With Very Realistic Characters 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

At the turn of the century, life was much harder than it is today, partially because of the amount of untamed wilderness in this country. We often attribute a difficult life with sorrow and desperation, but this story portrays life in the north as a rewarding and happy one. It is based on the real-life experiences of Kathy Flannigan, a woman who met the authors and shared her story.

Mrs. Mike begins when Kathy is travelling to meet her uncle who lives in the north in a city. She suffers from pleursey and the doctor has recommended she leave the booming city of Boston to a colder climate. There, she meets a mountee from the wilderness of the north, and promptly falls in love. He warns her of their impending life together, but she embraces it with timid but open arms and she matures quickly in the vast expanse.

The depiction of the relationship between Kathy and Mike is beautiful to say the least. Both people seem so real and their love for each other is vivid and true. Other characters are highly memorable. Oh-Be-Joyful and Jonathan, Sarah, Constance, Baldy Red, Captain, Timmy, etc. all play their parts in this lively story. It reads like a series of events without the typical introduction, rising action, climax, and falling action, but this makes it seem more real. The language is easy to understand and there is plenty of dialogue.

This book was made into a movie starring Dick Powell and Evelyn Keyes. It is a good adaptation, but due to time restraints, it cuts out many characters and events and alters a few as well. I recommend seeing the movie first and then reading the book to avoid disappointment.

Editorial Review:

Mrs. Mike is the love story of Katherine Mary O'Fallon, a young Irish girl from Boston, and Sergeant Mike Flannigan of the Canadian Mounted Police, who is a priest, doctor and magistrate to all in the great Canadian wilderness area under his supervision. Recommended by Library Journal.

Immortal Beloved 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

For those only interested in this book because of the SATC movie the letter varies slightly. I'm not sure that many people know that it is a great mystery whom the "immortal beloved" is referring to by Beethoven. There are many theories about who "immortal beloved" is and there is even a movie about it...but no one knows. I love that. I love to read that letter and I feel like I am given a brief glimpse into someone's secret heart and I wonder how she felt about him.

Beautiful 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has all of the love letters from the SATC movie that I was looking for. It's a beautiful edition.

Beautiful and Inspiring 5 out of 5 stars.

I adore this book, and the theme behind it. As a romantic at heart and as one of those girls that would love to believe in true love, this book confirms to me that it is actually possible to find your soul mate. Now I'm not saying this book is for the people that want to read about happily ever after's, because in reality most of these love letters are dated and back when Beethoven was in love with the imfamous "Immortal Beloved" people didn't always get to have a happily ever after. The letter's are more based on the Romeo and Juliet scenario. You find your true love but you are destined to forever be apart. However, those facts do not take away from the remarkable truth that these letter's were written by real people for real people, and while reading them you can find yourself trasported to that place and time, and feel just as loved and adored.

Editorial Review:

This wonderful collection of timeless love letters includes the words of Ludwig Van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Winston Churchill, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Napoleon Bonaparte, John Keats, King Henry VIII, Voltaire, Vincent Van Gogh, Charlotte Bronte, Lord Byron, Lewis Carrol, Leo Tolstoy, Pierre Curie, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and many more.

classic 3 out of 5 stars.

It was a good book, but older writing styles are hard for me to get used to. I liked the characters, but the movie ruined it for me. ALWAYS read the book before you see the movie.

Comedy of Errors on a Georgian Stage 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A smug but goodhearted society girl learns her judgment isn't as incisive as she thinks it is. "Emma" is a fun, lighthearted version of Jane Austen, with enough misunderstandings and crossed signals to form the basis of a modern sitcom. For all its pleasant enjoyability, however, the novel is also a fascinating character study of one woman being elevated to a nobler level by being taken down several notches.

