Editorial Review:

Piloting his 747, Rayford Steele is musing about his wife Irene's irritating religiosity and contemplating the charms of his "drop-dead gorgeous" flight attendant, Hattie. First Irene was into Amway, then Tupperware, and now it's the Rapture of the Saints--the scary last story in the Bible in which Christians are swept to heaven and unbelievers are left behind to endure the Antichrist's Tribulation. Steele believes he'll put the plane on autopilot and go visit Hattie. But Hattie's in a panic: some of the passengers have disappeared! The Rapture has happened, abruptly driverless cars are crashing all over, and the slick, sinister Romanian Nicolae Carpathia plans to use the UN to establish one world government and religion. Resembling "a young Robert Redford" and silver-tongued in nine languages, Carpathia is named People's "Sexiest Man Alive." (This reviewer, a former People writer, finds this plot twist plausible.) Meanwhile, Steele teams up with Buck Williams, a buck-the-system newshound, to form the Tribulation Force, an underground of left-behind penitents battling the Antichrist.

Ex-presidential candidate Pat Robertson briefly outsold Michael Crichton with his apocalypse novel The End of the Age (now available on audiocassette), and the similar The Third Millennium sells well, but the Left Behind series is the absolute champion in the race to make the Book of Revelation into racy thriller reading. --Tim Appelo

Editorial Review:

An anthology of Advent readings collected from the writings and sermons of 22 classic and contemporary theologians and Bible teachers.

Between purchasing presents and planning travel, enjoying holiday pageants and attending parties, it is all too easy for Christmas to silence the sacredness and crowd out a quiet anticipation of the season’s truths. So when editor Nancy Guthrie decided she wanted a reflective book of Advent readings that would help her pause and consider the riches of Christ come to earth, she embarked on what she calls “a sacred adventure,” putting together such a collection herself.

The result—this special volume—draws from the works and sermons of classic theologians such as Whitefield, Luther, Spurgeon, and Augustine, and from leading contemporary communicators such as John Piper, J. Ligon Duncan, Randy Alcorn, John MacArthur, Francis Schaeffer, R. C. Sproul, Skip Ryan, and Joni Eareckson Tada to beckon you and your family into the wonder of Jesus’ incarnation and birth.

With its high view of Scripture and its focus on the gift of Jesus, this lovely book is sure to ready your heart and mind for a fresh experience of “Immanuel, God with us” this and every Advent season. Open the cover and discover what Christmas was meant to be…

disappointed... 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I eagerly awaited every book in the "Left Behind" series, and read every one on the edge of my seat. The final installation, "Kingdom Come", left me disappointed. The book was boring, and the end was hurried. I don't feel like it was even written by the same authors or part of the same story as the rest of the series. I expected it to be as thrilling and climactic as th others, but was let down.

Thiller, Biblically based 4 out of 5 stars.

This is the last book in the Left Behind series of books. It is really well written and is a great read. All the books in the series except The Glorious Appearing (the next to the last book in the series) and this one I would give a five star rating. Something happens in the book before these two that I didn't like. So the rating is purely subjective. Actually all the books are great and each one is more thilling and more frightening than the next.

Editorial Review:

The horrors of the Tribulation are over, and Jesus Christ has set up his perfect kingdom on earth. Believers all around the world enjoy a newly perfected relationship with their Lord, and the earth itself is transformed. Yet evil still lurks in the hearts of the unbelieving. As the Millennium draws to a close, the final generation of the unrepentant prepares to mount a new offensive against the Lord Himself--sparking the final and ultimate conflict from which only one side will emerge the eternal victor.

Not much is new 2 out of 5 stars.

Please understand, I've read all of Ms. Lewis' books and enjoyed greatly her peek into Amish life, however, this one (as well as THE PARTING), is crawling at a pace that is painful. I was over half way through and nothing had happened! Just a retelling of the same information over and over. Now I realize that a factor in Amish life is the pace, but when writing fiction, the author has an obligation to keep his or her reader awake. I'm beginning to wonder if she has said all there is to say about Amish life and as a result, the repetition in succeeding books is just inevitable. I realize the splits in the church are a factor she hasn't touched on before but at this point the subject is just not engaging my interest and I feel like I've read it all before. I will concede that she must be going somewhere with all this but right now, this series is wearing me out and I'm not sure I'm motivated to read the rest of the Nellie Fisher books.

Editorial Review:

New York Times best-selling author's continuing tale of a courting couple and the separation of families during an Amish split in Lancaster County. The Courtship of Nellie Fisher book 2.

Left Behind Series #11 5 out of 5 stars.

With this book I now have the complete set. The book arrived in great condition and in a timely manner. No problems and a good deal.

LaHaye/Jenkins do it again. 4 out of 5 stars.

The eleventh book in the best-selling Left Behind series doesn't disappoint. Whit Christ's return eagerly awaited, Tribulation Force member face the greatest trials thus far in the tribulation. In this book, we see major changes in the main characters. It is difficult to say who will survive until the Glorious Appearing. As the Antichrist's armies mass on the plains of Meggido, the tension is as finger-biting level.
I enjoyed this book. It is easy to see that the end of the series approaches by how the characters are developed. I was sad to see some of my favorites not make it to the end. I did find at least one character, Leah, left hanging. Her story line has carried through the last few books, but disappeared early on in this one. The overall level of violence compels me to remind parents this is not a book for children or even younger teens. Some scenes are very graphic. Overall, I think "Armegeddon" is an excellent piece of fiction, with Biblical lessons we all can benfit from.

