Hymns for a Kid's Heart, Volume One, by Bobbie Wolgemuth and Joni Eareckson Tada, Illustrations by Sergio Martinez, Includes music CD, Crossway Books, 2004, Hardcover,
Ages 4-8, 96 Pages, ISBN-13: 978-1581345827, $21.99

Bobbie Wolgemuth and Joni Eareckson Tada collaborated to write the two-volume series, Hymns for a Kid's Heart. The books are illustrated by Sergio Martinez. Each hymn includes a short story about the song's author, and a full rendition of lyrical verses and music notes for piano or guitar accompaniment. A twelve track full-length CD of inspirational hymns, sung by a children's choir with orchestra accompaniment, is included to sing-a-long with.

Each song segment includes "From My Heart to You" written by Joni Eareckson Tada. She shares how particular hymns and singing have impacted her life. Sections conclude with Scripture to memorize in, A Verse for my Heart, and prayer, A Prayer for my Heart.

Volume one features twelve classic hymns that teach tenets of Christian faith, unlike much of contemporary Christian music that focuses on feelings. Fascinating personal stories of hymns' authors will educate and delight readers, young and old alike.

Wolgemuth believes there is a strong correlation between stories, music, and memory-making--
particularly for children. She uses what she calls "teachable moments," to teach hymns to her children and grandchildren. Moments found when a child is bored, or when the family works together in the kitchen, or nearly anywhere, because sing-a-longs are memorable and fun.

Four sections feature hymns about God, biblical truth, Christian living, and hymns of prayer for our country. Songs about God include Holy, Holy, Holy, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, and This Is My Father's World. Songs of biblical truth comprise O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing, How Firm a Foundation, and Amazing Grace. Hymns for Christian living consist of The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want, Rejoice, Ye Pure I Heart and Take My Life and Let it Be.

Children's joy-filled voices make each CD hymn my favorite. But, if I had to choose, the last part of the CD is what I played repeatedly. This segment includes hymns of prayer for our country and begins with America, the Beautiful, then Our God, Our Help in Ages Past, Eternal Father, Strong to Save, and Do You Know What it Means.

Wolgemuth, mother of two, and grandmother of five, joined with Eareckson, who she calls "soul sister," to write this two-volume series. Each author is passionate about hymns and they often encourage each other with hymn-singing by telephone. Since they live on the East and West coasts, they even carol together over the telephone lines at Christmas.

This musical CD and book will point little ones to the Lord and children will feel the love of parents and grandparents who read to and sing-a-long with them. Martinez' rich colorful illustrations enhance each hymn's depiction, and inspirational story. A glossary and pages for personal notes complete this classical offering. [..]

Editorial Review:

For centuries, Christians have fed the next generation the great hymns of the church. The words of these hymns reveal the depth of God s character and usher children into His presence. Hymns instruct in doctrine, provide hope in the dark times, and give reasons to celebrate.

For the children you love, this book is a feast. It has everything you need to teach twelve of the greatest hymns ever composed. And because these hymns are an introduction to the God who loves us and provides for each day's need, these words will nurture them forever.

Editorial Review:

The Power of the Cross

Nothing else in all of history is as important to our faith as the cross of Jesus Christ. We wear its symbol on jewelry or we see it lifted up in sanctuaries and posted in graveyards, but what does it really mean? Is it too difficult to talk about the cross with youngsters? Will they be able to understand what it means?

Authors Joni Eareckson Tada and Bobbie Wolgemuth are convinced that there is no better time to teach the power of the cross and the joy of the resurrection than the early years. What you hold in your hands has everything you need to teach children about the magnificent love of God and the power of the cross. Let the children you love understand the Passion of Jesus Christ and the warmth of God’s love with beautiful music and heartwarming stories. Let them sing along with Joni, Bobbie, and the children on the enclosed richly orchestrated CD, and in no time they will have memorized these classic and treasured hymns.

This special Passion collection features twelve timeless hymns and is the fourth in a series by authors Joni Eareckson Tada and Bobbie Wolgemuth. It is filled with delightful stories from the Bible, devotionals, simple piano music, guitar chords, and beautiful original illustrations by Frank Ordaz.

