Editorial Review:

With a new preface by the author, this reissue of Thomas Sowell’s classic study of decision making updates his seminal work in the context of The Vision of the Annointed, Sowell, one of America’s most celebrated public intellectuals, describes in concrete detail how knowledge is shared and disseminated throughout modern society. He warns that society suffers from an ever-widening gap between firsthand knowledge and decision making—a gap that threatens not only our economic and political efficiency, but our very freedom because actual knowledge gets replaced by assumptions based on an abstract and elitist social vision f what ought to be.Knowledge and Decisions, a winner of the 1980 Law and Economics Center Prize, was heralded as a ”landmark work” and selected for this prize ”because of its cogent contribution to our understanding of the differences between the market process and the process of government.” In announcing the award, the center acclaimed Sowell, whose ”contribution to our understanding of the process of regulation alone would make the book important, but in reemphasizing the diversity and efficiency that the market makes possible, [his] work goes deeper and becomes even more significant.”

Editorial Review:

“A masterful examination of the pathetic rush to judgment in the Duke rape case.” —John Grisham

The full story of the Duke Lacrosse case, by the authors who broke it

In this American tragedy, Stuart Taylor, Jr., and KC Johnson argue, law enforcement, a campaigning prosecutor, biased journalists, and left-leaning academics repeatedly refused to pursue the truth while scapegoats were made of these young men, recklessly tarnishing their lives.
Until Proven Innocent is the only book that covers all five aspects of the case (personal, legal, academic, political, and media) in a comprehensive fashion.  It is also the only book to include interviews with all three of the defendants, their families, and their legal teams. And now it includes an up-to-date epilogue detailing the aftershocks and conclusion of the case.
Taylor and Johnson’s coverage of the Duke case was the earliest, most honest, and most comprehensive in the country, and here they take on the idiocies and dishonesty of right- and left-wingers alike, shedding new light on the danger of a cultural tendency toward media-fueled travesties of justice. The context of the Duke case has vast import, and in its full telling, it is captivating nonfiction with broad political, racial, and cultural relevance to our times.

“Taylor and Johnson have made a gripping contribution to the literature of the wrongly accused.” —The New York Times Book Review

Until Proven Innocent is a stunning book.” —The Wall Street Journal

“Vivid, at times chilling . . . their most biting scorn is aimed at the ‘academic McCarthyism’ that they say has infected top-rate American universities like Duke.” —Newsweek

“A superb new book . . . a book that not only reads like a legal thriller, but also exposes deep problems with America’s legal system and academic culture.” —The Economist

Helped My Career 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

As an online paralegal student at the Washington Online Learning Institute, (WOLI) for short, I bought this book towards the end of my certificate program. It was quite useful in putting a lot of information in perspective. I had a course in career preparation at WOLI and this book reinforced and expanded upon that information so the combination of knowledge from WOLI and this book was really powerful. This book is basic, but it is accurate and very useful for someone entering the field. I ended up with a job just two weeks after graduating and this book helped for sure. So I would recommend it. I think it is interesting that Amazon bundles this book with the Statsky paralegal book because we used the Statsky book in three courses at WOLI. So I would recommend both books, actually. This is a good book for a person who is serious about entering the paralegal field, but keep in mind you should really get certified if you want to be truly successful. The days of just learning on the job are pretty much over, especially in terms of advancement in a law firm, which is a valid point made in this book. Recommended.

A STYLISTIC ACHIEVEMENT ALSO 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The original three volumes of this book changed my life, my world, my soul. There is little I can add to what others have already said except for one thing. This bitter humor, the voice of incredulity, the moments when Stalin's mask slips (for instance a scientific article are about the discovery of a frozen mammoth in the Siberian tundra and the casual reference to how it tasted - only Gulag prisoners would eat a 10,000 year old mammoth).

Overall let me put it this way. This is the greatest exercise in SUSTAINED IRONIC TONE in the history of literature. The derisive, incredulous, witnessing voice never stops digging for the Truth.

Editorial Review:

Drawing on his own incarceration and exile, as well as on evidence from more than 200 fellow prisoners and Soviet archives, Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn reveals the entire apparatus of Soviet repression -- the state within the state that ruled all-powerfully.

