Editorial Review:

Until the spring of 2001, the Houston energy giant Enron epitomized the triumph of the new economy. Feared by rivals, worshiped by investors, Enron seemingly could do no wrong. Its profits rose every quarter; its stock price surged ever upward; its leaders were hailed as visionaries.

Then a young Fortune writer named Bethany McLean wrote an article posing a simple question - How, exactly, does Enron make its money? - and the company's house of cards began to collapse. Though other business scandals would follow, none has had the shattering effect of Enron's bankruptcy, which caused Americans to lose faith in a system that rewarded top insiders with millions of dollars while small investors, including many Enron employees, lost everything.

Despite enormous media coverage of Enron, the definitive story of its astonishing rise and fall comes alive for the first time in this gripping narrative, by McLean and her Fortune colleague Peter Elkind. Drawing on a wide range of private documents and well-placed sources, many of them exclusive, McLean and Elkind lead you behind closed doors and deep into Enron's past, to pierce the veil of secrecy that has surrounded the company's inner workings and corrupt culture.

The Smartest Guys in the Room is fundamentally a human drama -- of people drunk on their own success, people so ambitious, so certain of their own brilliance, so fueled by greed and hubris that they believed they could fool the world. The book explores the motives, thoughts, and secret fears of a fascinating array of characters, including:

* Ken Lay, the genial but clueless CEO who reveled in the trappings of his office but ducked the responsibilities. From the earliest days of Enron, his weakness allowed greedy lieutenants to run amok.

* Jeff Skilling, the brooding, mercurial genius who was the architect of Enron's greatest triumphs-and its ultimate disgrace. "I am Enron," he once boasted. As the company unraveled, so did Skilling.

* Rebecca Mark, the glamorous "It" girl of Enron International who raced around the globe in high style and battled Skilling for control of the company.

* Andy Fastow, the brutally ambitious, deeply insecure whiz kid. Inside Enron his colleagues marveled at how his complex schemes allowed the company to scam Wall Street-not realizing that he was secretly scamming Enron.

* Ken Rice, the Midwestern farm boy who was seduced by Enron's fast-money culture and who cashed in while hyping a high-tech business that didn't exist.

* Cliff Baxter, the manic deal maker and Skilling confidant who resented Fastow's murky self-dealing. "He's a goddamn master criminal," Baxter would rail.

Just as Watergate was the defining political story of our time, so Enron is the biggest business story of our time. And just as All the President's Men was the one Watergate book that gave readers the full story, with all the drama and nuance, The Smartest Guys in the Room is the one book you have to read to understand this amazing business saga.

Life saver for 1st year Law Student Torts Class 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

When I ordered this book, I was skeptical it would be of much use, and didn't even pick it up to help me study until the night before my final. When I finally got around to reading it, I realized that it was a wonderful resource. The tips about what to expect on the exam were very helpful and easy to remember. The information is given to you in a way that helps you retain key words and facts you need as you are writing your essay answers on the test. I believe that this book helped me more on my Final than the review of all my other materials from class and online.

Not really sure how to review this, but it is necessary for those of us who want to stay compliant and up to date with building regulations. It isn't necessarily easy to read, but like I said, it is what it is. :)

The First Book to Truly Teach Real Estate Method 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book does for real estate investing what Pimsleur does for language learning: it teaches you to speak the real estate language, to ask knowledgeable questions, and to make informed decisions.

I have been through dozens of books, tapes, and CD programs on investing in real estate. Some are strictly motivational with little useful information. Others are like reference works and cannot be read from beginning to end. Still others hope to be meaningful forever and so dare not give you anything too current, or disputable and likely to change. Lechter and Sutton, however, wrote a book to turn a dreamer into a real estate investor. If that's what you still want at the end - but you have all the info to make the decision. Other reviewers might say that there are no "secrets" in this book - true, I suppose - but if YOU don't have a tutor for the subject, then for YOU common knowledge is a secret!

The authors give separate advice for dealing with primary residence and for investment properties. Most other books blur these separate cases. Special cases where individual state law might differ from the general situations are pointed out. Case studies and repetition are used throughout - much like Pimsleur uses conversation in each language lesson. The reader brings everything learned earlier to each case, but is stretched just a bit to see why each case is unique. Each chapter builds on prior chapters. Included is the required amount of math, but this is clearly not a math book. On the contrary, it is an enjoyable read cover-to-cover. Some of the material is current as of 2006 and this is clearly noted. I hope this book gets updated every few years.

While technically part of the Rich Dad series, the book stands on its own. The reader is fully aware of the few tacked-on references to the Rich Dad philosophy.

