Editorial Review:

Melinda Sordino busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops. Now her old friends won't talk to her, and people she doesn't even know hate her from a distance. The safest place to be is alone, inside her own head. But even that's not safe. Because there's something she's trying not to think about, something about the night of the party that, if she let it in, would blow her carefully constructed disguise to smithereens. And then she would have to speak the truth. This extraordinary first novel has captured the imaginations of teenagers and adults across the country.

A must read for any spiritual seeker 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A journey through the life of a man with a single purpose: to find his own truth.

Knowing that the only way to discover life's greatest mysteries is to go through the heart of them alone, he finds himself living one extreme after another until he finally rests in the balance.

The ending will either leave you glowing or pondering, but either way you will not regret taking the time to read this remarkable tale.

A rambling spiritual adventure... 4 out of 5 stars.

On a whim I picked this one up, knowing of it and recognizing the book title. I knew nothing of what the book was about, except what I could surmise from the cover.

I was a little put off initially with the way Hesse wrote, kind of flighty with nothing too concrete or definite. Is it a spiritual quest, a personal quest and so on. Then as Siddhartha grows older within the book we begin to see the natural progression from one mental/spiritual situation to the next. We see him go from spiritual, to rich, gambling, to being poor to a heightened spiritual state and so on.

All in all, after I worked my way into the flesh of Hesse's writing, I began to enjoy Siddhartha. You feel as though you are on the spiritual voyage with him and can understand where he is coming from. I am glad that there were only 150 pages and it was a fast read, because I most certainly would not want to read this style of writing for very long. I would recommend.

4 stars.

Editorial Review:

With parallels to the enlightenment of the Buddha, Hesse's Siddhartha is the story of a young Brahmin's quest for the ultimate reality. Steeped in the tenets of both psychoanalysis and Eastern mysticism, Siddhartha presents an original view of man and culture, and the arduous process of self-discovery that leads to reconciliation, harmony, and peace.

Editorial Review:

The covenant that was meant to keep the wizard wars at bay has been stolen, and Trinity must prepare for attack. Everyone is doing their part -- Seph is monitoring the Weirwalls; Jack and Ellen are training their ghostly army; even Anaweir Will and Fitch are setting booby traps around the town's perimeter. But to Jason Haley, it seems like everyone wants to keep him out of the action. He may not be the most powerful wizard in Trinity, but he's prepared to fight for his friends. When Jason finds a powerful talisman --a huge opal called the Dragonheart--buried in a cave, his role takes on new importance. The stone seems to sing to Jason's very soul -- showing him that he is meant for more than anyone guessed. Trinity's guardians take the stone away after they realize that it may be a weapon powerful enough to save them all. Without any significant power of his own, and now without the stone, what can Jason possibly do to help the people he cares about -- and to prove his mettle?

Madison Moss can feel the beating heart of the opal, too. The desire for it surges through her, drawing her to it. But Maddie has other things besides the Dragonheart on her mind. She has a secret. Ever since absorbing the magical blow that was meant to kill Seph, she's been leaking dark powers. Although Maddie herself is immune to magic, what would her friends think if they knew what kind of evil lay within her? Trinity's enemies are as enthusiastic about her powers as she is frightened. They think they can use her to get to the Dragonheart -- and they'll use anyone Maddie cares about to make her steal the stone for them.

Moral compasses spin out of control as a final battle storms through what was once a sanctuary for the gifted. With so much to lose, what will Jason and Maddie be willing to fight for -- and what will they sacrifice? Every man is for himself in this thrilling conclusion to the Heir trilogy.

Editorial Review:

It's refreshing when you find a Batman story that both is epic and successfully explores the core of a resolutely explored character. Taking as its catalyst a sub-plot from the seminal Batman: Year One, the story revolves around murders occurring on national holidays, the victims connected to Mob boss "The Roman." Dubbed "Holiday," the killer uses an untraceable handgun and leaves small trinkets at the scene. Plenty of suspects are available, but the truth is something the Dark Knight never suspected. This series scores two major coups: it brilliantly portrays the transfer of Gotham rule to the supervillains and charts the horrific transformation of Harvey Dent from hardened D.A. to the psychotic Two-Face. Both orbit around the sharply portrayed relationship between Dent, Commissioner Gordon, and Batman: a triumvirate of radically different perceptions of Justice. It is always great to see the formative incarnation of Batman, drenched in noir here.Jeph Loeb's writing is keenly aware that Batman is a detective, and Tim Sale portrays a Gotham that is a fertile breeding ground for corruption and madness. Here, Batman is coming to terms with the potent image he projects and the madness it attracts. There are many fine Batman stories, but the ones that capture the spirit with extreme clarity are few. On this alone, The Long Halloween comes highly recommended. Masterfully executed, this is an excellent chance to revisit the world of Batman as fresh as in the summer of 1939. --Danny Graydon

Took me back to a simpler time 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was purchased for a nine year old grand daughter; once we read it, the decision was made to give it to all the grand children, aged 9, 6, & 4. It is our fervent desire that to this family, this book will, indeed, attain the status of 'heirloom'.
Although the years have created a somewhat fuzzy memory, this edition reminded me a great deal of the first time I'd ever read this story. it's my opinion that anyone who loves books will not be disapointed with this purchase. I am able to recommend it with no hesitation.

