Decent short-hand reference 4 out of 5 stars.

Not a bad book but it takes some work to get through the dry parts. I think that the book is decent.

Editorial Review:

Newly updated for Excel 2002, Writing Excel Macros with VBA, 2nd Edition provides Excel power-users, as well as programmers who are unfamiliar with the Excel object model, with a solid introduction to writing Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros and programs for Excel. Writing Excel Macros with VBA, 2nd Edition is written in a terse, no-nonsense manner that is characteristic of Steven Roman's straightforward, practical approach. Instead of a slow-paced tutorial with a lot of handholding, Roman offers the essential information about Excel VBA that you must master to write macros effectively. This tutorial is reinforced by interesting and useful examples that solve common problems you're sure to have encountered. Writing Excel Macros with VBA, 2nd Edition is the book you need to delve into the basics of Excel VBA programming, enabling you to increase your power and productivity.

Recipes for Access Developer Success 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

The Access Developer's Handbook Set (search ISBN: 0782140114) and in particular, Volume 1: Desktop Edition (search ISBN: 0782123708) is my definitive resource to approximately 4 years of Access development. I've got more stickies and highlights in this set than all other Access books combined. So when I came across the Access cookbook and realized that the same two indispensible authors (Getz & Litwin) put together a resource of Access developer solutions, I had to have it.

This book has not let me down. It is certainly geared towards the intermediate to advanced Access professional developers who already understand the basics of Access and more importantly, who also understand the shortcomings of Access and the benefits of getting around those shortcomings. There are about 170 solutions in this book that are segmented into 18 chapters of high-level topics such as Queries, Forms, XML, UI, VBA, Windows APIs, even Smart Tags. I would be really surprised to find someone who picked up this text, thumbed through the solutions, and found that there was nothing they could get out of this book.

I would say that if you are developing a professional Access front-end and/or database, you owe it to yourself to buy this book and review each solution before you release or ship your product. I did, and found either new answers and existing improvements to many of the things I was struggling with during my development cycles.

Editorial Review:

Access power users and programmers at all levels, from the relatively inexperienced to the most sophisticated, will rely on the Access Cookbook, Second Edition for quick solutions to gnarly problems. Each of the book's "recipes" examine a particular problem--problems that commonly occur when you push the upper limits of Access, or those that are likely to trip up a developer attempting to design a more elegant Access application --even some things you never knew Access could do. Fully updated for Access 2003, it's also one of the first books to thoroughly explore new support for .NET managed code and XML. All of the practical, real-world examples have been tested for compatibility with Access 2003, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. This updated new edition also covers Access and SharePoint, Access and SmartTags, Access and .NET; and Access and XML.

Being a normal human being, you probably have work to do. In fact, you may have lots of work piled precariously around your office or even stretching onto the Internet. Someone, possibly your boss, suggested that Access 2000 may help you get more done in less time, eliminate the piles, and generally make the safety inspector happy.

But if you’re confused instead of organized, befuddled instead of productive, or just completely lost on the whole database thing, Access 2000 For Windows For Dummies is the book for you.

You don't need to be a nerd to get the most out of Access 2000 For Windows For Dummies. If you know the basics of Windows 95, 98, or NT (whichever one you use) and have a desire to work with databases, you're ready to go. Everything you need to know is right here, just waiting for you to read it.

Each part of Access 2000 For Windows For Dummies covers a general topic of Access 2000. Right off the bat, this book answers the lyrical question “It’s a data-what?” By starting with an overview of both database concepts in general and Access 2000 in particular, this book provides the information you need to make sense of the whole database concept. You'll also gain insight into

  • Solving problems with Access 2000
  • Designing, building, using, changing, and generally coexisting in the same room with Access 2000 tables
  • Using the Access 200 queries to unearth the answers you know are hiding somewhere in your data
  • Committing your database to paper
  • Doing stuff faster and seeking assistance from the wizards. You'll even venture into a bit of programming

Now nothing’s left to hold you back from the wonders of Access 2000. Cleave tightly to Access 2000 For Windows For Dummies, consign the Microsoft manuals to a suitable dark hole, and dive into Access 2000.

Bon Voyage!

Editorial Review:

Alison Balter's Mastering Access 2000 Development is a well-written, well-paced, and comprehensive tutorial on virtually every aspect of the new Access 2000, written for any beginning or intermediate developer. With its notable clarity, this book can put basic Access development within reach of many users.

As an introduction to or a review of Access and database basics, Mastering Access 2000 Development provides a really strong mix of clear explanations (for tables, queries, and reports) that will let you get up and running. One of the best features of this book is its patient introduction to the world of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming. (If you've struggled to use VB/VBA before, these sections can make successful programming accessible to you.)

