The only spiritual book you'll ever need. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Emmet Fox once paid Florence Scoville Schinn (see "The Game of Life and How to Play It") a great compliment by writing that her works were accessible even to those who did not wish to devote their attention to deeper study. I believe that's true also of "The Sermon on the Mount."

For Christians seeking deeper faith and understanding without committing years to reading the Bible, attending weekly church services, or joining a Bible study group, try this book. Since I was little, I've felt strongly that Jesus is my link to joy and knowing. I've been drawn to the Book of Matthew as the story of Jesus that most resonates with me, and to the Sermon on the Mount as the essence of the teachings of Jesus.

Fox's treatment of the Sermon on the Mount, section by section, provides the key to understanding the entire Bible. It's easy to read and, more importantly, every paragraph and every sentence stands alone as a complete message about what's facing me today.

For those of a metaphysical bent, you can hardly find a more complete, more accurate, simpler statement of truth. My dowsing rates this book higher on the Hawkins scale than any book I've ever encountered.

For those emersed in "A Course in Miracles," Fox has written the pocket version - easy to carry and study - and the perfect introduction to those with whom we'd like to share The Course.

For those working the twelve steps, know that Fox's writings inspired Bill Wilson. Read "The Sermon on the Mount" as a loving companion to the Big Book.

You can read other books by Fox if you'd like, or other great works by other inspired spiritual writers, but you only NEED this one.

Editorial Review:

Fresh with contemporary relevance, this classic of positive thinking from one of the world's great motivational writers offers galvanizing insights on self-transformation. Based on Emmet Fox's simple message that "thoughts are things" and all potential lies in their creative and constructive use, these thirty-one inspiring essays how to have it all -- health, healing, happiness, and a liberated spirit -- through the power of constructive though. First published in 1940, Power Through Constructive Thinking has been a never-failing source of strength and renewal for generations of readers.

Editorial Review:

Fifteen years ago, Robert Fulghum published a simple credo—a credo that became the phenomenal #1 New York Times bestseller All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Now, seven million copies later, Fulghum returns to the book that was embraced around the world. He has written a new preface and twenty-five essays, which add even more potency to a common, though no less relevant, piece of wisdom: that the most basic aspects of life bear its most important opportunities.

Here Fulghum engages us with musings on life, death, love, pain, joy, sorrow, and the best chicken-fried steak in the continental U.S.A. The little seed in the Styrofoam cup offers a reminder about our own mortality and the delicate nature of life . . . a spider who catches (and loses) a full-grown woman in its web one fine morning teaches us about surviving catastrophe . . . the love story of Jean-Francois Pilatre and his hot air balloon reminds us to be brave and unafraid to “fly” . . . life lessons hidden in the laundry pile . . . magical qualities found in a box of crayons . . . hide-and-seek vs. sardines—and how these games relate to the nature of God. All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten is brimming with the very stuff of life and the significance found in the smallest details.

In the years that have passed since the first publication of this book that touched so many with its simple, profound wisdom, Robert Fulghum has had some time to ponder, to reevaluate, and to reconsider. And here are those fresh thoughts on classic topics, right alongside the wonderful new essays.

Perhaps in today’s chaotic, more challenging world, these essays on life will resonate even deeper—as readers discover how universal insights can be found in ordinary events.

Excellent Challenge for Those Who Want a Deeper Spiritual Walk With God 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"The Spirit of the Disciplines" focuses on the various disciplines that God uses to change people's lives. The book contains 11 chapters and 2 appendix for a total of around 265 pages.

Each of the 11 chapters addresses a particular theme. Chapter 9, addressing the specific disciplines, is my personal favorite. According to Willard in Chapter 9, the disciplines are separated into 2 groups:

1. Abstinence - This group consists of actions that helps us from becoming too involved in the world so we may better focus on God instead of the things of this world. The disciplines included here are: solitude, silence, fasting, frugality, chastity, secrecy, and sacrifice. Willard's comments on solitude and silence were particularly insightful (solitude can help us in resisting conformity to this world).
2. Engagement - This group consists of actions we can do to serve others in this world so as to not become so isolated that we render ourselves useless to be used by God for His glory. Disciplines included here are: study, worship, celebration, service, prayer, fellowship, confession, and submission.