Editorial Review:

This deluxe volume of the Christmas classic is nothing short of dazzling--an heirloom-quality treasure to take out each holiday season and read aloud with family and friends. This elegantly designed version is printed on heavy art stock, with cloth binding, tipped-on illustration, and foil stamping in copper and gold. Vibrant full-color images and debossed duotone spot art by award-winning British illustrator Christian Birmingham bring Moore's beloved poem, Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas, to life as never before.

we get it already... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

There seem to be a lot of reviews written for this book bashing it. We get it...you're angry that this is a work of fiction and isn't, in all actuality, a true, bona fide account. Unfortunately for you, you will find that most books contain fiction.

Yes the book says that teenagers shouldn't do drugs or get pregnant. I see nothing wrong with this message (although I will admit that the author could have gone about it in a different way). Yes, the book seems to fit all drug addict stereotypes, and yes it insinuates that LSD and marijuana can be addicting. NEWSFLASH! They are called stereotypes because a large amount of people FIT INTO THEM...and although drugs such as LSD and marijuana aren't physically addicting, they are mentally addicting.

Overall, this book is a good read and sends a sensible (if somewhat cookie-cutter, brainwashy) message.

P.S. Just because books aren't "literary classics" doesn't mean that they aren't good books. Maybe some people should be glad that people are reading anything at all, or even writing anything at all, rather than gripe about WHAT is being read or written...

Editorial Review:

January 24th

After you've had it, there isn't even life without drugs....

It started when she was served a soft drink laced with LSD in a dangerous party game. Within months, she was hooked, trapped in a downward spiral that took her from her comfortable home and loving family to the mean streets of an unforgiving city. It was a journey that would rob her of her innocence, her youth -- and ultimately her life.

Read her diary.

Enter her world.

You will never forget her.

For thirty-five years, the acclaimed, bestselling first-person account of a teenage girl's harrowing decent into the nightmarish world of drugs has left an indelible mark on generations of teen readers. As powerful -- and as timely -- today as ever, Go Ask Alice remains the definitive book on the horrors of addiction.

Legions of readers entranced by the New York Times bestseller Twilight won't be disappointed by this gripping sequel. Lively, imaginative tale for kids & adults alike 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This magical, adventure-filled tale is the first book in one of the best kids' fantasy series I've come across in quite a while. And it's not just for kids; grown-ups will enjoy this too.

The story begins when Kendra and Seth, a sister and brother ages 13 and 11, are taken to stay with their grandparents, Stan and Ruth Sorenson, at their estate in Connecticut while their mother and father go on a two-week Scandinavian cruise. It turns out that their grandparents are the caretakers of a hidden sanctuary for magical and mythical creatures (fairies, naiads, brownies, trolls, satyrs, golems, etc.) to save them from extinction by encroaching human civilization.

Seth and Kendra find themselves confronted with all sorts of mysteries after they arrive at the preserve. Where is their grandmother? Who is this housekeeper/cook who likes to do her gardening out in the rain? Why is there a caged hen named Goldilocks in their attic bedroom? Why is there such an abundance of oddly behaving hummingbirds, butterflies and bumblebees in the yard? Why are the kids forbidden to go into the woods or the barn? Who is the old witch who lives in an ivy-covered shack and occupies herself by chewing on knots in a rope? The answers to all these questions will unfold as we read this enchanting tale.

This is an unusually well-told story, with characters, both human and mythical, who seem real; a fast pace with lots of action and adventure; and lively dialogue, with plenty of humor, especially between Seth and Kendra.

I liked this book so much that I reread it only a few weeks after my first read, just after I finished the first sequel. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good, fun, entertaining fantasy in which good wins out over evil.

Editorial Review:

For centuries mystical creatures of all description were gathered into a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite.

Kendra and her brother, Seth, have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws keep relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken -- Seth is a bit too curious and reckless for his own good -- powerful forces of evil are unleashed, and Kendra and her brother face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save their family, Fablehaven, and perhaps even the world, Kendra and Seth must find the courage to do what they fear most.

Death of a Steam Shovel 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Michael Mulligan and his faithful steam shovel, lovingly called Mary Anne, are working class heroes, fighting to retain their independence in the face of corporate technological prowess in the construction industry. Can outmoded steam power compete with the awesome strength of diesel? Conveniently, this book features paper (not plastic) pages, so your tot can decimate the images of the vile diesel shovels with all the rage that his or her small hands can muster. Don't' be upset about this, it's nothing a roll of clear packing tape can't fix.

Much like the story of Casey Jones, vindication of our heroes will require their demise. Tasked with one final job, the digging of the basement for a fancy town hall, Mike and Mary Anne find themselves trapped by the tremendous success of their labor. Unable to get out of the hole, Mary Anne is broken down to be made into a boiler for the new building, and Mike becomes the janitor. This is no happy ending. No longer are Mike and Mary Anne independent contractors, free to come and go as they please. Mary Anne's steam-powered feet have been bound, like a disobedient concubine. And Mike has become a low-ranking servant of the state, forever forced to feed coal into the mutilated form that was one his industrial lover. The life lesson here is that it doesn't matter if you are honest and hard-working. In fact, those are disadvantages. The only winners are the diesel shovels, destroying without remorse.

Good for tykes who like to play with blocks and toy trucks. Might as well let them know what they're in for.

Editorial Review:

A modern classic that no child should miss. Since it was first published in 1939, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel has delighted generations of children. Mike and his trusty steam shovel, Mary Anne, dig deep canals for boats to travel through, cut mountain passes for trains, and hollow out cellars for city skyscrapers -- the very symbol of industrial America. But with progress come new machines, and soon the inseparable duo are out of work. Mike believes that Mary Anne can dig as much in a day as one hundred men can dig in a week, and the two have one last chance to prove it and save Mary Anne from the scrap heap. What happens next in the small town of Popperville is a testament to their friendship, and to old-fashioned hard work and ingenuity.
