I love this authors series. This one follows the life of Christ with very interesting characters. They weave truthful facts and stories into a well developed story line. I am always anticipating the next one in the series - can't wait! Very well written.

Fantastic! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the 7th book in the A.D. Chronicles series. This is the best series of books I have ever read, and I have read many. I would highly recommend this book. I am understanding the Bible better as I get insights into the history and traditions of the 1st century A.D.

The A D Chronciles 5 out of 5 stars.

I am interested in good clean stories that leave one feeling like life has some value. The A D Chronicles are such books. I would recommend them
for any adult's reading. The Thoenes are wonderful writers that have the ability to transport a reader back in time to share the action first hand.

Better Then the Last Entry 4 out of 5 stars.

The Messiah has come! After the angels visit, the entire village of Bethlehem is buzzing about His long awaited arrival. Rachel and Zadok are honored to have been such a big part of His arrival and lead the village in making Mary, Josef, and baby Yeshua feel right at home.

Meanwhile, a growing caravan of travelers is coming to pay homage to Yeshua. Crossing the wilderness, they face many dangers from the land and marauders as they approach their destination. And they continue to watch the sky as the signs continue to unfold.

Unfortunately for all, King Herod is still as paranoid as ever. He wants any sign of rebellion crushed immediately, and the news of the arrival of Messiah will mean bad news to all concerned. Can the arrival of Yeshua be kept a secret from the mad king? If he does find out, what will the consequences be?

After reading the last book in the series, I guessed at the general outline of this one, and I was right. Anyone familiar with the Biblical story of the birth of Jesus will find no surprises in the story. Yet the characters were rich enough that the book was able to draw me in most of the time. The lessons on the meanings of Jewish law and how that ties into Jesus' birth were kept shorter this time then the last book, which really help. And, even though I knew what was coming, the ending still gripped and moved me.

Interestingly, there was no mention of any of the characters from the first few books of the series. While the visit to Jesus' birth was interesting, I hope we get back to them in the next entry in the series.

Editorial Review:

Who in Bethlehem could guess that their tiny, obscure village, populated by shepherds, would become the hinge upon which all history turns . . . and the focus of a terrifying rampage? Sixth Covenant is the conclusion of the three-book Nativity story within the A.D. Chronicles series. Sixth Covenant chronicles Mary, Yosef, and baby Yeshua in the first months of his life in Bethlehem. From the shepherd's visit to the escape to Egypt to the Bethlehem babies who gave their life for Jesus, discover the most critical events in the history of the world.

I get lost in time when I read books during this time period. I just finished reading another series similar to this. Very inspirational and focused on the one true Light.

I loved reading about blind Penial...wonderful history lesson and gave you a feel of really living in the time of Jesus

Not bad 2 out of 5 stars.

I read this book after reading "The Kingdom and the Crown" trilogy by Gerald N. Lund and I thought it was an incomplete repetition of those books. Whereas I completely fell in love with "The Kingdom and the Crown", I found "First Light" boring and hard to read. I personally don't recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Go back in time to first-century Jerusalem. It's a dark time in the world's holiest and most turbulent city. Walk with Peniel, the blind beggar who longs for rescue from his suffering. Peek into the lives of Susannah and Manaen, two lovers separated by overwhelming odds. And meet an unusual healer, who ignites a spark of controversy in the fire of hatred, deceit, and betrayal that is always burning in this ancient city. This first book in the A.D. Chronicles series will bring you face-to-face with the man called Yeshua.

