A must have for parents with boys! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

For every parent with boys, this book is a must read! Dr. James Dobson brilliantly discusses the challenges boys face in this world and how we as parents should deal with and handle our boys. The future of our young men is so important, and Dr. James Dobson educates the reader on how to help grow our boys into strong, respectful, spiritual men.

A must read for conservative parents 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book offers great practical and biblical advices on how to raise a boy. If you are liberal parents, you are not going to like what he says. We are conservative Christian who are determined to raise our children with the right /godly values and appropriate discipline with unconditional love. This book is what I need.

Editorial Review:

Sensible advice and caring encouragement on raising boys from the nation's most trusted parenting expert, Dr.James Dobson. With so much confusion about the role of men in our society, it's no wonder so many parents and teachers are at a loss about how to bring up boys. Our culture has vilified masculinity and, as a result, boys are suffering. Parents, teachers, and others involved in shaping the character of boys have lots of questions. In Bringing Up Boys, Dr. Dobson tackles these questions and offers advice and encouragement based on a firm foundation of biblical principles.

3 year old with a strong will 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I have a 3 year old that I have had trouble dealing with from the time she was born. She held her breath out of anger when the nurse gave her a bath and put that tiny shirt on her just one hour after birth. She cried for the first 4 months from a combination of colic and wanting to be able to do whatever she wanted to do, like walk. I thought after she learned to roll, then, sit, then crawl, then walk, etc that she would be less cranky; well that didn't happen. She continues to be fussy, demanding, and insists on getting her own way. She wants to control the people in her world. Discipline and punishment have been difficult and have yielded little results; at home and at preschool. I have suspected for some time that she is strong willed and her teacher this week, after a full week of time outs from not listening, stated she did not know what to do with my daughter. I have read Dr. Dobson's book. It has great insight into how these children think. I don't fully understand how they think because I do not think that way. Dr Dobson opened my eyes on some issues and brought to my attention the fact that my daughter seriously needs direction, before her teen years. I liked the book, but wish he had been more specific and listed more detailed ideas/tools to use when punishing/disciplining besides spanking. I am not opposed to spanking but I find most discipline, including spanking, timeouts, taking privileges away, and offering rewards, do not work for my daughter. My daughter wants to do what she wants to do and that is the bottom line for her. This book has opened the door for me into her world and I have since been researching the subject online and have ordered 2 more books to help teach me how to deal with her. All the opponents to spanking, that I have read, use inflammatory words to get their point across. I was spanked as a child. I very vaguely remember maybe one of them. What I found harmful and hurtful to me was the yelling, screaming, being put down, controlled, belittled, and being worried when I would have to endure any of those things again; not being spanked. I can understand their passion, but controlled spanking needs to be put into perspective. All children need to be punished differently according to their temperament.

Worked for me and I'm sure will work for my childre 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

My parents raised me and my 2 brothers based on the guidelines in this book. We are all now respectful, successful, and well-rounded adults. I never once feared my parents, or hated/resented them. I was only actually spanked no more than 3-4 times in my life, which proves this method works when used properly - never hitting out of anger, etc. I now thank my parents for raising me wonderfully and I only hope I can do half as good of a job with my children. They credit their parenting success to this book and Dr. James Dobson.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

Rising divorce rates inspired Dr. James Dobson, founder and president of Focus on the Family, and his wife, Shirley, to author a devotional for couples in an attempt to strengthen the marriages of younger generations. Night Light: A Devotional for Couples contains six months of daily devotions stemming from the Dobsons' 40 years of marriage experience. Beginning on Sunday, an inspirational story addresses a relevant theme, such as communication, money, forgiveness, or conflict resolution, which is expounded upon throughout the devotions for that week. Scripture, probing questions, and short anecdotes encourage intimacy between the couple in an attempt to ward off stagnation and habitual laziness in spiritual growth. While the questions and suggestions will affect every couple differently, this devotional stimulates conversation about weighty issues of the heart and turns the head toward what matters for eternity. Knowing that most couples are too exhausted by the end of the day to analyze every facet of their marriage, however, the Dobson's have crafted the devotions to be completed within 10 minutes. One would expect this to be most helpful for newlyweds, but it is a revitalizing aide for those who have had poor communication throughout their marriage or are looking to refocus their marriage on Christ. Night Light is a wonderful way to set your mind on the Lord before turning out the light and for drawing closer to your mate in the process. --Jill Heatherly

The best advice (from non-Christian) 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have lived a year with a spouse engaged in infidelity. Shock and despair have been my constant companions. All the crying, pleading, yelling, begging, and reasoning did no good at all - my spouse kept relapsing into the affair. At last he was talking of moving out and really taking up with the lover. Once I took the advice of the book, that very first week my spouse went into a tailspin and I felt much more centered and stronger. It was a week from hell for my spouse and a week where various people told me how great I looked! I have discovered that you really have to act in the opposite way that your feelings are telling you to act in this kind of a crisis. Be calm and firm in expressing your boundaries (you are free to leave or stay as you like but if you stay you cannot be in contact with the lover). Open the cage door and have backbone. You have to be willing to back it up. My process in not finished but things are looking up for the first time in a year. It has been almost a month since I took the advice and my spouse is still at home, appologised for all he has put me through and says he thinks he can resist the tempation to be in contact with the lover while he lives under the same roof with me. I read this book together with the book "Not Just Friends" by Shirley Glass which helped me to understand extramarital affairs very clearly. I strongly recommend reading both. I am not a practicing Christian and this orientation in the book is not a problem - the advice is very sound from a psychological standpoint.

