The book issued by Echo Library in 2006, edited by T. Taylor, is an obsolete translation of an inauthentic version of a classic 1 out of 5 stars.
18 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Rev. Thomas Taylor's early 20th century translation of the memoir of St. Therese of Lisieux, unfortunately republished in 2006 by Echo Library, was made from the only manuscript then available outside her monastery, one substantially rewritten by Therese's sister Pauline, who made seven thousand changes. Scholars interested in the documents which gave rise to the cult of St. Therese may wish to consult early versions of Taylor. I urge those who want to read what Therese wrote to read the third edition of "Story of a Soul" translated by Fr. John Clarke, OCD, and published by ICS Publications in 1976. The Clarke translation, made from the unretouched manuscript written by Therese (an authentic manuscript published in French only in 1956), is recognized as the standard throughout the English-speaking world. No other translation compares to it. The book is enriched by an introduction, afterword, and easy-to-read notes that set Therese's manuscripts in the context of her life, and the index makes it even more useful. Whether you have not read "Story of a Soul" or have read only earlier English translations (Taylor, Knox, Beevers), the Clarke translation will open the world of Therese to you. Don't miss it. You'll find it at Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux, Third Edition

Editorial Review:

This book first published in 1898 in a highly edited verson, quickly became a modern spiritual classic, read by millions and tanslated into over fifty-five languages. John Clarke's acclaimed translation, first published in 1975, is now accepted as the standard throughout the English-speaking world.

The Little Flower 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Therese of Lisieux lived a very sheltered life. As we begin the book she actually seems to be spoiled by her family. Her parents were financially secure and devoutly religious. Therese knew she wanted to be a nun from the age of three. She had bouts of poor health and she suffered the loss of her mother early in her life. And then the sisters she relied on left one by one to join the convent. But she also had security and love from her family. She also had an incredible sense of self-direction.

In her book Saint Therese describes souls as similar to different types of flowers. Some are roses, others lilies, and some like orchids, for example. And all can be equally pleasing to God in their own way, when seeking his role for them. People have different talents and different struggles, but these characteristics do not mean that any type is more valued than the other.

Saint Therese describes the Christian Church as one body, and how she wants to be the heart that loves. She writes frequently of the many ways that God is love. She believed that heaven for her would be to be able to help people on earth after she died. She writes that any sacrifice in daily life can be offered to God, for the conversion of souls, or help of others, whether it is the suffering of an illness or loss, or the performance of a mundane daily chore. Therese also writes much she preferred to speak directly to God as a child when she prayed instead of using formal liturgy.

Editorial Review:

St. Therese wrote this account of her life at the behest of her prioress sister two and a half years before she died. Writing in her cold cell for a short spell each evening, this obscure manuscript was completed just a few short weeks before she expired.

If you are looking for inspiration in your daily life this book will deliver. St. Therese inspires within the reader the ability to tackle life's daily mishaps with grace and great reverence for our Lord Jesus Christ. It is through this book the reader will learn how to live the way St. Therese did through small acts of love and kindness that go unnoticed by man but not by God.

Consiglio vivamente a tutti di leggere l'autobiografia di Santa Teresina, scritta per obbedienza, in cui si trova la picola via della perfezione.

Personal Reflections 5 out of 5 stars.

St Therese is a saint for our times. She sees through our solid minds into the transparency of our deepest longings. This book is the very best of the short books. In this book we find only Therese, not a great deal of material about a lesser author.

Version of Therese's writings heavily edited by her sister 1 out of 5 stars.
44 of 49 people found this review helpful.

St. Therese of Lisieux's memoir, "Story of a Soul," has set the world on fire. For more than fifty years after Therese's death, the only edition available had been heavily edited by Therese's sister Pauline, Mother Agnes of Jesus, who made about five thousand changes in the manuscript. Michael Day's translation is made from this edited manuscript.

Happily, about 1956 the "Manuscrits authentiques," Therese's original manuscripts, were released to the world, and in 1976 Fr. John Clarke, O.C.D. translated them in the book "Story of a Soul: the autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux," published by the Institute of Carmelite Studies. This is universally acknowledged as the only authentic and authoritative English translation. Mother Agnes's version remains of interest to scholars who wish to compare the two manuscripts, or to study the version which gave rise to the original cult of St. Therese.