This book saved my life. 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Less than a month ago, I had a miscarriage. After the Dr's appointment when we found out the baby had died, The father drove me home, kissed me goodbye and told me he would be back after work to be with me. It is the last time I ever saw or heard from him. Within a week of that horrible day, my very best friend in the world abandoned me without explanation, ignoring my calls and emails to this day. At my very lowest, contemplating suicide, I went home to visit my parents, and picked up this book next to my mother's chair. I hate to read, but God had other plans for me that day. I could not put this book down, and thank goodness I couldn't. This book made evrything so clear to me. My whole sky opened back up. Life seemed worth living again, so that I could serve God. This book truly saved my life, and I would recommend, no, insist that anyone struggling through a hopeless situation read this. Joni is a true messenger of God and His word.

Editorial Review:

A practical and deeply biblical investigation of the problem of pain and a hopeful portrait of a God who weeps with us.

This is the best devotional I've ever read, everyday is uplifting and inspirational. It is a great gift for anyone!

Excellent Devotional--a great supplement to scripture 5 out of 5 stars.

My wife and I read one every night before bed. Joni has great insight and the writings are comparable in their scope and depth to the Oswald Chamber's collection.

We are on our 2nd time around. A scripture is the theme of each daily writing.

Wonderful devotional!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Joni writes from the heart and it shows in her devotional. Most days the topics deal with reflections of everyday people. But her way of looking at them and how they relate to the days scripture, will warm your heart. Nothing deep, just inspiring, like Joni!!

Joni's First Devotional book 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When a young family member died, I began looking for writers that were "real", "genuine". People who lived through bad, bad days when their faith was challenged.Joni is someone who is very real and transparent about her struggles with faith in a God that allows "bad things" to happen to you and they aren't miraculously cured like Job who got everything he lost and more returned. People like Joni never get back what they lost, but as she tells you in these daily meditations she received much much more. This occurred during and after her inner transformance in her relationship with God. An excellent book for people with Back Injuries, Chronic Pain, Fibromyalgia, TMJ, etc. More so if they were Christians before the condition.

Not to be Missed 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I have been reading this devotional every day for nearly a year now. It has helped me very much. Joni is honest about her disability and the way God has worked in her life since her accident. There are stories about other people and events as well. I highly recommend it.

Joni is always inspiring and has paid the price for recognition 5 out of 5 stars.

My name is Terry R. Tuley. I wrote the book "Battlefields and Blessings; Stories of Faith and Courage from the Civil War." My book was nominated for the Golden Medallion Award along with Joni's book "Pearls of Great Price."
I was at the World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia when her book won this prestigious award. I was blessed to even be counted as one of the finalists along with Joni in the devotional category. Joni's faith has been an inspiration to multitudes and the Lord has used her in a very special way. I cannot imagine the suffering she must have experienced learning to accept God's will for her disability. I do hope you read her book. She is very deserving of this award.

a book you'll never put down - ever 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This is one of those few stories that never leave you. Even after you have read the book, closed it and put it on the shelf, the story remains and you can't get it out of your head. A bright, energetic, full-of-life girl goes diving into the shallow water - an act that will forever change her life and ultimately change the lives of millions of others.

Suddenly, this athletic, independent young girl is trapped in a body that will not move. Paralyzed from the shoulders down, she finds herself no longer independent, but fully dependent on the care of others for the simplest of tasks. Things we take for granted like wiping away tears, blowing your own nose or brushing your hair - now on someone else's time table, not your own.

Understandably, this turn of events shakes her faith as she shakes her mental fists at God for dashing all her hopes and dreams for the future. Failed romances, rocky friendships, family heartaches - Joni holds nothing back in this insightful view into her world.

Through her emotional and spiritual failings, the author shares her growth and understanding of God's plan for her life and the lives of others. Using her mouth to draw and paint, the author became an established artist long before people realized that the artist whose work they were admiring was completely paralyzed and unable to use her hands. This revelation thrust her into celebrity where she has been able to make more of an impact on the lives of others than she would have ever been able to have accomplished prior to her injury.

Through her charity, Joni & Friends, the author has provided for wheelchairs for the disabled around the world and opened the doors of opportunity to wheelchair bound people everywhere.

