This led him to recast, by cutting and pasting from the gospels, a new narrative of the life and teachings of Jesus, where, according to Jefferson, "there will be found remaining the most sublime and benevolent code of morals which has ever been offered to man."

Good, motivational story 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a pre-medical student, I found that I could really identify with Dr. Carson in this autobiographical sketch. His personality really shines in his writing and his enthusiasm for learning, medicine, and achieving his *personal best* in everything is quite infectious.

Since hundreds have reviewed this and other books written by Dr. Carson, I'll refrain from repeating the synopsis. But, I'd like to add that for me, this was not a 5 star book for one reason in particular: too much emphasis on spirituality and miracles.

I have been a life-long Christian and I consider myself pretty spiritual (though not overtly). I don't mind religious motivational books but in this particular book, Dr. Carson repeatedly cited these incredible miracles which were happening to him day in and day out. First, he was being visited by a mysterious teacher who taught him how to solve every problem in his sleep the night before his chemistry final. Then there were countless surgical procedures that had a one in a million chance of complete success that he performed one after another flawlessly. By the end of the book the intrigue had worn off and skepticism set in. I have faith, but I'm also practical-- and honestly, some of the stuff in this book just seems too good to be true.

Overall however, I enjoyed the story. I would recommend it to those who enjoy religious, motivation and self-help books as well as those who like to read about success stories and medical fiction. B++

Book tells wives to be submissive to husbands and to avoid a "cocky" attitude 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Piper's book was shallow, repetitive, and not useful. He also has a painfully bad writing style that was tiring to wade through. He advocates disturbing things like wives always being submissive to their husbands. He warns wives not to be "cocky" in their behavior to their husbands. Repellent, ugly stuff.

Editorial Review:

Scripture reveals that the great business of life is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever. In this paradigm-shattering classic, newly revised and expanded, John Piper reveals that the debate between duty and delight doesn't truly exist: Delight is our duty. Readers will embark on a dramatically different and joyful experience of their faith

The book was definitely old and yellowed but totally in tact otherwise. It was appropriately priced and well worth it!

I was very pleased with the timeliness of delivery and the book was in very great shape. Thanks for an easy purchase.

Timeless 5 out of 5 stars.

I have recommended and/or given this book to many, many friends over the years since I first read it. I give it with a caveat: You must have a soft heart toward the Lord and a listening ear for what He will tell you as you read it. It is like no other book as it tells the allegorical tale of Much Afraid and her special traveling companions as she is lead to escape the dismal, loathsome valley she was born to. She encounters many trials and tribulations on her transforming journey -- but Help is ever present, even in the darkest times . . . and the end of the book -- a new beginning. Highly recommend this book!

Hinds Feet On High Places 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an awesome book. On of the best allegories I have ever read. One of those books that changes you life. It is truely inspiring.

A keeper for life-a timeless read 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I read, Hinds feet in high places in my mid 20's, mid 30's and now mid 40's each and every time I've read this great allegory I'm once again drawn back to the love, care and grace of the Lord. I'm also keenly aware of those things in my life which need to be taken out and placed on the Father's altar. This is such a great and timeless book everyone should have the pleasure to read and to glean all they can from Much Afraid and the Fearing family.

Editorial Review:

While most people think that the twenty-seven books of the New Testament are the only sacred writings of the early Christians, this is not at all the case. A companion volume to Bart Ehrman's Lost Christianities, this book offers an anthology of up-to-date and readable translations of many non-canonical writings from the first centuries after Christ--texts that have been for the most part lost or neglected for almost two millennia. Here is an array of remarkably varied writings from early Christian groups whose visions of Jesus differ dramatically from our contemporary understanding. Readers will find Gospels supposedly authored by the apostle Philip, James the brother of Jesus, Mary Magdalen, and others. There are Acts originally ascribed to John and to Thecla, Paul's female companion; there are Epistles allegedly written by Paul to the Roman philosopher Seneca. And there is an apocalypse by Simon Peter that offers a guided tour of the afterlife, both the glorious ecstasies of the saints and the horrendous torments of the damned, and an Epistle by Titus, a companion of Paul, which argues page after page against sexual love, even within marriage, on the grounds that physical intimacy leads to damnation. In all, the anthology includes fifteen Gospels, five non-canonical Acts of the Apostles, thirteen Epistles, a number of Apocalypes and Secret Books, and several Canon lists. Ehrman has included a general introduction, plus brief introductions to each piece. This important anthology gives readers a vivid picture of the range of beliefs that battled each other in the first centuries of the Christian era.

