Heavy book, in a bad way! 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Honestly first off if you have not read this series and are thinking of starting it I suggest not wasting your time.

Eragon starts off interesting enough. yes the story is recycled versions of other stories but done in a fresh way. The pacing of the first book of Eragon was great. The second book was a little slower but it kept my attention.

The third installment Brisingr is so slow I would read a few pages and have to sit it down out of sheer boredom. It usually takes me a week to read a novel like this but Brisingr took me over a month to finish, I ended up putting it down twice to read two whole books in between trying to finish this one.

All in all if you enjoyed the first two books get this one to finish the quadrilogy(which if Paolini decides to make it longer then four I will give up on ther series all together)otherwise do not bother picking up this heavy, slow paced novel that is really only about glorifying Eragon and worshiping the ground Paolini's character walks on.

Editorial Review:

OATHS SWORN . . . loyalties tested . . . forces collide.

Following the colossal battle against the Empire’s warriors on the Burning Plains, Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have narrowly escaped with their lives. Still there is more at hand for the Rider and his dragon, as Eragon finds himself bound by a tangle of promises he may not be able to keep.

First is Eragon’s oath to his cousin Roran: to help rescue Roran’s beloved, Katrina, from King Galbatorix’s clutches. But Eragon owes his loyalty to others, too. The Varden are in desperate need of his talents and strength—as are the elves and dwarves. When unrest claims the rebels and danger strikes from every corner, Eragon must make choices— choices that take him across the Empire and beyond, choices that may lead to unimagined sacrifice.

Eragon is the greatest hope to rid the land of tyranny. Can this once-simple farm boy unite the rebel forces and defeat the king?

5th book in the Ranger's Apprentice series 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Will is now a full Ranger, with his own posting. But it isn't long before his friend Alyss arrives with a secret mission for him. It seems that a king of a critical fief has been poisoned. And the king's people believe a sorcerer is to blame. Will and Alyss must investigate the claims and discover who is really behind the king's illness. Things aren't what they seem.

Set years after the last book in the series, Will has finally come to his own. But he still gets some help from his friends in this latest adventure. The mystery and suspense are heightened in this latest installment. With edge-of-your-seat excitement, this is the most thrilling story yet. Though also ends with a cliffhanger, which U.S. readers will have to wait a bit longer to read the conclusion of this particular adventure as it isn't scheduled to publish here until next spring. The author has just finished book 8, so we're a little behind. (According to [...])

Editorial Review:

Time has passed since the apprentice and his master, Will and Halt, led the Araluens to victory against invaders, and Will is now a full-fledged Ranger with his own fief to look after. The fief seems sleepy— boring, even—until the king is poisoned. Joined by his friend Alyss, Will is thrown headfirst into an extraordinary adventure propelled by fears of sorcery, and must determine who is trustworthy to the king and who is trying to take his throne.

Will and Alyss must battle growing hysteria, traitors, and most of all, time. The king is fading, but when Alyss is taken hostage, Will is forced to make a desperate choice between loyalty to his mission and loyalty to his friend.

Adventure abounds in this absorbing installment of the New York Times bestselling series.

I have never read any books by Suzanne Collins. From the first chapter she seemlessly drew me into Katniss's world. I was transported into a future that seemed real on every level. Katniss is a female lead, believable and strong, which I enjoyed very much.

The world in which she and the other individuals reside is full of hardships and the smallest joys. Approached from the aspect of young adults and children I wanted to know how it turned out for each of them and had to resist the urge to skip forward and satisfy my curiosity.

This book is classified as young adult/teen, however, as with books by other authors in this category, I would never have guessed it was not written for adults. I fully enjoyed it and the author. Before I finished Hunger Games I purchased Suzanne Collins's other novels and read them in short order. A fascinating book and a great author.

Editorial Review:

Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat's sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

Terry Pratchett...a small god 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Having read Terry Pratchett's whole catalogue of work after happening on the illustrated "Eric" many years back I never cease to be amazed at his wordsmanship and ability to paint the human condition so gently but piercingly. "Nation" is no exception. It is both gentle, quitely amusing and metaphysically raging and if it is, as some have suggested, based on his own current condition which has thrust his own mortality into his sights, then more accolades to him that he is still one of the most civilized voices on the island. The book is very readable and ponderable...i'm sure the Librarian would give it pride of place in the library should it fall into that world.

Editorial Review:

The sea has taken everything.

Mau is the only one left after a giant wave sweeps his island village away. But when much is taken, something is returned, and somewhere in the jungle Daphne—a girl from the other side of the globe—is the sole survivor of a ship destroyed by the same wave.

Together the two confront the aftermath of catastrophe. Drawn by the smoke of Mau and Daphne's sheltering fire, other refugees slowly arrive: children without parents, mothers without babies, husbands without wives—all of them hungry and all of them frightened. As Mau and Daphne struggle to keep the small band safe and fed, they defy ancestral spirits, challenge death himself, and uncover a long-hidden secret that literally turns the world upside down. . . .

Internationally revered storyteller Terry Pratchett presents a breathtaking adventure of survival and discovery, and of the courage required to forge new beliefs.

Editorial Review:

Humans and half-bloods alike agree--Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a series fit for heroes! Re-live the adventure from the beginning with this boxed set of the first three books.

