Sigh! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have no qaulms about admitting that I am a hopeless romantic. I'm also the type of person that likes pretty landscapes, good old fashioned values, and all the light and love inbetween. These books really hit the spot, and the first few of this collection are divine.

The story begins with two unlucky partners who wed for convenience: a pregnant widow and a widower trying to raise a daughter on his own. They're out in the plains struggling to survive, so why not get married for the security?

But alas, in comes the romance and this little family grows closer and closer.

The series continues as the family grows, with a variety of well-rounded characters and plots that get at that slightly dramatic spot I can't help but love.

They're quietly written with beautiful, simple descriptions and lots of reference to God, faith, and spirituality.

Editorial Review:

The first series from the pen of Janette Oke, follows the lives of one family through three generations. Lets the reader see the impact that Christian love has on relationships despite adversity and hardship.

Marty's Wardrobe 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It had been a while since I read a book, so I decided to try reading Love's Abiding Joy since I had already read the first three books in the series. Well, I'm on chapter eight, and may decide to go ahead and finish it, but it's not been as good as I hoped. It begins with the author assuring the reader that Marty still feels as young at fourty-two as she did at thirty -- and Clark is still cute with grey hair. Trust Hollywood and a shallow American mind to make us concerned that the people we read about be young and good looking. It would seem to me that people back then would age sooner due to hard lives; but if they are interesting characters, who cares? Most of what I've read so far has to do with the outward. Marty's dresses. Marty's hat. What Marty eats. Marty staying neat and tidy . . . Not that I am uninterested in the way people lived in that time period, but in a Christian book -- or even a good secular book -- I do not find a character who is mostly concerned with outward things to be very inspiring.

Book 4 of Love Comes Softly. Reuniting with their daughter’s family, grandparents Clark and Marty’s hope and faith are tested by a tragedy. Another Janette Oke bestseller!

Love's Enduring Promise is Endearing 5 out of 5 stars.

What can I say, people reading the book expecting to see the same story as the movie will be disappointed. The plot and story that you find within the movie is a completely different story. The book and the movie only share the title and the characters and that is it. Missie doesn't have to choose between Willie and some rich guy, Willie has no little brother and plays a very minor role in the overall book.

The book covers 13 years, and it is a rather short book to cover that length of time. The book picks up 3 years after the first book. Missie is five years old and the book ends with her wedding day.

There is no central plot, but a combination of plots woven together that Marty sees and experiences. Everything to Wanda and Cam's "different" son, the new teacher and pastor, her adopted daughters growing up, Ma Graham's son falling in love with an Indian girl, and that is just the tip of the heart seen in this book.

Love's Long Journey 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I tried to read this book three times and gave up after a few chapters. Then I decided I was going to read it from cover to cover, and I was delighted to find that the book picks up momentum as it goes along. It's like the first few chapters your'e pushing uphill, and all of a sudden you arive at the top and . . . WHEEEEE!!!!!!! A wholesome, well written novel about a young couple starting a new life together in the West. Realistic - not a fairy tale - but a joy to read. If I had a complaint, it would be the polarization between the Christians and the non religious charactors. Missy is always feeling sorry for the lost people and thinking about how cold and hard their hearts are, and how they have problems. I am a Christian, and I feel it is important to share my faith with others, but it should be remembered that all people are created in a unique and special way - believers and unbelievers. There are very few people who are so sick they are just one lump of pain and problems. Also, I thought it was slightly annoying how Missy constantly sympathized with the trivial difficulties of her neighbors on the wagon train when she had just as bad or worse problems herself. Seems a bit like a saviour complex, to me. Having thus said, I enjoyed this book and would highly reccomend it to fans of Inspirational and historical fiction.

Belinda's Life Continues 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Belinda continues to live in Boston and be a companion/nurse to her beloved Aunt Virgie. A three week trip home is such a shock she is wondering where she really belongs, but is needed in Boston.

The inevitable happens and the rich woman finally dies. The will and the estate must be settled. There are 2 grandsons who will be remembered. Belinda is expected to take on a role she never, ever even dreamed of. While she is accomplishing that role, she runs into the one person she never expected to see again. Can....or will......things change?

This 8th book is a perfect ending to the series Love Comes Softly, and thank you Janette Oke. God bless you and your continued writing of Christian Fiction for women. I am one of your biggest fans.

