My son (15 1/2) requested this and when he got it he read it straight through in a couple of days. I am not familiar with the story, but am always glad to see him "devour" a book.

Editorial Review:

When Bobby Pendragon first arrives on the tropical world of Ibara, he finds paradise. It's not long before Bobby discovers, however, that they are also blissfully...oblivious.

Worse, he seems to be under Saint Dane's influence. It's up to Courtney to find Mark and stop him from making a grave mistake that could change the future of all existence.

Editorial Review:

Gemma Doyle is looking forward to a holiday from Spence Academy—spending time with her friends in the city, attending balls in fancy gowns with plunging necklines, and dallying with the handsome Lord Denby. Yet amid these distractions, her visions intensify—visions of three girls dressed in white, to whom something horrific has happened that only the realms can explain.

The lure is strong, and soon Gemma, Felicity, and Ann are turning flowers into butterflies in the enchanted world that Gemma takes them to. To the girls' great joy, their beloved Pippa is there as well, eager to complete their circle of friendship.

But all is not well in the realms—or out. Kartik is back, desperately insisting to Gemma that she must bind the magic, lest colossal disaster befall her. Gemma is willing to comply, for this would bring her face-to-face with her late mother's greatest friend, now Gemma's foe—Circe. Until Circe is destroyed, Gemma cannot live out her destiny. But finding Circe proves a most perilous task. . . .

This sumptuous companion to A Great and Terrible Beauty teems with Victorian thrills and chills that play out against the rich backdrop of 1895 London, a place of shadows and light . . . where inside great beauty can lie a rebel angel.

I purchased this book for my daughter (a 33 year old 1st grade teacher) for her birthday. It was her favorite book as a child. She read it to her classroom and the kids loved it. No one in her class had heard of this book before. Even the school librarian had not heard of it. It is a great book and of course the illustrations were wonderful. I think the best part of the book is the true meaning of the book that no matter how bad you think you have it or how bad things are, there's always someone worse off than you are. It teaches positive thinking for all ages. My grandsons loved the book too so I know it will end up as worn out as the original book I purchased 30 years ago.

Editorial Review:

In this tale of mishap and misadventure, Dr Seuss reminds us that there is always someone, somewhere, worse off than ourselves. The book has been branded a "Yellow Back Book", which indicates that it is suitable for fluent readers aged five and over, or for reading aloud to younger children.

Reveiw-good book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A magic spring can cause a lot of trouble. When 10-year-old Winnie Foster finds out that the Tucks have everlasting life they have to take her home and convince her that living forever might not be as good as it sounds. When trouble arises, it's Winnie's choice to save the Tuck's, and the spring, from people who care only about themselves. Who would have guessed that a 10-year-old girl would have the choice to change the world...forever?

Compelling; But I'm Missing Something 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This well-known (and surpisingly lacking of contemporary awards) young adult book is about a little girl and a fountain of eternal life (as we know life, that is). Key players here also include a family of ageless centurions under the fountain's power, a mysterious stranger who would exploit that power, and a cast of hapless citizens in the background who don't realize that they live among the most potent force in their little reality.
I read this aloud to my kids. They were pulled into the story and quite curious about where this would all lead, but I had the distinct sense that there was an attempted charm in this book that the author never fully achieved. The Tucks (the ageless family) are presented as all-powerful-innocents; immortals who (almost all of them) deeply regret their immortality, and whose regret is soothed by an unexplained love for the little girl who they (almost all of them) want desperately to protect from their own endless fate. I got the intent, but the presentation of this situation didn't "move" me like I hoped it would.
All in all, it's a good book but it wouldn't make my top 100 list, although the reviews of my peers are overwhelmingly more worshipful. I did enjoy pondering and discussing the many questions that the book raises, and of course the matters of life and death drip from every page; indeed, by the end of the book, every living thing that we're introduced to is either dead (by one means or another) or plodding through its own eternal changelessness. As a father, it was interesting to see my kids split in their own reactions to the question: would you rather age, change, and die as all things are meant to do, or would you rather live on forever, unchanged and unchangeable? Well?

Editorial Review:

The Tuck family is confronted with an agonizing situation when they discover that a ten-year-old girl and a malicious stranger now share their secret about a spring whose water prevents one from ever growing older.

WHY WOULD YOU ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO READ THIS?? 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 20 people found this review helpful.

My daughter got this for her birthday. I hated this book!! The story is fine. Maybe kids might get something deep from this but I doubt it. From the first page, the characters are all dark and ugly to each other. There is no respect shown for any authority figure in the book from parents to teachers. There is no love or respect between any siblings. There are plenty of cuss words throughout the book. There are illusions to a child/teacher inappropriate relationship. There is a whole discussion about God d---- people to h---. The words in this book can't be typed in this review, so why would you allow your child to read them?? The death of the child holds no meaning, because I didn't feel anything for any of the characters and there's no great lesson in the death either. There are lots of references to killing people "by the childen"! Such things like "I'd like to kill him/her" said repeatedly, like it's ok to say that. The parents are portrayed as insignificant and stupid. There are illusions that the boy may turn out gay because he draws. There are lots of mean remarks about fat people. I have no idea how this book got an award and why it has 800 star reviews. I only know I am sick that my daughter got this book as a gift and read it before I checked it out. There is nothing edifying in this book whatsoever and I'm probably on damage control for the next 6 months with my child.

A secret world of their own

Jess Aaron's greatest ambition is to be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. He's been practicing all summer and can't wait to see his classmates' faces when he beats them all. But on the first day of school, a new kid, a new girl, boldly crosses over to the boy's side of the playground and outruns everyone.