Editorial Review:

Story of a Soul has been translated into over fifty languages. This study edition is designed to assist contemporary readers to apply the spiritual insights of St. Therese of Lisieux' "little way" to their lives. It provides introductions, reflections and discussion questions for each chapter of the text.

a triumph; vividly supplements our picture of Therese 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

"The Poetry of Saint Therese of Lisieux" is the English translation of the critical edition of Therese's poetry. For the first time it makes available in English all Therese's poems, her least known writings. Some ("Living on Love," "Why I Love You, O Mary," "The Unpetalled Rose") are major works; some, occasional writings. Fr. Kinney's intimate and delicate understanding of Therese has blossomed into a remarkably clear, faithful, and lyrical translation. Therese reveals herself completely in the poems, which have an atmosphere of unguarded tenderness, of a child at play in the universe, searching all creation for images sufficient to tell her love for the Creator. While expressing freely the atmosphere of freshness, innocence, and playful abandon that surrounds Therese's poems, Fr. Kinney also gives the reader access to the graphic and stark images which spoke to Therese. The notes to these 54 poems enrich our understanding of Therese and of her relationships with the sisters and brothers for whom many of them were written. In this book Therese is as completely available to the reader as she was to those with whom she lived, to whom she tried to be "an open book."

Editorial Review:

The poems of St. Therese of Lisieux are among the least known of her writings. Here for the first time in English is the complete collection of Therese's poetry, faithfully translated from the French critical edition by Donald Kinney, OCD. Also included are a preface, general introduction and individual introductions for each poem. The French text is included.

Editorial Review:

The wisdom of St. Thérèse of Lisieux--for all who want to pray

How did this saint's precious--even precocious--childhood devotion to God develop into such wisdom? Thérèse Martin entered a Carmelite convent at age 15 and died of tuberculosis at age 24. In that short time, her "little flower" of a life came into vibrant, spiritual bloom.

Millions of people know and adore St. Thérèse--the world's most popular saint during the first half of the 20th century--from her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, an international bestseller.

This warm, wise little book will help you to discover firsthand how to receive God's presence and love. You will:

Walk with Thérèse through days of humility, suffering, beauty, and spiritual sensitivity.

Discover how, through prayer and growing faith, you too can follow your own Little Way to authentic Christian experience.

a gold mine of detail about Therese's life as she lived it 5 out of 5 stars.
38 of 38 people found this review helpful.

One of the most underappreciated books of the century. A translation of the critical edition of Therese's letters and those written to her from her birth till age seventeen. In "Story of a Soul" Therese writes "I find myself at a period in my life when I can cast a glance backward," but in the letters we accompany her day by day, and read what she wrote at 14 on the day of her visit with the Pope ("the good Pope is so old, one would say he is dead") and at 17 of her disappointment that her father could not attend her veiling ("Papa is not coming tomorrow! Celine, my tears are falling as I write . .. ") The notes are a rich documentation of Therese's environment, of the character of the Lisieux Carmel, and of her life, and reading through them chronologically yields a unique window on Therese's maturing and development over time. If you read the letters, you need no longer depend on the interpretations of others; you will be empowered to interpret Therese yourself. Please don't miss it.

Editorial Review:

Letter writing at the turn of the 19th century was an important activity for the people of France. Those who received letters from family and friends alike usually kept the hand-written texts sent to them as precious gifts. That is why this collection of letters is so interesting to us today. We have here those written from 1877-1890

Dry reading not in the least. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I found that the initial writings of St. Therese were getting very dry in reading, but something within the writings kept me reading on. What I realize now is how deeply spiritual some of St. Therese of Lisieux writings are, but you have to search within to feel the meaning.

When St. Therese realized that she had TB she gave thanks to God that her
Journey on earth will be short. Not to fear death but to embrace it as a gift, for she had the spiritual awareness that most of us are limited in understanding. The spiritual awareness was from within and not from someone preaching about salvation to her. The true sign of a spiritually gifted person, unselfish and free of the ego of personality.

excellent spiritual resource 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book contains three brief inspirational texts for each day of the year;the first text for each day is a brief New Testatment excerpt, and the second and third texts are brief excerpts from the writings of St Therese. The texts by St Therese follow the theme presented by each day's New Testament text. The year's chronological flow of the book follows the Church's basic calendar: octaves of Christmas and Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Ordinary Time, and Solemn Feast/Holy Days.

My wife ordered this book, and I personally did not expect a great deal from it (I had read St Therese's Memoirs years ago). Since the book was readily available at our family prayer table, and since each day's readings were quite brief, I began reading the book on a daily basis. I have found it to be a rich source of prayer and spiritual growth and recommend it to all serious Christians.
