Another Great Lesson and Adventure for the Bears 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

What a wonderful this story is and so true to many a family life. The Berenstain Bears have always been wonderful, but the Go to Sunday School story is a great one to share and explain to family how great going to church and Sunday School can be, even for a bear. :)

I highly recommend this story for families, especially those with kids ages 4-7. This and all the other Berenstain Bear books, especially the newest ones coming from Mike Berenstain, son to the creators Jan and Stan. How busy is your life? Can you find time for church and Sunday School as a family?

A lot of reading 3 out of 5 stars.

Compared to other Berenstain bears books, the new ones by Mike Berenstain have a lot of words and can get a little boring and mundane. They also don't start with the clever little rhyme like his parents did. They still teach the lesson but it's a little bit over kill and if you are reading these at bedtime (like myself) suddenly your reading time is quite a bit longer, so instead of 2 books you may only have time for 1.

Editorial Review:

When Mama Bear decides its been too long since they’ve attended church at the Chapel in the Woods, the Bear family works to get back in the habit. It isn’t long before the family remembers what a wonderful place the church is and finds that going to church is something they look forward to every week.

Very Good Where It Counts 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I'm giving this book 5 stars despite some reservations I have about some of what Galindo offers here, particularly in the area of learning psychology. I'll discuss this more below, but in terms of specific methodologies and approaches to learning in a Christian context, I think this book is full of very good information that teachers and even preachers can refer to repeatedly in their pursuit of becoming very good teachers.

In discussing the craft of teaching, Galindo spends considerable time at the outset of the book discussing how people learn, and how learning itself is multi-faceted and fluid. Galindo interacts with many secular studies about the psychology of learning, what kind of teaching stimulates certain kinds of learning, retention levels, and the all important issue of application of learning. Galindo's extensive interaction with secular studies could be considered either a strength or a weakness in his approach. I consider it to be a strength, though it is noteworthy that at the same point in the book where Galindo is laying the groundwork for Christian teaching by relying heavily on secular studies, he also says that Christian teaching is unique and altogether different from non-Christian teaching. There's an appearance of inconsistency here that Galindo doesn't really deal with, but it's probably minor and I didn't think it ultimately undermined the good stuff he gets to later on in the book. The same could also be said of the notion that 'you can't teach anybody anything'. Galindo too often resorts to bumper sticker axioms in the first section of the book which are easily misconstrued and frankly lessen the impact of his otherwise serious treatment of the subject matter. But again, these things were more annoyances than anything else and do not significantly detract from the meat he offers later.

The strengths of the book are Galindo's assertion that Christian teaching is unique because we are not dealing in teaching merely about facts or events, but about relating to a Person, Jesus Christ. This should necessarily impact on how we conduct our teaching, according to him, and I think that's correct. In the second part of the book, Galindo puts the groundwork laid in the first section to use in suggesting very practical teaching methodologies and approaches to stress relational learning that emphasizes application and relationship. There's lots of good stuff in here that's very practical and should prove very helpful to teachers throughout the church, as well as to church leaders who are looking to strengthen their education programs. While it's true that the reader can get the impression that Galindo is unnecessarily downplaying traditional learning methods by so stressing relationality and application, I do think he's pretty much on the mark in making a case that in Christian teaching specifically, if learning in the classroom doesn't translate into application on the street, our teaching can't really be considered successful.

So while there is some minor chaff here that we could do without, there is a good harvest of healthy wheat in here that is worth paying attention to. Churches expend a lot of resources in their education programs, and I have yet to meet a single pastor who is totally satisfied with the results. That alone makes Galindo's book worth reading, and possibly worth providing to those people in the church whom God has called to teach.

Master the Basics - Here are the Basics! 4 out of 5 stars.
34 of 34 people found this review helpful.

Elmer Towns has given us an impressive collection of the basics of Sunday School teaching. This should not surprise us since he is called Mr. Sunday School. I attended a conference several years ago where Dr. Towns taught about teaching Sunday School. Much of the material from his session is in this small book. The reader will be pleased to discover that he gives pointers for teaching children, youth and adults - all levels of teaching are addressed in this book.

The Foreword of the book states Dr. Towns' qualifications for writing this book. He teaches a 2,000 member Sunday School class. He has taught adult, youth, and children's Sunday School classes in the past. He has taught in Sunday School conferences in each of the 50 United States. The man is sold on Sunday School.

Towns' begins his book addressing readers who do not feel they can teach Sunday School. He is convinced that most anyone can take an active role in the Sunday School ministry of the church. From there he looks at the teaching task itself. From lesson prep to relational evangelism, he covers all aspects of teaching (The chapters on Effective Discussion, Effective Lecture, & Effective Story are very good). He includes chapters on creating an inviting atmosphere for your class, understanding your learners, reviewing previous lessons, accountability, Scripture memorization, and lesson application. He gives the reader pointers for teaching children, youth, and adults.

Purpose! He focuses on the four-fold purpose of Sunday School - Reaching, teaching, winning, caring. He stresses the importance of mastering the basics and then applying the basics to one's teaching in a balanced way. He also stresses the importance of prayer in the life of the teacher.