In this respect, "Emma" is a prime example of the fact that although many see Jane Austen as something of a proto-feminist, she often gave her male characters the most admirable constitutions of her entire cast. Although the female Emma may be the heroine we hope will triumph, the male Mr. Knightley (like Colonel Brandon of "Sense and Sensibility") is the unimpeachably noble person, and the one who helps Emma ascend to a higher plane of virtue when she might otherwise have been left in despair at her failures. In the end, Austen's fourth novel (and the last published during her lifetime) is not a feminist manifesto. Rather, it transcends the gender wars and remains a touching comedy of errors with a profoundly subtle commentary on human pride and folly.

Editorial Review:

As daughter of the richest, most important man in the small provincial village of Highbury, Emma Woodhouse is firmly convinced that it is her right--perhaps even her "duty"--to arrange the lives of others. Considered by most critics to be Austen's most technically brilliant achievement, "Emma" sparkles with ironic insights into self-deception, self-discovery, and the interplay of love and power.

Snow White by Don Williams 4 out of 5 stars.

-Good book. Very original. I loved all 7 dwarfs. An emotional children book. Recommend for first readers, especially young girls.

Snow White done right.. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Since this is a book taken from Disney's film version, I can see where much change was made. The illustrations are beautiful, more colorful, brighter than the original film. Everything seems to be in order: from the Evil Queen sending the huntsman to kill Snow White (he was unsuccessful) to the Queen transforming into the old witch, handing the apple to Snow White and the dwarves taking care of her until the Prince comes and kisses her awake. Lovely little tale. We read it on a nightly basis at our home. My two year old fancies himself a dwarf..Happy.

A Tradition Continued 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this to our son, sadly, after he "out grew" these books, they were passed on. Happily, after searching all over I found these treasures on Amazon and now have a new collection for our beautiful grand daughter to enjoy.

Editorial Review:

Now even the youngest Disney Princess fans can enjoy the classic story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs! This sturdy board book features stunning full-color art as well as simple, easy-to-read text.

My favorite book during high school. BEST COMING-OF-AGE BOOK! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was my favorite book during high school, and I still to this day recommend it to everyone I meet. There are not enough words to describe just how great this book really is, and even so, words cannot do this book justice. Definitely the best coming-of-age book I've ever read, and when I have my own family in the future, it will be the first book I recommend to my daughter. (Yes, it is that good!)

I can see why we call this a "classic" 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Anyone who is a frequent reader of this blog knows of my aversion to classics. I don't typically enjoy them, I always have to force myself to finish them, and I usually just end up giving up before I finish altogether. This book started out similar - it took me a really long time to get invested in the story and characters, I read it very slowly, and I was pretty sure I was going to hate it by page 50. Fortunately for me, though, I ended up enjoying the story when I (sadly) forced myself to continue on. (Thanks, Classics Challenge, for that little push!) I am SO proud of myself for getting through this and actually feeling like I somewhat enjoyed the book. Someone described this book to me as almost like a soap opera (can't remember who...), and that individual is completely right. There is so much drama in here... it's crazy. I definitely felt attached to the characters, even with all their unpredictable drama, and I'm glad that I finished the book and got to appreciate it. I can't really say that this is one of my favorites, but it is a pretty decent book, and I can see why it is dubbed a "classic".

Editorial Review:

The story of Cathy Earnshaw and the wild Heathcliff as they fall in love on the Yorkshire moors spans three generations and is seen through the eyes of the narrators Lockwood and Nelly Dean. Emily Bronte tells of the passion between Cathy and Heathcliff with such vivid intensity that her tale of tragic love has gripped readers for over 100 years.

i liked it 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

it's something different and unique. i was pretty satisfied with it and would give it 4 and a half stars. i liked the way the author wrote from the point of view of both jordan and courtney and kept switching from past to present; i thought it would be confusing but the author made sure that didn't happen. the suspense is also good and i can tell because when the secret is revealed to the reader, i literally gasped and stared gapelessly at the page for like thirty seconds. the love story is sweet and cute. the only thing i didn't like about the book was the writing style itself. it sounded like a distressed cheerleader talking the whole time; maybe because it sounded so much like a teenager talking i didn't like it, because i prefer more sophisticated writing. overall, a quick read, i finished it in several hours.

