The Hobo Philosopher 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is exactly what I thought it was. It is a concise synopsis of labor laws in the U.S. I wanted such a guide to help in my research on this subject. My first disappointment was that it didn't go back into the Colonial period but as I think about it that would be a whole other book entirely. This book deals with the actual laws that were made and describes them briefly. It is a good reference book and that is what I wanted.

Editorial Review:

The text provides a review of the early regulation - or lack thereof - of employer-employee relations, a more detailed frame of the modern National Labor Review Board, and a look at the primary legal issues, such as picketing, employer responses, and the duty to bargain. The text provides the scope and highlights you need to excel in understanding this field. This will enable you to answer exam questions more quickly and accurately, and enhance your skills as an attorney.

Editorial Review:

About the book--
The title, Aviation and the Law, is an intentional reflection upon the nature of law, for aviation law is but an integral part of all law. Therefore, this book starts from the beginning, to develop for the reader a basic understanding of the law, of its philosophy, and of its structure and due process, before addressing "aviation and the law" per se. The book is assembled in six major sections, the first of which gives definition to law, touches upon notions of justice, fairness, the underlying theories of law, and upon morality.
Section Two addresses criminal law as related to air transportation. Of primary concern are the issues of airport and airline security, air piracy, and other acts of criminal violence. Section Three, is an overview of civil (or tort) law in the field of aviation, focusing upon pertinent issues in their respective specialized areas, and supported by applicable case law. Section Four looks at airports and the role of government. Section Five deals with manufacturers' liability, the transfer of liability through insurance, and liability for accidents, including an overview of the government's responsibility to investigate aircraft accidents and to promote aviation safety. The final section is an introduction to international aviation law, including its historical development, the Warsaw System, bilateral governmental agreements, international competition, and exemplary court cases in this area.
As with previous editions, the purpose of this book is to provide sudents of aviation with a basic understanding of law, of the legal system, and of how the principles of law may be applied to the many aspects of air commerce and air transportation. Added to this latest edition are updates on the federal aviation security provisions since September 11, 2001, expansion in the area of international air law, as well as court cases of note decided since the last edition.

Why Henry doesn't get around much anymore 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you wonder why Henry Kissinger can't jump on a plane to just any old where these days, this is the book for you. Hitchens carefully lays out an indictment for war crimes and other misbehavior that have led more than one country to ask the wily professor to appear in court. You always knew that someone who was THAT close to Johnson, Nixon and both Bushes couldn't be a goodun, but it's much worse than you think. After reading it I am left contemplating Kissinger's Nobel Peace Prize and shaking my head.

Editorial Review:

With the detention of Augusto Pinochet, and intense international pressure for the arrest of Slobodan Milosovic, the possibility of international law acting against tyrants around the world is emerging as a reality. In this incendiary book, Hitchens takes the floor as prosecuting counsel and mounts a devastating indictment of a man whose ambitions and ruthlessness have directly resulted in both individual murders and widespread, indiscriminate slaughter. He investigates and reveals Kissingers' involvement in: the deliberate mass killings of civilian populations in Indochina; the deliberate collusion in mass murder and assassination in Bangladesh; the personal suborning and planning of a murder, of a senior constitutional officer in a democratic nation that the USA was not war with - Chile; the incitement and enabling of a mass genocide in East Timor; and the personal involvement in the kidnap and murder of a journalist living in Washinton DC.

History Proved Him Right 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

It's funny how some negative reviews of this book spoke about how wrong Greider was and how right corporate superheros like Jack Welch were. Now in 2003 as America struggles to rebuild after the savage [things] that these corporate overlords have done (Enron? Worldcom? Global Crossing?) we see just how accurate Greider's predications were. The men who rose to power in the 1990's didn't get there because they loved all humanity, they got there because they wanted power above all else. It wasn't the job or the love for their products, it was for money. If they had to fire tens of thouands of people, if they had to bankrupt the company, that was fine. THEY got to keep their millions in the form of Golden Parachutes. History has now born this simple truth out. Power doesn't neccesarilly corrupt, but absolutely corrupt people seek power at any cost.

Great for all cyclists 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is perfect for anyone who gets on a bicycle. Although you would think the subject matter would be boring at times, the author discusses everything in an interesting context. Must read for cyclists.

Editorial Review:

According to statistics compiled by the League of American Bicyclists, more than 57 million Americans rode a bicycle in 2005. Of these, more than 9 million describe themselves as "active cyclists" — weekend riders, off-road riders, commuters, and amateur and professional athletes. These 9 million face the daily hazards of commuting in traffic, overenthusiastic dogs, faulty roads, harassment, road rage, and bicycle theft. This book was written for them. Bicycling and the Law is designed to be the primary resource for cyclists faced with a legal question. It provides readers with information that can help them avoid many legal problems in the first place, and informs them of their rights, their responsibilities, and what steps to take if they do encounter a legal problem. This useful guide makes the law both entertaining and comprehensible, presenting an accurate and thorough explanation of the laws governing bicycles and the activity of bicycling.