Editorial Review:

Book 8 of the bestselling Love Comes Softly series. Leaving her little prairie town, Belinda Davis never dreamed that the excitement of living in Boston would leave her restless and empty inside. Wealth, literature, travel, and romance touched her life with choices and decisions that brought dissatisfaction rather than joy. She discovered that only when God had first place in her life was her peace restored. Belinda once again faces decisions about her life that are no less difficult than before. A very unexpected responsibility makes the choice even harder.

Belinda is a tenderhearted teenager......with nieces 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Belinda is a teenager. Her closest friends are Melissa (her niece from the West) and Amy Jo the daughter of Clare. The three girls have very different personalities but all love each other...until....one handsome young man comes to their school. Knowing Jackson threatens their friendship for a time.

Belinda cannot bear anything in pain or dying, so she just naturally rescues whatever is maimed. This leads to her brother Luke asking her to help him in his doctor rounds. Belinda has found her calling even at her very young age.

The Davis family continues to be a Godly influence on their community and it zones in on the Simpson family. Young Drew, 17, is seriously injured in a logging accident and Dr. Luke is forced to amputate his arm. The results provide an exciting book to add to Oke's Love Comes Softly series.

Editorial Review:

Book 6 of the bestselling Love Comes Softly series. Belinda, Marty and Clark Davis’s "surprise child," has always had a tender and compassionate heart toward anything hurt and broken. Her parents watch with both misgivings and genuine pride as Belinda's older brother, Doctor Luke, influences her toward nursing. Will she have the inward strength to face the "hurt and broken" people whose bodies, minds, and emotions need mending? Belinda's niece, who is also a teenager, comes to live with the Davis family to finish her schooling. How will Melissa’s arrival affect Belinda's lifelong friendship with Amy Jo? And what happens when all three fall for the same nice fellow?

Belinda's story - her job, her life and her loves. 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Belinda is featured in this seventh book of the series. Her brother, Dr. Luke has trained her well and she is working full time as his nurse. Her job takes a twist when a wealthy, elderly socialite suffers a stroke on the train and must be taken off and cared for in their small town. After the critical period, Belinda then becomes a private duty nurse in their small town.

Meanwhile, she has seen her 2 best friends and nieces Melissa and Amy Jo marry and move out west. Nursing has consumed so much of her time that she has hardly realized that life is passing and she does becomes aware of TWO possible suitors at the same, exact time - Jackson has returned as a Doctor and joins Luke's practice. Rand is an up and coming builder who has plans for a home for Belinda and himself. An offer to accompany the rich old woman to her home in Boston removes Belinda from the predicament of 2 suitors and no real love on her part.

Not only does she accompany, but she stays on at the Boston mansion of her employer. Never has she seen or even dreamed of such finery but she does learn to adjust. "Aunt Virgie" thinks of Belinda more as a daughter than a nurse which causes no small stir among the other household help. Matters are complicated even more when the old woman's grandson Peter comes to America for a visit. Will a friendship or romance develop between the two young people? Aunt Virginia hopes so, to keep her beloved Peter nearby.

Belinda travels abroad with her employer, and even though she is experiencing once in a lifetime events, she is empty and dissatisfied inside. Has she traded her peace of mind in a tiny prairie town for a life of luxury and discontentment?

I am excited to begin book eight in this series, Love Finds a Home.

Editorial Review:

Book 7 of the bestselling Love Comes Softly series. Belinda Davis had trained as a nurse to assist her older brother, Doctor Luke. But as time goes by and she sees those she's grown up with getting married and settling into their own lives, Belinda becomes restless. What had seemed exciting and fresh becomes dull and routine. When she meets an elderly woman who needs nursing care, Belinda jumps at the invitation to go to Boston—a large, "civilized" city with cultural opportunities she’s never even dreamed of in her little prairie town. But in spite of financial security and countless new experiences, Belinda finds herself restless, lonely, and empty inside.

Interesting, good story 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

After being reunited with her birth parents in Nova Scotia and after saying a tearful goodbye to her Louisiana parents, Nicole has a yearning for more. She and Anne become close friends and Nicole loves her parents, but there is something calling to her, dividing her allegiance. Her Uncle Charles has asked for her to go to England and become his heir, and she considers doing just that. After prayer and consideration, she decides to leave.

England is a contrast to all she's ever known . . . its glitter and bustle are almost too much for her, and she feels useless among the rich trappings and servants.