That's not a very promising beginning for a friendship, but Jess and Leslie Burke become inseparable. It doesn't matter to Jess that leslie dresses funny, or that her family has a lot of money -- but no TV. Leslie has imagination. Together, she and Jess create Terabithia, a magical kingdom in the woods where the two of them reign as king and queen, and their imaginations set the only limits. Then one morning a terrible tragedy occurs. Only when Jess is able to come to grips with this tragedy does he finally understand the strength and courage Leslie has given him.

Editorial Review:

It all began with a strange, mysterious correspondence left for authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black at a small New England bookstore. Written by three siblings, the letter told of their great-great-uncle Arthur Spiderwick and an unfinished tome filled with eyewitness accounts of creatures otherwise thought to be the stuff of legend. In the #1 New York Times bestselling serial the Spiderwick Chronicles, readers were enthralled by the account of the those siblings, Jared, Simon, and Mallory Grace, as they battled dwarves, goblins, elves, and a diabolical ogre in their efforts to hold on to their uncle Spiderwick,s life work. Now, through the combined efforts of the Grace children and authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, Simon & Schuster is thrilled to present that work to you!

Beginning with a thoughtful and informative introduction, progressing through six exhaustive sections featuring thirty-one faerie species, and culminating with an addendum that includes observations supplied by Jared Grace, this long-awaited compendium to the worldwide Spiderwick phenomenon delivers enough information to satisfy even the most demanding faerie enthusiast. Not only will readers learn the habits and habitats of the fourteen fantastical creatures featured in the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestselling chapter books, but they will be delighted and astonished by an additional seventeen creatures. Also included are dozens of snippets from Arthur Spiderwick,s personal journal as well as cameos from a few series favorites.

With so much to offer, this book is destined to be pored over for generations to come!

Dekker's Big, Sloppy Kiss of Chaos 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The big 4th book of Dekker's "Lost Books" had promise written all over it. I still think it should've been top notch. And with the sprawl and tenacity of "Renegade," I simply thought the best was yet to come. Ted Dekker is blessed that he is nothing less than an accomplished writer. Because I was rolling my eyes through the first hundred pages, and then it thankfully got better. That's a good thing!

So, you have Johnis and Silvie, hanging out in a stolen Chevy...in Las Vegas! But make no mistake about it, books are top priority! Don't get in the way.

Love is in the air, and deception is beyond the reach of nobody! And just when you thought the nasty stench of Alucard was gone, take another sniff. You never thought it could get this crazy, and going out for blood never tasted so good!

Remembering Elyon, remembering a purpose. Dekker refuses to reveal any tricks up his sleeve, but lets us know that we should be keeping our eyes peeled. And please, beware dear reader. Sometimes the end is simply the beginning! Especially with Ted Dekker. Don't forget that.

Get ready for a big kiss, but expect it to get bloody! So expect nothing less than a kiss of chaos.

An insiteful book about relationships 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book about a boy's quest and struggle to identify his unique abilities and strengths to become a positive force in a world with a too-often narrow view of what it takes to be a hero. This book could open discussions between parent and teenager on relationships, respect, homophobia, the trial and error inherent in finding the hero within. The characters have realistic qualities and the author tells his story with humor and realism. Well deserved winner of the LAMDA Award for literature.

Surprisingly good 5 out of 5 stars.

I wasn't expecting much when I bought this but it was great. For a comic nerd its wonderfully cheesy.

Highly Recommended 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

First let me say, it takes a lot for a book to really grab and hold my attention. I borrowed this book from a friend of mine, and I didn't expect too much at first, until i actually opened the book, and WOW. I must say that had never expected such a story before. Myself, I've always wanted to write something kinda sci-fi with homosexual characters going out to save the world, now that I've read one I feel even more encouraged as a writer.

I feel that many gay teens would be able to relate to this book though. It's based in modern day and time, just it also includes super heroes. But the feel isn't like a comic book, it's very real. It doesn't beat you over the head with "i'm fighting for justice and the right way" or any crap like that, it makes you really feel for the character and his emotions, that even in a group of outcasts, you can still feel like an outcast among them. I returned this book to my friend, and I WILL be buying my own copy eventually, I must read it again.

"Journey ..." holds up quite well! 4 out of 5 stars.

Over the decades, I have read "Journey ..." a few times. Despite the years since it was written, it holds up quite well as a fantasy / Adventure! It is an enjoyable book and I think today's teenagers would like it.

Editorial Review:

The Whangdoodle was once the wisest, the kindest, and the most extraordinary creature in the world. Then he disappeared and created a wonderful land for himself and all the other remarkable animals -- the ten-legged Sidewinders, the little furry Flukes, the friendly Whiffle Bird, and the treacherous, "oily" Prock. It was an almost perfect place where the last of the really great Whangdoodles could rule his kingdom with "peace, love and a sense of fun" -- apart from and forgotten by people.

But not completely forgotten. Professor Savant believed in the Whangdoodle. And when he told the three Potter children of his search for the spectacular creature, Lindy, Tom, and Ben were eager to reach Whangdoodleland.

With the Professor's help, they discovered the secret way. But waiting for them was the scheming Prock, who would use almost any means to keep them away from his beloved king. Only by skill and determination were the four travelers able to discover the last of the really great Whangdoodles and grant him his heart's desire.

Julie Andrews Edwards, star of stage and screen, has written a unique and beloved story that has become a modern classic. The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles is sure to continue to delight readers everywhere. This edition includes a new foreword by the author.
