Poorly written, a shame. 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I didn't finish this book. Not because I wasn't interested in the subject, but because the writing left me frustrated. I found the author's repetition of the phrase "or whatever..." to be very distracting. The book seemed to have been published after only one draft, and I didn't care about any person in it. Another "quirk" seemed to be a kind of laziness in the writing (though, as we get to know the author's tastes and heroes, it is understandable). Some examples of this are his constant use of the word "some" after such statements as 'it had begun to rain, or he had stopped crying or vomiting'. The same goes for "things". The word seemed to end every list of objects in the book. To me, these are small problems that could have been fixed by an editor. Perhaps, all involved were trying to portray the author as a scrappy Gen-Xer with no time on his hands to tune up his work, instead of keeping the reader at a distance by creating muddy prose. Fine, but after a hundred pages of this sort of thing, it wears thin. Mr. Sheff lost me, and therefore, I learned nothing from his tale.

Editorial Review:

Nic Sheff was drunk for the first time at age eleven. In the years that followed, he would regularly smoke pot, do cocaine and Ecstasy, and develop addictions to crystal meth and heroin. Even so, he felt like he would always be able to quit and put his life together whenever he needed to. It took a violent relapse one summer in California to convince him otherwise. In a voice that is raw and honest, Nic spares no detail in telling us the compelling, heartbreaking, and true story of his relapse and the road to recovery. As we watch Nic plunge the mental and physical depths of drug addiction, he paints a picture for us of a person at odds with his past, with his family, with his substances, and with himself. It's a harrowing portrait -- but not one without hope.

Great guideline for increasing communication 4 out of 5 stars.
35 of 39 people found this review helpful.

This title is a valuable tool in dealing with addiction issues within a family. It assists a family member or other mentor in opening the lines of communication about virtually any tough topic. The children's book gives the child an item to take ownership in. Meanwhile, obtaining the leaders guide that accompanies the children's book will assist adults in understanding the developmental stages and reactions that the child is experiencing. This is a valuable tool for families!

A Very Helpful Book 5 out of 5 stars.

As a child, I unfortunately encountered problems with addiction in my family. I was given this book by a ffriend of my mother's. Together, my mom and I would read it, and it ultimately helped me cope with understanding "daddy's problem." I believe this is an excellent choice for children who are seeing the effects of addiction in their families. It is also a very informative books for those fortunate children who do not have to deal with addiction. It was definitely a huge help for me!

Editorial Review:

An illustrated story to help children understand and cope with the problem of alcoholism or other drug addiction in the family.

Editorial Review:

The basic premise of this book is that chemical dependency is a disease — the alcoholic/addict is a sick person not a bad person. This disease affects not only the addicted person but those who love that person as well. This is a book that will help the "others" affected by chemical dependency to become well.

My Dad Loves Me My Dad Has A Disease was originally written as a result of Claudia Black’s work with young people who had a parent in treatment for their alcoholism. These children were learning at a very young age that it was not safe for them to openly talk about their family experiences. Art therapy was a wonderful medium for them to find the words and a voice in which to talk honestly. It was also a wonderful tool in which to not only share feelings but to problem solve, lessen denial, and to put words to that which was so confusing.

The original pictures were all drawn and the stories written by children age five through fourteen that had one or two alcoholic parents. After many years and thousands of children using this workbook, it has been revised to address the fact that today, if a child lives with addiction, it may not be alcohol addiction. The family member may be addicted to other drugs as well. Words have been rewritten, some pictures changed and new pictures added making it possible for more children of addiction to experience their own recovery process.

Many years ago when Claudia Black was a counselor in an alcohol and drug treatment program, she asked a six-year-old daughter of a man in treatment for his addiction if she knew why her father was in this program. The girl paused and with confidence said, My Dad Loves Me, but My Dad Has a Disease. In spite of her father’s addiction she knew her father loved her. That is a message Claudia would like all young people to be able to believe. Unfortunately when people are addicted they often lose the ability to act in loving ways toward those they love.Growing up in an addicted family usually means living by the rule: it is not all right to talk about the drinking or using in your family. Having been raised in an alcoholic family herself, by the age of six Claudia shared the feelings of loneliness, fear and frustration of her family.

Working through the loneliness, fear and frustration by expressing feelings is what this book is all about. This workbook gives children the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings and to better understand addiction.

Although this workbook was designed for and the illustrations created by young children, it may also hold insights for the now adult age person raised in an addictive home.

we get it already... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

There seem to be a lot of reviews written for this book bashing it. We get it...you're angry that this is a work of fiction and isn't, in all actuality, a true, bona fide account. Unfortunately for you, you will find that most books contain fiction.

Yes the book says that teenagers shouldn't do drugs or get pregnant. I see nothing wrong with this message (although I will admit that the author could have gone about it in a different way). Yes, the book seems to fit all drug addict stereotypes, and yes it insinuates that LSD and marijuana can be addicting. NEWSFLASH! They are called stereotypes because a large amount of people FIT INTO THEM...and although drugs such as LSD and marijuana aren't physically addicting, they are mentally addicting.

Overall, this book is a good read and sends a sensible (if somewhat cookie-cutter, brainwashy) message.

P.S. Just because books aren't "literary classics" doesn't mean that they aren't good books. Maybe some people should be glad that people are reading anything at all, or even writing anything at all, rather than gripe about WHAT is being read or written...

Editorial Review:

The torture and hell of adolescence has rarely been captured as clearly as it is in this classic diary by an anonymous, addicted teen. Lonely, awkward, and under extreme pressure from her "perfect" parents, "Anonymous" swings madly between optimism and despair. When one of her new friends spikes her drink with LSD, this diarist begins a frightening journey into darkness. The drugs take the edge off her loneliness and self-hate, but they also turn her life into a nightmare of exalting highs and excruciating lows. Although there is still some question as to whether this diary is real or fictional, there is no question that it has made a profound impact on millions of readers during the more than 25 years it has been in print. Despite a few dated references to hippies and some expired slang, Go Ask Alice still offers a jolting chronicle of a teenager's life spinning out of control.

I have yet to see if I can get a COMPLETE copy of this book, but I don't want to return it, because it seems to be a great book.

It must be a publisher error that these pages are missing, since they clearly don't appear to be torn out, and the book is in perfect condition in every other way.

Shoddy Copy 1 out of 5 stars.

This book doesn't do justice to the program of recovery prescribed the big book of Alchoholics Anonymous.
The editing's terrible and one of the saving grace's of the big book of Alchoholics Anonymous is that the first 164 pages have remained the same. Guess what? THEY'RE NOT THE SAME HERE! The page formatting is terrible. It's great to be told by your sponsor to go to page 21 and read of the real alcoholic. You can't do this with this book. Do yourself a favour and get the real one.

This is NOT the official Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This does the alcoholic who still suffers a grave disservice. The stories omitted from this un-official and dangerous edition (text is missing) are the culmination of much work from the members of Alcoholics Anonymous to benefit alcoholics. To arrogantly revise and omit the official works that are tried and true and have helped millions recover, without the sanction of the unity of AA toys with peoples' lives that are at stake.

Do NOT buy this book, but DO get the official AA Big book from your local AA chapter or Alcoholics Anonymous World Services.

A very helpful little book 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I found this little book very helpful. The daily entries are written by the teens themselves. The direct, to the point style they bring to issues around living with Alcoholism make this book very readable. Many topics on emotions and issues common to growing up, not just alcoholism are also covered. Adults will also find it helpful. I like that the book is small enough to fit in my purse, so I can carry it anywhere. I would encourage anyone who is bothered by another's drinking to get a copy of this book.
