The spiritual premise in The Purpose-Driven Life is that there are no accidents---God planned everything and everyone. Therefore, every human has a divine purpose, according to God's master plan. Like a twist on John F. Kennedy's famous inaugural address, this book could be summed up like this: "So my fellow Christians, ask not what God can do for your life plan, ask what your life can do for God's plan." Those who are looking for advice on finding one's calling through career choice, creative expression, or any form of self-discovery should go elsewhere. This is not about self-exploration; it is about purposeful devotion to a Christian God. The book is set up to be a 40-day immersion plan, recognizing that the Bible favors the number 40 as a "spiritually significant time," according to author Rick Warren, the founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, touted as one of the nation largest congregations. Warren's hope is that readers will "interact" with the 40 chapters, reading them one day at a time, with extensive underlining and writing in the margins. As an inspirational manifesto for creating a more worshipful, church-driven life, this book delivers. Every page is laden with references to scripture or dogma. But it does not do much to address the challenges of modern Christian living, with its competing material, professional, and financial distractions. I purchased these for my Graceful Ladies Bible Study group, at their request. We haven't begun, yet, but we are anxious to get started.

Healthy, consistent growth is the result of balancing the five biblical purposes of the church." These five purposes are to "Love the Lord with all your heart," "Love your neighbor as yourself," "Go and make disciples," "[Baptize] them," and "[Teach] them to obey." And those purposes can only be accomplished, argues Warren, when church leaders stop thinking about church-building programs and shift their focus to a "people-building process" involving fellowship, discipleship, worship, and evangelism. It is an informative and celebration of life experience. The Bible versus and explanations helped me tremendously to understand the Bible. The author has great insight into life and the Bible.

Rick Warren does a great job of reviewing basic methods one will need to study the bible. In my humble opinion this is a great resource for the money. Here is how it's set up.

He previews how materials you will need, and how different study resources are used. He also tells you which ones are considered some of the strongest.

He gives you a preview of the 12 bible study methods and then goes into each more in depth. The 12 bible study methods are: The Devotional Method, Chapter Summary Method, Character Quality Method, The Thematic Method, The Biographical Method, The topical Method, the Word Study Method, Book Background Method, Book Survey Method, Chapter Analysis Method, Book Synthesis Method, and the Verse By Verse Analysis Method.

He also has 7 appendices in the back. These appendices are to aid you in what you just learned. He also has a list of other bible study books in the back for further learning.

In Conclusion, I feel this is a good book to learn various methods for personal bible study. The book is inexpensive (I got it for less than ten dollars), detailed, it teaches you what you will need and why, and gives you the keys to applying these various methods. I give it four stars because it is not as detailed as it could have been. However, if your looking to dig deeper he shows you which books to go to. This is a 4 and a half star purchase in my humble opinion.

I FIND THIS CD SERIES EXTREMELY USEFUL. I'M TEACHING A BIBLE STUDY ON THE PURPOSE-DRIVEN LIFE & FIND THIS VERSION A WONDERFUL TOOL TO RECAP EACH CHAPTER. WISH I HAD THESE CD'S THE FIRST TIME I TAUGHT ON THE SUBJECT!
GOD HAS USED RICK WARREN TO SOW WONDERFUL SEEDS IN COUNTLESS LIVES--INCLUDING MINE. I'LL BE ALWAYS GRATEFUL FOR THE NEW DIRECTION I'VE FOUND BECAUSE OF HIS WORK! THE CD'S ARE A CONSTANT ROAD COMPANION TO ME.

I am happy that this book has inspired some folks to be better people. I just can't agree with some of what the author is suggesting in his book.

A few things...

It sounds like to me he believes in predestination. I don't...I believe that man has the free will to make his or her own good and bad decisions in his life. God gave that to us. If everything is predestinend why bother reading or listening to this book anyway??? Making my own decisions have PREDESTINED my life. I don't think that God made those decisions for me.

The author suggests that God causes thing to happen in our lives...that he uses pain and problems to serve as wake up calls. I can't blame this on God...it's a human condition for Pete's sake! Are the destitute people in Africa really bad people? NO...the circumstances are really bad. And still born babies...abortions...child abuse...wife beating...murder...are those things that God causes? Nope...we're just human.

