Let all who believe, read. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Well written in a purposeful and clear style.
I have no quips with the content nor extent of this book. Those essential elements and doctrines of Christianity are well spelled out and those wishing yet more clarification or depth can use this book as their important initial step to knowledge.
A great book to offer a young believer or to strengthen the nomimal.
The Trinity while not deliberately outlined, is evident to anyone who has some background in rationality - if all three persons of the Trinity are equal in all respects and all God, then this Doctrine is well represented with many direct quotes from Scripture.
I particularly like that Stott reveals those necessary duties of Christians (not for salvation but part of justification). Too often the Christian is informed that naught but his mental assent is needed. Here Stott delineates those crucial outward elements incumbent upon those that claim a true fellowship with Christ!

Editorial Review:

Who is Jesus?

"If Jesus was not God in human flesh, Christianity is exploded," writes John Stott. "We are left with just another religion with some beautiful ideas and noble ethics; its unique distinction has gone."

If Jesus is not who he said he was, and if he did not do what he said he had come to do, the whole superstructure of Christianity crumbles in ruins to the ground. Is it plausible that Jesus was truly divine? And what might this mean for us?

John Stott's clear, classic statement examines the historical facts on which Christianity stands. Here is a sound, sensible guide for all who seek an intellectually satisfying explanation of the Christian faith.

Great help for Journaling 5 out of 5 stars.

This deluxe journal is a wonderful companion book with "The Purpose Driven Life". It helps to direct ones thoughts and ideas for journaling. It is a beautiful book and makes a wonderful gift for a man or woman of any age.

I highly recommend this book.

Well bound, nicely presented 3 out of 5 stars.

This journal is a nice companion to "The Purpose-Driven Life" for those who are documenting their personal journeys.

It's a little too restrictive for me in places, however, because it assumes things which don't apply to my specific view of spiritual life.

If you like journaling and can do so within the confines of a prescripted outline, this book is for you.

An Incredible Push Towards God! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was given this book for Easter when I was in junior high and didn't actually start using it on a daily basis until my junior year in high school. It took commitment of course, then it became more and more intriguing. I don't have the Purpose Driven Life book to accompany this, but it stands well on its own! I have been memorizing the "Point to Ponder"s for each day, and I've found that I use them everyday, whether at school or facing a difficult situation. If you want to grow closer to God, this journal will draw you in wholeheartedly. It will teach you about God in a very down-to-earth way, intensify your personal relationship with Him, and is friendly rather than frightening. I'm so in love with this journal, I carry it to school and write in it instead of doing classwork. =P
I would recommend this to anyone, on any level of faith, who wants to find their purpose, make their life matter, and please our awesome God.

Not a Postmodern church 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Dan Kimball's book is not a Postmodern take on the modern church, but simply a new formula for the seeker-sensitive church to adopt. Dismissing any problems with the "seeker" way of carrying out the Great Commission, he sees it time to simply change the game plan. Unfortunately academic terminology is used to "dress-up" his view as he changes the meanings to respected words such as "postmodern" and "deconstruction". Dan Kimball's book is not propaganda; it just uses the same techniques.

Kimball uses the term "deconstructing" to describe the part of the book where he highlights the problems with the modern church (the book only addresses seeker-sensitive style church). Although "deconstruction" is an actual word, its meaning varies. As a philosophical term, it is very difficult to define. Kimball seems to use this word with authority, but also confuses the word with the term "destruction". Kimball fails to recognize the difference between the two.

This would also bring to light the second part of the book "Reconstructing". He puts the philosophy that he just destructed back together. His idea is to put it back together in a different way that would make more sense. But since he never fully "deconstructed" the idea, he puts his idea of church together the same way in a different form. An example would be building a house of cards, watching it fall, and then building it again in a different form, yet never replacing the cards with sturdier materials.

The seeker-sensitive church model comes from a Modernist way of thinking. A Postmodern view on the seeker-sensitive church would not be a good one. Although some would say the truth hurts, and is necessary for growth, some are blinded to it. Kimball also demonstrates one's inability to remove oneself to get a complete view (Kimball doesn't mention any styles or beliefs other than the seeker, whether they suffer from the same issues or not).

Maybe it is not formulas that the seeker-sensitive movement is using, but the fact that they are using formulas at all that is causing the problem.

