The supreme authority! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have used the AP Stylebook for over 5 years. The entries are easy to find and easy to understand. Entries are brief and to the point. Are the seasons capitalized? How about north, south, east and west? Where do you place adverbs - before or after the verb, or someplace else? It's Web site - two words and the first one is capitalized. Internet is capitalized because it's a proper noun.

This book has the definitive answers. I don't work for a newspaper anymore, but, as a freelance writer, I miss this book more and more everyday. I must get my own. You will never be sorry that you bought this book. It will help you no matter what kind of writing you do.

Editorial Review:

More people write for the Associated Press than for any newspaper in the world, and more writers --over 1,750,000--have bought The AP Stylebook than any other journalism reference. It provides facts and references for reporters, and defines usage, spelling, and grammar for editors. There are separate sections for journalists specializing in sports and business, and complete guidelines for how to write photo captions, proofread text, file copy over the wire, handle copyrights, and avoid libel. This new edition of the Stylebook has been fully updated with fifty new entries and revisions to more than one hundred others in order to keep pace with world events, common usage, and Associated Press procedures. More than 1.7 million copies sold

Editorial Review:

Wouldn't you love to abolish the IRS ...
Keep all the money in your paycheck ...
Pay taxes on what you spend, not what you earn ...
And eliminate all the fraud, hassle, and waste of our current system?

Then the FairTax is for you. In the face of the outlandish American tax burden, talk-radio firebrand Neal Boortz and Congressman John Linder are leading the charge to phase out our current, unfair system and enact the FairTax Plan, replacing the federal income tax and withholding system with a simple 23 percent retail sales tax on new goods and services. This dramatic revision of the current system, which would eliminate the reviled IRS, has already caught fire in the American heartland, with more than six hundred thousand taxpayers signing on in support of the plan.

As Boortz and Linder reveal in this first book on the FairTax, this radical but eminently sensible plan would end the annual national nightmare of filing income tax returns, while at the same time enlarging the federal tax base by collecting sales tax from every retail consumer in the country. The FairTax, they argue, would transform the fearsome bureaucracy of the IRS into a more transparent, accountable, and equitable tax collection system. Among other benefits, it will:

  • Make America's tax code truly voluntary, without reducing revenue
  • Replace today's indecipherable tax code with one simple sales tax
  • Protect lower-income Americans by covering the tax on basic necessities
  • Eliminate billions of dollars in embedded taxes we don't even know we're paying
  • Bring offshore corporate dollars back into the U.S. economy

Endorsed by scores of leading economists and supported by a huge and growing grassroots movement, the FairTax Plan could revolutionize the way America pays for itself. In this straight-talking book, Neal Boortz and John Linder show you how it would work—and how you can help make it happen.

Glannon is fantastic. This is a great book to review before exams, and it also is a great value!

Useful & recommended 4 out of 5 stars.

Though I ended up not having much use for this book due to my professor's distinctive teaching methodology, I still found it helpful in clarifying the basic concepts of Torts. The author injects a slightly dorky sense of humor into the narrative, which makes the information more accessible and easier to grasp. He also has a very clear, conversational writing style. Overall recommended (at least if you don't have my Torts professor).

    Editorial Review:

A favorite among law students and professors alike, the Examples & Explanations series is ideal for studying, reviewing and testing your understanding through application of hypothetical examples. Authored by leading professors with extensive classroom experience, Examples & Explanations titles offer hypothetical questions in the subject area, complemented by detailed explanations that allow you to test your knowledge of the topic, and compare your own analysis.

Today's hero is often tomorrow's blockhead. 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There are two things that I really liked about this book, and one thing that I didn't. The good things:

    1) The author's vast knowledge of the financial markets, from most of a century of experience.
    2) His extensive and entertaining history of risk analysis.

    The bad thing:

His attempts to explain math concepts that he apparently doesn't understand very well.

His history of risk analysis was a pleasure to read -- from Fibonacci and Cardano, to Markowitz and Sharpe. My favorite, was his coverage of Francis Galton, the man who measured everything.

Above all, the greatest value in this book is that it's packed with the author's knowledge of finance, from 63 years of experience. He's 89 years old now, and appears to still be going strong.

This book is well worth reading.

