A GREAT re-launch for this series! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a great re-launch for the Tom Swift series! An action-packed story, told in the first person (like the new Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series) make this an entertaining read for all ages. The cover art/packaging is also very cool, appealing to new readers to this series and collectors of old. I can't wait for more, and hopefully a new Dana Girls series is not far behind!

Good for kids... 5 out of 5 stars.

The writing is for kids, but the new series is a nice update. My 9yo son love the new over the old. I still like the writing in the older series.
Would recommend. Not expensive, OK soft cover.

TOM IS IN DEEP-SEA TROUBLE...

Tom. Bud, and Yo are on the S.S. Nestor, a Swift Enterprises research vessel, to witness Mr. Swift testing his submersible, the Verne-1. Mr. Swift plans to use the Verne-1 to place a network of seismometers on the sea floor to detect underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other phenomena that might generate tidal waves on the ocean's surface. But when an unexpected storm hits and the S.S. Nestor looses contact with the Verne-1, it's up to Tom to save his father.

Tom Swift + re-invention = GREAT! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book in the newly re-invented Tom Swift series. In fact, this would have made a better book #1 and introduction to this new series (some early cover art shows this as #1 in the Young Inventor series.) Tom and his family, friends, and environment are nicely introduced in this story. We have descriptions of the characters and the town of Shopton (which boasts a "Statemeyer Street" and is said to by quite bustling). Another great nod to the original Tom Sift and Tom Swift Jr series is the lobby of Swift enterprises, which holds a museum to Tom's father's early inventions (including the Giant Robot., G-force inverter, triphibian atomicar, etc from the Tom Swift Jr series of the 50's and 60's.) Mr. Swift is married to Mary Nestor, and Tom's little sister is Sandy. I feel these are nice touches to long-time fans of the series. Tom's friends are funky and fun, and they make a well rounded trio for todays readers. Overall, a great book, with books #1 and #2 a perfect introduction to the new Tom Swift, Young Inventor series!

Editorial Review:

ROBOTS + TERRORISTS = TROUBLE FOR TOM

Tom's been training his entry, SwiftBot, for the upcoming Robot Olympics -- a major event being sponsored by the White House's Office of Science and Technology. Teenage inventors from around the country will be bringing their homemade robots to compete in a series of athletic competitions. The Road Back, an antiscience terrorist group, has issued a statement condemning the event, and Tom hopes that the tight security at the Robot Olympics will keep TRB from causing trouble. But no such luck. Someone is playing dirty . . . and things are going to get dangerous.

Back on top! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Tom Swift, Young Inventor is back on top with book #5-On Top of the World. Science and adventure are blended with a fast-paced mystery/thriller. I liked the facts about Mount Everest woven into the story, I feel like you would finish this book and know a little bit more about this area of the world. Great for kids of all ages. One bad thing about the book- the characters use "Dude" way too many times. The editors could spend little time making these characters sound real and not what they think "cool" kids sound like!

Editorial Review:

HIGH ELEVATIONS EQUAL HIGH STAKES FOR TOM!

Tom is headed to Mount Everest. Not only will he get some sweet practice time in on his new foil kite snowboard, but he and Bud are going to put his latest invention -- a robot Sherpa -- to the test. At Everst's high elevations they will really be able to run the Sherpa through its paces.

But Tom can't quite focus on the tasks at hand because while there are always rumors of the mysterious Yeti, Tom thinks he's seen one. And what's more is that there's a nasty bunch of hunters on the prowl to capture the yeti "at any cost." Tom knows that some things are better left a mystery and vows to do what he can to protect this natural environment -- and any mysterious species inhabiting it.

Good read aloud for my 9 year old son. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was familiar with the original series my own father read, so I got the first of these new titles when they started coming out. My then 8 and now 9 year old son enjoys listening to them as a read aloud. He reads well and might find the reading level a little easy compared to what he reads himself, but its fun. It strikes me to be a tad on the conservative side: the bad guys are often an anti-tech "environmentalist" group, and the role of Tom's sister is only given some credit in this most recent novel.

Editorial Review:

Tom and his dad are in the park testing out Tom's new invisibility suit when suddenly a van pulls up -- and kidnaps Mr. Swift!

Tom is panicked -- who would want to abduct his father? A strategy meeting is held and the FBI is called. But things get tricky when it looks like the kidnapping was an inside operation. Despite the FBI's insistence that Tom stay out of the investigation, Tom and his sister, Sandy, are determined to find their father -- and whoever is responsible for taking him, whether it's TRB, their rivals at FUG, or even the FBI itself!

One thing is certain -- Tom will test the limits of science to save his family.

Repeat if necessary 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Only four short stories packaged as "novels" into this new juvenile series, and it's already feeding off itself. Here's a retread of the second "novel", ROBOT OLYMPICS, except this time the fellers are building small jets souped up with rocket boosters, instead of building fighting robots. As usual Andy Foger is the bad guy, but the REAL bad guys are, well, you know, that anti-technology terrorist group which seems to have replaced Brungaria or whatever it was. There are no surprises. I found it difficult to picture an audience (or even a target age group) for this series. And Tom-as-narrator is very hard to get used to. And Bud Barclay could really be annoying if he set his mind to it. Wonder what the sales have been so far?

Editorial Review:

Can Tom avoid a rocket wreckage disaster?

Tom is teaming up with his pals Yo and Bud to test out his new Swift-Racer, a rocket-powered plane built for speed. There's a competition coming up and Tom thinks the Swift-Racer is advanced enough to set a new record in the world of rocket racing. He and Yo can't wait to see how it stacks up to the competition. Plus the contest will reunite Tom with some of the friends he made when he competed in the Robot Olympics.

But as practice for the contest gets under way, disaster strikes. Some of the most powerful planes start crashing during their test runs. To Tom, it looks like more than just faulty technology. Could someone be sabotaging the competition? Tom's going to need more than rocket fuel to figure this one out -- and he'd better act fast, before someone goes down in flames.

The third book in the Tom Swift Young Inventor continues the strong writing style and plots from the first two titles. Science fact and science fiction are nicely blended, with strong narrative to keep the reader interested to the end. I liked the fact that Tom's sister, Sandy, is a major character in this book. Though the "mystery" was easily solved early on (at least to me!) the atmospere and action was still entertaining. I am looking forward to the next one!

What Tom's about to find is truly out of this world!

It's the grand opening of APOGEE, the world's first space hotel, an orbital space station designed expressly for the tourist trade. As Swift Enterprises is a major investor in the project, and provided much of the necessary technology, Tom and Sandy have been invited to be among the first guests to visit!

When they arrive at the APOGEE they experience weightlessness, learn about the high-tech nature of the hotel (including the robotic wait and cleaning staff), and play a game of zero-gravity badminton. But as Tom explores the ship he begins to notice some strange happenings. And when a billionaire guest of the hotel turns up missing,Tom suspects foul play....

Amazing cool inventions ... 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

In this book Tom Swift Jr. is working on a jetmarine when some weird attacts on boats occur. Tom uses his new jetmarine to capture the culprits of the attacks. The jetmarine is an atomic powered craft that can go deeper under water than most submarines. The jetmarine uses Tasmonite, a plastic stronger than metal, instead of glass for its windows.