This book is a must-read for anyone thinking about a career in real estate investing in all its forms. Consider it the second book you read - after something like "Home Buying for Dummies."

Editorial Review:

From the bestselling author of Buffett, When Genius Failed, and Origins of the Crash, a wake-up call to the pension and retirement crisis facing America and the road map for a way out

In While America Aged, bestselling author Roger Lowenstein explains how corporations and governments ran up ruinous pension and health-care promises to workers—promises that are now coming due and that will hit America like a tsunami if nothing is done.

Negotiating high benefits means gambling with future finances—and when the farm gets sold out from underneath major corporations or public institutions, it affects all of us, and in ways we might not imagine. With his trademark narrative panache, Lowenstein unravels the truth about how pensions work in America and illuminates the impending crisis. While America Aged is comprised of three fascinating case studies— each an object lesson and a compelling historical saga. The first goes back to the early days of the United Auto Workers and its crusading leader, Walter Reuther, to tell the story of how pensions and health-care obligations destroyed the American auto industry, in particular General Motors.

Lowenstein then shifts the scene to New York City to tell the story of the rise of public pensions and public sector unions through the vehicle of the Communist-led Transport Workers Union. Once again, justifiable benefits were followed by outrageous ones, such as the right to retire at age fifty. The saga reached a dramatic climax in 2005, when workers responded to proposed pension cutbacks with a massive strike that brought New York’s subways and buses to a screeching halt days before Christmas.

In the concluding episode, Lowenstein visits a metropolis even more reckless in doling out benefits—San Diego. Desperate not to impose higher taxes, city officials in this highly conservative enclave cut a series of deals with unions to short-change the retirement system and use pension funds to run the city. A massive scandal ensued—two mayors resigned, officials were indicted, and San Diego lost its bond rating. Lowenstein warns that the pension wars that erupted in Detroit, New York City, and San Diego are only the first. But he also recognizes that workers are entitled to decent security in their retirement—a critical problem as the country ages. While America Aged explains how we came to this crisis, and it also proposes a way out. Arming readers with knowledge of the consequences of doing nothing, While America Aged, first and foremost, a call to action.

NEC Code book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I thought I was ordering a paperback book,I received a looseleaf book.I don`t know if the mistake is mine or a misprint.I do know that thr NEC Tabs are not a CD Rom, they are sticky back tabs that stick to the page to locate articles in the book quicker.I`m pretty sure I saw "paperback"and I don`t recall seeing "looseleaf".In either case bold print identifying paperback or looseleaf would be most helpfull.

Mislabeled Title Description 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Yes the product title is incorrect, but the rest of the description is absolutely correct. It should be obvious to even the most casual observer that the tabs go into the book - as the "better together" section clearly shows. There are many other sources for these items that do describe them properly, but be prepared to pay more.

So here's the choice: Pay less and be infinitely irritated that Amazon made a small, insignificant listing error out of the billions of listings they have, or buy it for more money elsewhere, but be content in the knowledge that the description was correct.

Sheesh.

Editorial Review:

User-friendly and up-to-date, these National Electrical Code®Tabs are a great way to organize the NEC® 2008. These self-adhesive tabs can reduce the time spent searching to find key information. Tabs are durable and allow for positioning adjustments after being placed on the code paper. Affordable and time-saving, these are a must-have for NEC® users.

This book, and in fact, this entire series serves as a very useful tool for any law student--it is an excellent test prep.

If you're struggling in a particular subject, it DOES help some--but I'd really look to the nutshell series or some other source if you're looking for an in-depth analysis.

It gives numerous flow charts and gives good exam tips. I recommend this if you can't afford Emanuel Law Outlines.

These flash cards are the best way to drill the info into your brain. And the older versions still work too. Keep them around for any and all exams, essay, quizzes.

Splendid resource for students in California non-ABA law schools! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you are bored with your textbooks then try these flash cards. They focus in on consideration and promissory estoppel and allow you to work on those areas. These cards skip the fluff and tell you that consideration is 'bargained for exchange and legal value' et cetra. Easier to study than text books but not a substitute for them. Note : Contracts make up 1/3 of the California Baby Bar Exam

As a 1L studying contracts, I find the flashcards very helpful in clarifying my understanding of how the blackletter law can apply to a wide variety of fact patterns. The hypotheticals reinforce my general understanding and recall of the required elements. I find the flashcards to be really helpful right after my contracts professor addresses a particular topic, and also for studying for finals. Also, the flashcards reference a very popular treatise in contracts. If you want to read more indepth on an issue that you're unclear about, you know exactly where to go in the treatise.
