Helped Me Do Well! Others should have utilized! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I just took the compressed BPA in Chicago last Saturday (02AUG08)- the 3rd Edition exam guide was instrumental in helping me get an 85 (70 was the minimum for passing). Out of around 110 applicants, probably 50 passed. When we got to the ALT, you could hear people in the room deflating from the unplanned difficulty- DO NOT underestimate the Alternate Language section, for that matter, the entire test is long and not easy. (As a comparison, I recently got an 86 on the TEA which is supposed to be more difficult). Also, a LOT of the Spanish speakers did not make the cut either- DO NOT take the Spanish section unless you can teach it (or at least make sure you have a good handle on English for the verbal reasoning).

THE STAR RATING: I gave the study guide 4 stars because of some typos and errors. I can think of 5-8 instances where the correct answer as indicated by the book was, in fact, not correct. Other typos were when the editors were using the Homeland Security Border Patrol Prep Manual as a template and did not change the prefix/suffix to match their rules. There are no other guides out there, so at least we have this one.

FREE ONLINE TEST: I could have done without this freebee. I was coming off an excellent practice test of 92% on both sections and took the online test the night before my real exam. When the online exam was graded, I got a 76, but after looking at the explanations, the answer key was rife with errors. I was closer to 84% as far as I could tell. Not a great confidence booster before the test. I see no excuse for this.

HOW I USED THE GUIDE: I started studying about 2 weeks out, focusing on the ALT section (there are 2 different tests in the guide, and the Border Patrol sends you a prep manual that has an ALT test). My biggest recommendation is to translate ALL words, not just those requested, and in the section where you indicate if each of the three words is RIGHT or WRONG, if it is wrong, figure out the CORRECT word. You will have a better understanding of the formation of words. If you aren't right, you'll see what you were thinking at the time and make a note of it. (My biggest issue was remembering adverbs DID NOT always end in "LY"- it was reflexive because of the examples in the guide). I took each practice test 2 times (1st x test 1: 65%, 1st x test 2: 72%, 1st x BPA manual 68%, 2nd x test 1: 90%, 2nd x test 2: 92%, 2nd x BPA manual 2nd: 89%). I was averaging 65 minutes per section. I was really amazed that by the end of two weeks, I could read the Alternate Language without using the translation sheet- it was funny. After you get the hang of the ALT, practice answering the questions without writing in the booklet- you won't be able to on test day either.

RECAP: I guess some who did not prepare for the Border Patrol test felt like they were trying out for the minor leagues or something. This is to be a Border Patrol AGENT, a federal agent of the United States. Study the ALT and work on your verbal reasoning- put the time in and get the reward.

Editorial Review:

Several outstanding books have been written about the road to September 11. The Search for Al Qaeda has a different mission. While it does review how al Qaeda was created and developed, it focuses more closely on what has happened to the terrorist network since that awful day. According to Riedel, al Qaeda's ultimate goals are to drive America from the Muslim world (the ummah); to destroy Israel; and to create a jihadist caliphate along the lines of the Ottoman Empire at its height. The book reveals al Qaeda's multi-pronged strategy for accomplishing those goals; draw America into the type of "bleeding wars" that drove the Soviets from Afghanistan, build a safe haven for al Qaeda in Pakistan; develop other "franchises" in the Islamic world that can overthrow pro-American regimes; and conduct more Western attacks along the lines of 9-11 or the transit bombings in Madrid and London. Bruce Riedel is an expert on the Middle East and South Asia, with 30 years of policymaking experience in regional diplomacy and counterterrorism. He draws on this experience and firsthand knowledge in profiling the four most important figures in the al Qaeda movement: Osama bin Laden, its creator and charismatic leader: ideologue Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian co-leader of al Qaeda and its principal spokesman; Abu Musaib al Zarqawi, the tenacious leader of al Qaeda in Iraq until his death in 2006; and Mullah Omar, Taliban host to al Qaeda. These profiles provide the base from which Riedel delivers a much clearer understanding of al Qaeda and what must be done to counter it.

The Crunch Time series is great for the Law School Exams-- the "cheater" charts are especially helpful. I'm glad that I held on to the
Crim Pro and Evidence books. In my work as a JAG attorney, I have found that they are perfect memory joggers to help with my part-time prosecution duties.

It is a very thorough commercial outline. However, there are many details that are being left out. In brief, it is not a perfect substitute for actual textbooks.

Don't Believe Pretentious Twits 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic book, and what's more, it has served as a model and inspiration for the many (many, many) football hooligan books that followed.

I won't really comment on the absolute cliched tripe served up by one reviewer who gave this book one star, but I would point out that he might want to take some time out from an all-knowing banality spouting, error decrying, schedule, and consult a calendar.

Among The Thugs - 1993. Most of the others? 1999 and later, including the 2005(!) Gardner tome. This book, almost alone, spawned a veritable minor industry of Football Hooligan memoirs and reportage. Don't believe me? Head over to amazon.co.uk and check it out all the related items with this book over there.

By the way, I think it was sort of the point of the experiment that an editor of a (very popular in the right circles) literary magazine like Granta went and did what he did, and reported what he saw. And in the Granta tradition, he expounds a bit on What It All Means. That gets a little dull at times, but by no means lessens the overall interest of the book.