Editorial Review:

You've forgiven a thousand times. You've bent over backwards to make your partner feel loved and accepted. But the only reward for your loyalty has been anger, indifference, infidelity, or abuse. Your spouse may even be ready to walk out the door.
Do you feel like all is lost? Are you ready to give up? There IS still hope.
Dr. James Dobson's "tough love" principles have proven to be uniquely valuable and effective. Unlike most approaches to marriage crisis, the strategy in this groundbreaking classic does not require the willing cooperation of both spouses. Love Must Be Tough offers the guidance that gives you the best chance of rekindling romance, renewing your relationship, and drawing your partner back into your arms.

Preparing for Adolescence 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

What parent is prepared for the roller coaster ride of adolescence when their first child starts "growing up"? I thought I wouldn't have to think about it until my child was 13! Ha! The moodiness has already started -- at 10!

I enjoyed this book by Dr. Dobson, a well known & trusted author. The book helps the parent see this phase from the child's perspective and is written in a style the child can relate to. It assists them in trying to make sense of it all. It offers the child a preview of what to expect as radical physical and emotional changes begin and suggestions of how to handle them with practical common sense and their faith. The section addressing the "facts of life" is respectful, frank and thorough, but only offers age appropriate "details". It is appropriate enough for a 10 year old.

The book cover-to-cover may not keep the attention of a 10-12 year old who is accustomed to reading "action" type books, but if they are searching for answers, it's all there. Whether you buy the book for guidance as a parent, for your child to read, or as a tool to open up discussion on these topics, it is a worthwhile purchase.

Editorial Review:

In this 8 tape package with guidelines for parents on what to expect and what to say, Dr. Dobson's candid, friendly discussions spoken directly to teens.

this book is a significant help in my counseling of women. Women are very emotionally scarred by events in their lives they do not understand. I have read many, many books on psychology and a few on sociology and this one stands well above the rest with wisdom and insight. Dr. Dobson's love for the hurting people, both men and women, pours out from page after page. This is a book to buy two of, there is always someone who will need it's spectacular grasp of hope. I encourage you to buy two and keep loaning one out for those in need, and there will most definitely be a time when you need your copy.

Lack of Research 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 10 people found this review helpful.

My mother purchased this book for my husband and I as a gift when we were expecting our first child. We have used many Focus resources in the past and intend to use their discipline approach for our children. However, this book was extremely disappointing.

Instead of giving a thorough perspective on recent issues, they give sketchy summaries and little research to back up their conclusions.

For example, the book only gives a 2 sentence definition of the Bradley Birth Method in which it even describes at as "anti intervention". My Husband and I attended Bradley classes and never heard any such information taught.

Another, and by far the worst example, is their discussion of vaccines. Not only do they skip the most severe side effects from vaccines such as the MMR, but without giving any research they draw conclusion discrediting anyone who is pro selective inoculation citing examples such as "heard immunity" which has been discredited in the micro-biological area for the past decade.

Yet another example of their lack of research comes with the explanations of ultrasound testing during pregnancy. Focus gives the basic definition of what it is and explains that there have been no tests to suggest it is dangerous. However, according to the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health "routine ultrasound testing during pregnancy has not been sufficiently evaluated to go unquestioned" and according to the FDA "prenatal ultrasounds can't be considered completely innocuous,". Finally according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists "casual use of ultrasound during pregnancy should be avoided." With this many health organizations cautioning against ultrasound, and with documented research suggesting possible dangers, such a conclusion by Focus is very hap-hazard.

Furthermore, the book even presents an inaccurate definition of homoeopathic medicine and draws the conclusion that it is non-main stream and effectiveness is questionable. As a pregnant woman, I find nothing more reassuring then when my midwife can offer me a dietary supplement to cure whatever is ailing me.

Finally, and most insulting of all, the book completely attacks the use of home birth and states that it is a "selfish decision made for convenience" and recommends that people considering it go to a hospital birthcenter instead. My husband and I live in Phoenix, AZ where the last birthcenter closed its doors over a year ago. Our only options for a safe and healthy natural birth are to either argue with the hospital staff for 15 hours in labour or have a trained specialist assist with a home birth!

In conclusion, my husband and I will continue trusting Focus for advice on spiritual and relational issues, but when it comes to medical advice we'll stick with our midwife and the Sears Family Library of books.