My favorite quote from the book:
    Today's hero is often tomorrow's blockhead.(pg 297)

    Editorial Review:

This audiobook, a narrative that moves like a novel, chronicles the remarkable intellectual adventure that liberated humanity from the oracles and soothsayers by means of the powerful tools of risk management that are available to us today. The premise is to show that risk need not be feared today: managing risks has become synonymous with challenge and opportunity.

This study aid has been incredibly helpful. It is great to refer to it after reading a case in your casebook. It has a lot of helpful tips in writing exams as well. I would definitely recommend Emanuel Contracts to anyone taking Contracts!

Great last minute help and helpful throughout the term 5 out of 5 stars.

I just had my first term exams and they went much smoother with the help of the crunchtime series. I will be using them for every class that I have that they are offered. The flow charts was the only section that did not work for me as that is not the thinking pattern that assists me. But some of the other students who I studied with used them and liked them it depends on how you organize, the capsule was what I used. Great product and helpful in the first year of confusion called law school.

    Editorial Review:

CrunchTime provides a comprehensive topic breakdown and critical information review all in one tool! The application flow charts can be used all semester long, but the capsule summaries are ideal for exam preparation. Each title offers capsule summaries of major points of law and critical issues, exam tips for identifying common traps and pitfalls, sample exam and essay questions with model answers, and recommended approaches for crafting essays that will get winning grades!

An insightful look at the hottest new business trend from the authour of "The Machine that Changed the World." In their landmark book "The Machine That Changed the World," James Womack and Daniel Jones, two of the top industrial analysts is the world, explained how companies can dramatically improve their performance through the "lean production" approach pioneered by Toyota. "Lean Thinking" extends these ideas to provide a rallying cry for today's corporate leaders. After a decade of downsizing and reengineering, most companies in North America, Europe, and Japan are still stuck, searching for a formula for sustainable growth and success. The problem, as Womack and Jones explain in "Lean Thinking," is that managers have lost sight of value for the customer and how to create it. What's needed is "lean thinking" -- a groundbreaking new mindset that is revolutionizing the way of the modern business world. Using case studies of "lean" companies around the world who have energetically embraced leanness in pursuit of their own perfect enterprises, Womack and Jones explain this exciting new concept in fascinating detail. Clearly demonstrating the simple ideas behind lean thinking that can breathe new life into any company in any industry. "Lean Thinking" offers a new way of thinking, being, and doing for the serious manager -- one that will change the world.

If you do legal work at home, this dictionary is essential to have there. As a law student, I have unlimited access to the Westlaw version of Black's, but there are a great deal of missing entries in that format. I have literally never tried to look up a word in the hardbound version without finding it--not so with the online or pocket versions. It is also an excellent citation source for basic legal facts, something you can't do with the internet version because of the lack of page numbers. Perhaps a little expensive for a student, but this sturdy, long-lasting volume will pay for itself by saving you time.

    Editorial Review:

This first-ever, total A-Z revision of features flexible cross-referencing that leads you quickly to the definitions you need. Prepared by a noted legal lexicographer and team of prominent legal historians, scholars, lawyers, and judges, who rewrote every entry -- both for substantive accuracy and for stylistic clarity. Includes quotes and cites on terminological issues from authorities such as William Blackstone and Charles Alan Wright with illustrative quotations from hornbooks, treatises, and other scholarly sources. Covers international law as never before. Systematically incorporates new legal terms from “cybersquatting” to “Megan’s law” to “statistical-decision theory.” Parts of speech and etymology of terms are provided where appropriate. Includes dozens of subject and usage labels to quickly orient you to term’s context.

    Editorial Review:

In their professional lives courtroom lawyers must do these two things well: speak persuasively and write persuasively. In this noteworthy book, two of the most noted legal writers of our day Justice Antonin Scalia and Bryan A. Garner systematically present every important idea about judicial persuasion in a fresh, entertaining way. Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges is a guide for novice and experienced litigators alike. It covers the essentials of sound legal reasoning, including how to develop the syllogism that underlies any argument. From there the authors explain the art of brief-writing, especially what to include and what to omit, so that you can induce the judge to focus closely on your arguments. Finally, they show what it takes to succeed in oral argument. The opinions of Justice Scalia are legendary for their sharp insights, biting wit, and memorable phrasing. The writings of Bryan A. Garner, editor in chief of Black s Law Dictionary®, are respected inside and outside legal circles for their practical guidance on the art of writing and advocacy. Together the Scalia-Garner team has produced a fresh, innovative approach to a timeless topic.