Among the Thugs is not meant to be a piece of documentary journalism, oral history, or a PhD thesis. It's a subjective and personal account, and the author makes no bones about that. The author did, objectively, get beaten to a pulp by Italian cops, so there's some credibility right there.

Editorial Review:

They have names like Barmy Bernie, Daft Donald, and Steamin' Sammy. They like lager (in huge quantities), the Queen, football clubs (especially Manchester United), and themselves. Their dislike encompasses the rest of the known universe, and England's soccer thugs express it in ways that range from mere vandalism to riots that terrorize entire cities. Now Bill Buford, editor of the prestigious journal Granta, enters this alternate society and records both its savageries and its sinister allure with the social imagination of a George Orwell and the raw personal engagement of a Hunter Thompson.

Helpful for learning the intentional torts 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I entered Law School with a great deal of reluctance about any sort of commercial aids, especially flash cards. However, I have since discovered that some commercial aids are helpful with certain aspects of studying. These Torts flashcards have been valuable in helping me learn the elements of the various intentional torts, and spotting those torts in a hypothetical fact pattern.

This product should not be your primary means of learning torts, but I recommend them as a supplement, especially learning the elements of the Intentional torts!

Great for Test Preparations 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is extremely useful in preparing for a torts exam. In fact, the fact patterns on one of the questions was so great that my professor copied a large portion of it on our final exam question (the ethical side of that can be debated with Emory).

Good product but not economical. 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I would have given this book five stars, however, it's not economical. Aspen publishers (publishers of this Q & A series) also publish Finz Multistate Method. The Finz product contains 196 tort multiple choice questions whereas the siegel's tort Q & A only has 92. Keep in mind that these products are published by the same publisher, therefore, the questions in the siegel's series appear in the Finz Multistate Method. Furthermore, the Finz product has Contracts, Property, Constitutional Law, and Evidence questions. However, the Finz product does not have essay questions but you could always google old essay exams and answers. By purchasing the Finz Multistate Method, you'll end up saving more money, have the convenience of having all the questions in one book, and have many more questions.

Eye opener for most Americans. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The cult of death called Islam is spreading like the plague across the globe and only because it is allowed by the myopic, historically ignorant, illogical, naive and morally rudderless Western civilization. This book attempts to wake up the dozing Westerners who are more obsessed with saving the whales, trees, caribou and spotted owls while ignoring the danger growing right under their very noses. Westerners who are more concerned about multiculturalism and political correctness, and not offending anyone than with real nighmare sneaking in diguised as exotic "religion of peace".

Editorial Review:

When London was hit by suicide bombers in July 2005, the dirty little secret was finally out. Great Britain had been the European hub of Islamist extremism for more than a decade. Under the noses of British intelligence, a network of terrorists and their sympathizers had used Britain to plot, finance, recruit and train for atrocities in the United States and around the world. The scale of this activity was so large that exasperated European security agencies dubbed Britain's capital city Londonistan.

Editorial Review:

Does allowing people to own or carry guns deter violent crime? Or does it simply cause more citizens to harm each other? Directly challenging common perceptions about gun control, legal scholar John Lott presents the most rigorously comprehensive data analysis ever done on crime statistics and right-to-carry laws. This timely and provocative work comes to the startling conclusion: more guns mean less crime. In this paperback edition, Lott has expanded the research through 1996, incorporating new data available from states that passed right-to-carry and other gun laws since the book's publication as well as new city-level statistics.

"Lott's pro-gun argument has to be examined on the merits, and its chief merit is lots of data. . . . If you still disagree with Lott, at least you will know what will be required to rebut a case that looks pretty near bulletproof."—Peter Coy, Business Week

"By providing strong empirical evidence that yet another liberal policy is a cause of the very evil it purports to cure, he has permanently changed the terms of debate on gun control. . . . Lott's book could hardly be more timely. . . . A model of the meticulous application of economics and statistics to law and policy."—John O. McGinnis, National Review

"His empirical analysis sets a standard that will be difficult to match. . . . This has got to be the most extensive empirical study of crime deterrence that has been done to date."—Public Choice

"For anyone with an open mind on either side of this subject this book will provide a thorough grounding. It is also likely to be the standard reference on the subject for years to come."—Stan Liebowitz, Dallas Morning News

"A compelling book with enough hard evidence that even politicians may have to stop and pay attention. More Guns, Less Crime is an exhaustive analysis of the effect of gun possession on crime rates."—James Bovard, Wall Street Journal

"John Lott documents how far 'politically correct' vested interests are willing to go to denigrate anyone who dares disagree with them. Lott has done us all a service by his thorough, thoughtful, scholarly approach to a highly controversial issue."—Milton Friedman

Expensive, but worth it 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Now this is one expensive book, but it's well worth it in my opinion. I just finished a 60+ page thesis paper for college and this was one of the Computer Forensics books that I referenced/used a source. It's a thorough book that covers a lot more than just Computer Forensics, but rather aspects of the whole of Forensic Science. The full color pages are detailed and the case studies are thorough.

Editorial Review:

Intro to Forensic Science courses - in CJ, Forensic Science, Chemistry programs Criminalistics aims at making the subject of forensic science comprehensible to a wide variety of readers who are planning on being aligned with the forensic science profession. The text strives to make the technology of the modern crime laboratory clear to the non-scientist.
