Editorial Review:

In this enlightening book James Boyle describes what he calls the range wars of the information age—today’s heated battles over intellectual property. Boyle argues that just as every informed citizen needs to know at least something about the environment or civil rights, every citizen should also understand intellectual property law. Why? Because intellectual property rights mark out the ground rules of the information society, and today’s policies are unbalanced, unsupported by evidence, and often detrimental to cultural access, free speech, digital creativity, and scientific innovation.

Boyle identifies as a major problem the widespread failure to understand the importance of the public domain—the realm of material that everyone is free to use and share without permission or fee. The public domain is as vital to innovation and culture as the realm of material protected by intellectual property rights, he asserts, and he calls for a movement akin to the environmental movement to preserve it. With a clear analysis of issues ranging from Jefferson’s philosophy of innovation to musical sampling, synthetic biology and Internet file sharing, this timely book brings a positive new perspective to important cultural and legal debates. If we continue to enclose the “commons of the mind,” Boyle argues, we will all be the poorer.

Editorial Review:

In a marketplace that depends so thoroughly on cutting-edge information technology, can classic economic principles still offer any real strategic value? Yes! say Carl Shapiro and Hal Varian. In Information Rules, they reveal that many conventional economic concepts can provide the insight and understanding necessary to succeed in the information age. Shapiro and Varian argue that if managers seriously want to develop effective strategies for competing in the new economy, they must understand the fundamental economics of information technology. Whether information takes the form of software code or recorded music, is published in a book or magazine, or even posted on a website, managers must know how to evaluate the consequences of pricing, protecting, and planning new versions of information products, services, and systems. The first book to distill the economics of information and networks into practical business strategies, Information Rules is a guide to the winning moves that can help business leaders-from writers, lawyers, and finance professionals to executives in the entertainment, publishing, and hardware and software industries--navigate successfully through the information economy.

Good for a total novice 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Knowing nothing about copyright law, this Examples & Explanations was useful in showing me the "bigger picture." The book is divided into four sections: copyrightable subject matter, ownership and transactions, statutory rights, and copyright litigation. It highlights major sources of conflict, like the exceptions to Section 106 rights, but gives only 20 pages to fair use. There is a little coverage of the DMCA and new technologies but not as much as I had hoped for.
Perhaps my biggest criticism is that the book just does not offer what other books in this series have: there are very few case references and there are many more examples than there are pages devoted to explanatory material.
Overall, good for a novice, or someone that missed major portions of class all semester.

Editorial Review:

Now, the proven Examples & Explanations series expands to include a volume on copyright law. This brand-new study guide offers much-needed assistance in navigating the complexities of the field.

Editorial Review:

The legendary Charles C. "Cash and Carry" Pyle, considered by most to be the first sports agent, negotiated a $3,000-per-game contract for Red Grange to play professional football for the Chicago Bears in 1933. Today, salaries in the tens of millions of dollars are commonplace, and instead of theatrical promoters and impresarios, professionally trained businessmen and lawyers dominate the business. But whereas rules and penalties govern the playing field, there are far fewer restrictions on agents. Incidents of agents' manipulating athletes, ranging from investment scams to outright theft of a player's money, are far too frequent, and there is growing consensus for reform

In The Business of Sports Agents, Kenneth L. Shropshire and Timothy Davis, experts in the fields of sports business and law, examine the history of the sports agent business and the rules and laws developed to regulate the profession. They also consider recommendations for reform, including uniform laws that would apply to all agents, redefining amateurism in college sports, and stiffening requirements for licensing agents. This revised and expanded second edition brings the volume up-to-date on recent changes in the industry, including:

- the closing of one of the largest agencies
- high-profile personnel moves
- passage of the federal Sports Agent Responsibility and Trust Act
- the National Football League's aggressive and high-profile efforts to regulate agents

Very helpful with step by step procedures 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I recently purchased this book, to market one of our company product ideas. When I picked up the book locally at barnes and Nobles, I was a bit reluctant by the quality of the paper and the print. But within hours I was at my office, reading it, and it has abolutely good information. The "words of wisdom", "tricks of the trade" tips on each page are very helpful.

One can be in business without understanding many critical aspects of invention and marketing. Being a professional services company so far, this book is helpful for me when I'm venturing into new product inventions, manufacturing and marketing.

