I saw a review of this book on a morning show and could not wait to get it. The review implied that Simon shared the stories behind the lyrics of each of his songs. When I received the book and saw that outside of a short introduction, the entire book was just the printing of the lyrics themselves with no interpretation or commentary, I was truly disappointed. I returned the book.

Here's a vote for Paul Simon being appointed Poet Laureate. It would be perfect: Under Barack Obama's tenure as president the Library of Congress chooses someone equally unusual and gifted to be the eloquent voice of this nation.

Lyrics 1964-2008 is just that: The lyrics to Simon's songs. The number of words here is staggering. You forget just how prolific he has been. More impressive is how many of these songs hit close to home. How many you know by heart.

There are a few bonuses. The album covers are reproduced (in black and white). A sprinkling of photographs include some with Art Garfunkel and some recent performance shots. Best of all, there are copies of the original hand-written lyrics to some of Simon's best songs: "Mother and Child Reunion," "Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard," "Kodachrome," "American Tune," "Loves Me Like a Rock," "Still Crazy After All These Years," "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," "Slip Sliding Away," "Boy in the Bubble," "Graceland," "You Can Call Me Al," "Look at That." You can see Simon having trouble with the end of "American Tune" (he has erased some words, and finally puts a question mark next to the lyric). In the notes for "Graceland," you can see the mournful lines, unused: "For no logical reason, no explanation, something deep inside of me is going to Graceland."

There is something redemptive about Simon's work. This book says it all.

A couple of sour notes, but overall...good. 4 out of 5 stars.

Having purchased this for my kids to use and practice in time for Christmas 2005, I pretested all the music and found it to be a nice starter set of Christmas music for the piano student in their first or second year of training. The arrangements tend to be minimalistic. Caveat: there are at least two obviously wrong notes in The First Nowell and Jingle Bells, so you'd be well advised to correct them once you find them; hopefully they'll fix them by the time a second edition rolls out. Nice features: Each song can be played without turning pages. A charming black-and-white illustration accompanies each song. There's also a list of the songs in order of difficulty for those who want to learn the songs that way.

Mr. Schulz, you invented nothing. This wheel was originally published at least 60 years ago, and probably invented well before that. In music, we all stand on the shoulders of our forebears.

Wow... more songs than I ever imagined! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has everything.... every song ever written by The Beatles. I am so excited to get started learning some of my favorite songs on my guitar. Though I'm not necessarily a Beatles Fan, though I have always appreciated their music, I had to have this book after seeing the movie "Across the Universe". It was like I heard the words for the first time and realized also for the first time that The Beatles were way ahead of their time in music and vision. I highly recommend this book.

Here it is in one complete book all of The Beatles songs with the correct chords. This is a nice book with easy to read type and probably every song you ever wanted to know by The Beatles. The only minus is there isn't ant tab for the lead parts, but that's easy enough to get anywhere. Recommend for anyone that wants to learn chord structures by The Beatles.

Wicked is fabulous on every level. Just know that this score is not easy to play from if you are not a good piano player. Also as voice teacher, prepare yourself for a lot of students who will not be able to even touch the high belt required for some of these songs!

As some reviewers wrote, some transcriptions are not same as the recording. Regardless, this book is very enjoyable. Who doesn't enjoy playing George Winston's beautiful music? I think any player can enjoy this book because it is not very hard technically. I would have been even much happier if this book had included more blues, like "Miles City Train".

This is a MUST have for any jazz musician. Now, let me just warn you that if you don't play piano you might not enjoy the book as much considering a lot of the things written in the book by Levine are really being directed towards piano. There are also many jazz piano standard sample pieces that you will find through out the book. That being said though, Levine makes his points more than clear and explains the theory in a way that you will totally understand. If you read carefully and pay attention to what he wrote, you will without question become a better jazz musician. I hope this review has helped you, please feel free to leave comments!

I have only begun to focus on theory very recently, I'm 19 years old. This book is very simple to read and doesn't require a massive amount of knowledge of music theory. You have to be able to read music (not tabs), but if you're interested in Jazz you should already know how to. I like it a lot. I have been using the Real Book 5th edition and played some songs off it, but I never realized a lot of very technical things about the songs I have been practicing, and it helped me make more sense out of some those tunes the FIRST day I got it. I hope to keep studying this book and jazz for as long as I can, and I can already tell it's going to take A LOT of time but if you love jazz then it shouldn't be bad at all...

First, I would like to say there are many good books and DVDs out there; however, the problem that I found were in the particulars that were being taught when it comes to soloing. Chord progressions can be learned in just about any blues book you pick up but soloing is what most of us want to learn. Blues solos are tricky as they tell a story; they breath; they make you feel. All the books I have do not help you with this; they give you scales and a couple licks but somehow you are supposed to ear train yourself into learning HOW and WHEN to use these licks. What leaves the sour taste in your mouth is that so many teach you very hokey, uninteresting kind of licks; Licks and riffs you would never use when playing with friends or would want to listen to in your own liesure time. IF YOU WANT TO SOLO LIKE A BLUES HERO (B.B. KING, BUDDY GUY, CLAPTON, SRV, ETC) THAN BUY THIS BOOK. This book teaches where to fit amazing licks/riffs over the progression. This is not just a book of scales or just a book of riffs but HOW and WHEN to use them. HOW and WHEN is the key when learning how to solo the blues. With all the riffs in this book, the possibilites are endless. This book is AMAZING!!! Exactly what I needed (and if you are reading the reviews, maybe this is what you are looking for and what you need too)!!!
