This is a very good book about school law. 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I like this book very much because as the book says, it summarizes school law in a nutshell. I have found it very helpful to refer to while taking a school law class. It is any easy read compared to my school law text, and hits the main points of court decisions.

A must for every teacher. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book covers school law in a clear and concise manner. The language is easily understood and should be on the desk of every teacher who is concerned about the welfare of children.

Law of Schools, Students and Teachers 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very practicle text for a survey school law course at the university level. I used the text with Masters candidates and supplemented the text with on-line comprehensive land-mark case law reviews.

I would use the text again.

Editorial Review:

Laws governing schools, students, and teachers are developed to protect the individuals involved in education. Written by experts in the field, this text deals with many student issues, such as attendance, due process rights, freedom of speech, search and seizure, discrimination, discipline, and testing. Also addresses religion and employment terms and conditions for teachers, along with their constitutional rights.

Definite must for all who become involved with the deaf. 4 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

As a deaf person who has struggled long and hard to get my PhD in science and science education, this book with its history comes as no surprise to me. Harlan Lane is a hearing person who has taken up the cause of those in the deaf world with a vengence, and I do mean with a vengence! Dr. Lane has a tendency to write with immense vigor and sometimes his books tend to go overboard in stating the case. However, this book is a classic and is definitely one of his best written ones.

The history of the deaf in the United STates is strewn with great minds and small minds. We have had people who supported our education, and those who mistakenly viewed us as being less worthy of the normal needs and desires of life. This includes having a life, getting an education, living in society, being able to find gainful employment, getting married, and having children. The research of Dr. Lane is impeccable, and I have found it useful to refer to him in papers and use his references/bibliography for my own work on discrimination against the deaf in science education. Even if I sometimes do not agree with Dr. Lane's biased outlook on history of the deaf, I certainly appreciate all that he has done to bring the sometimes terrible prejudices and misdeeds to the attention of the hearing public. Yes, the deaf were and continue to be discriminated against, just as other differences are whether a disability or racial/cultural minority. Those who wish to understand the extent to which this discrimination went, should definitely read this book. To an extent, those of us with life-long hearing differences are learning to advocate for ourselves, and take pride in our accomplishments. It is thanks to people like Dr. Lane that we have been able to reach this point over the past 40 years. Karen Sadler, Science education, University of Pittsburgh

Editorial Review:

The authoritative statement on the deaf, their education, and their struggle against prejudice.

Response to Uninformed Review 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The previous reviewer obviously has not read the book that he rated so low. Harold J. Rosen is an Honorary member of The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), an honor given to few CSI members. This book, in its first edition, predates the CSI Manual of Practice, and it has been updated over several decades.

Construction Specifications Writing: Principles and Practices has been the leading textbook for teaching construction specifications at colleges and universities.

The 4th edition has been superseded by an expanded and updated 5th edition, co-authored by this reviewer, that is consistent with the CSI Manual of Practice and includes more examples and resources than CSI's MOP.

Editorial Review:

This edition of the standard construction specifications writing guide has been updated to include new information on linking specifications to computer databases and to other parts of the design process. The guide shows how to organize documents, generate well-researched master texts, automate specifications, write more condensed text, use full-time specifications consultants, and use the new knowledge-based specifying systems.

Editorial Review:

On June 12, 1939, in dedicating the Baseball Hall of Fame, Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis proclaimed: "I should like to dedicate this museum to all America, to lovers of good sportsmanship, healthy bodies, clean minds. For those are the principles of baseball." The game of baseball mirrors our history, our identity, and our culture. And, if baseball is the heart of America, the legal process provides the sinews that hold it in place. It was the legal process that allowed William Hulbert to bring club owners toghether in a New York City hotel room in 1876 to form the National League, and ninety years later it allowed Marvin Miller to change a management-funded fraternity of ballplayers into the strongest trade union in America. But how does collective bargaining and labor arbitration work in the major leagues? Why is baseball exempt from the antitrust laws? In Legal Bases, Roger I. Abrams has assembled an all-star baseball law team whose stories illuminate the sometimes uproarious, sometimes ignominous relationship between law and baseball that has made the business of baseball a truly American institution.Leading off in Abrams' lineup is Monte Ward, the hall of Fame pitcher-shortstop and graduate of Columbia Law School who organized the first baseball union. After Curt Flood's valiant, but doomed, effort in federal court, Andy Messersmith strikes out the reserve system in arbitration. And in the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Judge Sonia Sotomayor drives in the winning run of the 1994 major league players' strike. Along the way, Abrams also examines such issues as drug use and gambling, enforcement of contracts, and the rights of owners and managers. The stories he tells are not limited to his official lineup, but include appearances by a host of other characters from baseball magnate Albert Spaulding and New York Knickerbocker Alexander Joy Cartwright to "Acting Commissioner" Bud Selig and Jackie Robinson. And Abrams does not limit himself to the history of baseball and the legal process but also speculates on the implications of the 1996 collective bargaining agreement and those other issues like intellectual property, eminent domain, and gender equity that may provide the all-star baseball law stories of the future. Author note: Roger I.Abrams is a major league baseball salary arbitrator who has arbitrated cases involving Ron Darling and Brett Butler. He is also Dean and Richardson Professor of Law at Northeastern University School of Law and has taught and written in the field of sports law for more than a decade. He is the author of The Money Pitch, also published by Temple University Press.

Editorial Review:

Whether assessing general family functioning or specific areas of conflict, professionals ordering, conducting, or reviewing child custody evaluations require sound knowledge of three interrelated fields: up-todate legal issues, psychological findings, and forensic procedures. A Comprehensive Guide to Child Custody Evaluations covers these three essential areas to walk readers through the evaluation process clearly and concisely. This unique interdisciplinary book emphasizes professional ethics, children’s psychological well-being, and clear communication among all parties as keys to resolving disputes with efficiency and thoroughness, and minimizing the chances of children and their families getting lost in red tape.

Among the Guide’s features: • Legal standards for custody evaluations and recommendations. • Procedures for conducting custody evaluations, with the latest data on psychological testing, interviewing children, and home observations. • Guidelines for writing: evaluation reports, orders for evaluations, parenting plans. • Legal and ethical standards for critiquing evaluation reports. • Current legal and research-based information on special issues, including alternative family arrangements, medical problems, child sexual abuse, estrangement, and parental abduction. • Reference and resource sections provide additional support. • Companion CD includes dozens of forms, checklists, letters, and other documents ready to download, customize, and print.

The Guide’s interdisciplinary approach will be of invaluable aid to forensic mental health professionals in conducting evaluations and communicating results, family and probate judges in ordering and assessing custody evaluations, and family attorneys in deciding how to approach various aspects of the family situation, whether to request a custody evaluation, and how to proceed after the custody evaluation is done.

Great Supplement, So much better than legalines 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The High Court Case Summaries are great commercial brief books, but have much better features than legalines. They provide a more concise brief and usually keep them to one page instead of the legalines who bunch all of their material together. The also have the quick facts and memory image as well as a black letter law and definitions section. I wish they had a high courts case summary book for all my classes.

Not the most recent version 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Its a fine book but what I found out after I recieved it is that its keyed to the First Edition not the most recent edition. So its missing a few cases.

Editorial Review:

Provide extensive analysis of cases in Chemerinsky's Constitutional Law casebook. Included in the case analysis are the case procedural basis, fact, issues, decision and rationale, and analysis. Additional quick memory aids include headnotes, instant facts, black letter rules, case vocabulary, and graphics. Each chapter begins with an introduction of its concepts presented in simple terms, and an alphabetical table of cases is provided.
