Editorial Review:

Teachers struggle every day to bring quality instruction to their students. Beset by lists of content standards and accompanying "high-stakes" accountability tests, many educators sense that both teaching and learning have been redirected in ways that are potentially impoverishing for those who teach and those who learn. Educators need a model that acknowledges the centrality of standards but also ensures that students truly understand content and can apply it in meaningful ways. For many educators, Understanding by Design addresses that need.

Simultaneously, teachers find it increasingly difficult to ignore the diversity of the learners who populate their classrooms. Few teachers find their work effective or satisfying when they simply "serve up" a curriculum--even an elegant one--to students with no regard for their varied learning needs. For many educators, Differentiated Instruction offers a framework for addressing learner variance as a critical component of instructional planning.

In this book the two models converge, providing readers fresh perspectives on two of the greatest contemporary challenges for educators: crafting powerful curriculum in a standards-dominated era and ensuring academic success for the full spectrum of learners. Each model strengthens the other. Understanding by Design is predominantly a curriculum design model that focuses on what we teach. Differentiated Instruction focuses on whom we teach, where we teach, and how we teach. Carol Ann Tomlinson and Jay McTighe show you how to use the principles of backward design and differentiation together to craft lesson plans that will teach essential knowledge and skills for the full spectrum of learners.

Connecting content and kids in meaningful ways is what teachers strive to do every day. In tandem, UbD and DI help educators meet that goal by providing structures, tools, and guidance for developing curriculum and instruction that bring to students the best of what we know about effective teaching and learning.

A good resource! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great resource to help design an effective layout for a classroom. It takes all of the elements of the classroom into account: whole group, word study, readers' workshop areas and more! I also liked the spiral binding because it provided easy access to the desired page. I would recommend it for any elementary ed teacher.

Good book 5 out of 5 stars.

Definitely a crucial book for any teenager who cares about his/her future! 5 out of 5 stars.
40 of 42 people found this review helpful.

Wow! I wish I had this wonderful book when I was a teenager.

I remember very vividly when I came across Richard Bolles' 'What Colour is Your Parachute', it was way back in the late 80's/early 90's. At that time, I was embarking on a journey to find out about what I wanted to do with the second half of my life.

Naturally, I was attracted to this new book when I saw it in my local bookstore. I am pleased to note that the author has now teamed up with Carol Christen, a career strategist & Jean Blomquist, a college counseller, to come out with this great guide to help teens zero in on their favourite skills & apply that knowledge to get the most out of school, set goals & pursue their dreams.

More importantly, this book actually brings back some sweet memories of what I have perused - pondered about & worked out - for the first time.

It is filled with interactive exercises, provoking worksheets & interesting profiles of young adults who have found their uniques paths in life, all beautifully structured in a three-part layout:

- Part I: Discovering Your Dream Job;
- Part II: On the Way to Your Future;
- Part III: Landing Your Dream Job & More;

With a track record of some thirty years in the career advising arena, the lead author's 'What Colour is your Parachute' has been recognised as the world's best selling job hunting book. To me, it is very much more than that - it's about you & your future; about exploring who you are, what's important to you & what you like to do.

I fully concur with the authors: Life is meant to be lived to the fullest.

In order to achieve a fulfilling life, all of us must do what we love & love what we do!

To sum up my review, this is definitely a crucial book for every teenager who cares about his/her future.

Attention: Mums & Dads, please go & buy this book for your teenaged kids as soon as possible!!! You will be ambly rewarded in the long term.

Editorial Review:

Draws on the timeless principles of the best-selling career book to provide high school students with a focused manual for choosing a career. Includes exercises and worksheets throughout. Features concrete, easy-to-understand job-hunting tips.

NEW TEACHER TOOL 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I had high hopes when I purchased this book but was sadly disappointed. It really is a good book for either new teachers or those who work in urban settings. I am not new to teaching nor do I teach in an urban area so I was not able to put my reading to good use. I think there is an abundance of great advice for those new to profession so I would recommend this highly to them. If you have taught for several years you probably already implement the recommendations in the book. While some of the book could be applied to any grade level, most of it is geared toward middle or high school. This also was contrary to my personal needs but may be quite useful to others. So, new teachers, urban teachers, and teachers of grades 6-12 will probably find this book rather useful. Others might want to keep looking for something else that targets their needs more directly.