And how about what you do with the things that God gives us? Do we give it all up to live like Jesus? That's pretty much what he suggests is part of God's plan for us. He may be right! There are places in the Bible that suggest just that. My main concern is that he mentions that saving for retirement is not in God's plan. I may be going to that bad place for it but I'm saving for my retiremnent. My circumstances allow it. I figure what I do with it after I have to stop working is the real question...I hope!

Please don't allow my critique to affect your decision to read the book or listen to this audio version. There are plenty of good things in there that can help you live a good life. There is also more content in there that I don't necessarily agree with but it's not really worth mentioning here.

Someone gave this little book to me on my birthday in December. It's got brief, inspiring segments, perfect to leave in the WC. I love it so much, I bought several to have on hand as gifts. I have given one away so far to a friend for her birthday. This friend (a not-yet-believer) was very grateful and told me that she had memorized one of the verses. She is giving a copy to her sister. The beat goes on.

I was somewhat disappointed in this addition to the original book. It was just the quotes of the scripture from the original text. If I wanted additional information of what I read , I would have looked it up myself. It, to me, was a waste of my money.

I love the purpose driven life book, and wanted to share with my 17y old niece but knew she would sit and read, I thought this would be perfect, but was disappointed, it really would just confuse her more, and doesn't really provide a devotional guide, it's just been sitting on my bookcase, i wouldn't even find use for it.

If you are struggling with stress, failure, depression, an overwhelming crisis, this is a great book. The great thing about this book is that it gives real steps that you can do right now to help your situation and the way you think. It is written from a Christian perspective and offers Bible references and stories that offer hope and strength in difficult times. I loved the story of Elijah. I had read I Kings 19 before, but never thought about it the way he explains. It is short and to the point, not a lot of fluff, just sincere help when you need it most.

Many of the chapters have titles that don't fit to ever person. But in this book, I found that even though they may not fit to my life it always provided me with just what I needed to hear. I highly recommend this book by Rick Warren

If you are expecting the something as revolutionary as a Purpose Driven Life you will be disappointed, but if you are just looking for a good inspiring Christian book you will be pleased. The book is based on the fruits of the Spirit; love, joy, peace, gentleness... He gives a chapter for each of the fruits in which he gives steps to help incorporate each of the fruits in our life, while also clearly explaining that the fruit is a work of the Holy Spirit

Warren is best known for The Purpose Driven Life and The Purpose Driven Church. This is a much earlier work, but it is as good as either of the previous mentioned books. Warren is a master of taking the most difficult subjects in life and making them seem simple. I Purpose Driven Life, he makes living for God seem attainable to all of us. In this work, he makes something as hard as changing your life (an impossible task for most of us) seem attainable by anyone. Warren's reasoning and logic are amazing.

This is a valuable book for anyone struggling with things they would like to change about themselves and for anyone involved in helping people with life change.

This deluxe journal is a wonderful companion book with "The Purpose Driven Life". It helps to direct ones thoughts and ideas for journaling. It is a beautiful book and makes a wonderful gift for a man or woman of any age.

This journal is a nice companion to "The Purpose-Driven Life" for those who are documenting their personal journeys.

It's a little too restrictive for me in places, however, because it assumes things which don't apply to my specific view of spiritual life.

If you like journaling and can do so within the confines of a prescripted outline, this book is for you.

I was given this book for Easter when I was in junior high and didn't actually start using it on a daily basis until my junior year in high school. It took commitment of course, then it became more and more intriguing. I don't have the Purpose Driven Life book to accompany this, but it stands well on its own! I have been memorizing the "Point to Ponder"s for each day, and I've found that I use them everyday, whether at school or facing a difficult situation. If you want to grow closer to God, this journal will draw you in wholeheartedly. It will teach you about God in a very down-to-earth way, intensify your personal relationship with Him, and is friendly rather than frightening. I'm so in love with this journal, I carry it to school and write in it instead of doing classwork. =P
I would recommend this to anyone, on any level of faith, who wants to find their purpose, make their life matter, and please our awesome God.