Editorial Review:

Churches are noticing less and less emerging generations in their midst. The Emerging Church, winner of the 2004 Christianity Today Book Award, explores the cultural changes impacting churches and offers practical advice of how they can creatively reach emerging generations. Some of the "spiritual" things that were removed from churches are the very things that post-Christian generations are connecting with and find attractive in a church.

Great quick read. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Although I have yet to read the full version of "The Purpose Driven Life", this book did spark the interest and moved the book hihgher on my prioirty list. I can't wait to see the furhter insights.

This is a BOOKLET, not a book, otherwise it is good.... 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The way that Amazon describes this is as a BOOK, however, it is a booklet, very small, so I would NOT buy it at the same price again (way too much for a booklet) but I would spend up to a dollar on it.

The booklet itself is really good and would be easy to hand out to anyone and would probably be a great way to introduce new Christians or the unsaved to the ideas of what our purpose in life really is.

I was disappointed that Amazon touts this as a "book" though, so be forewarned.

Tolerable but unremarkable... 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This booklet is basically a collection of excerpts from Rick Warren's wildly popular "The Purpose-Driven Life." Having not read PDL, I cannot attest to how much of the significance of that book translates into this truncated version. "What on Earth Am I Here For?" is simple, easy to read, and filled with some good thoughts. It's not intellectual or especially profound, but lays out a series of helpful points. It is Scripturally-based and quotes the Bible throughout. However, some will be annoyed by the fact that many different translations are used, and the passages are quoted without specific reference within the text itself (it typically says something like "the Bible says..." and uses an endnote for the specific reference). But for an intended audience of non-Christians, skeptics, and the unconvinced, this approach is fine.

My complaints are two-fold. First, though not nearly as ridiculously as other reviewers suggest, this booklet does occasionally feel like a commercial for other "Purpose-Driven Life" materials. If this work does not stand on its own and requires further investigation of other books and resources, then it shouldn't have been published.

Also, "What on Earth Am I Here For?" is a little too succinct for my tastes. I'm all for simplicity and abbreviation, when appropriate, but this booklet covers a bit too much ground too quickly, and feels rushed and insufficient at times. Though it was fine, I simply would have liked more.

Purpose Driven Live DVD Study Guide 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Purpose Driven Life Video Study Guide is a very good addition to the Study, 40 Days of Purpose, which our Church is doing right now. I was dissappointed that this product (seller's fault, not the author or publisher of the product) did not come with the DVD. I simply did not read the fine print to realize I was not receiving the DVD with the guide. That fact aside, I am glad to have this guide to follow, as opposed to the condensed version the church is passing out for small groups to follow in their weekly meetings for study. This guide provides many thought provoking questions and insight into Rick's sessions from the DVD.

The Purpose Driven Life DVD Study Guide is a six-week, video-based small group study of The Purpose Driven Life® by Rick Warren—the book Publishers Weekly decalred the "bestselling nonfiction hardback in history."

Putting it in to practice! 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 19 people found this review helpful.

It wasn't until about 1/3 of the way through this book that the light bulb went on. I knew in an instant what the Holy Spirit had been gently knudging me about all along for so many years. This book confirmed many truths in my life. I am reading it again for a second time, NOW to put into practice the matrixs and find closure for several issues I have struggled all my life with. I am forever grateful that our Lord Jesus has inspired Tom Paterson with these teachings, giving the rest of us clear, concise guidelines to refocus our energies and establish a LifePlan the way the Lord intended. Thank You.

"In order to see where you are going, you need to gain a perspective on where you have been and what you have been gifted by God to be," says Paterson. "There are times when we each need to go to the 'mountaintop' to be able to see the terrain below."

This product helped me better understand the book. Along with the video, this put flesh on the book. If you read this without the video or the book, it won't make sense. Don't buy this alone! It goes with a video. I love Doug Fields' stuff. It's always practical and helpful.

I was very eager to get started reading the book, I was so lost when I opened this book, the directions of the book, and the areas that had to be filled in didnot make since to me. I also didn't understand the pages that had the word video written on them. Was I to look at a video tape to answer some of the questions?

A great supplement to the book by the same author. If you're leading a group of youth leaders through this material, why not have each person buy a copy and everyone be on the same page? It just makes life easier and is a great resource for later reference.