Great reading 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have read all of the AD Chronicles. I have enjoyed all of them but I believe the first two were the best. The Fifth Seal was a great reading experience. The authors take great pains to transport the reader back to the time and place of the ancient Judea. Their characters are very human and easy to identify with. You find yourselves wondering how it will work out even though this is the Christmas nativity story and your sure Jesus will be born in the stable in Bethlehem.

a challenge to love the Savior 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Every Christian knows the story of Christ and his humble birth. It is what we do not know that makes "Fifth Seal" so enthralling. The Thoenes expertise in Jewish history and culture is what gives this historical novel its outstanding quality. The authors' talent for weaving an irresistible story is simply a bonus.
The elegant style of writing combined with just the right balance of detail and back-story makes a superb read. While most books I review are tolerable with a few being agonizing, I have yet to pick up a Thoene book that does not tempt me to put aside all other "must do's" and sneak another page or two. Number five in the A.D. Chronicles series, "Fifth Seal" is no exception.
It amazes me how the Thoenes can take a basic Biblical plot--of which we all know the beginning, middle, and end--add a few original characters, then tell it in such an amazing manner that the reader is entirely captivated from start to finish.
The additional portion at the end of the book allows for an in-depth individual or group study and should not be passed over.
No matter where the reader is in his/her spiritual walk, "Fifth Seal" is sure to be all of these: entertaining, enriching, eye-opening, and a challenge to love the Savior more completely.

Editorial Review:

The little town of Nazareth is a long way from Jerusalem and King Herod's evil clutches. Yet is anywhere in Judea far enough? In their most dramatic, ambitious, and significant historical series to date, Bodie and Brock Thoene once again transport readers back in time to first century A.D. to the birth of Christ--the most critical events in the history of the world.

Well researched and well written 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Elisa Lindheim is young, beautiful, and gifted. The oldest child of retired Luftwaffe officer Theo Lindheim has grown up in Berlin, enjoying the privileges of her father's heroic World War I reputation and of his financial success as owner of Lindheim's Department Store. The shadows cast by Hitler's rise to power are darkening her life, though, in 1936. Estranged from her lifelong love and former fiance who's chosen to give her up on orders from his military superiors, Elisa lives in her Gentile mother's native Vienna and calls herself Elisa Linder. She plays in the opera house's first violin section, and - like so many other Jewish or part-Jewish Germans and Austrians - refuses to believe that things will continue to get worse. Any day now, the German military will have had enough of the mad paper hanger; and after that, life will be normal again.

Of course that's not what happens during the year that follows. As Theo Lindheim moves to get his family to safety, but fails to get himself out of Germany successfully, history in the making catches up with Elisa and forces her to make choices she never imagined anyone might have to face.

This is that rare book, a "faith based" novel that's worth any reader's attention. Well researched and well written, VIENNA PRELUDE moves along at a steady clip and then races to a suitably tense climax. The authors understand what far too many writers (especially of faith based fiction) don't "get" at all: that characters' actions must flow from who they are, not from what the book's chosen theme requires them to do. While the coincidences that keep parting and reuniting Elisa and American journalist John Murphy become strained from overuse, somewhere in the tale's second half, and a few of the characters' lines of dialog sound more like a sermon than an individual's words in conversation, the overall effect is just what it should be. The reader quickly becomes invested in knowing what will happen to Elisa and the others, and the triumph of their faith is all the more real because of the struggles that living it costs them. I expect to read more in this series, and that's the best compliment one can pay to any author.

Opening in 1936, the Zion Covenant series tells the courageous and compelling stories of those who risk everything to stand against the growing tide of Nazi terrorism that is sweeping through central Europe under the dangerous and deceitful guise of Hitler's Third Reich. Don't buy all three of the "new" Zion Covenant books 2 out of 5 stars.
65 of 65 people found this review helpful.

If you're a dedicated fan of the Thoene's Zion Covenant, Zion Chronicles series, you'll be very disappointed if you're expecting completely new material from these three books. London Refrain has the most new material, but the other two books are entirely taken from Twilight of Courage. A few sentences are added, but only enough to facilitate an additional story line added in London Refrain (which really doesn't ring true to the original story in Twilight of Courage). If you really wanted more on Murphy & Elisa, London Refrain gives you some of that story line. My advice, go ahead and buy book 7, but skip books 8 & 9 unless you've never read Twilight of Courage. Or, buy them just because you want your collection to be complete.

Editorial Review:

This description covers #7 London Refrain, #8 Paris Encore, and #9 Dunkirk Crescendo.

