Decent, but not the best 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This review book is decent at best. This is mainly due to the fact that it is fairly old. It doesn't contain a lot of the new material and this can be devastating in patent law as it is changing very rapidly. The review it does have is decent but a little sparse for my liking. An Introduction to Patent Law by Meuller is a much better review on the subject and is much more recent.

Very informative and thorough introduction to patent law 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book from Amazon on advice from a friend who actually practices patent law, while I am merely interested in understanding the IP issues around starting my own business. I am not a law student etc.

Here is what I liked:

The book is very comprehensive. It covers all conceivable (for a layman) patent law issues, going from basic principles and interpretation of the law, and providing examples from historically significant cases. You learn about what a patent embodies, how to obtain and use it (enforce, license, etc), and various litigation and international issues.

The book is also very up to date. The cases discussed include very recent ones, up to 2003 at least. There is also relevant discussion of biotechnology and information technology (computers, software).

Best of all, the book is short and easy to read. It took me less than 3 days to read it and there are some entertaining examples thrown in which make it easier to read and understand the otherwise boring legal intricacies.

A couple of caveats:

The book does not replace consulting a lawyer, but it will definitely make you more knowledgeable when dealing with one regarding your own or someone else's patents.

The book also does not discuss business issues such as the appropriate patent valuation techniques, license fee structures, etc. You need other books for this, and as of this writing, I am not aware of anything quite as concise as this book but about the business aspects.

Editorial Review:

Provides a general yet original overview of cybercrime and the legal, social, and technical issues that cybercrime presents. Understanding and Managing Cybercrime is accessible to a wide audience and written at an introductory level for use in courses that focus on the challenges having to do with emergence, prevention, and control of high tech crime. It takes a multidisciplinary perspective, essential to full appreciation of the subject and in dealing with this very complex type of criminal activity. The text ties together various disciplines--information technology, the sociology/anthropology of cyberspace, computer security, deviance, law, criminal justice, risk management, and strategic thinking. One reviewer writes, "The book provides an excellent introduction into what cybercrime is, why we need to be concerned about it and what can, and is, being done about it." Another reviewer describes Understanding and Managing Cybercrime as, "a major contribution to the emerging study of cybercrime and information security."

Slow Paced Plot and Rather Flat Characterization 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

ERRORS AND OMISSIONS has been promoted as a "gripping legal thriller" but I didn't find it particularly gripping or thrilling.

I ultimately found this novel to be a rather slow-moving experience. The main character, middle-aged lawyer Michael Seeley, is not particular likable or well developed. Despite his enormous financial success, Seeley spends a lot of time in this novel pitying himself and engaging in a variety of self-destructive and unprofessional behavior. I found him a tough character to root for.

The plot moves slowly and mainly consists of a series of dialogues between Seeley and a host of supporting characters. Much of this dialogue is stilted and ponderous. This is the type of book where characters give speeches instead of having real-life conversations. Some of the subject matter of this novel is interesting, but it is not served well by the dialogue.

I also found the storyline of this novel to be remarkably convoluted and largely rooted in the past. I was hoping for a more realistic and topical plot, given Goldstein's background as a prominent copyright and IP attorney. That didn't happen here.

In short, I found this book rather disappointing. It's a decently written novel that explores some interesting issues, but the plot and characterization falls short. I also found the ending rather limp and unsatisfying.

For a debut legal thriller that's much better than this one, I would recommend John Hart's KING OF LIES.

Editorial Review:

An astonishing novel of legal and moral suspense from Paul Goldstein, a stunning new legal literary talent.

Meet Michael Seeley, a take-no-prisoners intellectual property litigator–and a man on the brink of personal and career collapse. So when United Pictures virtually demands that he fly out to Hollywood to confirm legally that they own the rights to their corporate cash-cow franchise of Spykiller films, he has little choice but to comply. What he discovers in these gilded precincts will plunge him headfirst into the tangled politics of the blacklisting era and then into the even darker world of Nazi-occupied Poland. Drawing on historical fact and legal scholarship, this is a breathless tale of deception and intrigue.

Great Book! 4 out of 5 stars.

Ever wonder where all those examples of crazy inventions come from? This is the book. Glasses for chickens, dimple maker....all sorts of crazy ideas. Maybe it will stimulate some new ideas. Either way, it's so cheap you can't go wrong.

A Most Amusing Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the most hilarious books you will ever browse, and will be eager to share with a someone. It is a treat. It induces nothing but side-splitting belly laughs without ever trying. The book lists actual patents obtained, by inventive out-of-the-box thinkers and tinkerers. It beats any current humorists's or comedien's dull gibberish by a long shot. I knew there were wacko patents issued to wacko inventors but this list contains: lip shaper, automatic saluting hat, trains which go over one another on the same track,( as opposed to colluding) vulture powered baloons, water splashing wake up clocks, chewed gum locket, and some others I will let you to find out yourself. All and all, there are about 60 inventions listed. These inventions, all, were granted US patents by the Patent Office. Keep it on your bedside it will end your day laughing out loud regardless of the day you had earlier.

