Adequate 3 out of 5 stars.

Nolo has the annoying habit of giving you diluted books that ask you to buy other books of theirs to round out your knowledge of a given subject. This is no exception. I was interested in filing a provisional patent. This book has info about it, but kept referring to another book. This is perverse given how easy it is to file a provisional patent. On top of it all, there was some misleading information about the order of sections, and no useful info on filing online (I had to learn this from the USPTO site itself through a lot of digging). What's more, the book is fairly simplistic and "for dummies" when it comes to discussion of patent law - I have read better books (not how-to guides) on that. The book is not bad, just keep in mind that it is limited and definitely not a one-stop shop.

Editorial Review:

Say that you've come up with a really nifty idea for a gizmo that would improve the lives of every human being on Earth and probably turn you into a gadzillionaire, too! Before you get too far into the fantasy, you need this extremely detailed and comprehensive guide to the process of getting a patent. This is not a small book, but it contains everything you need to know, including a lot of things you probably don't KNOW you need to know. Very detailed, with examples of forms you'll need, addresses and marketing advice, this is the complete guide you'll need to navigate this complex process from square one to gadzillionaire-ness!

Not bad for a textbook 4 out of 5 stars.

I read this for an IP survey course in law school. The cases were well edited and the comments were relevant. The authors don't hide the ball. This is one of the few textbooks that I will probably not sell.

A Must Read For True Entrepreneurs 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Michael Lechter's book "OPM" Other People's Money is one of the finest books written for creating financial leverage. The information teaches anyone how they can take an idea and truly turn it into a significant financial gain without risking their own capital.

You do not need money to become successful. You need a worthwhile idea and other people's money and or resources to bring that idea to fruition. Don't shelve your dreams due to lack of cash flow. One idea in this book provided me with over $30,000 in other people's resources and I did not give away equity to do so.

After you read this book then lack of cash flow is no longer a reason not to transform your ideas into reality. Apply the knowledge in this book and you have more than a short-lived chance of success. We have all heard the saying that knowledge is power. Once you have learned the information contained within this book you will have the power, you just have to apply it.

The material is straight forward. This is a must read for anyone that considers themselves a true entrepreneur. I learned more about cash flow and understanding how to attract other people's money and resources in this book than I did in six years of college.

If I had this information prior to starting my entrepreneurial life I am sure I would be 50 times wealthier today.

Thank you Michael, You Rock!

Editorial Review:

Cash flow is the foundation of every successful business, but investors do not have to start with their own money to build a business. Money can be made by acquiring an asset, turning an idea into a fortune, or building a business, using other peoples moneyOPM. This book will discuss different forms of OPM, how to find OPM, the consequences of using OPM, and the legal aspects and pitfalls of trying to access OPM.

Excellent book - idiotic title 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a serious but very readable approach to educating filmmakers on the maze of legal hoops that must be jumped through in order to create a film. Indispensable resource to have.

Lawyers not producers 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It was a book with that gave you a good background on how film production works from a legal perspective. So you should read it if that is your concern. The authors are lawyers, not producers.

Great Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If it's not already, this book will soon become the industry standard for substantive knowledge of the film business for independent filmmakers. Deal points, standard contract provisions, the often technical and confusing jargon, and the historical context for many industry practices are all covered here in comprehensive yet concise fashion. Topics of interest that are covered in depth include standard talent and producer agreements, developing a screen play, financing, and digital distribution. The book was a tremendous asset to me when I had to help an independent filmmaker comply with complicated federal securities laws in order to raise $200,000. Highly recommended.

A Must-Read for the Technology Manager 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Teska's book is must-read for every inventor and manager concerned with protecting intellectual property. So much about the patenting process can be arcane, confusing, and counter-intuitive to the non-patent professional. It does all make sense--even the claims!!!--once you understand the patent system's underlying philosophies, but somebody has to lay it all out for you.

Teska's book does that. It is at once an informative and accessible read. I particularly resonated with Teska's 25 or so "Patent Myths," which encapsulate so much of what the potential inventor and her manager probably think (wrongly!) about the patent process. Been there, done that with my own clients.

Patent Savvy for Managers will help the reader answer such threshold questions as: "Is there an invention here that could be patented? and "Will it be worthwhile to do so?" Also, by cluing in the reader as to what the patent attorney is trying to accomplish in drafting the patent application, Teska prepares the inventor and her manager to participate more fully and more intelligently in the patenting process--including evaluating the patent attorney's proposed claims to make sure that the invention is properly protected.

This would be a good book, too, for a patent attorney to share with clients. "Read this," the attorney might say, "and you'll see what we are trying to accomplish."

A book like this is long overdue--especially for managers in smaller companies with no in-house IP legal resources. In fact I had been planning to write one just like it. Now I'm not so sure. Teska has already done it.

Slow Paced Plot and Rather Flat Characterization 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

ERRORS AND OMISSIONS has been promoted as a "gripping legal thriller" but I didn't find it particularly gripping or thrilling.

I ultimately found this novel to be a rather slow-moving experience. The main character, middle-aged lawyer Michael Seeley, is not particular likable or well developed. Despite his enormous financial success, Seeley spends a lot of time in this novel pitying himself and engaging in a variety of self-destructive and unprofessional behavior. I found him a tough character to root for.

