This book really captures the heart, the mind, and the troubles of Malcolm X and society in the 1960's. The beautiful illustrations are wonderful at expressing complex emotions and complement the words of Walter Dean Myers extemely well. This book is fabulous as children seek to understand the complexities of those turbulent times.

Editorial Review:

"We never can win freedom and justice and equality until we are doing something for ourselves!"

Malcolm X learned from his father that black people should demand equality by taking their lives and futures into their own hands. Malcolm believed in this idea. It was one he lived by.

Though Malcolm faced hard times growing up and even went to jail, he turned his life around. He read books and combined lessons he'd learned from his father and from the religious leader Elijah Muhammad. Soon Malcolm would become a powerful leader in the struggle for blacks to achieve equality.

Malcolm died tragically when he was only thirty-nine, but his beliefs live on today. Walter Dean Myers's evenhanded narrative and Leonard Jenkins's striking paintings celebrate the man and the fiery message he brought to all people of color.

Editorial Review:

Life is a Jungle by Ron Snell is Book 2 of The Rani Adventures, also known as The Jungle Series. The second edition is 5 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches. The first edition was 4 1/4 inches by 7 inches. Type is bigger and easier to read in the second edition. You are currently viewing the larger, second edition. Extremely popular with the Christian homeschool audience as well as people of all ages, The Rani Adventures depict what life was like for a young missionary kid growing up in the rainforests of Peru. My high school years were like a television series, Snell writes. Hiking into the middle of the Amazon jungle to build an airstrip and nearly starving to death. Greeting the president of Peru as he stepped out of his chopper to visit our school. Spoon-feeding water to feverish Machiguengas and helping bury the ones who died. I never thought it unusual to have a 16-foot anaconda slithering around in our science class. Or going barefoot to school, getting stuck in the middle of landslides or getting cheap thrills careening through the streets of Lima in taxis in the dead of night. What was I doing in Peru? Well, that's a long story. A funny, sad, sometimes unbelievable story. It's what this book is about--a really crazy family that loved adventure, loved God, and loved the Machiguengas.

Excellent biography, Wonderful photographs and illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.

This is my favorite biography of Beatrix Potter, thoroughly researched and historically accurate, with many wonderful family, home and countrylife photographs (including ones of Beatrix Potter's pet rabbit, dog, and a variety of her other animal pets). The book also contains her many beautiful illustrations, watercolors and copies of some notes and letters as well as portions of her manuscripts. Judy Taylor, an author enchanted with Beatrix Potter stories and art from early childhood, also wrote Beatrix Potter: The Artist and Her World, and two National Trust Guides: Beatrix Potter and Hilltop, and Beatrix Potter and Hawkshead. She's the editor of both Beatrix Potter's Letters: A Selection and Letters To Children from Beatrix Potter.

Editorial Review:

Born in 1866, Beatrix Potter was an early model for modern feminism, rejecting the contemporary restrictions of her class and gender. Through her strength and determination, Potter found independence and stature in nontraditional roles. This illustrated biography vividly captures Potter's life, from her Victorian childhood to her final years farming in the Lake District.

bull catcher is a story about a boy named neil (bull) larson and his freind jeff who live to play baseball and nothing but baseball, and try to get into the majors. along the way they meet up with new people like ngo phuong, who is an awesome pitcher with almost no control on his arm, and beth, the sister of a boy who neil had accidently broke his nose in A game. When they reach high school, bull and phuong is selected into the varsity team but jeff was not, but things changed and there was an empty slot on the varsity team and then jeff got onto the varsity team. later on the team made it to the finals, but because of the bull, the lost the game and because he couldnt live with himself, instead of playing in the summer league, he became a counsler at a summer camp. over there he meets up with bev again who's another counseler, and finds out that there was a trajedy while he was gone.

Editorial Review:

Neil "Bull" Larsen loves baseball more than anything. But when he submits his four-year baseball diary as his senior project, he is prompted to take a closer look at his life - and learns some important lessons about himself.

