Editorial Review:

In his own day the dominant personality of the Western Church, Augustine of Hippo today stands as perhaps the greatest thinker of Christian antiquity, and his Confessions is one of the great works of Western literature. In this intensely personal narrative, Augustine relates his rare ascent from a humble Algerian farm to the edge of the corridors of power at the imperial court in Milan, his struggle against the domination of his sexual nature, his renunciation of secular ambition and marriage, and the recovery of the faith his mother Monica had taught him during his childhood. Now, Henry Chadwick, an eminent scholar of early Christianity, has given us the first new English translation in thirty years of this classic spiritual journey. Chadwick renders the details of Augustine's conversion in clear, modern English. We witness the future saint's fascination with astrology and with the Manichees, and then follow him through scepticism and disillusion with pagan myths until he finally reaches Christian faith. There are brilliant philosophical musings about Platonism and the nature of God, and touching portraits of Augustine's beloved mother, of St. Ambrose of Milan, and of other early Christians like Victorinus, who gave up a distinguished career as a rhetorician to adopt the orthodox faith. Augustine's concerns are often strikingly contemporary, yet his work contains many references and allusions that are easily understood only with background information about the ancient social and intellectual setting. To make The Confessions accessible to contemporary readers, Chadwick provides the most complete and informative notes of any recent translation, and includes an introduction to establish the context. The religious and philosophical value of The Confessions is unquestionable--now modern readers will have easier access to St. Augustine's deeply personal meditations. Chadwick's lucid translation and helpful introduction clear the way for a new experience of this classic.

Rewarding reading, but not ideal for serious study. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. I just have a few minor complaints:

1. No Table of Contents. When further studying this book and comparing it with other versions of Confessions, it is very hard to find what page number the chapter you are looking for.

2. The Chapters in the book do not identify what chapter number they are. This could have helped reduce my frustration from the missing Table of Contents.

3. I would have loved an Index. The ability to find a certain concept, etc. I was searching for would have been a great addition to this book. I don't see why there wouldn't be one.

The text itself is very readable, but I find it hard to use this book for further exploration into Augustine's work. Overall, I enjoyed this book tremendously, but it'd be better to choose a different version for more in depth study.

Editorial Review:

Confessions is one of the most moving diaries ever recorded of a man's journey to the fountain of God's grace. Writing as a sinner, not a saint, Augustine shares his innermost thoughts and conversion experiences, and wrestles with the spiritual questions that have stirred the hearts of the thoughtful since time began. Starting with his childhood in Numidia, through his youth and early adulthood in Carthage, Rome, and Milan, readers will see Augustine as a human being, a fellow traveler on the road to salvation. Though staggering around potholes and roadblocks, all will find strength in Augustine's message: when the road gets rough, look to God! Previously released in 1977, this book invites readers to join Augustine in his quest that led him to be one of the most influential Christian thinkers in the history of the church.

"Excellent, but probably a bit beyond her intended audience." 4 out of 5 stars.
36 of 36 people found this review helpful.

I love Kay. She always seeks to make real-world applications. She does this so well for adults, I was curious to see how she would do with kids. In summary--not quite as well.

This book could be better described as "How to teach your kids the Bible". It has wonderful precepts and concepts, but these will be better used by adults FOR young children than BY those children.

Teens will be OK with these concepts, but I doubt a teenager would pick up a book with this cover.

If you have teenagers who are really into specific books of the bible, I would suggest (for Revelation at least) "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!".

For general bible study for teens, I think "What the Bible is all About" by H. Mears would be a better choice.

Again--Kay's precepts and concepts here are great. They are just a bit above the level of the audience for which they are directed.

Editorial Review:

Based on Kay Arthur’s bestselling How to Study Your Bible (390,000 copies sold), this easy-to-use Bible study combines a serious commitment to God’s Word with fun illustrations, games, puzzles, and activities that reinforce biblical truth. How to Study Your Bible for Kids introduces the basics of inductive Bible study-observation, interpretation, and application-to children ages 9 to 12. As they learn about the people in the Bible, the way things were done in biblical times, the amazing miracles performed, and numerous terrific adventures found in the Bible, young people will discover that God’s Word speaks to them right where they’re at. They’ll come away from this study with a deeper understanding of God’s love and care for them.

