Unger's Intricate Piece of Work 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 30 people found this review helpful.

With an excellent array of notes explaining his decisions in translating the thirty-one chapters of Book One of Irenaes's Against the Heresies, Unger has produced an admirable and accessible scholarly edition. Any translation is simultaneously an interpretation, and Unger has elucidated his choices in a minute and clear manner. Moreover, his introduction is quite helpful in setting the scene regarding Irenaeus's audience, style, and purpose.

This Is Only the First Book 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

St. Irenaeus wrote five volumes of Against the Heresies. This is only book one. If you're looking for anything in subsequent volumes (I was looking for material in book 3, for example), you won't get it in this volume. St. Ireneaus is cogent, clear, and brilliant, of course. Just be forewarned that this isn't the entire work.

Editorial Review:

This work, which establishes Irenaeus as the most important of the theologians of the second century, is a detailed and effective refutation of Gnosticism, and a major source of information on the various Gnostic sects and doctrines.

Editorial Review:

St. Ignatius of Loyola wrote the Spiritual Exercises between 1522 and 1524, and today, nearly five centuries later, Jesuits in training are still required to study it and follow its precepts during their first year in the novitiate. Not designed to be read cover to cover in one sitting, this book is made up of daily meditations meant to be closely examined in isolation over a period of about four weeks, under the guidance of a spiritual director. Though The Spiritual Exercises have traditionally been read primarily by those training for the priesthood, in recent years increasing numbers of lay people and non-Catholics are discovering its joys and insights. This edition-edited by Father Elder Mullan (1865-1925) and published in 1914-is essential for anyone interested in strengthening his or her faith and relationship with God. Spanish priest and spiritual philosopher SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA (1491-1556) has been described by Pope Benedict XVI as "a man of God," "a man of profound prayer," and "a faithful servant of the Church." The principal founder of the Society of Jesus, Ignatius was canonized in 1622. His writings include Letters and Instructions of St. Ignatius Loyola 1 (1524-1547).

Self-Taught Version 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola outlines the Church's classic means of orienting one's soul toward God and eternal salvation. If you are to buy one of these books and will be reading it on your own and not attend a retreat. Then this is the version you want to buy. It is truly a self-taught edition. This book will make you stop and examine your life and will help head you to Heaven and away from Hell. Which is what we would expect from the man who founded the Society of Jesus.

DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION. IT IS AN ADULTERATED TEXT. 1 out of 5 stars.

.

This edition SHOULD NOT bear Loyola's name. It is an intellectually inept hybrid of Loyola's text and its 'interpretation'-not stated as such-by some unnamed 'editor'. In other words, this is a REWRITING of Loyola claiming to be his text. The intellectual dishonesty is astounding. In it, we find for instance the following comment: "...--a prince wiser than Charlemaigne, more pious than St. Louis, more fortunate in war than Bonaparte in the days of his gretest prosperity;--"

Bonaparte?

Loyola died nearly two hundred years before Napoleon's death, yet SOMEONE is presenting these as his own words. It is simple enough to realise that this particular example has been added in, but what additions, elaborations, and 'interpretations' have been grafted in that are not so obvious? Whose ideas am I reading? Nowhere in this edition is it stated that the text has been tampered with, nor is there any indication of who has done the tampering. Loyola's name is the only one to appear anywhere. Is this representative of the state of theological scholarship? In no other realm of serious intellectual enquiry would such unethical and irresponsible manipulation of canonical texts be allowed to stand. Loyola is probably well worth reading, but having bought this edition, I'm in no position to say. Find a reputable publisher with some kind of scruples, put together and edited by someone at least honest enough to put their name on the book.

A noble man and a well told story 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

There are few old classic stories like the one of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. In this book we find an understandable story that fully explores all the parts that made this man special. His gifts and even his flaws are expossed but in the end, you will find great inspiraton and love for this human saint who walked so among us and did so much to influence our education system and the church policies.

I like the way the author wrote the story. I could identify with the journey that Ignatius took with his life. A worthy book to read for life inspiration. A man with much to admire. Highly recommended!

Ignatius 5 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I did not know anything about Ignatius of Loyola except that he started the Society of Jesus. The Translators Notes are wonderful. In the beginning of each section I read the TN first and then the autobiography. This book will give you a good idea on his conversion and how he started the Society of Jesus. It is interesting to read about a saint's life at the time of so called reformation.

Execllent treatise by Irenaeus 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 26 people found this review helpful.

This is a work by Irenaeus that wasn't discovered until fairly recently, so it is not included in the excellent 10 volume Ante-Nicene Fathers set. The work is essentially a summary of the Christian faith by the Bishop Irenaeus (lived around 177 AD). The work 'recounts all the various deeds of God culminated in Jesus Christ.' It, unlike the works of Justin and Athenagoras from the same period, is non-polemical and non-apologetic. There are quite a few notes, a nice introduction, and some Greek words provided in the text when the English translation provided is uncertain.

Irenaeus' summery of the Christian faith 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

"On the Apostolic Preaching" is a recently discovered work of Irenaeus, a second century theologian. Irenaeus is better known for his attacks on Gnosticism but he still has time to write a summery of the Christian faith for his friend Marcianus.

In his book, Irenaeus presents the faith chronologically, from the creation of the world to the death of Christ. He masterfully interprets the Old Testament to show that Christ is the focus and the culmination of the Old Testament. When he does this, he is also attempting to refute a common Gnostic belief that the old bloodthirsty God of the Old Testament was a completely different creature from new gentle God of the New Testament.