Extremely popular with the Christian homeschool audience as well as people of all ages, The Rani Adventures depict what life was like for a young missionary kid growing up in the rainforests of Peru. Snell writes:It was 7:30 at night. Standing in inky black jungle, we were hundreds of miles from the nearest lightbulb. The call of insects and frogs shrilled in our ears. Somewhere nearby, we knew, were Indians who killed anyone who ventured into their territory. What we didn't know was whether they were coming to kill us. Even so, after almost a year in the concrete jungles of Chicago at the Moody Bible Institute, there was no place else I'd rather be. I was 17. This third book in the Rani Adventure Series is filled with more true stories of high-pitched tension and hilarious adventure. The Matses Indian contact. The attempt to raft through the Boqueron. The night an idiot Chihuahua became a hero. And through it all, a thought-provoking look at the jungle, at the Machiguenga Indians, at the process of translating Scripture into another language.

Sad to See It End 5 out of 5 stars.

After devouring Beverly Cleary's first memoir "A Girl From Yamhill" I couldn't wait to read My Own Two Feet. The only thing to complain about is that there isn't a sequel to this one! Picking up where Yamhill left off, we share in Beverly Cleary's journey through college and into her adult years and the writing of her first book, Henry Huggins. Reading Cleary's Memoirs, I was taken back to my own childhood and my love for Ramona & Beezus. Cleary has a unique gift of simple writing that readers of all ages can enjoy, whether you are 8 or 80. I lover her writing as much today as I did when I was in the 3rd grade.

Editorial Review:

The New Yorker called Beverly Cleary's first volume of memoirs, A Girl From Yamhill, a warm, honest book, as interesting as any novel. Now the creator of the classic children's stories millions grew up with continues her own fascination story. Here is Beverly Cleary, from college years to the publication of her first book. It is a fascinating look at her life and a writing career that spans three generations, continuing to capture the hearts and imaginations of children of all ages throughout the world.

Editorial Review:

On April 20, 1999, Rachel Scott was eating lunch with a friend in front of her high school when she was approached by two fellow students with guns, shot four times, and killed. Her story is of a girl who refused to be average and instead, lived a life of purpose and compassion. In an essay assigned in school Rachel wrote, “Compassion is the greatest form of love that humans have to offer…I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” While she lived, Rachel strove to find the beauty in everyone and went out of her way to treat each person with respect. Her legacy challenges others to do the same.

Beware of offensive language and subject matter 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a glimpse into Paulsen's 16th summer, when he left his drunken parents to pursue life on his own. He takes work as a laborer in the beet fields where he befriends Mexican workers and learns to hunt pigeons with his bare hands, and later does farm work, joins the crew of a traveling carnival, and learns about lust from an older, much more experienced woman.
This book should be limited to mature readers because of the detailed sexual encounter and the language typical of the people Paulsen associated with during that summer. By "mature readers", I mean ones that will not circle offensive language or mark up the book in any other way because of it.

Editorial Review:

For a 16-year-old boy out in the world alone for the first time, every day's an education in the hard work and boredom of migrant labor; every day teaches him something more about friendship, or hunger, or profanity, or lust--always lust. He learns how a poker game, or hitching a ride, can turn deadly.
He discovers the secret sadness and generosity to be found on a lonely farm in the middle of nowhere. Then he joins up with a carnival and becomes a grunt, running a ride and shilling for the geek show. He's living the hard carny life and beginning to see the world through carny eyes. He's tough. Cynical. By the end of the summer he's pretty sure he knows it all. Until he meets Ruby.

Not just for kids 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I was surprised to see that a reviewer called this a book that could teach kids how to write. Of course it can, but it can teach *anyone* of any age how to be a better writer. Sid Fleischman's sweet, gentle humor shines through on every page. His advice to aspiring magicians, authors, parents, human beings in general is so sound and so commonsensical that at first it seems simplistic. It isn't. Nothing he advises is obvious; it's just that he expresses it so well and it makes so much sense that his words slip into your work and make it, and you, better.

Editorial Review:

The man with the spats rolled up his sleeves and proceeded to pluck a polished red billiard ball out of thin air. Presto! It vanished. Abracadabra! It reappeared. It turned white. it blushed red again. VoiIá! Suddenly there were four billiard balls between this amazing man's fingers.

I was stunned. All of this was happening right under my nose. And there was more. He flipped the deck into falling waterfalls of cards, spun them into fans, and thrust a sword through a shower of cards to impale the seven of diamonds -- selected a moment before.

I was dazzled. The moment he finished his act and ushered us gawkers back onto the sidewalk, I knew what I wanted to be. Someone else could be president of the United States.

I wanted to be a magician.