A great introductory work to the early church fathers. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

First, the introduction by C. S. Lewis is alone worth the price of this short work. Lewis argues that these works by the early church fathers are far easier to read than the commentaries of the works of the fathers. He also argues that we need to read at least one out of three books out of our century. He doesn't use the phrase "chronological snobbery," but the argument is the same. We need to read perspectives of other cultures and ages to help keep ourselves from falling into the errors of the present age.

Second, the book is not terribly difficult to read. The book is short and well organized. Some of the passages take rereadings, but the arguments for the most part are fairly straight forward and accessible. Meditating on what God did through the incarnation, the reasons for the incarnation, and its impact on our lives and history as a whole can not be a bad thing.

Editorial Review:

"This is a good translation of a very great book.

"St Athanasius stood contra mundum for the Trinitarian doctrine 'whole and undefiled,' when it looked as if all the civilized world was slipping back from Christianity into the religion of Arius, into one of those 'sensible' synthetic religions which are so strongly recommended today and which then, as now, included among their devotees many highly cultivated clergymen. The glory of St Athanasius is that he did not move with the times; it is his reward that he now remains when those times, like all others, have passed away.

"When I first opened De Incarnatione I soon discovered by a very simple test that I was reading a masterpiece, for only a mastermind could have written so deeply on such a subject with such classical simplicity"

- C. S. Lewis, from the Introduction

On the Incarnation is part of the POPULAR PATRISTIC SERIES.

Summa is supreme 5 out of 5 stars.

Probably the best sys theo work ever. Oh, that more fellow Protestants would pour over this text!

A great resource for theological research 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this Five-volume set after taking a couple of philosophy courses, which I feel like I should recommend to anyone starting to dive into this hefty text. If you don't feel like taking a class, perhaps some of the secondary texts written by philosophers about Aquinas will help in reading this fantastic set of info.
Aquinas forms his arguments in a way that is almost flawless. I am not Catholic, yet I find this to be an explanation of Catholic doctrine that makes me almost want to convert. For anyone from the atheist to the devout catholic, this text is a window into one of the greateast natural and revealed theologians to ever document his thoughts. Footnotes are aplenty to send you on your way to other documents, especially Augistine, so be prepared for an obsession.

Mike Yandell

Editorial Review:

Thomas Aquinas' best-known work is the Summa Theologica. As the title indicates, the Summa is a "summing up" of all that can be known about Christian theology.

Only buy this book if you want to be a homemaker your whole life 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Although most of what he says is Biblically founded, he takes a very chauvinistic view of women and the household. If you are content just being a homemaker and agree that women should not have jobs outside the house, or are threatened by a woman earning more money than a man, than perhaps this is the right book for you.

As for me, I'm going to use my talents and gifts in the work force as well as the home, because a true woman can handle both.

Editorial Review:

Building a strong family is a challenge in the best of times. How much more when marriage is being redefined, biblical approaches to discipline are under constant fire, and "family values" is more a campaign slogan than a personal priority of elected officials.

The family is in trouble today. Stable homes have become a quaint anomaly, rather than the norm. To check the erosion of the home and family as the basic unit of society, Jay Adams calls us to a careful understanding and application of scriptural principles.

Christians will find this volume full of practical, biblical advice on Christ-centered family living, communicating with family members, family guidance and discipline, living with an unbelieving spouse, and many other areas. Pastors, counselors, and study groups will value this work for its insight, clarity, and faithfulness to God’s Word. This best-selling title will challenge, encourage, and aid the reader in the development of a truly Christian home.

Editorial Review:

ARE YOU DISAPPOINTED THAT LIFE ISN’T TURNING OUT LIKE YOU PLANNED? HOW DO YOU RESPOND when your husband or wife tramples your emotions? When your boss fires you unexpectedly? When you lose your life’s savings? When the child you’ve loved and prayed for turns his back on you and your values? When disappointments like these smash their way into your life, you may want to scream, “How could God let this happen?”

BUT WHAT IF GOD didn’t just “let it happen”? What if the things you call disappointments are really His appointments — events He is using to make you more like Christ? What if He is using your disappointments like flames to melt and burn away the undesirable elements in your life, leaving you pure and radiant — like refined silver?

YOU CAN BE DEFEATED by life’s unavoidable disappointments, or you can become stronger because of them. Kay Arthur paints a graphic picture of the dangerous downward spiral of disappointment that can lead to discouragement, depression, or even despair. But you can learn to break that cycle and embrace disappointment with a faith that recognizes the trials of life as tools that God uses to make you — as silver refined — a reflection of His goodness.