Buy this!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have this and have bought it for others. I have actually written down prayers on index cards. When I am struggling with an area, like forgiveness, I carry the card with me to read / pray throughout the day. It is effective and helps me put my focus where it should be.

Beth Moore is always a winner! 5 out of 5 stars.

Beth Moore's Bible Studies are always great. No matter which one you choose, it will be good. They are meaty, easy to do and make you think more than just a fill-in-the-blank study.

Editorial Review:

How do we practice II Corinthians 10:3-5, "tearing down strongholds by captivating our minds with the knowledge of God"? Beth Moore shows you how in Praying God's Word.

A topical prayer guide addressing fourteen common strongholds and what Scripture reveals about each of them, Praying God's Word presents Scriptures in prayer form to be incorporated into your daily prayer life.

God's Word, through prayer, helps you overcome bitterness, anger, and unforgiveness, setting you free from each and every stronghold which claims your life, and replacing it with the mind of Christ.

Some things are better read about than read 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I read this for a book group I was in, and was rather peeved at being forced to blow so much time on what is essentially useful only to the Classical historian or Scholasticism buff. Realistically, Augustine is just a particularly eloquent proponent of a religious argument we all get in Sunday School at age 10: The things of this world are transitory and passing, but the things of the next world are eternal and more valuable. You can almost hear the monotonous cadence. If what you want is to add to your already-considerable knowledge of the particulars of late Roman civilization, then this is the book for you. If you're in seminary and reading Aquinas, and you're thinking, "I'd certainly like to know more about his major intellectual influences," then this is the book for you. But if what you want is an increased familiarity with the major ideas of Western civilization, then do yourself a favor and go pick up a pair of textbooks: one on ancient history, the other on classical philosophy. Augustine of Hippo will get a few pages in each one, and that's honestly all he's worth. Plowing through the entirety of The City of God for simple philosophical or theological curiosity would be like reading the complete works of Louis Agassiz just to see what scientific racism was like. Both efforts would be fruitful, in one sense, but in another sense you'd have spent an awful lot of time learning about antiquated theories.

Editorial Review:

One of the great cornerstones in the history of Christian philosophy, The City of God provides an insightful interpretation of the development of modern Western society and the origin of most Western thought. Contrasting earthly and heavenly cities--representing the omnipresent struggle between good and evil--Augustine explores human history in its relation to all eternity. In Thomas Merton's words, "The City of God is the autobiography of the Church written by the most Catholic of her great saints."

This Modern Library Paperback Classics edition is a complete and unabridged version of the Marcus Dods translation.

In order to fully understand the teachings of Jesus and his followers, it is important to understand the large body of Scripture that preceded and informed their thinking. Accurate and Attractive 5 out of 5 stars.

The ESV seems to be a very accurate translation. It does not always read like contemporary English, but sometimes that's an advantage because it makes one stop and think about what one is reading. I really appreciate the way Crossway has some beautiful covers for these Bibles. I'd gotten tired of black and burgundy!

Editorial Review:

The book of Psalms contains the songs and prayers of Israel that are familiar and loved by all. These expressions of praise, faith, sorrow, and frustration cover the full range of human emotions. Whether we are excited about the majesty of God or weighed down by the pain of grief, the psalms give us words to express ourselves to the Lord.

This compact format of the Psalms is perfect for carrying around for those times when we need these God-inspired verses at our fingertips. As an "essentially literal" translation, the ESV is unsurpassed in both accuracy and readability. Written in language that is beautiful, clear, and trustworthy, the ESV sets a new standard--and is truly a Bible for all of life.