Anne, meanwhile, is dealing with some devastating news. She decides to go to England. Anne adjusts more quickly to England than Nicole.

Nicole and her uncle have to make some hard decisions. . . .

I didn't find this book as exciting as the others in the series (especially Book 1, my favorite so far), but it is still interesting and integral to the series. The writing is still beautiful and thoughtful and this book is worth the read.

Book 3 in the SONG OF ACADIA series. (Book 1 is "The Meeting Place" and Book 2 is "The Sacred Shore")

The Thread Binding Them Together As Sisters Is All Too Fragile...

The bittersweet reunion of the Robichaud family and the Harrows in the land of the Acadians has brought two mothers and two daughters full circle. They rekindle those early bonds and experience restoration of those lost years, but time and tragedy have left their indelible imprints on all who have endured the decades of separation and uncertainty. Moving forward with their lives now means further farewells—not as devastating as the one long ago, but no less heart wrenching.

Their connection, which goes beyond that of "sisters" to best friends, will be tested by the coming Revolution and the lure of England—parted again, the reunited, but for how long...? Can their friendship sustain the startling revelation concerning...The Birthright?

An even better sequel to The Meeting Place 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My review of The Meeting Place said that it was the best I've read by Oke and Bunn; I was wrong! The Sacred Shore is now the best I've read by this team. The Sacred Shore picks up many years after The Meeting Place leaves off; Louisa and Henri are now settled in Louisiana with many other ousted Acadians, and Catherine and Andrew are now living the quiet life of a minister. Neither can forget the other, however, and their lives finally intersect again after many, many events, including the unexpected arrival of Andrew's estranged brother from England and the revelation of Louisa and Henri to their daughter of her birth. You will not want to quit reading The Sacred Shore until the end, and you will then begin anxiously awaiting the sequel!

Editorial Review:

Oceans and circumstances have forced families apart. For the banished French Acadians drifting in exile, the shore means safety though it is a safety at a terrible price. For the lonely British nobleman, the shore holds a single chance to secure his legacy. For Andrew and Catherine Harrow, the shore marks a tragic separation.

An extraordinary set of journeys awaits them all, each as intricate and perilous as the coastline itself. New beginnings are connected to all that has come before. And the past penetrates into what is yet to come. The common thread is a yearning to discover their identities in their families, in their communities, and in their God.

In this intimate historical epic, the heart-wrenching dilemmas of The Meeting Place come to rest on-

Could someone please explaine 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Ok, not to give anything away, but I've got to have this figured out for me. I've missed something. In the first book The Meeting Place Louise's name is Louise Belleveau, daughter of Jacques Belleveau, with two brothers Eli and Philippi. Now it the last book Nicole delares her mothers name to be Celeste Louise Evangeline Brassard, before marrying Henri Robichaud, and the letter from Charles states that (Celeste) Louise's mother had three children and only one lived to adulthood being Louise herself. Did I miss something? Information on her mother dieing seems to be know before the deportment of the Acadians according to the Charles' investigation, though her mother was on the boat with her which is when the investigator says there is thereafter no further information.

The other thing I can't figure is where Uncle Guy comes from. He is Guy Robichaud in TBL, appearing to be Henri's brother, but then it seemed in TMP Henri was an only child, though not stated. And in The Sacred Shore it says: "He (Henri) slowed and waited for Louise's brother to hurry over. Henri had always liked Guy."

Although another reviewer missunderstood that Celeste was actually the name of two different characters, first the name of John's father's first wife but also the part of Louise's name. They missed the fact that she was named after her Grandmother, thus confirming her decent from John's half-sister.

All this said I found the entire Acadia series gripping, inspirational, challenging and it sparked a desire for a closer walk with God.

Editorial Review:

Book 5 of Song of Acadia. In their own incomparable style, Janette Oke and T. Davis Bunn paint a portrait both lavish and poignant of the colorful, chaotic world of the American Revolution, where danger is rife and political views run deep. And once drawn into that world, readers will be reluctant to reemerge until the last triumphant chapter has drawn to a close. Learning of their beloved father's precariously ill health, Anne and Nicole make separate plans to visit him in Georgetown, in spite of the dangerous instability of the times. Nicole travels from Massachussetts with her fiancé, while Anne and her husband must brave an arduous transatlantic crossing from England. But the hazards of travel are not to be compared to the events or struggles with which each of these "sisters of the heart" must ultimately come to terms.
