While the information is incontrovertible as it pertains to assessing signs in the development of children, there is scarce information for assessing and living with adults. While I could identify symptoms in the history of my adult child, living with an adult with AS one looks for avenues of treatment and/or perspective. I found the latter to be sorely lacking.

This is fantastic book. It empowers parents to take control of negociating their child's education needs so that we no longer feel like we are twisitng in the wind.

I do not recall any information regarding emails. Many teachers and school officials use emails as a primary method of communication. I wish this book spent some time talking about to email or not to email, how to email....

How the fight against AIDS was initially lost.... 5 out of 5 stars.

Even though I've been fortunate to never have had AIDS touch my life, this book still brought home a powerhouse of feelings - shame at seeing how poorly so many of our fellow human beings were treated, anger at the way their suffering was treated as insignificant, grief at how many people have been lost to such an insidious disease and outrage at the way our government - and governmental health agencies - were willing to play politics when peoples lives were at stake.

Randy Shilts creates a moving, troubling narrative that gives "And the Band Played On" more of the feeling of a novel than of a report or documentation of a study. You get to know the people he writes about enough to care about them - and about what happens to them.

In more recent years, there have been some questions raised about his identification of Gaeton Dugas as "Patient Zero," with current thinking that it took a number of different people to bring AIDS to the western world and begin spreading here. Obviously, this is a point that will likely never be entirely resolved, but even if you disagree with Shilts theory, the rest of the book is still very informative and well worth reading.

I have used this book to help teach foster children in both a group and individual setting. It works well for children of all levels of functioning, not solely special needs. The examples in the book are well writen and cover all aspects of a childs socialization in school, at home, and with peers. I did have to omit a couple of worksheets that gave examples of how not to behave as it presented ideas that would be copied by low functioning or defiant kids. The systematic review of social skills utilizing worksheets and discussions has made this book a great addition to my work library.

An inspiring legal thriller set against the backdrop of the war on terror, The Challenge tells the inside story of a historic Supreme Court showdown. At its center are a Navy JAG and a young constitutional law professor who, in the aftermath of 9/11, find themselves defending their nation in the unlikeliest of ways: by suing the president of the United States on behalf of an accused terrorist in order to prevent the American government from breaking the law and violating the Constitution.  

Jonathan Mahler traces the journey of their client, Salim Ahmed Hamdan, from the Yemeni mosque where he was first recruited for jihad in 1998, through his years working as a driver for Osama bin Laden, to his capture in Afghanistan in November 2001 and his subsequent transfer to Guantanamo Bay. It was there that Hamdan was designated by President Bush to be tried before a special military tribunal and assigned a military lawyer to represent him, a thirty-five-year-old graduate student of the Naval Academy, Lieutenant Commander Charles Swift.                      

No one expected Swift to mount much of a defense. Not only were the rules of the tribunals, America’s first in more than fifty years, stacked against him, his superiors at the Pentagon were pressuring him to persuade Hamdan to plead guilty. But Swift didn’t believe that the tribunals were either legal or fair, so he enlisted a young Georgetown law professor named Neal Katyal to help him sue the Bush administration over their legality. In the spring of 2006, Katyal, who had almost no trial experience, took the case to the Supreme Court and won. good source book for those who are making their way through the permit and inspection process. Seems to be complete, but misses a few things such as smoke alarm requirements. An index would have been really helpful.

Completely lacking in empathy 1 out of 5 stars.

The author is just dripping in self-righteousness. He places 100% of the blame for bad situations on the decisions the poor have made. He shows no grace or empathy. His observations aren't necessarily wrong- but he extends his assumptions to everyone in the same situation.

This is how he explains that abused women choose to be abused:
"At first, of course, my female patients deny that the violence of their men was foreseeable. But when I ask them whether they think I would have recognized it in advance, the great majority- nine out of ten- reply, yes, of course. And when asked how they think I would have done so, they enumerate precisely the factors that would have led me to that conclusion. So their blindess is willful." P40

These sorts of explanations are given for all different types of ailments of the impoverished.

Life at the Bottom reminds me, in many ways, of Down and Out in Paris and London. It is an author looking at the lower classes from a fairly intimate and not academic view. Like Orwell's book there's not a ton of sociological jargon or academic noodling. That makes the book extremely readable but it also limits it to being a bit more anecdotal than far reaching.