Editorial Review:

Across the nation, construction projects large and small—from hospitals to schools to simple home improvements—are spiraling out of control. Delays and cost overruns have come to seem “normal,” even as they drain our wallets and send our blood pressure skyrocketing. In Broken Buildings, Busted Budgets, prominent construction attorney Barry B. LePatner builds a powerful case for change in America’s sole remaining “mom and pop” industry—an industry that consumes $1.23 trillion and wastes at least $120 billion each year.
With three decades of experience representing clients that include eminent architects and engineers, as well as corporations, institutions, and developers, LePatner has firsthand knowledge of the bad management, ineffective supervision, and insufficient investment in technology that plagues the risk-averse construction industry. In an engaging and direct style, he here pinpoints the issues that underlie the industry’s woes while providing practical tips for anyone in the business of building, including advice on the precise language owners should use during contract negotiations.
Armed with Broken Buildings, Busted Budgets, everyone involved in the purchase or renovation of a building or any structure—from homeowners seeking to remodel to civic developers embarking on large-scale projects—has the information they need to change this antiquated industry, one project at a time.

“LePatner describes what is wrong with the current system and suggests ways that architects can help—by retaking their rightful place as master builders.”—Fred A. Bernstein, Architect Magazine “Every now and then, a major construction project is completed on time and on budget. Everyone is amazed. . . . Barry LePatner thinks this exception should become the rule. . . . A swift kick to the construction industry.”—James R. Hagerty, Wall Street Journal

Less than useless. 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Not much use if specific info is required. References a lot of other specs but provides little or no information that can actually be applied to design a fire fighting system. I would not buy it again or recommend purchase.

It's the Gold Standard 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is a required reference for anyone dealing with fire code issues for any reason. There have been many revisions of previous codes, so buying a personal copy is recommended even though it is expensive. Best if used in conjunction with the latest edition of the International Building Code.

Editorial Review:

The 2006 International Fire Code®,coordinated with the 2006 International Building Code®, references national standards to comprehensively address fire safety in new and existing buildings. It provides modern, up-to-date fire code, and addresses conditions hazardous to life and property from fire, explosion, handling or use of hazardous materials, and the use and occupancy of buildings and premises. Prescriptive- and performance- based approaches to fire prevention and fire protection systems are emphasized. Topics addressed include fire department access, fire hydrants, automatic sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, hazardous materials storage and use, and fire safety requirements for new and existing buildings and premises.

Finally! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've never been able to understand why there was no book out there that just focuses on LSAT reading comp. I mean, this section actually has more questions than the games. I've been studying for the LSAT for a few months now and always wished there was something that could help me in this section. So I was really happy when I discovered this book.

I like how they broke things down by logical structure instead of topic (why didn't anyone else think of this?) There is a good treatment of all the different passage types and question types, and a lot of examples, including dozens of real passages. The writing style is clear and doesn't dumb things down. I recommend getting the Examkrackers complete study package and some official tests, and that's all you need.

Will it really help boost your RC score? Maybe. 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm going to review this book from the perspective of someone who has already done some LSAT prep and has trouble with reading comprehension because I think that's the kind of person this book appeals to primarily.

There are many reasons why a person may be doing poorly in reading comprehension.

If you had no time limit, would you be able to answer the question? Did you misread the passage? Did you misread the question? Did you comprehend the passage? The answer to these questions will determine where you will be able to gain improvement.

If you are getting questions wrong because you don't really understand what the questions are asking you, then this book will help. This book lays out the question types and helps you understand how to answer them.

However, I find that usually, this isn't most people's problem. For the most part, the difficulty of RC is time management. After the fact, a question like "the passage mentions each of the following EXCEPT" is pretty easy. You have to scan through the passage to see what it mentions and what it doesn't. Pretty easy right?

Well, when you are trying to read the passage AND answer everything in under 9 minutes, it becomes a lot tougher. A lot of gains come from learning to be more efficient in the way you recall information and spend less time going back and forth from passage to questions.

This book isn't bad. But if your primary problem is time management, I think your results with this book will be limited because this isn't what the book focuses on.

I mention that because if you're someone who has been having problems with RC and see this book and think "Yes! This will solve all of my problems", I think you might be disappointed.

Again, that is not to say it's a bad book, but if you're getting 5-6 wrong and want to get it down to 2-3, I'm not convinced this book will get you there. If you are getting 10+ wrong, this book will probably help you.