Through truly Shakespearean portraits of its victims -- men, women, and children -- we encounter secret police operations, labor camps and prisons; the uprooting or extermination of whole populations, the "welcome" that awaited Russian soldiers who had been German prisoners of war. Yet we also witness the astounding moral courage of the incorruptible, who, defenseless, endured great brutality and degradation. The Gulag Archipelago 1918-1956 -- a grisly indictment of a regime, fashioned here into a veritable literary miracle -- has now been updated with a new introduction that includes the fall of the Soviet Union and Solzhenitsyn's move back to Russia.

Overall, I recommend it. 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book was assigned to one of my MBA classes. The book itself was a good source of reference not only for my business law class but also to other two classes. The book's language is simple and easy to understand. The only flaw I found about this this book was that some cases were complex and I had to refer to actual law books and regulations. Overall, I recommend this book.

Helpful but overpriced 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book has some genuinely helpful tidbits on legal practice, but take a look at the price and realize that it is a mere 135 pages long (disregard the 200 pages listed above) and bear in mind that each page is basically the size of a large index card. If you are expecting something the size of a textbook, you are in for an unpleasant surprise. I think this would be an excellent purchase if it were priced in the $6-$7 range.

Every Young Lawyer (and some old lawyers!) Should Read This Book!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Curmudgeon's Guide is a no nonsense book about the realities of being a practicing attorney. The book pulls no punches in telling it like it is for an associate starting out in a big firm. Law School's do not prepare their students for the real world, this book will uncover the truths that all will need to discover at some point (learn it the easy way or the hard way...but you will learn it!).

I am not a lawyer, but did spend many years working in the legal industry. As an expert in legal marketing and business development, I have worked closely with associates and partners and have seen first hand all the examples that Mark Herrmann exposes in the book.

The chapter on working with your legal secretary is worth the whole price of the book (It is expensive, but if you take the advice in the book to heart, you will profit more that the $35 you spend on the book).

The only area the book comes up short is in the last chapter on developing and growing a practice. While everything the author says is 100% correct, he does not go far enough. Large firms today have marketing and business development departments with wonderful staffs. Herrmann does not address the importance of working closely with these team members and treating them with the respect they deserve. A good relationship with the marketing and biz dev staff can make building a lawyer's reputation a whole lot easier!!!

I will be recommending this book in my presentations and speeches to law firms around the country.

Editorial Review:

This collection of essays written by The Curmudgeon, offers practical, honest and you need to know this advice for surviving and thriving in a law firm. The book covers the basics of law practice and law firm etiquette, from doing effective research and writing to dressing for success, dealing with staff and clients and building a law practice. Concise, humorous and full of valuable (albeit curmudgeonly) insight, this is a must-read for every newly minted law school graduate or new lawyer.

Legal Terms Defined in Everyday Language 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This book defines legal terms in easily understood English. In some cases, it gives an example of a situation to which the legal term might apply in order to help illustrate the meaning. It would be a very useful addition to anyone's reference library.

Good enough for me 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Barron's "Dictionary of Legal Terms" is a solid text. When I asked a law friend of mine which law dictionary I should purchase he told me that "Black's" was the best law dictionary out there. However, it is rather expensive at eighty or so dollars. Even the pocket version of the text is at least twenty dollars. So I sprang for this law dictionary at about eight dollars.

I was quite impressed and quite educated by the Barron's work. It was informative and complete, yet simple enough for a non-law student to understand. At my local bookstore I compared the Barron's dictionary with some others and found this one more to my liking because it provides examples for certain definitions; something the other texts did not.

The only reason that I did not give this 5 stars is that it is not as complete as some of the other books that I looked at. This version has "more than 2500 legal terms" and the other books were all about 3000. However, I have not yet come across a word or jargon that I was unable to find in this book so I am not sure what the other 500+ words or phrases are.

Solid book. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Updated to include new terms such as “civil union” and to incorporate recent changes in laws and judicial interpretations, this handy dictionary cuts through the complexities of legal jargon and presents definitions and explanations that can be understood by non-lawyers. Approximately 2,500 terms are given with definitions and explanations for the benefit of consumers, business proprietors, legal beneficiaries, investors, property owners, litigants, and all others who have dealings with the law. Terms are arranged alphabetically from Abandonment and Abatable Nuisance, all the way through to Writ, Yellow Dog Contract, and Zoning.
