Hello.... I bought these two books, Hymn and Gospel, for my wife who is taking piano. She is doing well at piano and has found that these books have given her more incentive to play. She has had them for about three weeks and she is still playing them. He teacher is actually going to use them to instruct my wife as she is not interested in theory as much as playing. I'm hoping she will be able to play at our Seventh-day Adventist church very soon. Hebrews 11:1

This is a nice book for worship leaders of all levels. Perhaps there are things you already knew, but they serve as good reminders. I like the way the writers wrote it, it is easy to understand and fun to read. In this thin book there are different sections for different musicians (Worship Leader, guitarists, keyboardist, etc), it's a must-have in my collection of books about worship!

The most incompetently engraved music I have ever seen 1 out of 5 stars.

You may or may not care for "Godspell" -- for what it's worth, I'm rehearsing it right now. But before spending fifty dollars on this book, you should know that, despite the fact that it's been in print for 30 years, it is full of flat-out typos, misspelled accidentals, mislabeled parts, unexplained divisi, and other musical grekh. The publisher should be ashamed. If you plan to use this book for a performance, be prepared to spend many hours correcting it before rehearsal. (It is also often musically different -- even in the melodies -- from the Original Cast Album, but I don't know who was responsible for that.)

As an example of how slovenly the engraving is, consider the word "Stained!" in "We Beseech Thee". In the first place, it doesn't read "Stained!", it reads "Strained!". But, more than that, it's on two notes, so what the score is actually telling you to sing is "Strainèd!".

I just wanted to say that I had to read this book and write three, two page essays on it. My only problem was, there was nothing to write about. He says the same thing different ways. I really don't see what people are getting out of this book. If you're a human being with emotion and you understand music's emotional neediness, then you don't need this book. I don't usually write negatively about things, but this book just upset me because there are people actually buying into everything and paying for a book that common sense would tell them already. If you have half a brain, you don't need this book.

As an inexperienced conductor, I am extremely lucky to have read this book early in my development as a conductor. It really does speak of the core of real music-making - the heart. And it teaches you how to excel in this area of humane musicianship and pitfalls that all musicians do always fall into.

A great book! and I would like to recommend it to any serious mucisian and especially the conductors.

I'm glad I took time to check the publisher's Web site, because I discovered that of the 100 titles included in this book, there are over 50 I've never heard of. To save you that step, I've done a copy/paste of the complete song list I found there, so you can see for yourself how many "old friends" and how many "strangers" you'd be getting if you were to order this book.

This is a very interesting edition of the 15 Alfred Burt Christmas carols. It includes not only the original music and lyrics, but also images of the original greeting cards which were sent out between 1942-54. Burt died too soon at the age of 33, and included in this book are writings by his wife Anne which tell about the carols and her life with Alfred. Many people already know "Some Children See Him," "Caroling, Caroling," and "The Star Carol," but "All On A Christmas Morning" and "Come, Dear Children" are just as great. Burt was the son of an Episcopal rector, but he was also influenced by jazz, so you find both hymnody and modern harmonies in his work. "The Star Carol" is not only his masterpiece, it is also one of the greatest carols ever written.

I had been looking for the Alfred Burt carols since singing them with a community choir group years ago. The book had information about when and how the carols were written, and the hymn-type format is accessible for many pianists and amateur singers. I like the Michigan connection!

This version of TFWS is good for instrumentalists and singers - the music has melody/lyrics, chord symbols, and keyboard parts, similar to the more expensive Accompianment Edition. The songs, like in the UMC hymnal, are organized by topic - they seem a good selection of 80's-90's praise music, with some older hymns and such thrown in.

Our church has the pew editions in the pews (of course). Here at home, I have 1 copy of the accompaniment edition, and just now 1 copy of the singers edition. For a lot of the songs, a person could just use the singers edition for the person playing accompaniment. Both the top and bottom hands are in most of the songs in the singers book. There are some selections that have only the top hand in the singers edition. If a person wasn't to picky, the singers edition would work for the accompanist, but if you want to make sure you have everything, make sure to get the accompainment edition if you are the accompainist.

The Singers edition is great!!! It is spirial bound and easy to flip through for singers. Like I said, most of the songs have both top and both hands for each song. The dimension size of the singers edition is bigger than the pew books, but smaller than the accompaniment edition.

Overall, is you are wanting to get books for your choir, don't just use pew books, get your choir the singers books, it will be well worth the money so that not just the soprano have their part, but the alto, tenor and base have their parts too!!!

Excellent hymnal for morons and people without taste. 1 out of 5 stars.

This book has about five good hymns in it. Any self-respecting church music director or Lutheran priest should instruct congregation to take these unpleasant volumes out of the pews, stack them in the street outside the church, dowse them with kerosene and light them ablaze. Would lead to some excellent Lutheran fellowship. Make sure to speak to the fire marshall before hand. The title of this committlee-made book is supposed to make the congregation comfortable in all singing melody. Of course this was always an option under the regime of the green and red hymnals anyway. Most of the new liturgy of this book is ugly and it seems padded with spirituals. Spirituals are fine for church camp and perhaps once a year in regular mass, but If I wanted to be baptist I would switch denominations. This hymnal contains a few excellent old hymns, which should be torn out, stapled together and inserted in the back of the real hymnal, before the W.O.V. book burning. This tasteless hymnal is a metiphor for the general assumption of leadership in the Lutheran Church by cowardly numbskulls.