One of the things that impressed me the most with Towns' book is that he does not focus on himself, or his own Sunday School teaching experience. Rather than speaking of himself, he refers the reader to the people from whom he learned (and applied) the skills necessary to be a strong Sunday School teacher/leader. He identifies success in others and how it applies to us. I was very impressed that Mr. Sunday School gave me his sources rather than himself. Does the word "humility" come to mind?

Two things surprised me in this book. The first is a negative; the second is a positive. First, Towns' mentions that there are a variety of learning styles, but he never expounds on them. That would fall more into the category of learning than teaching. However, it would have been nice to have a summary of this data. The second is that Towns' gives us a section on classroom discipline. This is better understood as classroom management, or classroom control, and is more often an issue with children and youth classes. Still, I was surprised that he covered the topic in this book.

Some readers may be put off by occasional advertisements for Gospel Light products. This did not bother me in the least. I can only recall two instances of this. Both were qualified - If you are not currently using an alternative product with similar features. It is almost inconsequential, but I thought I would mention it anyway.

In the final analysis, this is a very good, albeit brief, book on teaching Sunday School. It irks me fiercely to read someone say, "If you apply this book to your Sunday School class, you will grow beyond your wildest dreams." So, I won't say that. However, I must say that the application of Towns' instruction will probably help you to learn and grow as a teacher and the extent to which you learn and grow; your class should learn and grow too. I will probably get a copy of this book for all my Sunday School teachers. I think you will enjoy this book as well.

In the Teaching Godly Play: The Sunday Morning Handbook, one can get a good feel for the approach and philosophy behind this new approach to Children's Christian Formation. The visual and interactive nature of this Montessori-based cirriculum helps to break down barriers of communications and discussions between children and their "teachers". I have had wonderful experiences using the program from children as young as 4 and up to 11. The program is involved and initially fairly costly. Don't let that deter you from considering this approach. You'll never buy cirriculum again for your preK to first grade Sunday School classes.

The One You Should Have if you Only Have One! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the single best resource on Jerome Berryman's Godly Play Christian Education program. It will familiarize the reader with the concepts and philosophy behind this Montessori-based method of Christian Education. It wonderfully challenges children from 3-10 to enter the Biblical record and helps to unleash their imagination. Some of the responses I have received from children in this program are the most theologically profound and simple. It helps me to become as a little child again and trust the story of salvation anew for myself. I recommend this program highly for churches of all sizes. Don't let the initial costs scare you off--you'll never buy cirriculum again for pre K through second grade.

Great ideas for refreshing pilgrimage of a child with God 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Although this book is written by a group of educators it is one of the best books I have ever read on children's spirituality and show us with many examples how the faith community can nurture its youngest members. Children Matter emphasized relationships between people and encourages the church to welcome all children as valued participants in the people of God.
A wide range of examples from the Protestant traditions and drawing on the Bible, history and psychology to lay good foundations. The examples were excellent and evualated with strengths and weaknesses for all ages from toddler through grade school. The evidence of teaching is learning; how the children respond, the questions they ask, the attitudes they demonstrate in actual behavior and the way they use Scripture to inform their lives and decisions.

A wide ranges of examples were given from ancient times to the present. The book was exciting in the responses from the children. Anyone who works with children would find this an excellent tool, it has a great bibliography, footnotes, scripture list ---you couldn't ask for more.
It left me with a great sense of hope and urgency to give our teachers and parents great tools.

Imagine the faith journey with children as a pilgrimage or dance with God. Explore the contexts in which children live, make an informed and animated commitment to nurture a vibrant faith in your churchs youngest members. Theory and practice are interwoven ---if your church cares that children matter this is the book for you.

Editorial Review:

Children today are no longer expected to be "seen and not heard," yet in many churches children are involved only in programs designated for them. "Children Matter" offers a full discussion of children's spirituality and shows how the faith community can effectively nurture its youngest members.

Speaking from their experience with children's ministry in a range of Protestant traditions, the authors draw on the Bible, history, and psychology to lay good foundations for such ministry before discussing the specific content and contexts of faith formation. Finally, they provide wise and practical advice on putting together interesting programs without losing sight of their main purpose. Rather than focusing on innovative ways to use technology, "Children Matter" emphasizes relationships between people and encourages the church to welcome all children as valued participants in the people of God. It will challenge and refresh anyone invested in ministry with children.

A Practical Guide For Sunday School Work 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

A thorough and comprehensive look at small group work in the life of the local church. Dr. Hemphill argues that the Sunday School can be the church growth tool of the 21st century. He creatively links the three tasks of the Great Commission to the work of the Sunday School. This strategy has been successfully used by a large number of churches. This is an excellent book for all those who work in the small group ministry of the local church.

Great Book! Very comprehensive. Amazing woman. 5 out of 5 stars.

Just finished this. It's wonderful to read about this godly woman who directly impacted so many women and men--many of who served all over the world as a result of her ministry. An incredible example of leadership, of staying relavant, remaining humble, always pursuing God... Do keep in mind, however, that her wonderful sister took care of all external (household) responsibilities so that Henrietta would be free to follow God's leading in her life. (That's for all of you women who might feel a little guilty after reading it :)) Either way, this book will challenge and inspire both men and women. Highly recommend.