The decidedly low-end focus of this book doesn't mean that it skimps on more advanced features. Besides showing off the strengths of Access when used with SQL Server (including stored procedures), "black-belt" sections of the book look at Web support and the new Data Access Pages for delivering Web content. Sections on deployment and optimizing Access applications will be invaluable to any working Access developer.

Overall, it's the author's skill at explaining the fundamentals clearly that makes this a strong choice for readers seeking to get more out of the new Access 2000. Mastering Access 2000 Development is perfect for the Access user who wants to break through to successful database programming for the first time. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Access 2000, database basics, queries, reports, form design, VBA, scaling Access to SQL Server, ADO, DAO, client/server, deployment, Microsoft Office Developer (MOD) tools, Data Access Pages and Web support, and advanced features.

Excel 2000 has a ton of features, none of which I thought I would ever find. This book let me dig in at any level. I am only partially through it and have already learned so much.

Invaluable Resource for Beginner to Intermediate Users 5 out of 5 stars.

I ordered Microsoft Excel 2000: Step by Step to aid myslef in becoming more acclimated in the Excel platform. I have made spreadsheets and charts before using Excel 95 & 97, but it had been some time since I last employed Excel. Also, I never claimed to be the Excel Master that others profess to be. That's why I purchased this book - to not only make me proficient with Excel, but to bolster my abilities so that I will pass the Microsoft User Specialist Excel Master exam and become a Certified Excel Master and receive my pretty little certificate in the mail.

The 18 easy to follow chapters range from setting up a simple worksheet, integrating Microsoft Office data, distributing data online, sorting, filtering, & subtotaling data, as well as making amazing charts, graphs, and flowcharts that will be attention-getters and jump out at their audience. The extensive hands-on exercises utilize the copious amounts of example spreadsheets contained on the CD-ROM that allow you to move at your own pace while concurrently mastering Excel 2000.

Great Pictures, Where's the Content? 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I got this book in a class on MS Access, perhaps I went into it with too high of expectations, but the book is basically a wizard walkthru.

If you have the basic ability to click "Next" on a wizard and select the basic styles you are already well beyond the scope of this book. Sixty percent of each page is full colored, often pointless, illlustrations about the task at hand. I recall one section where the book used three pages and three seperate diagrams to resize a text box on a form.

Calling this book "Comprehensive" or applicable for the "Expert" skill level is like saying playdoh is the prefered material of master artisans.

Editorial Review:

Part of the highly successful Shelly Cashman series, this comprehensive text offers a step-by-step, screen-by-screen approach that goes beyond the basics to teach introductory and advanced topics of Microsoft Access 2000. Covers Microsoft Access 2000 topics such as maintaining and querying a database, creating custom toolbars, menus, writing visual basic code, and more. Editorial Review:

Access 2000 is the fifth version of the hugely successful desktop database from Microsoft. When it was first released in 1992, Access immediately gained praise for its ease of use and power. Each release of Access has added features and increased usability, and with Access 2000 we now have a unified development environment for the whole of the Office 2000 suite of applications. Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is the programming language that gives Access its real power, allowing you to automate complex tasks and create applications with more scope and flexibility than is possible with its default forms and macros. VBA has a simple syntax allowing even complete novices to learn programming with very little effort, and this book illustrates the concepts with plenty of examples and exercises.

Who is this book for?

This book is for users who already have a basic knowledge of databases and the basic Access objects, such as tables, queries, forms and reports. You now want to expand on your existing knowledge of Access and wish to learn how to program in VBA. You don't need any prior programming experience, although a basic knowledge of Access macros would be helpful.

What does this book cover?

  • Constructing a substantial example application with VBA
  • Mastering the foundations of Visual Basic for Applications
  • Understanding the concepts behind classes and objects
  • How Automation can be used to link Office applications
  • Creating custom objects using the Class Module feature
  • How to debug your programs and implement robust error handling
  • Adding support for multiple users
  • Publishing your Access database on the Internet
  • How to optimize and add polish to your finished database application

Great Book just skip the first chapters about computers!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The book is great but it is written for people who never had experience with computers. So I would advise anyone to skip those intial chapters. I highly recommend getting the spiral bound edition because the book is about the size of a major city's Yellow Pages and it is easier to handle.

The screen-by-screen instruction is terrific but of course, I ignore directions such as (open window, hit save, etc..). The lessons at the end of each project allow you to perform the lessons that you just learned. I would advise that you download the lessons on your computer instead of to a disk like the book recommends. Since I was just laid off, the book is great for brushing up on programs that you don't really use on a daily basis. I am planning to get the advanced versions of the book very soon.

Editorial Review:

Part of the highly successful Shelly Cashman Series, this text provides step-by-step instructions accompanied by full-color screen shots, helping students learn basic Office skills quickly and easily.