Editorial Review:

From seating plans to Shakespeare, Teaching Outside the Box offers practical strategies that will help both new teachers and seasoned veterans create dynamic classroom environments where students enjoy learning and teachers enjoy teaching. This indispensable book is filled with no-nonsense advice, checklists, and handouts as well as
  • A step-by-step plan to make the first week of school a success
  • Approaches for creating a positive discipline plan
  • Methods for motivating students, especially reluctant readers
  • Strategies for successful classroom management
  • Suggestions for creating and grading student portfolios

Great for all kids, helpful for parents and teachers 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have bought and given several copies of this book. It helps give a language to feelings that might otherwise be hard to describe.

Works great for my 4 yr. old 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I used this book with my barely 4 year old (developmentally normal) who has 'anger management' issues that originate with anxiety. There are pages in the book that we were able to write or draw pictures of how he felt. The scale of 1 (calm and safe) to 5 (out of control) was a concept that he grasped right away. He is getting better and better at recognizing when he's getting worried before he gets to a 5. If he does lose control and melts down, just the verbal cue "what number are you at" or asking him to calm down and try to get back to a 1 or 2, and he immediately starts to use his strategies - deep breathing, squeezing hands, thinking happy thoughts. I love this book.

Worry Book for Kids 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a really cute book for kids who worry. It is not real meaty but the concept is great. It helps them put worry into perspective and gives a scale to help prioritize worries.

twisted, horrifying, disgusting, revolting, perverted, vomit-inducing, etc. 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 18 people found this review helpful.

this is the worst book i've ever read, along with the house on mango street. i had to read this the summer before ninth grade. yes, ninth! i was THIRTEEN and i had to submerge myself in this perverted sick unhealthy (most likely drug-induced) for lack of a better word, BOOK. i was horrified, disgusted, revolted, terrified, and it was NOT a pleasant read. i couldn't even finish it. i stopped after about 100 pages, and akwardly had to tell my mom that i didn't want to finish it. she read it and agrees with me. why this is considered a "CLASSIC" is beyond me. it sounds like alice walker is on crack and wrote down the first twisted, sick, perverted scence she could think of. i would NEVER recommend this book, especially for schools.

Color Purple 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book and I would recommend anyone to read it and watch the movie.

Recommended as a faithful translation 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for a English translation of JTTCOTE that is faithful to Verne's French one, this one (and a couple others) has been recommended to me by members of the North American Jules Verne Society ([...]). Verne has been poorly translated since the novels were first published and he has received unfair reviews based on those poor translations. I think we owe it to this brilliant man to at least read his books the way he intended them!

I bought this book for my 9 year old son and he really liked it.

ending was a dissapointment 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm a dissapointed ten year old rating this book. Up until the end it
Was probably one of the best books I've ever read. It was full of adventure and excitement, but then I got to the end. The book did not live up to it's name. It would be more appropriately called "Journey Almost to the Centre of the Earth. I recommend this book only to people who like major dissapointments.

Oh, how I wish I had this in school! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I wore holes in piles of paper trying to work up to the basic points so magnificently outlined in this book! It's like having an art teacher with you (without the snide remarks) to bring your abilities to the top.

If you are planning on studying fashion, or just doing it for fun, you need this book.

Highly recommended!

GREAT For Beginners and Those Who Have Experience 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm wanting to become a fashion designer and i bought this book and i was amazed. it really teaches you how to draw fashion models (and people in general) in all different poses. it shows you so many different poses both with an actual person modeling the pose and then a block figure showing you how to draw it. after the structure is learned, it teaches you in a really easy way how to flesh it out, and then how to draw the clothes and how the clothes are supposed to look at folds and creases. if you like this book, i recommend Draw Fashion Models! by Lee Hammond, a great book that goes in depth into more poses and how you should draw the clothes and how they look when the arms are raised, when you're leaning on one hip, etc.

i really recommend buying this amazing book, it's straightforward and very helpful!