Editorial Review:

there are two sides toevery breakup.

This is Jordan and Courtney, totally in love. Sure, they were an unlikely high school couple. But they clicked; it worked. They're even going to the same college, and driving cross-country together for orientation.

Then Jordan dumps Courtney -- for a girl he met on the Internet.

It's too late to change plans, so the road trip is on. Courtney's heartbroken, but figures she can tough it out for a few days. La la la -- this is Courtney pretending not to care.

But in a strange twist, Jordan cares. A lot.

Turns out, he's got a secret or two that he's not telling Courtney. And it has everything to do with why they broke up, why they can't get back together, and how, in spite of it all, this couple is destined for each other.

IB English HL Book Review 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you enjoyed Allende's The House of the Spirits, then this is the right book for you! Much like Allende's novel, Like Water for Chocolate combines the ordinary and the supernatural in the portrayal of two young, Latino lovers living in the midst of civil war. However, Esquivel's work remains unique though her use of food in not only emphasizing her pride in the Mexican culture, but also in expressing the strong conflicting emotions that are deep within the hearts of the characters. Through the use of magical realism and the motif of food, Esquivel depicts a love story that explores the classic theme of what happens to a dream deterred.
Every chapter of the novel begins with a recipe, which serves to accentuate how the life of a traditional Mexican family is centered on the kitchen. Thus it is no surprise that the main character is no other than the youngest daughter and head chef, Tita, who is characterized as a talented young girl whose spirit is constantly broken by her mother's incessant upbraiding. Tita's lifelong pain is symbolized through the motif of onions, which appear throughout the novel during times of deep sorrow and heavy weeping. Esquivel's use of food as a motif is further evidenced by Tita's culinary masterpieces--such as the rose dish that causes its consumers to be afflicted with erotic obsession. Overall, Esquivel's originality is derived from her ability to mix the elements of cooking, erotica, and the magical realism in creating a novel that demonstrates the consequences of emotional repression. I personally recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for a love story chock-full of Hispanic culture, garnished with elements of the supernatural.

Editorial Review:

Earthy, magical, and utterly charming, this tale of family life in turn-of-the-century Mexico became a best-selling phenomenon with its winning blend of poignant romance and bittersweet wit. The classic love story takes place on the De la Garza ranch, as the tyrannical owner, Mama Elena, chops onions at the kitchen table in her final days of pregnancy. While still in her mother's womb, her daughter to be weeps so violently she causes an early labor, and little Tita slips out amid the spices and fixings for noodle soup. This early encounter with food soon becomes a way of life, and Tita grows up to be a master chef. She shares special points of her favorite preparations with listeners throughout the story.

1 less star because of The Dark Reunion 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I really really liked the Fury but really didn't get into the Dark Reunion. I think The Dark Reunion left more open doors then if it would have ended at The Fury. Was there more to Meredith...didn't it seem like something was always going to be revealed about her but wasn't? And Damon's character was elvolving since book 1 and in the last he just flatlined. Then the tension between Bonnie & Damon and the human guy(lol can't remember his name)...it got started then never developed. The human story in the beginning of the Dark Reunion was soooo drawn out I couldn't wait till the vampire came into play. Eh, just not a satisifying end all around.

Editorial Review:

Elena: transformed, the golden girl has become what she once feared and desired.

Stefan: tormented by losing Elena, he's determined to end his feud with Damon once and for all—whatever the cost. But slowly he begins to realize that his brother is not his only enemy.

Damon: at last, he possesses Elena. But will his thirst for revenge against Stefan poison his triumph? Or can they come together to face one final battle?

Collected here in one edition are the third and fourth volumes of The Vampire Diaries, a riveting conclusion to the tale of two vampire brothers and the beautiful girl torn between them.