He continues and finds support in the Old Testament for nearly every aspect of Christ and for the actions of the Apostles. This book also contains one of the earliest explanations of the Trinity which is interesting to see how it compares to modern understanding on the subject.

This book is a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a second century theologian and an interesting read.

Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius 5 out of 5 stars.

Book was very interesting when I reviewed it. Need more time to get more into it.

clear language 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is much easier to understand than the other version of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius that I had previously read. The other version was written in such a convoluted manner that I had "translated" the rules of discernment into language that made sense to me. Thankfully, I had studied that previous version in a class with a very wise and learned person, who went to great pains to clarify the meanings. This version reminds me of the Rules of Discernment "water into a sponge" simile. It's easy to absorb and needs no explanation. I look forward to sharing it with my instructor. Peace.

Editorial Review:

A reissue of a classic of the Christian text from the founder of the Jesuit Order.

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyla is the core work of religious formation for members of the Society of Jesus, the single largest religious order within the Roman Catholic Church. For four and a half centuries  in many thousands of editions in all languages, The Exercises have embodied fundamental spiritual principles essential to authentic Christian living.

The mystical insight informing Ignatius's own relationship with God--which he distilled in The Exercises--is that the divine love of God is providentially present in all the details of our existence. Here Ignatius shows how the faithful can be joined to God in all things, according to the Jesuit motto, Ad majorem Dei gloriam, "For the greater glory of God."

Spiritual Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Saint Ignatius was a Basque military officer from Loyola, a great saint, and the founder of one of the most influential religious orders in world history: the Society of Jesus(the Jesuits). His personal writings reveal a truly gentle, emotional man who gave up all the pleasures of nobility to become a poor, wretched pilgrim for the sake of Christ. His Reminisces recounts all the main events of his life, from his bravery in the battle that left him crippled for life, to his conversion in his recovery bed, and finally to his founding of the Jesuit order. His journal reveals his spirituality and describes his mystical experiences, his letters reveal his patience, wisdom, and kindness, and his tremendously popular Spiritual Exercises gives advice on how to dedicate your life to God and see His action all around you. Ignatius's writings resonate with the tender devotion and the firmness of purpose found only in the writings of the Saints. Reading this book, one can see the guiding hand of Providence in the life of Ignatius and in the history of the Church, a hand that can use even the worst sinner to bring a shattered world back to His Son.

Editorial Review:

One of the key figures in Christian history, St. Ignatius of Loyola (c. 1491 1556) was a passionate and unique spiritual thinker and visionary. The works gathered here provide a first-hand, personal introduction to this remarkable character: a man who turned away from the Spanish nobility to create the revolutionary Jesuit Order, inspired by the desire to help people follow Christ. His Reminiscences describe his early life, his religious conversion following near-paralysis in battle, and his spiritual and physical ordeals as he struggled to assist those in need, including plague, persecution and imprisonment. The Spiritual Exercises offer guidelines to those seeking the will of God, and the Spiritual Diary shows Ignatius in daily mystical contact with God during a personal strugg;e. The Letters collected here provide an insight into Ignatius' ceaseless campaign to assist those seeking enlightenment and to direct the young Society of Jesus.

More than priceless! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The full text of all the citations in the Catechism (except those in the Bible and those quoted in full) for *all* the footnotes in the Catechism in one volume is a remarkable achievement.

Another reviewer felt that one shortcoming was that sources quoted in full in the Catechism were not repeated here. Well, yes, that might be a problem for some, but then this book is not intended to be used alone. This is a straight footnote lookup from the Catechism.

Here you have a chance to trace the thoughts of those who wrote the Catechism. It is more than merely helpful or even enlightening. It opens the door to many wonderful works, including some which are hard to find in English.

The paper used is quite heavy for a book this size (980 pages) making it quite thick. The binding, even though it is paperback, is first-rate. This book is made to be used and to last.

In addition to this book and, of course the Catechism, please take a look at "Introduction to the Catechism" by Cardinal Ratzinger (Now Pope Benedict XVI). The new "Compendium of the Catechism" released in April 2006 by the USCCB, is a superb work as well.

If you are serious about your Catholic faith and want to learn more, this will certainly help.

Editorial Review:

"One of the first great events in Christian history was the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, convened to organize Christian sects and beliefs into a unified doctrine. The great Christian clergymen who wrote before this famous event are referred to as the Ante-Nicenes and the Apostolic Fathers, and their writings are collected here in a ten-volume set. The Ante-Nicenes lived so close to the time of Christ that their interpretations of the New Testament are considered more authentic than modern voices. But they are also real and flawed men, who are more like their fellow Christians than they are like the Apostles, making their words echo in the ears of spiritual seekers. In Volume I of the 10-volume collected works of the Ante-Nicenes first published between 1885 and 1896, readers will find the writings of: Rome, the fourth pope, who was supposedly martyred by being tied to an anchor and tossed overboard n anonymous writer considered the first Christian apologist Christian bishop who was stabbed to death after he failed to burn at the stake student of John the Apostle, who was Bishop of Antioch before he was killed n anonymous writer given the name of Saint Barnabas hor of Interpretations of the Sayings of the Lord, a textbook on quotes from Jesus yr, a Christian apologist and accomplished philosopher, and isciple of Polycarp, apologist, and bishop of Lugdunum."

Editorial Review:

They further maintain that the passion which took place in the case of the twelfth AEon is pointed at by the apostasy of Judas, who was the twelfth apostle, and also by the fact that Christ suffered in the twelfth month. For their opinion is, that He continued to preach for one year only after His baptism. The same thing is also most clearly indicated by the case of the woman who suffered from an issue of blood.
