good overview, though lengthy 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book after realizing there was no way I'd have time to outline for all my courses last semester. The beginning gives a good short overview. For more specific details and explanations you can look at the rest of the text. It was especially helpful because it was keyed to the casebook used in my course.

    Editorial Review:

Keyed to the popular Wills, Trusts, and Estates Casebook by Jesse Dukeminier. The most trusted name in law school outlines, Emanuel Law Outlines support your class preparation, provide reference for your outline creation, and supply a comprehensive breakdown of topic matter for your entire study process. Created by Steven Emanuel, these course outlines have been relied on by generations of law students. Each title includes both capsule and detailed versions of the critical issues and key topics you must know to master the course. Also included are exam questions with model answers, an alpha-list of cases, and a cross reference table of cases for all of the leading casebooks.

Not just for lawyers 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I am a physician who tested out of all college English to focus on science. Writing chart notes, scientific articles, or even parts of textbooks does not prepare one for the type of writing one must do when performing legal work.

Scientific-technical writing, legal writing, or the best-selling novel all require different writing styles. Mr. Garner's book must be a help to law students based on other reviews but importantly to me; it is very accessable to those who have never attended law school.

Legal style is a "style" that is important in the profession of law. If you do any work in this area at all, whether it is on the stand or writing essays, it behooves the non-lawyer to read this book. So, even though I agree with the glowing reviews from lawyers, this book may be even more important to those of us who must do legal work but have never been to law school.

    Editorial Review:

With expanded coverage in this new edition, The Elements of Legal Style features additional sections, many more examples, and a thoroughly researched appendix that contains 80 major statements on prose style--what it is and how to attain it. Inspired by Strunk and White's The Elements of Style, this book clearly (often wittily) explains the full range of what legal writers need to know: mechanics, word choice, structure, and rhetoric, as well as all the special conventions that legal writers should follow in using headings, defined terms, quotations, and many other devices. Garner also provides abundant examples from the best legal writers of yesterday and today, including Oliver Wendell Holmes, Clarence Darrow, Frank Easterbrook, and Antonin Scalia.
If you want to make your writing clearer, more precise, more persuasive, and above all more stylish, The Elements of Legal Style offers the surest--and the most enjoyable--means to that end.

West's Business Law Alternate Edition 5 out of 5 stars.

The product in itself was exactly what I needed. I am taking a Business Law class as part of my curriculum in Business Administration. I have found the the book is very informative but a little dry in reading. I was pleased with the speed of how the product was shipped but displeased in the condition it arrived in for part of the binding was literally cut down the bottom. It hasn't caused any issues for use but I know I will not be able to sell the book back to anyone without losing half of what I paid for it. My advice is to be aware of what you are buying and make sure that you ask the right questions. This was my first item bought off Amazon and it was much needed for class becuase the bookstore ran out and would be a while before getting any in so really there was little to no room for argument with the vendor. Anyway make sure you ask question and be aware that New does not always mean New!!!!!

    Editorial Review:

Known for its comprehensive, authoritative coverage, this text offers instructors great flexibility in choosing which areas of the law to emphasize. Cases are summarized by the authors to facilitate student comprehension.

One of the Better Gilbert's 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Gilbert Law Summaries: Property is one of the better Gilbert commercial outlines.

My property professor did not use Dukeminier's textbook, yet, this outline still seemed to flow pretty well chronologically with what we were studying. This was really helpful. I imagine that if your professor uses Dukeminier's textbook this resource would be even more invaluable.

Like any other Gilbert's this outline has a TON of information. Much much more information than you will likely cover in your class. And, as always, the outline is fairly specific in its coverage. It lists all of the exceptions to the exceptions which will likely bog you down if you do not have a good understanding of the general framework of the property law you are studying. And which will likely not be tested on your exams...but they are always good to know.

All-in-all I used this book to supplement my studies and found that it covered everything I needed and more. I didn't find any inconsistencies or conflicts with anything my professor said. Too bad property law in itself is killer.

    Editorial Review:

The subjects discussed in this outline are possession (including wild animals, bailments, and adverse possession), gifts and sales of personal property, freehold possessory estates, and future interests (including reversion, possibility of reverter, right of entry, executory interests, and rule against perpetuities). Also included are tenancy in common, joint tenancy, and tenancy by the entirety, condominiums, cooperatives, marital property, landlord and tenant, and easements and covenants. This outline also covers nuisance, rights in airspace and water, right to support, zoning, eminent domain, sale of land (including mortgage, deed, and warranties of title), and methods of title assurance

Outstanding Step by Step for the Do-it-yourself Inventor 5 out of 5 stars.
38 of 39 people found this review helpful.