The plot moves slowly and mainly consists of a series of dialogues between Seeley and a host of supporting characters. Much of this dialogue is stilted and ponderous. This is the type of book where characters give speeches instead of having real-life conversations. Some of the subject matter of this novel is interesting, but it is not served well by the dialogue.

I also found the storyline of this novel to be remarkably convoluted and largely rooted in the past. I was hoping for a more realistic and topical plot, given Goldstein's background as a prominent copyright and IP attorney. That didn't happen here.

In short, I found this book rather disappointing. It's a decently written novel that explores some interesting issues, but the plot and characterization falls short. I also found the ending rather limp and unsatisfying.

For a debut legal thriller that's much better than this one, I would recommend John Hart's KING OF LIES.

    Editorial Review:

An astonishing novel of legal and moral suspense from Paul Goldstein, a stunning new legal literary talent.

Meet Michael Seeley, a take-no-prisoners intellectual property litigator–and a man on the brink of personal and career collapse. So when United Pictures virtually demands that he fly out to Hollywood to confirm legally that they own the rights to their corporate cash-cow franchise of Spykiller films, he has little choice but to comply. What he discovers in these gilded precincts will plunge him headfirst into the tangled politics of the blacklisting era and then into the even darker world of Nazi-occupied Poland. Drawing on historical fact and legal scholarship, this is a breathless tale of deception and intrigue.

What an incredible book!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is such an amazing book. Tons of great information, advice, references, and examples. Reading this book has made me want to start my own business, rather than just try to sell my idea. It is overwhelming, but so exciting at the same time!!! Thank you so much for such an incredible guide!!!!

You can do it! 5 out of 5 stars.

I thought the first thing I needed to do with my invention was make a prototype. NO! Tamera says the first thing I need to do is get a spiral notebook and keep a hand-written ledger of everything I do, chronologically, to protect myself in court. I NEVER would have thought of that.

She explains step by step what to do next and HOW to do it: how to do market research, patent research, etc. But most of all, she gets right to the meat of everything. Tamera does not fill up her pages with fluff to make a dreary fat book. She guides us through the steps and all the way, she recounts how one particular mom handled these steps. She also puts in so many other examples from other mom inventors along the way.

It seems so easy, and she is inspiring. When I was a stay home mom, I felt overwhelmed, and out of touch with the professional world. Husbands and family aren't always necessarily supportive. Tamera says don't let any of that hold you back: you are much smarter than you think, so get that idea to market!

    Editorial Review:

The Mom Inventors Handbook. gives practical step-by- step advice for putting inspiration into action. The book takes inventors from idea development to marketing and sales covering everything from market research to prototype development, manufacturing and licensing and debunks some common myths. It simplifies the invention process; even providing stories from real mom inventors sharing their 'aha' moments and lessons learned.

Patent Powerhouse! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I'm a newly minted patent associate. I've seen other massive tomes around on drafting basics. I'm aware that the bosses rarely have time to initiate a tutorial for the associates. So, what's the solution? I just happened to read an ABA pitch for Slusky's book and picked it up. What a book it is!

It's not easy to take complex subject matter and distill it down into its key components while being educational and keeping the pace light, but dare I say as a novice patent attorney, that Slusky seems to have accomplished just that. I don't know the man, but I couldn't help but think as I read this book that he was standing over my shoulder at my desk, shepherding me along.

It's so clear to me: read with a goal--begin with the problem/solution and keep it in your head throughout your drafting. Slusky's mantra has made it seem so much easier. And isn't that the mark of a good teacher after all, substituting mastery for mystery?

Some people don't learn by reading, but by doing. Fair enough, but this book, unlike its more massive brethren in the field, packs more useable knowledge per page and in an enjoyable style to read, than the others ever could.

Thanks. I feel ready to tackle the most challenging of patent apps!

    Editorial Review:

This book is a comprehensive approach to analyzing inventions and capturing them in a sophisticated set of patent claims. It provides the reader with practical pointers and guidance and uses everyday inventions as references, such as the ball point pen and paperclip.

standard casebook, no real fireworks! 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This casebook contained all the usual cases that are typical in a patent law/intellectual property casebook. Unfortunately, there should have been more content which described the patent process as well as the patent prosecution procedure in order to allow the reader to fit the case law into the appropriate scheme of things.

Fine for Survey Course 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The previous review suggests that the casebook is not a good choice for someone wanting to focus in greater detail on patent prosecution or litigation. I imagine this is intended for use in a survey course, and think it's fine. It certainly does not teach the MPEP or prepare someone to take the patent bar, but that is not its purpose; I used the PatBar course for that. As far as patent litigation, I won't a course in that until next semester, but I believe this casebook did a nice job in surveying the important principles in litigation.

    Editorial Review:

The authors feel that students considering patent law for the first time should look forward to learning legal tenets as venerable as the Constitution itself yet as current as the latest development from the laboratory bench. This casebook is comparative and constantly refers to aspects of foreign patent systems. This is with the understanding that patent practitioners without an understanding of the international patent system place their clients at a significant disadvantage.