I've seen the author on Larry King a few times and always wondered, "how does that woman keep smiling and keep such an upbeat attitude?" It is hard to imagine a worse fate than what she has endured since her accident, yet after reading her personal account of her life since that fateful summer in 1967, the reader understands exactly why she smiles and truly has joy in her life. I picked up this book thinking it would be 'interesting' and nothing more - I was delightfully surprised to find this to be a page-turner I could not put down. Even though I've finished reading this autobiography, I doubt I will ever truly put this book down. This is a story that sticks with you long after you've closed the back cover.

Editorial Review:

Here is the unforgettable autobiography of Joni Eareckson Tada and her struggles to adjust after a diving accident leaves her paralyzed from the neck down. Now with an inspirational update from Joni about the worldwide impact of her book and her Joni and Friends ministry. Includes photos and illustrations by Joni.

Editorial Review:

In the last few years, 9/11, a tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and many other tragedies have shown us that the vision of God in today’s churches in relation to evil and suffering is often frivolous. Against the overwhelming weight and seriousness of the Bible, many Christians are choosing to become more shallow, more entertainment-oriented, and therefore irrelevant in the face of massive suffering.

In Suffering and the Sovereignty of God, contributors John Piper, Joni Eareckson Tada, Steve Saint, Carl Ellis, David Powlison, Dustin Shramek, and Mark Talbot explore the many categories of God’s sovereignty as evidenced in his Word. They urge readers to look to Christ, even in suffering, to find the greatest confidence, deepest comfort, and sweetest fellowship they have ever known.

“John Piper and friends tackle some of the hardest and most significant issues of Christian concern, producing one of the most honest, faithful, and helpful volumes ever made available to thinking Christians. It is filled with pastoral wisdom, theological conviction, biblical insight, and spiritual counsel. This book answers one of the greatest needs of our times—to affirm the sovereignty of God and to ponder the meaning of human suffering. We need this book.”
R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky

“For all who don’t live a charmed life, for all who have given themselves to the point of exhaustion, for all who have been betrayed by pious backstabbers, for all who wonder if they can even go on, Suffering and the Sovereignty of God will be green pastures and deep, still waters.”
Raymond C. Ortlund, Jr., Senior Pastor, Christ Presbyterian Church, Nashville, Tennessee

“This is not another theological volume that complicates what appears to be an irreconcilable paradox; it is a book that grows out of practical experience and applies Scripture to a realistic world where we all live.”
Jerry Rankin, President, Southern Baptist International Mission Board

“This book will challenge you to believe that God is truly sovereign, not just in the safe haven of theological inquiry, but also in the painful messiness of real life. You will be encouraged to live more consistently by God’s grace and for his glory.”
Mark D. Roberts, Senior Pastor, Irvine Presbyterian Church, Irvine, California

After reading Mary K Baxter's book, I was skeptical about purchasing anymore books about the afterlife. But after watching the Heaven/Hell documentary, it inspired me to purchase this book. I must say that this book is biblical! Joni doesnt conjure up any false visions or dreams about heaven. She sticks strickly with the scriptures, and also adds her real life experiences to express her thoughts of the heavenly realm.

Very encouraging 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful book that provokes us to think and look forward to our future in Eternity, and ponder the amazement of what awaits us there. Joni's sufferings in this life give her a glimpse of what most never see because of being caught up in this life and all its' busyness. God draws near to those who draw near to Him.

Heaven Your Real Home 5 out of 5 stars.

Irresistible 5 out of 5 stars.

When Joni Eareckson Tada completes a book, I buy it immediately.
Since her first book detailing her accident, I have purchased every one since and given many as gifts. I love them all but this one is the most revealing.

The God I Love, is wonderful. I relate to Joni and her horse accomplishments and her life before the accident. She is an incredible writer. Now in this book, she fills us in on her entire life up to the present. There are several surprises. Her family, her friends, her travels thruout the world, how she deals with her physical condition, and what makes her joyful, are all here, written so beautifully and so sincerely.

I recommend this book to everyone - young and old - no matter what your religious affiliation - this book is about a life well lived despite being confined to a wheelchair because this talented intelligent woman reached out to God.