The Lightning Thief Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. When his mom tells him the truth about where he came from, she takes him to the one place he'll be safe--Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island). There, Percy learns that the father he never knew is actually Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon Percy finds himself caught up in a mystery that could lead to disastrous consequences. Together with his friends--a satyr and other the demigod daughter of Athena--Percy sets out on a quest to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

The Sea of Monsters After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly calm. But things don't stay quiet for long. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters--the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia--only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new nameL: the Bermuda Triangle. Now Percy and his friends must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family--one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke...

The Titan's Curse When Percy Jackson receives a distress call from his friend Grover, he immediately prepares for battle. He knows he'll need his powerful demigod allies, Annabeth and Thalia, at his side; his trusty broze sword Riptide; and... a ride from his mom. The demigods race to the rescue, to find that Grover has made an important discovery: two new powerful half-bloods whose parentage is unknown. But that's not all that awaits them. The Titan lord, Kronos, has set up his most devious trap yet, and the young heroes have unwittingly fallen prey. Hilarious and action-packed, this third adventure in the series finds Percy faced with his most dangerous challenge so far: the chilling prophecy of the Titan's curse.

I loved it! I was a bit confused at the end, Opal fakes Spelltropy so Artemis will steal from her? It was still an excellent instalment. Holly's line, "In another time.." Was probally my favorite quote in the book.

Editorial Review:

Artemis's mother has contracted a deadly disease--and the only cure lies in the brain fluid of African lemurs. Unfortunately, Artemis himself was responsible for making the lemurs extinct five years ago. Now he must enlist the aid of his fairy friends to travel back in time and save them. Not only that, but he must face his deadliest foe yet...his younger self.

Fantastic Sequel 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The Magician does not disappoint as a continuation from the first book, The Alchemyst. Scott really does a remarkable job of blending history and mythology and magic all into one amazing adventure.

In this installment Sophie and Josh run into more trouble and adventure while both of their powers' grow stronger, while Nicolas and Pernelle grow weaker by the hour. I'm so looking foward to the third installment of this series!

Editorial Review:

After fleeing Ojai, Nicholas, Sophie, Josh, and Scatty emerge in Paris, the City of Lights. Home for Nicholas Flamel. Only this homecoming is anything but sweet. Perenell is still locked up back in Alcatraz and Paris is teeming with enemies. Nicollo Machiavelli, immortal author and celebrated art collector, is working for Dee. He’s after them, and time is running out for Nicholas and Perenell. For every day spent without the Book of Abraham the Mage, they age one year—their magic becoming weaker and their bodies more frail. For Flamel, the Prophesy is becoming more and more clear.

It’s time for Sophie to learn the second elemental magic: Fire Magic. And there’s only one man who can teach it to her: Flamel’s old student, the Comte de Saint-Germain—alchemist, magician, and rock star. Josh and Sophie Newman are the world’s only hope—if they don’t turn on each other first.

I ordered the 3 volume boxed set on a whim. Not being familiar with the author or the story.Although I'm somewhat older than the intended audience
I am very impressed with Paolini's writting style and abilities.
The three volumes are fast moving, touching, and exciting.I have just added
Paolini to my list of authors that I will help make rich by having to buy
their latest works in hard cover because I will not be able to wait for the paper back edition to be released.

Love it - Good Read 5 out of 5 stars.

It's a wonderful trilogy of great and small battles with enemies both in- and outside ones self. A story filled with hope, fear, magic, perseverance, talent, strength and weakness.
These are books which condemn you to so spend every free moment on the coach or in bed untill you've read them all.

WITH THE HIGHLY anticipated publication of Book Three in the Inheritance cycle, the hardcover editions of all three books will be available in a handsome boxed set!

Wonderfully Creative 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

12 year old Percy Jackson has always known he is different - he's been kicked out of several boarding schools, he's dyslexic, and he's never known who his father was. But he is about to find out just how different he is - characters from Greek mythology have entered his life and his best friend Grover is not who Percy thinks he is. Before he knows it, Percy is accused of stealing Zeus's master lightning bolt and has just ten days to find and return it. Percy and his friends Grover and Annabeth embark on a journey to find the lightening bolt that will change all of their lives.

"The Lightning Thief" is a wonderfully creative children's book by Rick Riordan. There are, perhaps inevitably, some similarities to the Harry Potter series - Percy has two close friends, a boy and a girl; he calls himself a half-blood; Annabeth has a baseball hat that makes her invisible when she wears it; only Percy can be the hero of the quest; and the trio even encounters a bunch of spiders. But Riordan is a talented enough writer to make readers forget the Potter comparisons and enjoy the series on its own merits. The concept of Percy battling Greek Gods and Goddesses is a unique one and Riordan does an excellent job of incorporating Greek mythology into the story. Children will no doubt want to know more about mythical characters such as Poseidon, Zeus, Chiron, Charon, Medusa, and more after reading the book. Percy's journey is indeed an epic one and readers will love reading about his dangerous journey across the country. The book is written in the first person from Percy's point of view and Riordan does an excellent job of capturing Percy's voice. The great thing about Percy's character is that while in many ways he is extraordinary because of who his father is and the adventures he has, he is also an ordinary 12 year old boy who struggles in school because of his dyslexia, who is a loyal friend but also gets into fights, and who loves his mother even if he doesn't always obey her. Children of all ages will identify with Percy on some level.

"The Lightning Thief" is the first in the five book "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series, a series that looks like it will be a lot of fun.

Editorial Review:

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse—Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena—Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.