These three additions to the Zion Covenant series are "director's cuts." They include portions of the Thoene classic The Twilight of Courage and thrilling, never-before-published scenes with the characters you've come to know and love. Readers will finally know the fates of Jacob and Lori Kalner from Warsaw Requiem and meet for the first time David Meyer from The Zion Chronicles, plus Madame Rose Smith and Jerome Jardin from The Zion Legacy and, most importantly, Rachel and Yacov Lubetkin, the heroes of The Zion Chronicles series. Study questions included.

Dunkirk Crescendo... Anticlimactic at best. 2 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

If you've read my other reviews on the newest installments to the Zion Covenant series you'll know I'm an avid fan. However this book fails to impress in SO many ways. To put it best 99% of this book is made up of the latter third of The Twilight of Courage. It only includes a few very minor changes and, to be honest, most of the loose threads of the story and plot are summed up in the two-page epilogue. Terribly disappointing to say the least.

a must read 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Imagine living in a country ruled by an evil king. When you see his soldiers brutalize people daily, you wonder, Who will punish the wicked? You plead, When will this world be set right?
Imagine receiving a visit from an angel while you're milking a cow in your barn. What this angel says is so shocking, your life will never be the same. Would you think you were dreaming? Or would you believe the message? What if the message were true? Would you ask yourself, If I told others about it, would they believe me?
Imagine just before you are to be married you hear that your betrothed has been unfaithful. How would you respond?
You have now entered the world of Fourth Dawn.

Excerpt from the introduction to Digging Deeper into Fourth Dawn

Taking a drastic step thirty years back in time from where Third Watch, the previous book in the A.D. Chronicles series, leaves off, Fourth Dawn places the reader into the lives of those whom every Christian holds in high esteem. We unconsciously put them in a place of reverence for the roles in which they partook in the Messianic prophecies as they were fulfilled one by one over 2,000 years ago. But they were people, just ordinary people who were used by God in an extraordinary way.
Brock and Bodie Thoene delve into what their lives must have been like and put their own insightful thoughts onto paper in the most amazing history lesson for us to enjoy.
How must Zachariah have felt when, while fulfilling his Levitical duties in the Holy of Holies, he learns his elderly barren wife is to conceive? What about Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist? Haven't you always wanted to know what thoughts must have kept them awake at night as they saw themselves being used of God in such a personal way?
Mary is so young to bear such a burden for her people, to carry the Christ-child. Wouldn't you doubt your capabilities? Wouldn't you buckle under the weight of such responsibility?
In love with the sweetest girl in Nazareth, Joseph dreams of the day he'll take Mary to his marriage bed. He spends his days preparing his home to receive her, the home where they will raise children and grow old together. How must he have felt to know that he must not touch his beloved, that the child she carried was the Child?
Fourth Dawn will take you on their journeys of shock, fear, doubt, and acceptance. Other well-loved fictional characters from the series also make a re-appearance. The reader is swept into their pasts and shown what events made them who we know them to be from the first three books.
Onias, propelled by the urgency of the times, secretly, fervently scours the writings of the prophets searching, wondering...when will the Messiah come? What are the signs we must look for? Surely the hour is at hand! But who is that around that dark corner? Whose footstep does he hear at his back? Herod, that insane king of the Jews, would like nothing more than to see Onias staked to a cross, as well as any other who hungers for the coming of Messiah, the true King of the Jews.
The Thoenes uncover history as you've never seen it before revealing the God-ordered patterns and paths of the stars and planets and demonstrating how God used even those to point the world toward his Son.
Fourth Dawn's Jerusalem is teetering on the verge of earth's most magnificent and impacting event, and it's waiting for you to take part. This is a read that will deeply impact you and move you to pick up a copy of the Scriptures and study it out for yourself.
I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Editorial Review:

In their most dramatic, ambitious, and significant historical series to date, Bodie and Brock Thoene once again transport readers back in time to first century AD and the most critical events in the history of the world. In Fourth Dawn, Herod, the king of Judea, plunges deeper into madness as people wonder, Where is the promised liberator? As signs appear in the heavens, Mary of Nazareth receives an unusual visitor. What he tells her will change everything about her life . . . and impact all those in Judea and beyond for eternity!