The books takes the reader step by step with real examples of the authors experience and points out the pros and cons of various scenarios.

It also has a comprehensive workbook for every section of the book (convered as a separate module at the end of the book) for the inventor to document and prepare for everything.

Wonderfully written book. After browsing through few books, I purchased this one. I also got some other related books. But haven't gone through them yet. I'll review them after I read through them.

The author, Ronald has truly manifested his experience for many of us to learn without re-inventing the invention wheel and suceeding without too many trials and errors.

Very Good Intro 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a very good intro to patent law. It covers the essentials of 35 USC 101, 102, 103, 112 with clear language and essential case histories. It's not enough to pass the patent bar, but it's an excellent place to get an overview and foundation before going on to more detailed patent bar study materials. It's also good for reviewing concepts for practicing patent professionals. It is focussed mainly on the law, meaning it does not cover many of the administrative issues related to prosecuting patents, but it covers the law well and clearly.
Spying On The College Of Your Choice

Great introductory book on patent law for scientific professionals 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Although intended for law school students, this title can be very useful for scientific professionals who frequently encounter patent-related issues in today's industrial R&D world. Particularly I find its great value for researchers in the fields of chemistry, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry.

The best feature of the book is that the author successfully breaks down the often abstract and difficult statutes, laws and prosecution into easily understandable texts. She is so good at using specific cases and examples to explain important points that a chemist/biochemist like me can read the book without much difficulty or inconvenience. It has a list of discussed cases where you can find familiar names such as: Amgen, Baker Hughes, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Genentech, Dow, Eli Lilly, Gen-Probe, Merck, Perkin-Elmer, Pharmacia, etc.

As a textbook in law school, it covers some patent (law) history and its societal impacts which may not be interesting for some practical purposes. It is certainly not a patent examiner's handbook or MPEP, nor is it a preparation book for patent bar exam.

If a chemist wants to quickly grasp some background without reading this 400-page book, I recommend the excellent materials provided by American Chemical Society to its members through its website.

Editorial Review:

Written by leading scholars, each title in the "Introduction to Law" series contains comprehensive treatment in black-letter style. Featuring footnotes citing to case law, statutory and other authorities, these volumes are ideal for in-depth research on particular issues and points of law.

Gets the general idea but somewhat disorganized 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I had a Copyright class this past semester. My book was organized very differently from the supplement, so it's not like the information isn't there, you just had to dig around to find various things that corresponds to your text. Also, since the supplement covers all IP subjects, don't expect a real in-depth treatment in any particular subject.

Valuable reference for creative workers 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

There's plenty of useful information on copyright law online, but this book is much more comprehensive and detailed in defining what is and is not in the public doman. It's aimed more at potential users of writings, music and art than at their original creators. However, since the book clarifies copyright law so well, it's actually an excellent reference for musicians, writers and visual artists.

Separate sections cover writings, music, art, photography, movies and tv programs, software, maps, architecture and choreography. There's also a useful section on databases -- an important copyright area for websites that update frequently. Trademarks, design patents and publicity (i.e. the need to get permission before photographing a person) are also covered.

This is not the only book on copyright law that a creative worker will need. For artists, The Legal Guide for Visual Artists, by Ted Crawford, covers contracts and other legal matters as well as copyright. Writers will probably want a reference copy of The Copyright Permission and Libel Handbook, by Lloyd J. Jassin and Steve C. Schecter.

However, this book is a valuable addition. Certainly if you're a collage artist or work in any field that incorporates creative work from other people, you should have this book on hand to consult. It's a reference book, not a book to read from cover to cover.

Editorial Review:

Need content? It's free for the taking!

Even though you've always been told otherwise, writers and artists can copy other people's work and get away with it. How? By dipping into the public domain, where everything is free for the taking.

The Public Domain is the only book that helps you find and identify what creative works are protected by copyright- and what's not. The book provides specific information about:

  • writings
  • music
  • art
  • photography
  • architecture
  • maps
  • choreography
  • movies and video
  • software
  • databases
  • collections

The 4th edition is crisper, fresher and completely updated with new case law, and includes information on the emergence of the "copyright commons." The book also provides hundreds of resources to help you find public-domain works.