Other chapters (such as 11) address issues such as: can a Christian be financially and spiritually successful at the same time?

Willard will definitely challenge you to think and pay attention as you read, so be forewarned - this is not a light read!

Read, enjoy, and be challenged and encouraged! Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

How to Live as Jesus Lived

Dallas Willard, one of today's most brilliant Christian thinkers and author of The Divine Conspiracy (Christianity Today's 1999 Book of the Year), presents a way of living that enables ordinary men and women to enjoy the fruit of the Christian life. He reveals how the key to self-transformation resides in the practice of the spiritual disciplines, and how their practice affirms human life to the fullest. The Spirit of the Disciplines is for everyone who strives to be a disciple of Jesus in thought and action as well as intention.

Wonderful Daily Meditation Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book has helped me so much over the past 10 years and I just purchased these for friends of mine who are just beginning their spiritual journeys. It is an easy to read daily meditation book with wonderful insights that will grow and stick with you through the years.

Good for the mind, but not the soul 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you've read Emmett Fox's interpretation of "The Sermon on the Mount," you know that he sees the bible as a series metaphors and poetry, as well as an account of the life of Jesus Christ. No problem. But if you're in need of a daily spiritual word, this is not the book for you. His daily readings are very much geared toward the intellect and not the emotional or spiritual. I kept it on my bedside table and read the daily entry for about two weeks until I realized I was thinking too much. Try "God Calling" for daily, concise inspiration. This is more intellectual self-help with a slash of the Spirit.

Editorial Review:

Here in this collection of 365 daily meditations lives the essence of a great spiritual teacher -- one who truly understood the wellspring of life. The keen insights I captured here speak as freshly to the everyday needs of humanity as they did the day Fox first wrote them.

Culled from Fox's published and unpublished lecture notes and manuscripts, this guide for daily living also includes much-loved passages, from Sermon on the Mount, Fox's million-copy bestseller, along with the popular Power Through Constructive Thinking.

Spiritual Growth for Normal People 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was skeptical about starting this book, because most of the saints' writings I have read have been very theological or spiritual in nature, basically above my head. This one is practical and easy to follow. It makes sense for an everyday person who is just trying to grow closer to God. It applies to each individual no matter what your vocation or job and is specifically directed at those who are NOT priests or religious (although they probably would benefit, as well). This is a classic! A winner that will be read and re-read for years to come!

Editorial Review:

Francis de Sales’s Introduction to the Devout Life has remained a uniquely accessible and relevant treasure of devotion for nearly four hundred years. As Bishop of Geneva in the first quarter of the sevenjteenth century, Francis de Sales saw to the spiritual needs of everyone from the poorest peasants to court ladies. The desire to be closer to God that he found in people from all levels of society led him to compile these instructions on how to live in Christ. Francis’s compassionate Introduction leads the reader through practical ways of attaining a devout life without renouncing the world and offers prayers and meditations to strengthen devotion in the face of temptation and hardship.

Editorial Review:

It’s been over ten years since Robert Fulghum has published a book of his essays, but he is back and in fine form with What on Earth Have I Done?, encouraging listeners to slow down and pay attention to the miracles, sometimes hilarious and sometimes serious, that can be found around us: trick-or-treating with your grandchildren dressed like a large rabbit, pots of daffodils in mid-November, a view of the earth from outer space, the mysterious night sounds of the desert, and the friendship one can strike up with someone who doesn’t share the same language.  Fulghum shows us that life’s big questions—“What have I done with my life?,” “How do I see myself?,” “How do others see me?,” “What will I be doing next?”—are best answered by appreciating  the people in our communities, the members of our family, the world around us and our place in the  solar system.  What on Earth Have I Done? is classic Fulghum that shows us the wonder of everyday living with two feet planted firmly on the earth, one eye on the heavens and, at times, a tongue planted firmly in cheek.