I have all of David Pressman's books on patenting, you know why? Because I filed my own patent using these books. That's how good they are. They really do have step by step instructions. He also has software that helps you prepare the docs. I sort of used that as well. Again, reasonable priced, and useful. I strongly recommend these books for anyone that wants to File a Patent. They will allow you to do it yourself without an attorney.

Do It Right - Do It Yourself - And Save Money! 5 out of 5 stars.
37 of 37 people found this review helpful.

On the last couple of patent applications I submitted, I ended up doing 90% of the drawings myself because it turned out to be easier than continuously having to correct the mistakes of the draftsman. My attorney said that my drawings just needed to be shaded and cleaned up a bit, and have the legends applied, but otherwise what ended up going into the applications was essentially my drawings with a few more bells and whistles. His draftsman had just put them on a light table and copied them as is. But I still had to pay for the drawings!

This book was able to get me the rest of the way there by detailing the regulations that the USPTO puts on drawings. They're not really difficult, but they ARE specific. Don't be intimidated by them. The very simple drawing style specified by the USPTO is to allow clear reproduction and printing. My attorney charges $295 per figure, and one page can have 2 or 3 figures on it! The last application we submitted had about a dozen figures total. Some of the expense is the work of integrating and describing the drawings, but it is guaranteed to save you money if you do your own drawings. Besides, this ensures that you will be satisfied with the quality and accuracy. Don't forget you can also have the draftsman do the difficult 3-D "Figure 1" bit, and you do the simpler stuff. Like me, I'll bet you'll find it easier than you thought!

    Editorial Review:

A companion to David Pressman's bestselling Patent It Yourself, this book shows inventors how to complete a crucial step in the patenting process--creating formal patent drawings that comply with the strict rules of the U.S. Patent Office.

A digest of rules too broad for serious instructional use. 3 out of 5 stars.
34 of 35 people found this review helpful.

The 5th Edition of "Business Law Today, The Essentials" is a slightly pared down, paper-bound version of the authors' hard back college text "Business Law Today, - Text and Summarized Cases, Legal, Ethical, Regulatory and International Environment."

SUMMARY. The book fills the bill as a "Readers Digest" reference work on general legal principles. But, it is too broad in its treatment to be a reliable resource for comprehensive instructional purposes.

BASIS. This reviewer is an attorney with over 25 years experience teaching business law. The writer uses the 5th edition of this work, and used the 2d, 3d and 4th editions of the text, as a required instructional resource in accordance with directions from academic administrators.

    POSITIVE ASPECTS.

    - The 5th edition of "Business Law Today, The Essentials" is well written and very readable. The presentation is visually attractive.

    - It includes new material on the up-to-date issues created by e-commerce and cyber law.

    - There are excellent chapter summaries highlighting, in outline form, the major topics covered in the chapter.

    - There are numerous marginal references to Web sites and sources for additional help and information.

    CONCERNS.

    - Content appears to have been sacrificed for aesthetic white space & wide margins. This has been a continuing trend. With each "new edition" there has been less and less textual material. Major legal concepts are given a short treatment of only a sentence or two. However, the interesting and provocative discussion questions at the end of the chapters raise issues which, if they have been addressed by the courts, cannot be correctly resolved based on the information in the text. The result is students have a misconception as to how a principle works or how the majority of courts might rule. When missing information is added by the instructor, student reaction is frustration and distrust of the text.

-Whole concepts have been deleted from text between editions.(Although, thankfully, the topic of usury, a major concept in business law which was totally deleted from the 4th edition, is again mentioned in the 5th edition.)

    - Case examples too often tend to focus on the more colorful, unusual exception to a controlling legal principle, rather than explaining the rationale for the majority rule or demonstrating how a principle works in daily business situations. The result is often student confusion, since one does not learn a general principle where the only example of the its application is an exceptional situation where the general rule is not apply.

    - Support materials and test bank answers to questions are unreliable. While the answers given in the test bank are legally correct, about 10-15% of the time it is reported the correct answer to a test bank question cannot be extracted from the textual explanation on the cited page in "The Essentials" edition of the text.