Editorial Review:

Hilarious but real inventions including edible tie pin, automatically tipping hat, metal locket for storing chewed gum — all patented

Editorial Review:

Business has always been driven by ingenuity and innovation. Now, more than ever, with an economy built on "knowledge work" and intangible value, developing--and protecting--intellectual property is vital for individuals and organizations alike. This book presents a brief but thorough survey of U.S. patent law, presented in the clearest possible terms for nonspecialists--including scientists, engineers, business managers, and entrepreneurs--as well as students and practitioners of patent and intellectual property law. Drawing from both practical and academic experience, Alan Durham explains the basis of patent law and covers such topics as the application process, claim interpretation, the requirements of novelty and non-obviousness, disclosure requirements (such as "enablement" and "best mode"), and infringement--including infringement under the controversial "doctrine of equivalents." Complex legal issues are explained through in-depth examples, many borrowed from actual cases, and feature such timely topics as patent protection of computer software, business methods, and biological materials. This revised and updated edition discusses recent developments in the law and draws from the most current case authority. Used as an introduction to the topic or a handy desk reference, this book will be an indispensable guide to the dynamics and mechanics of patent law. Durham illustrates complex legal issues through dozens of in-depth examples, many borrowed from actual cases. Of particular interest are cases involving patent disputes over computer software, business practices, and biological materials. From building a better mousetrap to building a better mouse, Patent Law Essentials defines the coverage and limitations of patent law and its protections, and shows how they are applied in the courts and in practical application. This revised and updated edition discusses recent developments in the law and draws from the most current case authority. Used as an introduction to the topic or a handy desk reference, this book will be an indispensable guide to the dynamics and mechanics of patent law.

Tops as "entry level" introduction to copyright 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Given the the complex, and ambiguous nature of copyright, publishers and serious writers should a have number of copyright law books in their library. Besenjak rates highly as an understandable introduction. If you could read only one introductory book on copyright, read this one.

Editorial Review:

This newly revised edition of Copyright Plain & Simple outlines the fundamental elements of copyright as they apply to a variety of works, including: literature, drama, music, choreograpy, pantomimes, motion pictures and other audiovisual works, architecture, and so on.

Some issues that are covered in Copyright Plain & Simple include:

Editorial Review:

In 1998, copyright lobbyists succeeded in persuading Congress to enact laws greatly expanding copyright owners' control over individuals' private uses of their works. The efforts to enforce these new rights have resulted in highly publicized legal battles between established media, and new upstarts. In this enlightening and well-argued book, law professor Jessica Litman questions whether copyright laws crafted by lawyers and their lobbyists really make sense for the vast majority of us. Should every interaction between ordinary consumers and copyright-protected works be restricted by law? Is it practical to enforce such laws, or expect consumers to obey them? What are the effects of such laws on the exchange of information in a free society? Litman's critique exposes the 1998 copyright law as an incoherent patchwork. She argues for reforms that reflect common sense and the way people actually behave in their daily digital interactions. This paperback edition includes an afterword that comments on recent developments, such as the end of the Napster story, the rise of peer-to-peer file sharing, the escalation of a full-fledged copyright war, the filing of lawsuits against thousands of individuals, and the June 2005 Supreme Court decision in the Grokster case.

In this linguistic study of law school education, Mertz shows how law professors employ the Socratic method between teacher and student, forcing the student to shift away from moral and emotional terms in thinking about conflict, toward frameworks of legal authority instead.

This book is a must have for managers in theater. It covers most of the typical contractual issues managers face. This book's biggest asset is the CD. The CD allows you to download and modify virtually all the documents included in the book.
You need to have a bit more than a cursory understanding of the legal principles behind some of the language in the agreements, but if you have that knowledge you will refer to this book time and again.

Editorial Review:

Most Paladin readers know Ragnar Benson as a survivalist, a powder monkey, a trapper, a hunter and a dispenser of survival medicine, but how many know that he has been involved in the PI business for more than 25 years? In this, his first book on the subject of investigations, Ragnar offers readers two books in one. He reveals how PIs, cops and military interrogators conduct interviews, investigations and interrogations, and he also shows prospective witnesses how to survive them. For investigators, he shares his professional secrets and real-life scenarios for creating effective pretexts for any situation, opening up a witness and keeping him talking, recognizing and "listening" to nonverbal clues, and deciding whether to use honey or vinegar to get the desired results. Then he turns the tables on his fellow investigators and gives potential witnesses specific tips for avoiding - or at least surviving - the tactics, techniques and tricks favored by skilled investigators. Whether you want to be an investigator or avoid one, you won't want to miss this book.