All of the below & more!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

To me - Emmet's "Power Through Constructive Thinking" is the foundation stone of all his powerful, inspiring & motivational books.

This one outlines in detail & comprehensively the technique for turning your thought processes into power to achieve peace, prosperity, health & happiness.

The process is easy & logical as soon as you see it. He uses Bible tracts to expand his ideas & show that this is nothing new. Mental science & the power of the mind has been around & recognised for thousands of years. Some successful people take the idea for granted & may not even realise they're using this system.

Despite the books age & the period from which it came, Emmet writes clearly & with fluidity that makes you want to carry on & finish the next chapter.

If you can just hold his ideas in place, remember them (write them down if need be) & daily put them into practice, you'll see your success's grow from day to day, followed health, happiness, prosperity & peace. All of which is nothing more than we're all clambering for - isn't it?

This is a delightful little volume of letters written by Francois de Salignac de La Mothe Fenelon, a 17th Century Archbishop of Cambrai. The letters have been updated from previous translations and are presented in a small volume that can handily be tucked into bag or basket for ease of use. Having read some of Fenelon's writings in an earlier collection of meditations, Let Go helps the reader draw closer to this spiritual guide whose teachings are timeless and whose thoughts are such an inspiration.

Editorial Review:

A collection of spiritual letters written by Francois Fenelon, a Catholic bishop, to various persons to whom he was a spiritual advisor. Over 300 years later, his spiritual insights in these letters continue to inspire, challenge and bless Christians: Catholic, Protestant, and Evangelical alike.

Short, sweet and accessible nuggets of spiritual wisdom 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Emmet Fox is inspirational, earthy and straight-to-the-point. He won't coddle you or support emotional self-pity; but he'll offer succinct, elegant direction on whatever spiritually ails ya. Kind of like a straight-shootin' Anglo version of Norman Vincent Peale. One of the first-ever New Agers to hit the circuit, he culled the cream and poured it on these pages for everyone's benefit. Thanks, Emmet!

A must read for all Christians 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

First up, a little about me, the reader! If I do a BeleifoMatic quiz I come up as "100% Mainline Conservative Protestant", so that's the position from which I read this book. The main message that I took from this book is that the churches have and are focusing (particularly the Evangelical ones) solely on justification to the detriment of sanctification. Where sanctification is focused on it is seen as a negative exercise (i.e., pursuit of a mortified body rather than a resurrected one). So many churches are very keen to "get" people saved, but are weak on what it means to thereafter "be" saved on a day to day life basis.
Fox corrects this, showing that the biblical vision of salvation is that we are saved for sanctification and that sanctification involves becoming an integral part of God's solution for a creation that, altough fallen, is still one sustained through His presence within it. Seeing God as being present in creation as well as transcending was something great that reading this book enabled me to do. So why only 4 stars?
Well, the book is a product of its times and regardless of the wonderful content, the form is one of 70s new age narrative. Sometimes reading between the lines is needed to see that what is being said has relevance beyond this context. Also, whilst Fox has some profound and thought provoking insights from a biblical perspective on issues such as original sin, in other areas he lacks the same incisiveness (e.g., sexuality), so that what he has to say might be appealing, but not wholly convincing. Still, this book is in my top 10 of Christian books, and I have read a lot!

Editorial Review:

Here is a reissue of the critically acclaimed bestseller, named one of the "20 books that changed the world" in New Age Journal's Annual Source Book for 1995. Maverick theologian Matthew Fox provides a daring view of historical Christianity and a theologically sound basis for personal discovery of spiritual liberation.

In this revolutionary work, Fox shows how Christianity once celebrated beauty, compassion, justice, and provided a path of positive knowledge and ecstatic connection with all creation.