Editorial Review:

The scattered Tribulation Force is drawn inexorably toward the Middle East, as are all the armies of the world, when human history culminates in the battle of the ages. During the last year of the Great Tribulation, safe houses are no longer safe, and the cast of characters dramatically changes. By the time of the war of the great day of God the Almighty, the globe has become a powder keg of danger. Except those already in Petra, everyone has been forced to relocate as Antichrist ratchets up the pressure in the world's most treacherous game. Who will be left standing when the battle leaves the Tribulation Force on the brink of the end of time and the Glorious Appearing?

Classic Perceptive Lewis 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is actually a collection of essays. Lewis addresses various things such as, the glory of man as being a reflection of the glory of God, why he is not a pacifist (where he gives some pretty strong moral, biblical, and sensible arguments), speaking in tongues and various spiritual gifts (moreso on their implication, not on the technicality of each or what exactly each gift is), what he calls "is theology poetry" (or in other words, do we believe in theology just because the idea of a cosmic drama appeals to us), the affects of peer pressure and the gradual degradation of one's inner principles and also its positive affects when one surrounds him/herself with Christians, and forgiveness.

Overall a very enlightening read, in which many issues that are not commonly talked about are given attention. Not very long either, but packed full of insight.

Editorial Review:

Selected from sermons delivered by C. S. Lewis during World War II, these nine addresses offer guidance and inspiration in a time of great doubt. These are ardent and lucid sermons that provide a compassionate vision of Christianity.

Traveling Light 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is the best book I have read. It deals with the common burdens of life and how to hand them over to God. I thought it was so good I bought the large print book as well for my Grandfather to read.

Editorial Review:

From beloved award-winning author Max Lucado comes Traveling Light, refreshing words wrapped around the biblical passages of the 23rd Psalm to reenergize weary spiritual travelers. In his inimitable, pastoral voice that both soothes and exhorts, Lucado gently unpacks the verses of the psalm while helping readers lay down the burdens of doubt, anxiety, perfectionism, and fear. "You can't enjoy a journey carrying so much stuff," Lucado writes. "Why don't you just drop all that luggage?" Lucado mixes personal transparency with his trademark humor, offering uncomplicated counsel. Change your focus. Make time for rest. Know you are not alone. Be humble. Trust God. It's only when we set down our "luggage" and let God carry it for us, says Lucado, that we are free to share grace, offer comfort, and help lift the load of others. As you read Lucado's words and work through the study questions, you'll find your own load feeling a little lighter. --Cindy Crosby

Editorial Review:

Antichrist. The very word send shivers through us. And Nicolae Carpathia certainly does not disappoint as Antichrist. Nicolae is the third book in Left Behind series written by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, and is preceded by book one, Left Behind, and book two, Tribulation Force.

Nicolae Carpathia becomes the focus as he continues to consolidate his power, unifying political states ("Global Community"), media ("Global Community Network," "Global Weekly"), and religions ("Enigma Babylon One World Faith") under a Nicolae-appointed supreme pontiff. Nicolae himself is grand potentate of the global community.

Our heroes, pilot Rayford Steele and journalist Buck Williams, along with the rest of the Tribulation Force, continue their struggle to survive and protect their families in the midst of global war and destruction. They have come to recognize Nicolae Carpathia to be the Antichrist prophesied in the Bible, and to them it comes as no great revelation that this man, who presented himself as a charming and benevolent leader, has been unmasked as a ruthless and cruel tyrant, manipulating people and events to serve his own ends. And his ends are undoubtedly evil.

It becomes apparent that the chaos and turmoil created by Nicolae are the fulfillment of John's prophesy of the seven seals as recorded in the book of Revelation. And it becomes also apparent they are now facing the sixth seal, a great earthquake which is sometimes called "the wrath of the lamb." This upheaval of the earth, with its accompanying death and destruction, is familiar apocalyptic imagery: a blood-red moon, a sun turned black, and the stars falling from the sky. And the Tribulation Force discovers that these incredible descriptions turn out to be not so very far from the truth.

Who survives? How? What does Nicolae have in mind for the world? Readers of the first two books should not be disappointed with this third installment to this chilling tale.

A slow read... 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

LaHaye and Jenkins' fourth book in the series, again offers a slow and winding ride to the Glorious Appearing of Christ. Though not as slow as Nicolae, it's still in the early stages to know if it's going to get better. Though I'm now 1/3 of the way to the end of the series, I have a sneaking suspicion they probably could've condensed it into seven books instead of twelve.

I'm a Catholic and I love stories from the bible and am very interested in the Book of Revelations, so I had high hopes for this going in, but I feel like I'm going to end up with a 'meh' feeling at the end. Instead of increasing the urgency of the times, the authors take every chance they get to preach the word to every new person they meet. Okay, we get the point, accept Christ into your hearts or you won't be accepted into heaven.

I don't mean to seem blase about the whole thing, but you want people to be entertained as well. The authors dispense with the obvious thrill aspect and fill it with boring exposition. Example: A quarter of the world just died...DIED. The horrors around them should be horrendous, the stench should be overwhelming. I wanted to feel that apocalyptic sense of urgency and yet it was played off like a day at the doctor's waiting room and "let's read the bible some more."

It could've played out like a thrilling Christian movie on a grand scale, not a 17-hour sermon.

Editorial Review:

Having survived the wrath of the Lamb--a global earthquake in the 21st month of the Tribulation--pilot Rayford Steele and reporter Buck Williams now embark on a journey of absorbing adventure and Christian triumph. Soul Harvest is book four in the enormously popular Left Behind series (seven books are planned in all), based on those who are left behind in the Rapture. Written with the same gripping pace of Tom Clancy and John Grisham (film rights have already been sold for the first two books), the authors take us to Iraq, America, underground shelters, and the bottom of the Tigris river as Steele and Williams search for loved ones. Meanwhile, biblical prophecies are fulfilled at every turn, including the great soul harvest. For many Christian followers, this series has become a tangible and thrilling testament to the Book of Revelations. --Gail Hudson
